Traffic impacts are underway. The project will widen Route 33 in the area of Home Depot/Tinseltown Access Road, Wegman Road and Pixley Road in order to provide space for an ad- ditional eastbound through lane, plus right-turn lanes to improve traffic flow and safety. Sidewalks will be added along the south side of Route 33 from Trabold Road to Marway Circle. Space for bicyclists will be provided along the corridor and existing bicyclist and pedestrian amenities will be upgraded. The project will also include resurfacing the existing pavement, upgrading the drainage system and traffic signals, and installing landscaping, signs, and pavement markings, according to the NYSDOT. Beginning last week, motorists could expect daily lane closures along Buffalo Road between the I-490 interchange east towards the Gates Chili High School. Motorists should allow extra travel time to safely pass through the highway work zone. Highway crews will generally work weekdays from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. Two-way travel will be maintained at all times along the Buffalo Road corridor. Short term closures at expressway entrance and exit ramps will occur this summer during milling and paving operations. Elec- tronic message boards will inform motorists before these closures occur. Access to all parking lots will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. Utility relocation work took place during the 2014 season, along with the addition of new sidewalks to the west of the I-490 interchange. The construction contractor for the project is CATCO, of Alden, Erie County. Work is expected to be complete by August 2015. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license. Buffalo Road safety project in Gates resumes

Construction work is resuming on a $3.6 million safety project to ease congestion and improve safety along Route 33 (Buffalo Road) between Trabold Road and Marway Circle in the town of Gates, Monroe County. Traffic impacts are underway.

The project will widen Route 33 in the area of Home Depot/Tinseltown Access Road, Wegman Road and Pixley Road in order to provide space for an ad-ditional eastbound through lane, plus right-turn lanes to improve traffic flow and safety. Tea at the Beach helps Petra PlaceWhat has become an annual rite of

spring, the Petra Place Counseling Center Tea at the Beach is set for Sunday, April 26 at the Robach Community Center at Ontario Beach Park, from 2 to 5 p.m. The event features a high tea menu including freshly brewed teas and finger foods.

Guests will be inspired by a host of spirit-filled guest speakers who will share their personal stories about journeying towards improved mental health. A num-ber of young performers will provide en-tertainment, and vendors will be on hand to show off their wares. Raffles will round out the event.

This year’s tea is being planned by the many volunteers who give of their time to help the Petra Place cause, as well as in-terns from Roberts Wesleyan College who

spend time at the counseling center as part of their college program.

Located at 888 Long Pond Road in Greece, Petra Place is a 503(c) non-profit agency which offers mental health ser-vices on a sliding scale for the uninsured, as well as provides community outreach as needs are identified. The center relies heavily on donations and support from the community to provide these services.

Donation for the tea is $30. Reserva-tions can be made by calling Petra Place at 739-7777. Guests can leave a message and calls for reservations will be returned.

For information about Petra Place ser-vices and future fund-raisers, like the or-ganization on Facebook or join their mail-ing list by calling the center.

TEARS AMONGST THE FLOWERS

www.burgerfuneralhome.com

Sending flowers to the funeral home not only provides a fitting tribute to the deceased, but it also comforts the living. Because these arrangements are often large and formal, they are usually selected by the deceased’s family to incorporate into the graveside services. Sympathy flowers, on the other hand, can be sent directly to the homes of family members, friends, acquaintances, and business associates of the deceased. Arrangements of this sort are usually small- or medium-sized, which makes them suitable for placement on side tables and for use as centerpieces. Those interested in sending a more lasting form of condolence may want to consider

sending a plant, which will continue to grow and bloom in memory of the deceased.

Sending a floral tribute is an appropriate way of expressing sympathy to the family of the deceased. Flowers express a feeling of life and beauty and can offer much comfort. Their fragrant beauty and comforting qualities serve as a herald of hope reminding us of the spirit of life. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Fun for many at Sweden/ClarksonRecreation’s Easter event

The Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Department held its annual Easter event on Saturday, March 28. The 8th Annual Pancake Breakfast, presented by the VanDusen and Wisnowski families, raised $410 in donations for the Brockport Food Shelf. Additionally, the face painting booth run by long-time volunteer and Brockport resident Nancy Breslawski raised $80 for the Brockport Food Shelf.

With over 300 people in attendance, the morning was filled with crafts, inflatables, a temporary tattoo station, bunny hop game, and of course, the East Egg Hunt. The Easter Bunny made a special appearance taking pictures with all the children. Soridalys Cruz Torres was the jelly bean contest winner. She guessed 602 - there were 603 total. The Alpha Phi Omega volunteers from The College at Brockport helped make this event possible.

Strong West’s renovated second floor to houseoncology and other servicesby Kristina Gabalski

Construction crews are busy at Strong West in Brockport as work is well under-way on a complete renovation of the sec-ond floor of the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital building.

Bryan O’Donovan, Strong West Adminis-trator of Operations, says the space which formerly housed the ICU and in-patient beds is being converted to house the Wilm-ot Cancer Institute, Interlakes Oncology and Hematology and Brockport Medical Associates, a primary care provider.

“Everything has been stripped,” he says of the second floor, “it will now be com-pletely modern and state of the art.”

Both Interlakes Oncology, staffed by Robert Asbury, M.D., Jessica Kleiner, M.D., Alexander Solky, M.D., Lisa Acosta, P.A., and Cindy Ingalls, P.A., and Brock-port Medical Associates Primary Care, staffed by Alex Fahoury, M.D., and Chris-tina William, M.D., are currently housed at 156 West Avenue on the ground floor of the Strong West complex.

The move will help Strong West con-tinue its commitment to patient-centered care, O’Donovan says.

Primary Care will go from 1,960 sq. ft. and four small exam rooms to 7,350 sq. ft. with seven large exam rooms which for-merly served as in-patient rooms with two beds. Interlakes currently occupies 2,000 sq. ft. and has three exam rooms and six infusion chairs. The new location on the second floor encompasses 3,601 sq. ft. with four large exam rooms. The six infusion chairs will remain the same, but there will be much more space and brighter light from second-story windows. The new lo-cation will also feature one large private infusion room.

O’Donovan explains the current Inter-lakes location, “.... is not efficient for infu-sion, patients can be there for hours,” he says. The new location is, “designed with patients in mind.”

Much time and effort went into design-ing the new space which is roomy and bathed with natural light from the win-dows. O’ Donovan explains that the Inter-

lakes space will be separate from the Pri-mary Care office space.

On the Primary Care side of the second floor, the waiting room/check-in/check-out have been designed, “with efficiency for patients to get in and out,” O’Donovan says and emphasizes that with the oncol-ogy/primary care move to the second floor, Strong is continuing its commitment to, “provide excellent access to health care services.” The project, which has included a complete overhaul of the second floor’s infrastructure, has been a major invest-ment for Strong/UR Medicine, O’Donovan says.

“The building was never wired for elec-tronic medical records,” he explains, “ev-erything behind the walls and above the ceiling is new,” - that includes HVAC and fireproofing.

The middle section of the second floor in-cludes a new nurses’ station, a locker room for staff as well as a bright new staff break room that features a wall of windows. “It’s the best break room in all Strong Memo-rial Hospital,” O’ Donovan says.

Former in-patient rooms along the north side of the floor outside the oncology space will be used for physician offices.

Everything has been designed with fu-ture expansion in mind, O’Donovan adds and notes that with the renovation of the second floor, Strong West is now, “using the entire property.”

The target date for opening the second floor is June 1 and O’Donovan says an open house for the public will be planned around that time. “We love to have the community come back,” he says, noting that many people remember what the up-per floors of the facility were like when it was Lakeside Memorial Hospital.

In the past 18 months since Strong West opened in Brockport, employment at the facility has grown from 30 to 115 full-time positions, he says.

“Morale is very high,” O’Donovan ob-serves, “and we are getting great patient feedback. We feel really good about what we have done to fulfill the promise we made to the community.”

College at Brockport’s Chamber Ballet combines talents in music and dance

The College at Brockport’s Department of Dance presents a new ensemble, Cham-ber Ballet Brockport, for two nights only. The new ensemble, with artistic direction by Brockport faculty Vanessa Van Wormer and musical direction by Eastman School of Music alumnus Hilary Glen, features choreography by multiple guest artists, and performances by students from the Department of Dance and Eastman School of Music. The concerts take place Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25 at 7:30 pm. The performances are in the Rose L. Strasser Studio in Hartwell Hall, Kenyon

Street, on the Brockport campus. A $5 do-nation is requested, and tickets are avail-able at the door. Proceeds benefit future programming and community outreach by Chamber Ballet Brockport.

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - April 12, 2015 7Lecture series continues with “American Arts and Crafts Movement” April 23

This season’s lecture series at the Morgan-Manning House in Brockport continues on Thursday, April 23. Rose Welch of the Osher Institute will discuss the Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1880s to 1920s and how it changed the exterior and interior design of American homes.

Her presentation will include photos and commentary on some of the furnishings and woodwork in the Morgan-Manning House, built in 1854.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Landmark home at 151 Main Street in Brockport, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society. Admission is free and refresh-ments will be served. For information about the program, phone the WMHS office at (585) 637-3645.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Rose Welch has lived in Maryland and New York state for most of her life. Rose was an art educator for 34 years in private and public schools in the Rochester area specializing in painting, ceramics and portfolio preparation. She received her art education degree and New York State permanent certifi-cation from Nazareth College of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Now retired, she is currently teaching art history and art criticism classes for the Osher Institute at the Rivers Run campus near R.I.T. She pursues her own interests in painting and fine craft and exhibits locally.

The Western Monroe Historical Society is celebrating its Golden Anniversary in 2015 with the theme “Out of the Ashes.” A 50th Anniversary Birthday Cake will be part of the refreshments after the event. On April 23, 1965, exactly 50 years prior to this presentation, a Provisional Charter was granted by the Board of Regents of the State of New York (made permanent in 1968). The Historical Society has served the community by preserving the home as a museum and repository of historical documents, and by sponsoring social, educational, and cultural events.

Avoid High HeelsHigh-heeled shoes may be one way to make a fashion statement. But it’s a risky way, any chiropractor will tell you. Excessive wear of high-heeled shoes puts not only a woman’s feet at risk, but also her knees, hips and back. And it’s not just chiropractors who be-moan the perils of the high heel. Podiatrists, doctors who specialize in treatment of the foot, also have long warned against them.

The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, a non-profit organiza-tion dedicated to increasing public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic treatment, recommends that women wear heels that are no more than two inches high. The organization also recommends that if a woman must wear high heels for a particular function or professional obligation, she should wear them for no more than two hours a day. For one thing, the gravity-defying design of the shoe interferes with the foot’s weight-bearing function and can cause strain in the lower back and neck. In addition, the position of the foot in the shoe forces a shortening of muscles and tendons in the calf, which can cause an abnormal tension in the legs.

Your feet are the foundation on which everything else rests, so you should treat them with care. That includes wearing quality, appropri-ate footwear, whether it’s for work or play. Talk with your chiroprac-tor about the right shoes for your lifestyle.

Recreation Assistant Beverly Stevens, The Center in Brockport Building Supervisor Deanna Irvine and Carrie Serow, employment specialist at Lifetime Assistance, are shown inside the Café, formerly the game room at the Sweden Senior Center in Brockport. The room was refurbished as part of the transformation of the building from the Sweden Senior Center to The Center, located at 133 State Street in the Village of Brockport. K Gabalski photo.

Transformation of senior center brings fresh interest in programsby Kristina Gabalski

A transformation is well underway at The Center - formerly known as the Swe-den Senior Center - in the Village of Brock-port.

“We’ve moved rooms around, cleaned out and re-organized,” says Building Supervi-sor Deanna Irvine, who began working in the position just after the first of the year.

The Sweden Town Board decided during their budget process in 2014 to continue to fund The Center following a public outcry over fears that the town would close the Senior Center and sell the building located at 133 State Street.

Town leaders made it clear last year that they wanted to see greater participa-tion by community members if The Center was to continue to receive funding.

Much is happening and Irvine says her job involves working with staff members and volunteers to continue to, “build pro-grams and take care of participants ... we want to make it a more family environ-ment,” she explains.

Irvine says programs offered by the Sweden/Clarkson Community Rec Cen-ter on Lake Road will not be replicated at the State Street site. Family activities are being developed and might include chess tournaments or a community garden, Ir-vine says. She is also working to establish new outside connections which provide income, low or no cost programming, and help with dining services provided by The Center.

“We’re looking outside the box,” Irvine explains, “you try ten things and maybe eight work.”

One successful partnership which will likely continue to grow is with Lifetime Assistance Inc., which recently increased its presence at The Center. On March 16, The Center became a pre-work site for Lifetime through The Center’s dining program - which serves a noontime meal Monday-Friday as well as 2 to 3 in-house monthly meals.

The program with Lifetime includes a full-time job coach, one part-time Peer-place data collections and input person

and five Lifetime pre-workplace clients who are at the center from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. each day.

“It’s a wonderful program,” Irvine notes. The program is a win-win, helping Life-time to get more members out of their Paul Road facility while assisting The Center with the promotion and growth of new pro-grams and decreasing payroll needs.

The Lifetime clients help in the kitchen and receive training to prepare them for work in the food service industry and res-taurants in about 12 to 18 months.

Noon-hour meals are provided through Monroe County/ABVI, but now Irvine says, Lifetime clients help to make the brought-in meals more appetizing. “They are able to add that extra touch,” she says, for example, “we are using china instead of paper plates.” Two in-house meals are also planned in April - one on April 29 featur-ing spaghetti and meatballs and a perfor-mance by the Senior Chorus, and a second luncheon the following day, April 30, fea-turing a hot dog and hamburger cookout with a performance by the Brockport Cen-tral School Hilltop Singers and Top Brass.

“After the kids perform, they will stay and have lunch with the seniors,” Irvine says.

The Center is also opening its Cafe, lo-cated in the former game room. Irvine says a full-service meal will be provided every Tuesday with food brought in through Monroe County/ABVI, but served in a more upscale fashion instead of cafeteria style.

Sweden resident Gary Skoog was in-strumental in the conversion of the room, Irvine says, removing wallpaper and ap-plying a fresh coat of paint. Rick Popen, Greg Kenny, Judy Perkins and Lori Skoog also helped out with the effort. The Cafe is also the site of a new movie and snack pro-gram from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays. The cost is $2.50/person, and Irvine says The Center will make the movie family-friendly and kid appealing for the summer break months of July and August.

Irvine is working to procure community sponsors - local and regional companies - to help support The Center and its pro-

grams, and is having success. “All I have to do is ask,” she says.

Duane Beckett of Sunnking donated three computers and a flat-screen TV and Irvine has worked with Medical Motors (Monroe County) to take full advantage of their van service. The van provides regu-lar trips to Wegmans, Wal-Mart, Aldi’s, Goodwill, Seymour Library and the Dollar Store.

Agape Physical Therapy is offering Thera-bands workouts at The Center on Thursday afternoons, and Brockport Am-bulance will be providing CPR classes at a cost of $20, Irvine says.

“People can make reservations by call-ing the office (637-8161),” Irvine says.

A partnership with Foodlink is also in the works, to move their site from the Oak Orchard Health complex on West Avenue to The Center in June/July. “It would ben-efit the community a lot,” Irvine explains, “it would be more accessible.”

And that’s not all - additional activities at The Center include renting-out the facil-

ity for private parties and gatherings; the Give-A-Lift program for those who need rides to and from appointments; quilting, sewing and knitting community service groups; Silver Sneakers; The Center Fit-ness Room; and classes - including line dancing, Tai Chi, and Qigong Shibashi.

The Baking Club meets on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. to bake and package cookies for sale. The club is open to anyone 12 or older and proceeds from cookie sales benefit SSAI, which sup-ports and improves senior programs in the area.

“Individual (town and village) board members have stopped in and are happy with the changes - they see the value in The Center,” she says.

For information on programming call the center at 637-8161. Current hours: April 1 through August 31 are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
