Once the students decided that they wanted to help the homeless, Christina Wessman, an eighth grader at Merton Williams Middle School, took the idea and ran with it, making lists of people to ask for donations and the supplies they would need. The group decided that they would spend a Saturday outside, no matter what the weather, living in tents with only a fire to keep warm. They gathered donations from family members, friends, teachers and local businesses, raising over $1,200 so far for two organizations that help homeless in the community – the Open Door Mission and Bethany House. The Open Door Mission, located on Plym- outh Ave. in Rochester, provides overnight housing for men, community meals for men, women and children, and religious services. Bethany House in Rochester is a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality that provides emergency housing for women and women with children, and assistance to women with food, formula, diapers, cloth- ing, household items, and personal hygiene products. “We watched a video about a tent city in Nashville, TN that was ruined by a flood,” said Logan Matthews, a third grader at Village Elementary School. “Some people were mad because they didn’t want it set up again near them.” The group borrowed tents and sleeping bags for their own tent city from Mandy and Paul Tramonto and Beth and Jon Jamison, family friends. Conservation Tree and Shrub Program releases 2015 species list Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District has released their Conservation Tree and Shrub species list for the spring of 2015. Offered for pre-order this year are more than 59 dif- ferent species of bare-root conifers, hardwood trees, shrubs, wildflowers and groundcovers, as well as seed mixes and other products used for conservation projects. The distribution of the plant material will occur at the Monroe County ecopark on April 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The remaining plant stock will be sold on April 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Hilton students participate in a Tuba Christmas - It isn’t often that musicians get to deck out their tubas for the holidays, but that’s just what five Hilton students did when they participated in a Tuba Christmas concert at Hochstein School of Music and Dance, sponsored by the City of Rochester. Over 150 tuba players of all ages adorned their tubas with garland and Christmas lights and played holiday favorites. The concert was under the direction of Glenn Call, who has conducted a Tuba Christmas for 32 years, Casey Springstead and Jeremy Stoner. Drew Bate-man, a fifth grader at Village Elementary School who comes from a family of musicians, said he decided to play the tuba because the band didn’t have a lot of them. Clarkson resident named College at Brockport VP for Advancementby Kristina Gabalski
Clarkson resident Mike Andriatch will become the College at Brockport’s new Vice President for Advancement on Janu-ary 1.
Andriatch, a Brockport alumnus, has served the college for nearly three de-cades, most recently as Assistant Vice President for Advancement. He will re-place Roxanne Johnston, who is stepping down to spend more time with family. She will remain with the college part-time as senior development officer.
Andriatch received his bachelor’s degree from the College at Brockport in 1985.
He was able to begin working in the sports information office part-time after graduation as he had completed an intern-ship there during his last semester.
“I feel way too young to be in my 30th year at Brockport,” Andriatch says.
He has served the college over those years in various sports information, alum-ni relations, development and advance-ment capacities.
“The people I have had the honor to learn from and work for and with - John Halstead, Roxanne Johnston and so many others - have shaped my professional ca-reer,” Andriatch says. “As we transition, our Advancement team will work incred-ibly hard to reach our Comprehensive Campaign goal ahead of schedule and move Brockport’s engagement with all of our constituents to new heights.”
The $25 million Comprehensive Cam-paign is the largest in size, scope and di-mension in the college’s history. “We will be doing many more campaigns down the road,” Andriatch says.
He notes that his experiences at Brock-port have prepared him well for his new, executive position.
“I’ve created relationships over the years with alumni and future alumni,” Andriatch explains.
He says he finds his work very fulfilling, as his job involves speaking with donor alumni, professors emeriti, retired faculty and staff, “... to help them give back to

Brockport ... whether that’s coming in to talk to students, reconnecting with other alumni, or in the case of a significant gift, matching (the gift) to the needs of the col-lege.”
Andriatch grew up in the Buffalo area, but has made the Sweden/Brockport/Clarkson community his home since he came to Brockport for college.
“I’ve had the opportunity to go other places, but have stayed,” he says. “Brock-port is a special place, both the community and the college. I’m looking forward to the next challenge in my career.”
Andriatch and his wife have three chil-dren and he is a former member and past president of the Brockport Central School District Board of Education.
College at Brockport President John R. Halstead, PhD., says the appointment of Andriatch to the position of VP for Advancement makes great sense, “As a Brockport alumnus and long-time alumni and development person, Mike knows our college’s culture and our various stake-
holders well. He will be a trusted advance-ment leader and assure great continuity in fund-raising.”

The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce has an-nounced its 2014 awards winners, to be honored at the Annual Awards Dinner on Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Plantation Party House, 1875 North Union Street, Spen-cerport. David Moore is the recipient of the 2014 Clyde W. Carter Citizen of the Year Award. David Moore has served on the BOCES School Board, Spencerport School Board and Ogden Farmers’ Library Board of Directors. Today, as Vice President, David Moore is a contributing member of the Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce Board and its bylaws resource. He emcees the annual Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner, hosting in a friendly, humorous manner. In her nomination, Chamber Board member and The Unique Shop business owner Ginny Swarthout stated that David Moore currently is President of the Spencerport Federal Credit Union Board and Treasurer of Spencerport Canal Days. She added that David Moore owns an established accounting business and works closely with clients, helping with financial decisions. Brockport student talent on display at special Hill School dance performances
Talented young dancers from Brockport’s Fred W. Hill School worked hard for ten weeks, learning proper warm-up technique, jazz movements, stage language and chore-ography. The 12 fifth graders worked closely with mentor and graduate student Briana Kelly, along with her advisor Professor Juanita Suarez, the director of The College at Brockport’s Dance Department and In-terdisciplinary Arts for Children Program. The training culminated in two special performances for classmates, parents and the community on Dec. 1 at the Hill School Cafetorium.
The Academically Talented Program at Hill School partners with The College at Brockport and The Arts for Children In-terdisciplinary Program, as well as with a wide variety of other community mentors. It offers advanced students the opportunity for enriched experiences in many fields, beyond the usual coursework. Students qualify for the program through their
interest and their ability to keep up with any work missed during class time. Most qualified students are already performing well academically in all subject areas.
“During the upcoming spring semester, we will have 22 fourth-grade students who will be working with a Brockport College dance class at Hartwell Hall,” says Hill School Enrichment Specialist Archer Noble. “We are hoping to be able to offer opportuni-ties like these each school year.”
The Academically Talented Program is always looking for mentors with special-ized skill sets. Currently there are mentors involved with wood working, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, dance, mineralogy/lapidary, robotics and music theory/composition. “Spinning Tops” programscheduled for Morgan-Manning House January 15
On Thursday, January 15, at Brockport’s Morgan-Man-ning House, Don Olney will present spinning tops from his collection of 7,000 tops from all over the world.
Olney has been a spinning top collector for over 20 years. He brings selected tops to nursing homes, schools, churches, Scout meetings, adjusting his show to all ages. He will demonstrate and tell stories about tops in differ-ent cultures.
Olney owned The Toycrafter in Rochester for about 35 years, making wooden toys including spinning tops. Cur-rently, he and his wife run the Moving Wood Studio in Rochester, a home for all items they designed that involve various motions, such as spinning, sliding, rotating, pop-ping, blinking, swinging, balancing.
The program is sponsored by the Western Monroe His-torical Society and begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Morgan-Man-ning House, 151 Main Street, Brockport. For information, phone the WMHS office at (585) 637-3645. January 22 is the back up date in case of inclement weather conditions.

Bowling tournament to raise money for Ebola emergency responses
Roberts Wesleyan College’s Math and Science and Nursing clubs will host “Strike Out Ebola & Spare Lives,” a bowling event to help raise awareness of and money to fight the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The event will take place at AMF Gates Lanes from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 31. All proceeds will go to World Hope International’s Ebola Emergency Response.
Each ticket includes bowling, shoe rental, pizza and a nacho bar. There will be a raffle for gift baskets and other prizes. Tickets are required and must be purchased by Monday, January 26. General admission tickets cost $20, college student tickets cost $15, and family deal tickets cost $60 for a maximum of six people.

Senior Jake Burgio registered a double-double and sophomore Antonio Alvarez led his team with 16 points as Brockport defeated Spencerport 54-34 to advance to the championship game of the 16th annual Doug Westcott Memorial boys basketball tournament.
Spencerport jumped out to an early lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Ryan Gentile, a lay-up from junior Zekiah Ow-ens and a pair of field goals by junior John Feeney, but the Blue Devils began to take over the contest with a 14-0 run beginning in the final minute of the first quarter.
Alvarez netted six of those points, which also included a Ja’Quan McGill runner and three-pointer plus a pair of free throws from Burgio.
The Blue Devils defense held the Rang-
ers to just five points in the second quarter as they built a 31-15 halftime advantage.
Burgio scored half of his game total 12 points in the third quarter to help Brock-port build a 23 point lead.
Spencerport again found some offense over the final eight minutes on consecutive baskets by Gentile, Owens, David DeBellis and Corey Lawhorn, but it proved to be too late.
Gentile and Feeney led the Rangers with eight points each with Feeney adding ten rebounds. Owens finished with seven points and four rebounds.
Burgio’s double-double was a 12 point, ten rebound effort for Brockport. Alvarez had a game-high 16 points with eight re-bounds and three steals while McGill had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists to help the Blue Devils earn their third win of the season.
Brockport Blue Devils - Hilton Cadets tieby Warren Kozireski
Hilton twice overcame one-goal defi-cits with Jake Palumbo netting the tying goal with less than two minutes remain-ing in the second period as the Cadets and Brockport skated to a 3-3 tie in high school hockey.
“We have the potential to be really good, but we’re playing too inconsistent to be a factor,” Hilton head coach Chris Monfiletto said. “If we start taking care of the little things, we could be factor in Section V.”
Palumbo gave Hilton a 1-0 lead at 9:13 of the first period when he pounded home a perfect pass from behind the net by Jus-tin Allen. Todd Higgins also assisted on the play.
Brockport tied the game 1-1 in the sec-ond period to begin a five goal outburst by both teams. Mitchell Henshaw’s point shot found the back of the net for his team leading sixth goal of the season with as-sists from Dylan Sharpe and Matt Roe on the power play tally.
The Blue Devils took their first lead of the contest just 36 seconds later as Alex Harley converted a three-on-two break on a tap-in off a Sharpe shot. Defenseman Chevy Ioannone also assisted.
Hilton tied it 2-2 at 5:29 of the second as Sam Sedia scored his first goal as a Ca-det off passes from Hunter and Brenden Howell.
On the next shift, Brockport again took a one-goal lead as Sharpe knocked in the rebound of a Henshaw shot 18 seconds later.
But, at 13:34 of the second period, Mitch Palumbo won an offensive zone draw back to the right point. Higgins’ shot was stopped, but Jake Palumbo scored on the rebound for his team-high eighth goal and 17th point.
Both teams combined for 20 shots over the final period plus overtime, but Brock-port goaltender Riley Emmerson and Hil-ton’s Patrick Dennehy each preserved the point.
“We’re there,” Brockport assistant coach Alan Barton said. “We’re still learning as a team, so I think we can surprise some teams later on.”
Hilton entered the final week in Decem-ber with a 4-2-1 record and in fifth place in Division II while the Blue Devils were 1-5-1 with a win over Aquinas in the sea-son opener.

hilTON•Hendershot, Raymond E., Sr., December 23, 2014. Pre-deceased by his wives, Doris (Woodams) in 1968, and Helen (Rowley), in 1999. Also predeceased by daughter, Virginia Ritzenthaler. Survived by his children, Raymond (Nancy) Hendershot Jr., Shirley (Tom) Lester, Janet Hendershot and Ronald (Nancy) Hendershot; his brother, Edward “Bud” (Sylvia) Hendershot; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Margaret Hendershot; special friend, Glennys Paine; many nieces, nephews and friends. Also predeceased by his brother, Leland; and his sisters, Marion Graupman, Mildred Voke, Evelyn Heise, Irene Hall and Leona Peck.
A Celebratory Service to honor his rich 100-year life will be held on his birthday in June 2015. Donations can be made to Hilton-Parma Senior Center, 59 Henry Street, Hilton, NY 14468 in his memory.
KENT•Sprague, Glenn W., age 81, died December 30, 2014 in United Memorial Medical Center following a long illness. Glenn was a Veteran of the US Army and was stationed in Alaska. He worked for the National Security Agency for 30 plus years, serving part of that time in Cheltenham, Eng-land. Mr. Sprague was a member of the Gaines Congrega-tional Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hazel (Woolston), his three children: Michael (Donna) Sprague of Louisiana, Jaimie (Stephen) Williams of Virginia, Thomas (Kerri) Sprague of Maryland; six grandchildren: Jennifer, Jonathan, Samantha, Zachary, Taylor, Kylie; and three great grandchildren: Anthony, Jade, and Tristen.
His Funeral Service was held January 2 at the Christo-pher Mitchell Funeral Homes, Inc., Albion. Glenn’s son, Rev. Dr. Michael Sprague officiated at the service. Interment in Mount Albion Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Gaines Congregational Church, 14023 Ridge Road, Albion, NY, 14411 in her memory.
KENDAll•Anderson, Karen L. (Kriesche), age 68, died Decem-ber 24, 2014 on the day of her 50th Wedding Anniversary. Predeceased by husband Charles and son John. Survived by daughters, Angela (Blair) Bobzin and Michelle (Lance) Werth of Kendall; daughter-in-law, Terri Raso of Virgina; grandchildren, Ashleigh Anderson, Kyle and Brad Bobzin, Austin, Brady and Colton Werth; sister, Marie (Don) King of Carlton; nieces, nephews and friends. She was a General Motors retiree.
Her Funeral Service was held December 29 at Merrill-Grinnell Funeral Home, Albion. Burial in Sandy Creek Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice in her memory.
•Sorg, Alfred, Suddenly on December 21, 2014 at age 73. Predeceased by his parents Jacob and Theresia; and his nephew Brian Furness. He is survived by his siblings Helmuth (Terry) Sorg, Linda (Donald) Siracusa, Charles J. Sorg, John C. (Sharlene) Sorg; many nieces and neph-ews.
Services will be held at a later date.
SPENCERPORT•Kent, Richard A., December 21, 2014 at age 94. Prede-ceased by his son, Thomas Kent. Survived by his loving wife, Jean Kent; children, Mary (Karl) Schroeder, Jim (Kay Obierne) Kent, Kitty (Rev. Timothy) Meyer, Joe (Gina) Kent, Anne (Dan) Hull; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grand-children; three step-grandchildren; sister, Ruth DeWalt; several nieces and nephews and dear friends.
Visitation is Friday, January 9, 2015, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Walker Brothers Funeral Home, Spencerport. Richard’s funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday, January 10 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 55 Mar-tha Street, Spencerport. H.B. LechnerHadrian Blair Lechner, of North Chili, passed away December 23, 2014 after a brief illness. He was 94 years old.
He was educated at Spring Arbor College, Michigan State Normal College, and Boston University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by Eastman Kodak and by Bausch & Lomb. He taught at Roberts Wesleyan College and at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Mr. Lechner was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Mary Margaret Sumner; by his brother Myron; and by his sister Eleanor Burr. He is survived by his sister Grace Ryerson; his sons Joseph and Jonathan; grandchildren Paul, Dawn and Sarah; and great-grand-daughter Kaleia.
A celebration of his life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Pearce Memorial Church in North Chili. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make a memorial contribution to Free Methodist
