DISTRIBUTED TO CLARKSON, HAMLIN AND KENDALL “Mom was raised by immigrant Irish parents who instilled in her and her siblings a sense of hard work and dedi- cation to the family, and she married a man who believed in that same ethic,” Maggie, Jim, John and Kevin say. “To- gether our mom and dad raised us with those same beliefs.” Although some of her grandchildren live out of town, “I’m fortunate that all the kids live close-by. They are all in Monroe County,” Bridie explains about her children. She notes the business is mainly a weekend business, which can be hard on family life, but many fam- ily activities have taken place at the pub over the years. “We have had weddings and showers and stag parties here,” she says. After Seamus was di- agnosed with untreat- able cancer in 2005, Bridie took care of all his needs including, “... drawing fluid from his lung and making end- less trips to doctors and the hospital,” Maggie wrote. Seamus lost his battle in 2007, and Bridie’s children say she had many difficult decisions to make, “...(whether) to keep her house, where to live, and the most difficult ... should she keep oper- ating the family business, McGinnity’s? After careful consideration and input from the family, she made those difficult decisions with self-assurance and will- ingness to move forward with her life.” Maggie, Jim, John and Kevin say they are very proud of what their mother has accomplished on her own over the last ten years and how she partnered with their dad for almost 50 years. “Seamus had a saying, ‘keep the wheel turning,’ to keep moving forward and make prog- ress in life. Mom overcame so many chal- lenges and continues to ‘keep the wheel turning,’” they say. “At 76 years old, she still manages McGinnity’s and goes to work each day,” Maggie notes in her nomination. “She completes all of the ordering, does the bookkeeping - including payroll, taxes, and all the other time consuming be- hind-the-scenes work needed to run a successful business.” Continued on page 8 Bridie McGinnity selected Business Leader of the Year by Kristina Gabalski Local businesswoman and Irish wife and mother extraordinaire Bridget (Bri- die) McGinnity is being honored at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade festivi- ties in Rochester. Bridie McGinnity selected Business Leader of the Year

by Kristina Gabalski

Local businesswoman and Irish wife and mother extraordinaire Bridget (Bri-die) McGinnity is being honored at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade festivi-ties in Rochester.

Bridie has been selected as the 2015 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Business Lead-er of the Year.

She has spent the last four decades helping to run the family business, Mc-Ginnity’s Restaurant and Party House, 534 West Ridge Road. McGinnity’s will mark it’s 40th an-niversary in business in 2015, making it the oldest Irish pub in Rochester.

“It’s a great honor,” Bri-die says of the recognition, and notes there are a lot of other business people out there who might have been chosen, “I feel very privileged,” she says.

Born the daughter of Irish immigrants, Bri-die grew up on a farm in Mendon, NY. She met her husband, Seamus McGin-nity, in the late 1950s in Rochester, shortly after he arrived in this country from Monaghan, Ireland.

Hilton Firemen’s Carnival changes dates, expands for 2015by Grace Griffee

People come from all around to attend the Hilton Firemen’s Carnival, one of the area’s largest. Traditionally held the last week in July, this year’s carnival will move to July 15-18 due to a change in vendor.

“We were at a point where we were starting to get complaints from the pub-lic and knew we had to do better,” said Mark Kalen, carnival co-chair. The Carni-val Committee started looking for a new vendor two years ago. “There aren’t a lot of vendors who can do a carnival that’s not the size of a state or county fair” said Kalen. “It took us a long time to find one that had the quality of rides and attrac-tions we were looking for.”

After searching the east coast and meet-ing with multiple vendors, the committee decided on Gillette Shows from Pittsfield, MA. “It’s a family-owned and operated business, and to say they take good care of their rides is an understatement,” said Ryan Hess, carnival co-chair. In business for over 60 years, Gillette Shows will oper-ate a minimum of 21 rides and 14 games at the Hilton Carnival, including a giant Fer-ris wheel, classic carousel and the popular Air Force One. “I think the community will be happy with the change,” he added.

However, a change in vendor also means a change in date for the event. “It wasn’t a decision we took lightly,” said Kalen. “But the committee felt it was worth the risk to change the date and upgrade as opposed to keeping the same date and seeing the car-nival further deteriorate.” The Hilton Fire Department supported the decision.

As a volunteer organization, the car-nival is an important fundraising event for the department. In fact, they began raising funds back in 1901 with an an-nual Field Day, which was expanded into a three-day carnival in 1930, and became the Firemen’s Fair in 1950. In more recent

years the event was renamed the Hilton Firemen’s Carnival and it became a four-day event.

“The carnival keeps our volunteer am-bulances on the road,” said Kalen. “Ambu-lance rides are free to the community and the carnival allows us to do that.” While 95 percent of the funds raised through the carnival go toward Emergency Medi-cal Services, the remainder pays for the annual volunteer banquet and shirts for volunteers.

The carnival also supports local not-for-profit organizations that run food stands during the four-day event. While organi-zations need to apply for a space, the fire department does not charge for the space or take a cut in sales.

As for ticket prices, they will remain the same this year. “We’re proud that we’ve been able to keep this a family-friendly event and give the community more bang for their buck,” said Hess.

For other information, visit the 2015 Hilton Fire Department Carnival on Face-book and look for Carnival advertisements in coming months in Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald newspapers.

Volunteers read to students to mark Agricultural Literacy Week in March

In celebration of National Agricultural Literacy Week, March 16-20 volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders. In Genesee County over 40 volunteers will be visiting and reading at schools throughout the county. The book will be given to the school library with a bookplate recognizing the donor and NY Ag Literacy Week.

This year’s book is Weaving the Rainbow, written by George Ella Lyon and illustrated by Stephanie Anderson. It is a story which blends agriculture and art. A young woman raises sheep, shears them for their wool, cleans and cards the wool, spins and dyes the wool, ultimately using it to create beautiful works of woven art from the fiber. The story will help students begin to make the connection between agriculture and its many uses and influences.

The focus this year is on fiber production in New York state from sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, rabbits and others. Last year, 1,400 books were donated statewide while thousands of students participated in educational activities.

For more information about NY Ag Literacy Week or Agriculture in the Classroom contact Barbara Sturm, at 585-343-3040 ext. 122 or at [email protected] or visit our website: http://genesee.cce.cornell.edu/ag-in-the-classroom.

Do an AC check-up(StatePoint) When the weather heats up, your heating, ventila-tion and air conditioning (HVAC) system quickly becomes a most valuable player in your home life and stays that way for several months. Do you know if it’s time to maintain, repair or replace your air conditioning system?

Here are some preventive tasks to take that can extend the life of air conditioning equipment:

•Change air filters: A general rule is to change indoor ductwork fil-ters every three months or at the beginning of every heating and

cooling season. Ensure the filter is sized correctly, fitting snuggly.

•Keep the outdoor unit clean: Keep coils free of debris by hosing off with light pressure. Any bush-es or shrubs should be trimmed back away from the unit.

•Let air flow: Maintain a reliable airflow to reduce moisture buildup which can lead to mold. Keep vents open. Similarly, keep inter-nal doors open inside your home to maintain air flow.

•Clean duct grills: Annually, clean the vents and grills at the open-ing of each duct in every room by lifting the grill out of the floor, wiping with a rag or vacuuming to remove dust and debris.

•Keep condensate drain open: A stopped up condensate line can lead to expensive water damage. Keep the drain line clean and the drain tube open and clear to pre-vent backup.

Coalition works to get word out about impact of Social Hosting Law

Rochester Regional Health System Chemical Depen-dency Professionals, Monroe County Sheriff Office – Zone C and Nick Mieney Insurance Agent located in the Vil-lage of Hilton have partnered with Hilton Parma Drug Intervention and Community Education, a community anti-drug coalition, on raising awareness of the Monroe County Social Host Law.

The team is hosting a community event at the Village Community Center in Hilton on March 25 beginning at

6:30 p.m. “The Social Host law is designed to protect our youth from underage drinking” says Deputy Scott Mc-Kinney from the Monroe County Sheriff Office – Zone C. “It’s important for parents and caregivers to know the law, how it is applied and other laws that one could risk being charged with if hosting an underage party.” Nick Mieney will present the risks and implications for home-owners and the devastation it can have on home and/or car insurance costs.

Michael Celentino, Rochester Regional Chemical De-pendency Professional will also be presenting. Organizer Laurie Polatas added, “It’s not okay to just take the keys away and think that is an acceptable intervention. To pur-chase or serve alcohol to anyone under 21 is a crime. We need help advocating these laws within the community.”

Registrations to this free event can be made by email-ing [email protected] or through the coalition’s Face-book page at: https://www.facebook.com/HP.DICE

The educational event in March kicks off a five month awareness campaign to address underage drinking that includes National Alcohol Awareness in April, Prom and Ball Seasons in May and Graduations in June and July.

The coalition was founded in 2014. To become a mem-ber of the coalition, email [email protected].

For information on substance abuse services or to schedule an evaluation, call Rochester Regional Chemi-cal Dependency at (585) 723-7740. Evaluations are often available within 24 hours.

Hilton CSD kindergarten registration March 16-19

Hilton Central School District will hold its kindergar-ten registration in March. Parents of children whose fifth birthday falls on or before December 1 may enroll their children in Hilton’s full-day kindergarten program.

Kindergarten registration will take place at Village and Northwood Elementary Schools on Monday, March 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 17 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Registration at Quest Elementary School will be held Wednesday, March 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, March 19 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The dates in the district calendar are incorrect.

To register, bring: original birth certificate, proof of residency, proof of immunizations and custody or guard-ianship papers (if applicable). All families who partici-pated in the school census will have a kindergarten reg-istration packet mailed to them the first week of March. Anyone who did not receive a packet, can call 392-1000, ext. 7031 to be placed on the mailing list. Also, residents can complete the New Student Update Form on the dis-trict website (Hilton.k12.ny.us) under “Helpful Links” and “Registration” to ensure that they are on the mail-ing list.

Information about preschool screening (birth to age five) for possible developmental delays is available by calling the Hilton School District Office of Learning Support Services (Special Education) at 392-1000, ext. 6054.

The Hilton School District elementary school atten-dance boundary line is Route 261 (Manitou Road) -- all Greece residents attend Northwood Elementary School, 433 North Greece Road and all residents west of the town line (Parma, Clarkson, Hamlin) attend the Village Elementary School, 100 School Lane. Quest Elementary School, 225 West Avenue, is a school of choice and re-quires an approved application before registration.

Westside ChallengerBaseball registration open

Westside Challenger Baseball will enter its fifth season for all area youngsters in Western Monroe County, Orleans and Genesee counties who have physical and/or developmental disabilities and would like to experience baseball that is structured to their needs. Children ages 5 through 18 can participate in a fun, family atmosphere and they will even have a buddy to assist them when needed. There is no cost to any family to have their child play due to sponsorship from area businesses, service organizations and private donations. Players will receive a hat and jersey, trophies at end-of-season family picnic, food and drink after each game and free tickets for players and family to attend a Rochester Red Wings game.

The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give everyone a chance to play. To realize that goal, Challenger has two basic rules: every player bats each inning, and every player plays the field.

Strikes and outs don’t count. Everybody scores and everybody wins.

Challenger Baseball participants learn not only the fundamentals of baseball, but also experience pulling together as a team, being cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers. All games are played Saturday mornings at Nietopski Field at the Town of Sweden Park. Players have also been invited to play in June at the Challenger Baseball World Series at Frontier Field, the home field for the Rochester Red Wings.

The registration deadline is April 20. Forms are available by contacting Jack Milner at 637-5027 or email at [email protected]. Westside Challenger Baseball organizers say they are looking forward to an exciting and fun-filled season, one in which all youngsters have a very positive baseball experience.

Hospice Beats the Winter Blues - For the second year in a row a local farmer has selected Hospice of Orleans to receive a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, a Monsanto Fund. Charles Mathes of Mathes Farms in Holley (right), and Jeff Cunningham, Monsanto’s Northeast Business Manager (left), kicked off the Hospice Beat the Winter Blues event at Leonard

Oakes Estate Winery in Medina by presenting Nyla Gaylord, Director of Development, with a check for $2,500. A sell-out crowd Beat the Winter Blues and enjoyed hors d’oeuves and improvisational jazz and blues by Doug Egling and Mike Putman on guitars. A surprise guest, Kate Egling, sang some old blues tunes accompanied by Doug and Mike. Leonard Oakes Estate Winery, repre-sented by brother and sister duo Wendy Oakes Wilson and Darrel Oakes, served as hosts of the event and provided the first glass of Blanc d’Orleans wine free. Since 2013, for every bottle of their white wine, Blanc d’Orleans sold, $1 goes to Hospice of Orleans, the county’s only licensed provider of comprehensive end-of-life care. “Out of the Ashes” -

Marking the 50th year of the Western Monroe Historical SocietyThe Western Monroe Historical Society is celebrating

its Golden Anniversary this year with the theme “Out of the Ashes.” For 50 years since restoring the Morgan-

Manning House, the WMHS has served the community by preserving the home as museum and by sponsoring social, educational, and cul-tural events.

Betty Nibbelink was one of the early founders of the WMHS with its offices in the Morgan-Manning House on Main Street in Brockport. The home was built in 1854 and damaged by a disastrous fire in 1964. As one of the volunteers who worked on

restoring the home, “Betty was there every work night with the mop-and-fix brigade,” said Eunice Chesnut, WMHS historian emerita. As a master and teacher of Early American Decoration, she helped restore a stained glass window, duplicating the delicate damaged pieces by painting on clear glass. She took the lead in negotiating with the Rochester Landmark Society for aid in historic restoration, eventually achieving Landmark status for the home. A provisional charter was granted to the WMHS in 1965, leading to a final charter in 1968. Betty was also the second president of the WMHS board of trustees.

Bridie gives much of the credit for the success of her business to her staff - a group of six or seven who have totaled up a century of experience. “It’s to their credit that they stayed so long,” Bridie says, and notes the staff continues to do an amazing job every day, “They are so great to work with,” she adds.

She notes another important aspect of McGinnity’s success is that so much of the work was done “in-house.” “My husband did the repairs and remodeling, we didn’t need a serviceman. I worked in the day and he was here every night. We’ve always been here,” she explains.

In 2010, Bridie applied for and received a grant from the City of Rochester to remod-el the exterior of McGinnity’s. She made all the decisions during the construction

process, meeting with contractors, archi-tects and construction workers.

She says the business has had to ad-just over the years with the loss of Kodak employees and competition from fast food chain restaurants at the nearby Rt. 390 interchange, but McGinnity’s has, “made other arrangements to make it work.” There are now dart leagues and a poker club which meets on Thursday. Irish danc-ers - both youngsters and adults - meet at McGinnity’s on Mondays and Wednes-days.

“There are a lot of things going on week after week,” Bridie says and observes that there is still a lot of traffic on Ridge Road.

She is grateful to be in good health and looks forward to many more years in busi-ness. “I’ve still got some more miles,” she says enthusiastically, “I don’t feel like giv-ing up.”

Area Ys host Splash Week

The YMCA of Greater Rochester is of-fering free water-safety and basic-skills program for the entire Greater Rochester community, through its annual Splash Week program, from March 30 to April 3. It has been offered in Greater Rochester for over 10 years.

“Splash Week draws participation from an average of more than 2,000 communi-ty members and their families, and more than 150 volunteers throughout the week,” said Camilla Raimo, association aquatics executive of the YMCA of Greater Roch-ester. “At the YMCA of Greater Rochester we are passionate about the importance of water safety for our community members, and the week aligns with our key pillars of healthy living and youth development. The lessons and skills community mem-bers develop during Splash Week will stay

with them for life.”The YMCA’s Splash Week, presented

by First Niagara, is open to Y members and non-members, and offers morning and afternoon classes for individuals of all ages and skill levels. Classes offered are grouped by age, including child with parent, preschool with parent, preschool, youth, teen, adult and special needs.

Priority registration is offered to non-YMCA members in an effort to get the en-tire community involved. YMCA members may register starting March 16.

Splash Week classes run Monday through Thursday, with family swim time for Splash Week participants and their families on Friday.

The following YMCA of Greater Roches-ter branches are hosting Splash Week:•Northwest Family YMCA, 730 Long Pond Road, Greece•Westside Family YMCA, 920 Elmgrove Road, Gates

Pre-registration is required and space is limited. For information visit roches-terymca.org/splashweek.

Students inducted into Hilton Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society

Merton Williams Middle School recently inducted 56 students into the Hilton Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. After Assistant Principal Michael LeGault welcomed the audience and inductees, Dr. Barbara Surash, assistant superintendent for instruction, delivered the opening remarks. “I enjoy this ceremony because it allows me to see true leaders in the making,” she said. “You hold the attributes needed to make our society great.”

After the officers held the candle lighting ceremony and described the five characteristics of membership – scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character – inductees were introduced by Advisor Steve Cudzilo, congratulated by administrators, received their pin, signed the registry, and together recited the oath.

Criteria for induction include a 95 percent grade point average, two leadership activities and community service hours. Collectively, the new inductees contributed 1,500 hours of community service to organizations, such as Foodlink, St. Ann’s Community, Hilton East, Hilton-Parma Recreation, G.R.A.S.P. and the Juvenile Diabetes Association, just to name a few.

Keynote speaker Robert Berg, a math teacher, advised the students to be problem solvers and told the audience a funny story about the time he baked Christmas cookies with his sons. “When the problem seems too difficult - that’s the moment that defines you,” he said. “Do what you can, where you are with what you have.” He presented each of the inductees with a cookie cutter as a reminder to be a problem solver.

The ceremony concluded with Cudzilo thanking parents for everything they’ve done to encourage the success of their children, and the new inductees handing their parents personal letters of thanks. Science teacher Scott Meagher also serves as an advisor to the National Junior Honor Society.

The new inductees are: Katherine Annable, Isabella Antonini, Gianna Arbore, Victoria Bisciotti, Ryan Butts, Maverick Clark, Shayna Cliff, Keara Conolly, Haley Corette, William Czebatol, Erika Danzig, Michael Denise, Alexis Distefano, Taylor Eccleston, Nicholas Furioso, Makenna Garbowski, Evan George, Marissa Glitzer, Lauren Goodrich, Nicholas Grasso, Victoria Hagen, Kathryn Hardin, Juliana Helfer, Amanda Hilderbrandt, Alexis Hill, Olivia Hoffman, Amanda Hough, Brenden Howell, Mackenzie Johnson, Nicole Lang, Megan Letta, Kaitlyn Liucci, Emily Marino, Jessica Mattioli, Meaghan McGwin, Ryan McKeeby, Melina Michailidis, Carter Miles, Caitlin Mott, Julianna Murphy, William North, Catherine Pickering, Eli Ransom, Weston Ransom, Makayla Reese, Linzee Reyes, Jason Sapienza, Hannah Sarnov, Meghan Schiano, Brooke Schmitt, Catherine Skinner, Emily Sutton, Taylor Tydings, Grace VerWeire, Cassandra Walters and Caroline West.
