Mission Appeal Every year we get to hear from a missionary from one of our sister (local) churches in another part of the world. This year we will have Bishop Aplinar Senapati from India. He will do mission appeals at all Masses this weekend in our parish. Bishop Aplinar is the first bishop of Rayagda, the newest diocese in India. Pope Francis erected the diocese in May 2016. Diocese of Rayagada is in Odisha, an eastern State near Calcutta. Odisha has the dubious distinction of being the most backward and the poorest State in India. It is also known for the persecutions against Christians. In 2008, the State infamously caught world’s attention because of the worst ever persecution in India, meted out to Christians. The proceeds of the appeal will be used for the Evangelization work in the diocese that is very much in the infancy stage. This includes formation and training of priests, seminarians and catechists and faith formation through popular missions. Your generosity will mean a lot. Please support the evangelization works of the diocese of Rayagada. May God reward your generosity.

"'Just as Christ laid down his life for us, so we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.' My brethren, Lawrence understood this and, understanding, he acted on it. In his life he loved Christ; in his death he followed in his footsteps." - St. Augustine, in a sermon on the feast of Saint Lawrence
Saint Lawrence was martyred on August 10, 258 during the persecution of the emperor Valerian along with many other members of the Roman clergy. He was the last of the seven deacons of Rome to die.
After the pope, Sixtus II, was martyred on August 6, Lawrence became the principal authority of the Roman Church, having been the Church's treasurer. When he was summoned before the executioners he was ordered to bring all the wealth of the Church with him. He showed up with a handful of crippled, poor, and sick men, and when questioned, replied that "These are the true wealth of the Church." He was immediately sent to his death, being cooked alive on a gridiron
He is venerated as one of the patrons of Rome, along with Sts. Peter and Paul.

We seldom hear the readings for the Transfiguration because it is not an obligatory feast. When it falls on a Sunday in Ordinary Time, however, it takes precedence. That is why we are honored with its readings today rather than those for the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Matthew, Mark, and Luke (the Synoptic Gospel writers) all record this event following Jesus’ first Passion prediction. In fact, the details from each account of the Transfiguration are remarkably consistent. One of the more notable features of the Transfiguration is the presence of God’s voice in the narrative. God speaks directly only twice in the storyline of the New Testament Gospels: at Jesus’ baptism and at Jesus’ Transfiguration. Both times, God identifies Jesus as his “beloved Son.” At Jesus’ baptism, God adds “With you I am well pleased.” At the Transfiguration, God then says, “Listen to him.” Within the immediate narrative context of the Transfiguration, this divine command to “listen to him” is seen in Jesus’ command to the disciples not to tell others of his Transfiguration until after he rose from the dead. Within the larger narrative context of Mark’s entire Gospel, the command to “listen to him” is understood as the totality of the Good News of the Kingdom of God that Jesus came to proclaim. The appearance of Elijah and Moses at Jesus’ Transfiguration is another stable element present in all three versions of this story. Many scholars today agree that Moses symbolically represents the Law and Elijah symbolically represents the Prophets. For first-century Jews, the Law and the Prophets embodied the Old Testament. The presence of Moses and Elijah shows Jesus deeply rooted in the sacred Scriptures that shaped his life and his understanding of God and Israel. It calls all of us to enter more intentionally in our own sacred Scriptures heard throughout the season of Lent.

P. Santiago Martin FM
