Ten of the magnificent yachts in the 2012 St Barth Bucket were designed by Ed Dubois, an Englishman whose love for the sea has translated into a top-notch career as a naval architect.

“I have loved boats since I was a kid,” says Dubois, who first attended the Bucket back in 2000with just one of his boats in the race. As the race grew in stature, so did his presence. “The Bucket

is my boat show. I bring potential clients here—some are repeat clients who have becomefriends—and the Bucket gives us a stage on which to act our play.” In 2012, a new class was added

to the Bucket fleet, Les Mademoiselles des Mers, with 11 entries, including the 10 Duboisyachts, allowing them to race against each other.

L’Amour de la voile“À 5 ans, je construisais des modèles que je lançais sur Round Pond à Londres” se rappelle

Ed Dubois, dont la mère et le grand-père ont des attaches à la Royal Navy. Initié à la voileen colonie de vacances, Dubois acquit son premier voilier en bois de 5 mètres à l’âge

de 16 ans ; navire qu’il garde dans un club de voile situé à l’estuaire de la Tamise. “J’ai décidéde devenir concepteur de yachts à 17 ans, fort des certitudes naïves de cet âge-là,” avoue-t-il.

Heureusement pour lui, un cours d’architecture navale adapté à la conception des yachts est offert dans un collège de Southampton, l’épicentre de la voile en Angleterre.

A love of boats“I made model boats at the age of five and sailed them on Round Pond in London’s Kensington Gardens,” Dubois recalls, noting that his grandfather and mother had ties tothe Royal Navy. After learning the ropes at a sailing camp, Dubois got his first 16’ woodensailboat at the age of 16 and kept it at a sailing club in the Thames Estuary. “I decided to become a yacht designer at the age of 17 with all the naïve assumptions of someone that age,” he admits. Luckily for Dubois, there was a three-year college course innaval architecture adapted to yacht design in Southampton, England, the country’s yachting epicenter. He graduated in 1974, worked for Alan Buchanan naval architects inthe Channel Islands, and his career was launched.

Bigger and biggerSince his early days in the industry, the biggest changes in yacht design have been size andmaterials, especially as when Dubois began the biggest sailing yachts were the maxis at 70’to 80’. Illustrating the dramatic shift in size, Dubois is currently designing what should be

the largest sailboat ever built when it is finished in 2016: at 100 meters (330’) in lengthwith a 125-meter mast (410’) comprising 17 tons of carbon fiber, the construction of this

boat will require more than one million man hours. “The challenge is how to build andcontrol the sails on a boat that size,” he explains, clearly intrigued by the challenge.

Hopefully this Dubois yacht will also make it to the Bucket regatta on an island Dubois isvery fond of: “Saint Barth is the only island in the West Indies that has any sophisticated

style,” he says, looking out at the docks where ten of his “babies” were waiting to race. Oneof them, the sleek 44.7-meter Lady B would win its class and place second overall in the

Bucket, putting a Dubois yacht squarely in the winner’s circle.n

Toujours plus grandsDepuis ses débuts, Ed Dubois est le témoin des plus grands changements dans la conception des yachts en termes de dimensions et de matériaux. Au départ, les plus grandsd’entre eux mesuraient entre 21 et 25 mètres (70 à 80 pieds). Pour donner une idée de l’évolution exponentielle des dimensions, il est à noter que Dubois élabore actuellementle voilier qui sera le plus grand jamais construit. Lorsqu’il sera achevé en 2016, ce derniermesurera 100 mètres de long (330 pieds) et sera dôté d’un mât de 125 mètres (410 pieds).Utilisant 17 tonnes de fibre de carbone, le voilier exigera plus d’un million d’heures de travail pour sa construction. “Le défi consiste à savoir à la fois fabriquer puis contrôler les voiles d’un navire d’une telle dimension,” explique Dubois, manifestement exalté par latâche. Espérons que ce nouveau voilier Dubois participera également à la Bucket dans une île que l’achitecte naval affectionne tout particulièrement. “St Barth est la seule îleantillaise « sophistiquée »” dit-il, en lorgnant le quai où dix de ses “bébés” attendent le débutde la course. L’un d’entre eux, Lady B qui s’étire sur 44,7 mètres, gagnera dans sa classe. Arrivé second dans l’ensemble, il placera un voilier Dubois au centre du cercle des vainqueurs de la Bucket. n

Family affair“My father has been in the boat business for

45 years,” says Edmiston, referring to the family business, Edmiston & Company, started by his dad,

Nicholas, and developed into the authority in thesuper yacht industry. Edmiston charters, sells and

manages some of the world's finest yachts over 40m.“We also do project management for new builds,”

he explains, pointing out that his brother Jamie waspart of the firm for over a decade before going into

the bespoke furniture business. Now Woody represents the new generation at Edmiston,

working closely with his father, and internationalcolleagues such as Robert Shepherd in Edmiston's

New York office, to build the business and take it tothe next stage of development.

Future challengesEdmiston is maintaining its trail blazing identity by

being the first in the industry to switch to a digitalyacht directory. “This web-app is a 21st-century

green solution that allows us to update the information on a daily basis,” says Edmiston,who admits that this is a challenging time for theentire industry: “We are always respectful of our

competitors but try to be innovative,” he says, noting the incredible experiences that are possible

on board a super yacht. Bespoke charter experiencessuch as reunions, wellbeing retreats, cuisine by

Michelin-starred chefs, marine exploration as wellas family-oriented vacations with experts on board,

to teach the kids to sail for example. The 2012Bucket was Edmiston's second visit to the island,

but I bet he'll be back again soon as he develops hisjob promoting the Edmiston brand. “I love it here,”

he says about Saint Barth. “It has a European flavor,but is truly Caribbean, isn't it?” Flexing his musclesfor the Bucket, Edmiston looked perfectly at home.He has brought his expertise in the racing world to

the island already and is thinking of a "pop up" Edmiston office for a few months a year. “I could

look after our clients’ interests there,” he says, with a twinkle in those blue eyes.n

Les défis à venirEdmiston & Company reste le leader incontestédans l’univers des yachts grâce notamment à l’introduction du premier registre informatique. “L’application Web est une solution écologique qui nouspermet de réactualiser les données au jour le jour”.Même si pour Woody Edmiston la conjoncture estdifficile dans le milieu industriel, le maître mot restel’innovation: “Nous respectons nos concurrents tout encontinuant à innover” dit-il en tablant sur la variétédes expériences à vivre sur un superyacht tels que les réunions, l’exploration sous-marine et les vacances familiales durant lesquelles les enfantspeuvent apprendre la voile. Notre marin s’est entraîné à St Barth pour la Bucket, aussi à l’aisequ’un poisson dans l’eau. “J’adore cette île,” nousconfie t-il. “L’ambiance est européenne avec une vraiesaveur antillaise, n’est-ce pas? ”. Déjà immergé dans lemilieu des courses de voiliers autour de l’île, il pensey ouvrir une succursale d’Edmiston & Companyquelques mois par an. “Je pourrais vraiment m’occuperdes intérêts de nos clients là-bas” dit-il, les yeux bleusétincelants. n

Launching a new ship The 2012/2013 season brings Zupan to the Caribbean as captain

aboard another small ship, the Tere Moana (formerly Le Levant),which hosts a maximum of 90 guests in 45 staterooms. “All public

spaces including the guest cabins have been refurbished and redesigned,” explains Zupan, describing the Tere Moana, whose

inaugural cruise brought him to Sint Maarten for the first time onan itinerary that also included stops at St Barth, Tortola,

Jost van Dyke, and Virgin Gorda.

Back in the Islands“I am so happy to return to the Caribbean after more than 20 years

and drop anchor in Saint Barth for the first time,” Zupan says. “The first sight of the Moana’s silhouette strikes you with a

distinctive elegance. The ship offers an intimate ambiance aboard afirst-class cruising a yacht with five-star service.” The Moana

specializes in warm-weather destinations with an emphasis on delivering unique voyages and exploring hidden ports.

“After 37 years at sea, I am really happy to call in the port of SaintBarth this winter, and see some really good friends who live there,”

Zupan admits. “They have told me so many stories, and I am looking forward to seeing some of the most beautiful yachts in the

world that reside in Saint Barth and Saint Martin-Sint Maartenduring the season.”n

d'Eilean, de sa création à sa découverte il y a six ans à l’état de ruine par Angelo Bonati, PDG de Panerai, puis son retour triomphal à Antigua

cette année. L' exposition mettait en valeur non seulement le talent prodigieux des artisans qui ont réussi à restaurer la gloire ancienne

d'Eilean, mais aussi la beauté du Fife des années 1930.

Classic racingFifty-six boats raced in the most prestigious gathering of classic sailingyachts in the Caribbean. A star of the regatta was Eilean, a Bermudianketch created in 1936 by Scottish yacht designer William Fife III. A multimedia exhibition at the historical Georgian shipyard, Nelson'sDockyard, presented the history of Eilean, from her inception, to her discovery in ruin six years ago by Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati, to thisyear's triumphant return home to Antigua. The exhibit showcased notonly the staggering talent of the craftsmen who were able to restore Eilean to her original glory, but the beautiful features of the 1930s Fife.

The St. Maarten Marine Park surrounds the entire Dutch sidefrom Oyster Pond to Cupecoy Bay, encompassing some of the lastpristine marine locations on the island. Twenty-eight various divesites include natural and man-made reefs as well a few shipwrecks,such as Proselyte reef, a wonderful example of a historical wreckwith artifacts. In Saint Martin, the Réserve Naturelle plays an important role in the preservation of the underwater world andimportant natural sites on the French side of the island, so that nomatter where you dive you might even find a mermaid along withthe magnificent panorama of underwater flora and fauna.n

Récemment, l’Esmeralda Resort à Orient Bay a investi 2.5 millionsde dollars dans une rénovation au cours de laquelle chacune des 17 villas a été repeinte à l’intérieur comme àl’extérieur de couleurs pastel reposantes. Nous avons installé des stores anticycloniques électriques, ajouté destéléphones, des climatiseurs et des meubles de piscine etde deck neufs et reconstruit tous les patios. Les kitchenettesde toutes les chambres supérieures et de luxe ont été redessinées pour incorporer de nouveaux appareils ménagers et plans de travail. Dans toutes les salles debains les glaces, les lavabos et la robinetterie ont été remplacés et des douches effet pluie installées. La nuit, unéclairage extérieur entièrement refait embellit la propriété.

After a recent $2.5 million renovation, each of our 17 villasat Esmeralda Resort in Orient Bay has been repainted withsoothing, pastel exteriors and interiors. New air-conditioners,electric hurricane shutters, telephones, and pool and deckfurniture have all been added, and all patios have beenrebuilt. The kitchenettes in all superior and deluxe roomshave been redesigned with new countertops and appliances.All bathrooms have new mirrors, sinks and faucets, plus fabulous rain showers installed. All new exterior lightinggives the property a brighter appearance at night.
