List of definitions

References Books, journal or newspaper articles, web pages or any other source of information used in writing an assessment.

Referencing The system used to acknowledge the use of information (words or ideas) from a source.

In-text Within the writing or text of a paper.

Reference List / Bibliography A list of references that have been referred to in-text or in some way utilised in the writing of a paper. Can be used to mean the same thing – or mean slightly different things.

Citation Direct quotation, direct quote or quote – a section of writing taken word for word from a reference and used in a paper (with acknowledgement),

Paraphrase Rephrasing the words or ideas of a reference (with acknowledgement) in a way that the wording is significantly different from the original.

Quote Option 1: Smith (2010, p. 110) argues that “…”. Option 2: “…are the most common, worldwide.” (Smith 2010, p, 111).

Long quote (more than 30 words)

Option 1: Smith (2010, p. 110) states that:

While beetles comprise one of the largest categories of insects, in terms of sheer numbers, ants are the most common, worldwide. To consider this in terms of human population, for every one human, there are around 7000 ants.

Option 2:

While beetles comprise one of the largest categories of insects, in terms of sheer numbers, ants are the most common, worldwide. To consider this in terms of human population, for every one human, there are around 7000 ants (Smith 2010, p. 110).

Paraphrase Option 1: According to Smith (2010), there are… Option 2: …are considered most common (Smith 2010).

Secondary reference (referencing a source cited in another source)

Option 1: A study by Wing, Lee and Chen (1994, p.42, cited in McKechnie 1998, p.11) discusses sleep paralysis in the Chinese population. Option 2: Sleep paralysis has been studied in the Chinese population (Wing, Lee & Chen 1994, p.42, cited in McKechnie 1998, p.11). Option 3: McKechnie (1998, p.11) cites the work of Wing, Lee and Chen (1994, p. 42) which looks at sleep paralysis in the Chinese population.
