Let’s Get to Know…

Rev. Dr. Ernest H. Jones, our new Executive Minister for ABC OH!

Dr. Jones has been a part of our ABC family for several months, but still

only a few of us have had the pleasure to meet him! So, here is an excerpt

from the ABC OH website:

Early in the life of Reverend Dr. Ernest H. Jones, he received the call to

ministry and was licensed to preach at the age of twelve. Since that time

his life has been devoted to the Gospel ministry. Dr. Jones is a graduate of

Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, where he received his Bachelor

of Arts degree in English, and Andover Newton Theological School in

Newton, Massachusetts, where he received a Master of Divinity degree in

1989. In 2013 he received a Doctor of Ministry degree from New York

Theological Seminary in New York, New York.

In October of 1998, Dr. Jones was called to serve as the Pastor of the

Greenwood Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York. Under his pastorate,

the church has experienced increased spiritual vitality as it has repositioned

itself as a community-based congregation for 21st century ministry.

In August 2015, Dr. Jones and his wife, Denise, an educator, celebrated

thirty years of marriage. They have been blessed with two wonderful

children: Candace Alaura, who received her MSW from the University of

Chicago May 2016, and Adam Harrison, a neuroscientist in research at

Boston Children’s Hospital. And now, a new chapter is added to the life of

Dr. Jones and Denise as we welcome them to the American Baptist

Churches of Ohio!

When Dr. Jones’ schedule allows, I hope that he will be able to visit HCC

so that you can all meet this inspiring man of God!

Worship Schedule

for August 2016

August 7

Worship: Communion Sunday Scriptures: Genesis 15:1-6; Psalm 33:12-22; Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16; Luke 12:32-40 Sermon: “Faith: Into the Unknown”

It is true that for many people, ‘faith’ and ‘belief’ are just two words for the same thing. But they are not the same. Faith is about deep-seated confidence. Belief, on the other hand, is more like an opinion. We can believe something to be true without it making much difference to us, but we place our faith only in something if it is vital for the way we live.

Ushers: Joe and Sharon McIntyre Coffee fellowship: Mae Vollmar

August 14

Worship: 13th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Jeremiah 23:23-29; Luke 12:49-56 Hebrews 11:29 - 12:2 Sermon: “Faith: Against the Odds”

We continue our series on faith. Sometimes we want to give up. But the letter to the Hebrews dares to say, “Yes, bad things happen. They have always happened.” Yet, even through these things, God is with us. Always. People persevere against the odds. We can, too.

Ushers: Joe and Sharon McIntyre Coffee fellowship: Herb & Maryellen Futrell

August 28

Worship: 15th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Proverbs 25:6-7; Sirach 10:12-18; Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16; Luke 14:1, 7-14

Sermon: “A Place at the Table” Jesus describes the reign of God as an open table. All people are invited. There is enough for all. In setting an open table, Christ invites all people to experience a life shaped by God’s inclusive and compassionate love. We are each invited, and must decide whether we accept the invitation and what it means for our lives.

August 21

Worship: 14th Sunday after Pentecost Scriptures: Isaiah 58:9b-14; Psalm 103:1-8; Hebrews 12:18-29; Luke 13:10-17 Sermon: “Faith: Breaking the Rules”

In this third of a series, we recognize that Jesus notices people and situations in ways that we most often do not. He sees behind the immediate moment, and draws deeper connections that shift the boundaries of normal behavior, and breaks the rules that keep faith ordered. When Jesus reaches out to release the woman from her oppression, we sense our own release from those things that cripple and confine us.

New Prayer Box!

In the next few weeks, our new Prayer Box will be available along Main Street in front of the church. This project was an idea from the Outreach Team as a way to offer prayer to our community. Anyone and everyone is welcome to drive by and drop in a prayer request. Pastor will collect the papers before worship, and we will intentionally pray for these requests during worship each Sunday. Prayers can be signed or anonymous. Special thanks to the Outreach Team, especially Herb and Maryellen Futrell, for completing this project!

Church Painting Project Soon to be Underway! If you drive by the church in the coming weeks and see

scaffolding, do not be alarmed! Council has

approved to have the church professionally

painted to make sure that our building is

BASEMENT SALE On July 8 & 9, we had a basement garage sale during the Haskins Community Garage Sales. We collected more than we thought and we did well by selling the items for donation only. We made $727.10. This included a bake sale that included cookies, zucchini bread, brownies, and snack mix to sell. We also sold bottled water. The proceeds from this sale will go towards Mission trips. I would like to thank everyone involved: including the people who donated items and bake goods, the people who set up, took down and those who helped work the sale. It takes may hands to do light work and our efforts gained more funds for the trips. Linda Herman Note: Special thanks to Linda for her tireless efforts in organizing and working the church sale!
