HOW TO DE-STRESS THE INTERIOR DESIGN PROCESS

Page 2: Hawaii Renovation Nov 27 2011

Wendy’s guestbathroom wasc o m p l e t e l y

washed out. Completewith dim lighting, lack ofstorage and even a brokentoilet, this bathroom wasready for renovation.

Wendy often has out-of-town visitors, so shewanted to give the room aguest-friendly facelift.

To begin this transfor-mation, I decided on a dra-matic color scheme, usingrich ebony, crisp whiteand splashes of bright red.We treated the walls to afresh coat of clean whitepaint, which flows into thewhite tiles we used in thenew wall-to-wall shower. The bathroom floor wascovered in elegant blacktiles that have just a hint oftexture in them.

To create counter spaceas well as storage forguests, I designed some

custom cabinetry madefrom ebony-stained oak.

A wall-mounted storageunit is located where thebidet once stood. In placeof the pedestal sink, wecreated a functional yetbeautiful vanity. Tall mir-rors flow into a black oakshelf, which in turn meldsinto a marble mosaiccountertop. Open shelv-ing underneath adds evenmore storage space.

But the crowning gloryis definitely the red glassbasin perched majestical-ly on the mosaic counter-top. To save space, I chosea sleek, modern, wall-mounted faucet.

The custom glass-enclosed shower is anoth-er work of art. Guests willlove this spacious shower, which features a mosaic-tiled floor and bench invarying shades of ourblack-and-white theme.

To prevent water damage, the window sill is angleddownward so water willjust flow right off.

We installed water-proof overhead lighting in

the shower, recessedlights in the ceiling,under-cabinet lighting inthe storage unit and twogorgeous sconces mount-ed right through the vani-

ty mirror. This medley oflight is functional yet softand inviting.

Wendy has filled herhome with art, so I wantedto incorporate artwork

into the bathroom. Thehumid atmosphere in abathroom, however, is notkind to paintings. Usingfabrics in our colorscheme, we created a tap-estry instead.

After we added the fin-ishing touches, like redaccent pieces, this bright,ultra-modern bathroomwas ready.

The future of photo-voltaics is integrat-ed solar roofing

installed by UnitedRoofing and manufacturedby Apollo Solar &CertainTeed. Americanmanufacturer CertainTeed(100 years in business) haspartnered with ApolloSolar to offer state of theart technology throughroof-integrated solar shin-gles, and United Roofing istaking the lead in thisproduct installation.

It looks like roofing, it’sdurable like a shingle, butsolar shingles not onlyserve as roofing but alsoprovide renewable energywhile maintaining thebeauty of your home. As afive-star certified shingleinstaller, United Roofingis the roofing contractortaking solar integrated-roofing to the homeown-er. This system is flush-mounted on your roofsheathing and has manybenefits for the home-owner.

Did your solar contrac-

tor answer these ques-tions? There are issuesthat the homeownershould be aware of beforeselecting a photovoltaiccontractor.

Here are just a fewthings to consider:

• How many penetra-tions will be made in myroof? Typical photovoltaicsystems will have a dozenlag bolts as well as a mainpenetration for the electri-cal conduits (into yourattic). This will createmultiple potential leaks inthe future. Solar roofinghas a single penetration inyour roof with a customvent cover for this appli-cation.

• Who will service myroof if it leaks? We willprovide you with a seven-year workmanship war-ranty. As roofing contrac-tors, we have much moreexperience working onroofs. Many solar contrac-tors don’t have the expert-ise to work on all of the

various types of roofing.

• Do you sub-contractout your installation? Many solar contractors donot have installationcrews. They sub-contractout the work, so you don’treally know who is work-ing on your roof.

• What are my after-installation costs? Manyhomeowners do not real-ize that if you ever need toreroof, it will cost youover $100 (per panel) toremove and reinstall thephotovoltaic panels.

• How will my rooflook? The finished roofwill be much more attrac-tive as the solar panels areflush-mounted and inte-grated directly to yourroof sheathing. This willresult in a sleek and seam-less look eliminating theneed for racks andmounts.

Here are a few keyissues which make solarroofing a viable option for

your home:

• Quality and Durability:The solar roofing producthas a Class A fire rating, a

110 mph wind warranty, isdurable and resistant towind uplift and is UL1703approved. This integratedsystem has a self-sealingmembrane as well as acomplete flashing systemto ensure a watertightroof. Individual shinglescan be repaired orreplaced without having toremove the solar shingles.Although not recommend-ed for safety reasons, thesepanels are walkable! Thiswill minimize chances ofdamage if you ever ter-mite-tent your home.

• Tax Credits: TheCertainTeed Apollo SolarRoofing system qualifiesfor both the state and fed-eral tax credits.

• Cost: When youreroof, you will not haveto remove the solar shin-gles. This system can beinstalled into an existingshingle roof, thus elimi-nating the need to prema-turely reroof a home toinstall a photovoltaic sys-tem. The solar roof systemis competitively pricedwith current photovoltaicsystems, and we are cur-rently offering specialintroductory pricing until

the middle of 2012.

• Peace of Mind: Onecontractor, one phone call.At United Roofing we willnot only be able to offeryou a five- star 20-yearworkmanship warrantyfor your roof, but you canhave peace of mindknowing that your entireroof is backed by onecontractor.

We’re not just a solarroofing contractor. UnitedRoofing is a full-serviceroofing contractor whohas expertise in all typesof roofing. We will pro-vide you with a free esti-mate and can discuss ener-gy star (heat reflective)products such as Platinumshingles, elastomeric coat-ing systems and metalroofing systems. We haveexperienced installerswho can install any type ofroofing style that youdesire. We will consideryour needs and goals first, while providing you withthe best value for yourhard-earned dollar.

For a free estimate, callUnited Roofing at 428-7947. We would be glad tomeet with you to discussyour roofing project.

EnergyPro Hawaiiand its sister com-pany, Waialae

Plumbing, have installedmany solar hot water sys-tems throughout its 17-year history. EnergyProHawaii also has installedmany solar photovoltaicsystems and is rapidlyclosing in on its 100th PVinstallation. System No.100 should be installedright around the end ofthis year. The purchaserof system No. 100 willreceive a pleasant sur-prise bonus!

Solar PV systems areconstantly evolving, be-coming more efficient andless expensive, much like

computers have beendoing for years. After taxcredits are factored in,most people can pay fortheir systems in less thanfive years. Most PV panelsare warranted to produceelectricity at 80 percent oftheir original minimumrating after 20-25 years, sothey will produce freeelectricity for a long peri-od of time. They alsoreduce our dependence onfossil fuels.

Many newer PV sys-tems use individualinverters for each solarpanel, known as microin-verters. This allows eachpanel to immediatelyconvert the DC power it

produces to the ACpower that your houseruns on. This improvesefficiency and safety, since the microinvertersimmediately shut off anypower supply in theevent of a power failure, interruption or a short ofany kind.

New modules that con-sist of a PV panel with anintegral microinverter-are are just beingreleased, giving the panelan AC rating. These newpanels will install fasterand simplify any poten-tial warranty issues. They also are more pow-erful than many of therated products on the

market today.With the constant evo-

lution of solar productsand the different require-ments of each individualhomeowner’s needs, it’simportant to pick anexperienced company toinstall your solar system, whether it’s a hot watersystem, PV system oreven a solar attic fan tocool your house.EnergyPro Hawaii has allof the proper licensesand the skilled employ-ees to handle all aspectsof an installation in-house.

The largest Americangeneration is eitherretired or quickly

nearing retirement age.Baby boomers, the genera-tion born between 1946and 1964 and who numbermore than 76 million, maybe getting older, but theydefinitely are not ready tohead to the retirementhome!

The boomer generationis more active than gener-ations past, has a moresophisticated style andwants options in theirhomes. Whether they areselling the homes wherethey raised their childrenand heading to sunnier

pastures or staying put andredesigning to accommo-date their retired lifestyle, boomers are making animpact on new housingtrends. Some features thathome builders and remod-elers are seeing as theybegin to cater to theboomers include:

• Home Offices: Someboomers are choosing towork past the age of 65. Asthey transition from a tradi-tional 9-to-5 job, however, they want home offices forflexibility. A second careeror part-time employmentoften eliminate the hassle ofcommuting while keepingthem active and bringing insupplementary income.

• Tech / Media Centers:The tech-savvy boomergeneration wants top-of-the-line amenities for theirhomes such as a mediaroom with surround soundand central control systems, which manage all mediasources in one location. Thehouse may include a wire-less home network (Wi-Fi),remote control lighting andsecurity features.

• Wider Doors andHallways: As a person ages,

there is a likelihood thatuse of a wheelchair mightbecome a necessity.Designing a home that islivable now but can transi-tion and be functional asthe occupant ages isimportant to ensure thatthe home will be a goodlong-term investment.Wider doors and hallwaysare useful for moving larg-er furniture today, and willalso be wheelchair-accessi-ble tomorrow.

If your walls are startingto look dingy or show-ing scuff marks, or if

the exterior is starting tocrack and peel, considerscheduling a professionalpaint job before the holi-days are in full swing.

There’s still time tocomplete an interior orexterior painting projectbefore Christmas, Ha-nukkah or New Year’s, ifyou get on Island BudgetPainting’s job list in thenext few weeks, notescompany president TedWexler.

“Many of us will beentertaining family andfriends during the holi-days,” Wexler said, “and, naturally, we want ourhome to look its best. Our painting contractorsare the best in the busi-ness and are capable ofworking in a home care-fully and unobtrusivelywhile the occupants are

busy with their ownactivities such as cookingand gift wrapping.

“As for exterior work, any house showing wearand tear in the form ofcracking or peeling paintis ready for a ‘new wintercoat’ to protect the woodfrom further moistureinfiltration, which even-tually leads to rot. Thenthe only alternative is toreplace the wood, andthat gets expensive.Maybe it’s time toenhance the home’s ‘curbappeal’ with new trim aswell.

“It’s never a good ideato wait until the lastminute to schedule a jobif you want the best serv-ice and highest qualityworkmanship. However,if someone calls us at thelast minute, we do ourbest to meet their needs. And we can usually find away to fit them in since

we have a large crew ...and we do not escalateprices just because we’rebusy. But it works betterfor everyone if we canplan ahead and spendsome time with the clientinspecting the home andchoosing colors.”

Wexler is a specialistin color selection andcan assist clients in mak-ing choices and match-ing existing colors orfurnishings, as well asadvise on the best prod-ucts for the job, takinginto account such fac-tors as weather condi-tions in the area. Hiscrew is experienced inworking with difficultjobsites requiring scaf-

folding and operatingwithin the parameters setby condominiums affect-ing access, parking andtimes that work can beperformed.

In some cases, prelimi-nary inspections mayuncover termite damageor rot, which IslandBudget Painting has thecapability to repair, sincethe company crewincludes skilled carpen-ters. If the job is an interi-or wall paper removal ordry wall, work may alsobe involved and can alsobe handled “in house.”

Wexler, a licensed, bonded contractor whohas been in the businessfor more than 30 years, noted that a painter whoshows up at a job site forthe first time and imme-

diately begins paintingmay not be the bestchoice. He has had con-siderable experienceover the years withstructures that were notproperly prepped by theprevious painter, withpeeling and cracking asthe result.

“Once I meet the clientat the job site, whether aresidential or commer-cial project, I evaluatethe condition of the sur-faces and provide a pro-posal that may only coverpainting, if that’s allthat’s needed … however,I will also note the cost ofprep work to restore theintegrity of the wood or

masonry. A good paint jobnot only lasts, it also pro-tects and prolongs the lifeof the building.”

Among the clients ofIsland Budget Paintingare some of Hawaii’s lead-ing architects, condomini-um management compa-nies, owners’ associa-tions, and Realtors assist-ing a seller in upgrading aproperty they plan toplace on the market. He isalso experienced inrepainting historic resi-dences.

Boomers very activein new housing trends

• Better Lighting / BiggerWindows: To accommo-date the need for morelighting as we get older, builders are adding morewindows and making themlarger to let in more naturallight. They also are addingmore light fixtures undercabinets and in stairwells.Multiple switches toreduce the number of tripsand dimmer controls toeliminate glare are otheroptions.

• First-Floor Bedroomsand Bathrooms: More than40 percent of new homeshave master suites down-stairs, a 15 percent increasefrom more than a decadeago. Boomers not wishingto go up and down stairswith bad knees and achingbacks have helped fuel thistrend. The bedrooms arealso bigger, with largerwalk-in closets and bath-rooms that have a separatetub, shower and dual sinks.

• Easy to MaintainExteriors / Landscaping:Yard work, painting andother landscaping choresmay no longer be enjoy-able to aging homeowners.People who move to a new

home when they retiremay opt for a mainte-nance-free community. Those who choose to stayin their homes might makeimprovements to exteriorsurfaces such as installingstucco, brick or low-main-tenance siding. Lawns arebeing replaced with livingpatios, decorative land-scaping or flower beds.

• Flex Space: “Flex space”has become more prevalentin both new homes andremodeling. Flex spaces arerooms that take on the pur-pose of the present homeowner’s needs but canadjust with changes as theyoccur. This allows home-owners to stay in theirhomes longer as it contin-ues to serve their needsthroughout life’s stages.

Recent events in thephotovoltaic indus-try regarding the

financial conditions ofmost manufacturersshould cause concernamong consumers. Thecost per watt has beenfalling over the last sixmonths and now its effecthas started to be realized. What has been good forthe customer has not beengood for manufacturers assales have decreased andprofitability has evaporat-ed for almost everyone.Anyone who has been aninvestor in the stock ofsolar companies can attestto the collapse of thevalue of his or her invest-ment.

Pacific Islands Con-struction believes thatconsumers should bemade aware of how thesedevelopments may affectthem and what theyshould consider prior topurchasing their PV sys-tem. Just this past week, the CEO of Trina, one ofthe world’s largest solarmodule manufacturers, predicted that only aboutfive companies in the pho-tovoltaic module manu-facturing business maystill be around in 2020.

Manufacturers have

slashed sales forecasts andU.S. companies likeSunpower and First Solarhave said they will reor-ganize. Mergers havestarted to increase andbanks have become leeryof making loans to manyof the solar companiesbecause of their highlyleveraged positions orfuture profitability.

Why has this happenedand what does it mean? AsChina has ramped up itsproduction capacity inrecent years, the latestworld events caused manysubsidies to disappear.Spot price for solar mod-ules dropped by morethan 40 percent and allprofitability went with it.As consumers havereaped the benefits, solarmanufacturers have react-ed in the following ways:

At first they droppedprices, then they looked tocut costs, and finally manyhave started to make cutson the quality of the prod-

uct they are producing. The cutting of quality

by using inferior compo-nents may be the only waymany companies feel theycan stay in business.Smart large-scale buyersare now seeking out sup-pliers who they feel willnot sacrifice quality andwill stay in business. Thelargest six suppliers noware receiving more than50 percent of the businessand this means the othercouple hundred manufac-turers are getting the rest.

The recipe for bank-ruptcy, mergers and con-solidation have rapidlycome into being. Name-brand manufacturers willdecide to get out of thisbusiness and focus ontheir traditional business. The sad thing about this isthat many consumershave bought their PV sys-tem based on their famil-iarity with these name-brands.

The future of solar isbright, but the industryhas a bumpy road goingforward and the value ofwarranties comes intoquestion. Predicting howthings will go forward is aguess, but purchasingquality equipment withthe proper installation will

help alleviate problemsdown the road. Trust inthe company one choosesto do business with cannotbe based solely on price ifa careful analysis of theproducts is not performedas current conditions dic-tate.

Pacific IslandsConstruction has careful-ly selected its PV part-ners from only the bestquality manufacturers, whose financial strengthhas not been impacted bycurrent market condi-tions. We continue tobelieve that what is best

for our customers is whatis best for us. We willcontinue to be vigilant inorder to provide the bestquality from manufactur-ers whom we believe will

be in business tomorrow. To learn more about

Making your homea safe haven foryour family

should be a top priority.Luckily, updating yourhome safety doesn’t haveto be a daunting task withthese steps:

• Bathrooms: To start, locate medicines and dan-gerous chemicals andplace them together in alocked cabinet. Next, setyour hot water heaterbelow 120 degrees andinstall grab bars to helpprevent falls.

• Kitchen: Ensure haz-ardous items like knives, scissors, cleaning sup-plies, plastic bags andcords are out of reach. Also, keep a fire extin-guisher within arm’sreach of your oven for anycooking accidents.

• Stairs: To preventfalls, ensure there isbright lighting near stairsand remove or securetripping hazards, such asthrow rugs, from the area.Be sure working smokedetectors are in the hall-ways on each floor andchange their batteriesevery six months. Finally, provide secure railingson both sides of thestairs.

• Electrical / Heating:To start, place safety plugs

in all electrical outlets.Next, create barriersaround any hot surfaces, such as baseboards, radia-tors and fireplaces. Finally, be sure that allelectrical outlets nearwater sources featureground fault circuits toprevent electrocution.

• Bedrooms: If you’re inan older home, be surethat the walls have a safe,non-lead paint. Next, lookfor any dangling cordsfrom blinds and pin themup. Window guards alsoare available to preventaccidental falls from openwindows.

• Family Room: Placelarge equipment on a walland make the wires /cords inaccessible. Secureany shelves or bookcasesto the wall to avoid tip-ping hazards. Also, if youhave toddlers, be sure toadd corner pads to anyfurniture with sharp cor-ners.

Happy Holidays!LET’S TALK FLOORING

with Shirley Pai Hilton, Pres. & CEO, PII

Aloha, Shirley.

Decorating your living space issupposed to be fun. If highprices, high-pressure sales tac-

tics and clueless consultants have youstressing over your design decisions,it may be time to simplify the process.

Here are a handful of commondesign decision headaches and a fewideas for curing them:

Too many optionsBefore you confront a dizzying

array of options in a big box store ora design showroom, narrow yourchoices by deciding what style youlike. Settling on an overall style thatwill be carried throughout yourdesign can help you eliminate designoptions right off the bat.

High-pressure sales tacticsBuying design elements at a spe-

cialty store has advantages and dis-advantages. On one hand, you’re

more likely to find a knowledgeablesalesperson. On the other, you mayface high-pressure sales tactics.Shopping online at specialty siteslike Blinds.com is a great solution.

You can find plenty of advice andhigh-quality options, minus the pres-sure of dealing face-to-face with apushy salesperson in your home.

Clueless customer serviceClueless customer service is anoth-

er major design decision stress-causer. Sometimes you need guidanceand to talk to someone who knowsenough about what you’re buying tobe able to interpret your descriptionof what you’re looking for when youdon’t really know what it’s called.

Your chances of finding that levelof expertise are much better with aspecialty store or online seller.

High prices and questionablequality

Comparison shopping is the bestway to avoid overpaying or pur-chasing poor quality goods. And theInternet is the easiest way to com-parison shop. You can Google whatyou’re shopping for, or try pricecomparison websites like PriceGrabber.com or Nextag.com.

Taking the stress out of designdecisions doesn’t have to be difficult.Refining your choices and usingonline resources can renew yourenjoyment of the design process.

NEW CABINET STYLES IN STOCK!

An important part ofany kitchen or bathremodel is taking

measurements and draw-ing a visual map.Measuring the existingcabinets will give yousizes for replacement cab-inets.

WallsThe first step is to meas-

ure the walls of where thenew cabinets will beplaced. The best way tomeasure a wall is from onecorner to the opposite

end. It is always helpful tohave someone else holdone end of the measuringtape when measuringlarge areas.

Next, measure the ceil-ing height, starting fromthe floor. Measuring theceiling height will deter-mine the general height ofthe wall cabinets for prop-er counter space.

Sometimes there arespaces that will make tak-ing accurate measure-ments difficult. In thesesituations, it is better toround down to the near-est inch rather than roundup. Cabinets for a kitchendesign with measure-ments rounded down willbe sure to fit; the extraspace can always be hid-den with a filler piece.Whereas when roundedup, a whole cabinet mayhave to be changed to asmaller size to fit.

Openings and obstaclesIt is important to jot

down all openings orobstacles, such as win-dows, doorways or ceil-ing beams. Measure theplacement of the obstaclefrom one end of the walland the sizes (width andheight) of the obstacle.

AppliancesPlan on keeping the

existing appliances? Takemeasurements of theirsizes to ensure the cabi-net design will allowspace for them to fit.Similarly, when gettingnew appliances alongwith new cabinets, take

note of the new sizes. With existing or replac-

ing appliances, measuretheir placement from oneend of the wall to one sideof the existing appliance. If the plan is to relocateappliances to a differentarea, however, make anote of where.

Sink(s) and PlumbingFixtures

Measuring from the cen-ter of the sink to one wallwill give a reasonablyaccurate idea of the exist-ing plumbing and what

cabinet sizes may work. Also, take the measure-ments of the existing sinkor new sink so the sinkcabinet will be able to fit.Although plumbing canalways be moved, usingthe existing setup is mostcost-effective.

With more than 20years of experi-ence in Hawaii’s

roofing and solar industry,Surface Shield Roofing’sShon Gregory has seen thebusiness change as materi-als and technologies areadapted to the needs andpriorities of propertyowners.

“Our clients are becom-ing increasingly con-cerned with rising energycosts,” Gregory said.“Traditional technologiesand materials are still inuse, but we’re finding thatmore and more people arelooking to advancementsin roofing to help defraytheir costs.”

Because of our state’sdependence on importedoil, energy costs in Hawaiiare the highest in the U.S.,and the need to reduce theprice of cooling a home orbusiness has led to innova-tions.

“The market demandsthat we work with the lat-est materials and tech-nologies,” said Gregory,“because our clients wantto save on their energycosts over the long term.”

“Cool roofing” is anapproach that has a vari-ety of cost and environ-mental benefits, and thenumber of home and busi-ness owners adopting thatapproach is growing rap-idly. Because such coat-ings are applied to existingroofing substrate, demoli-tion that sends waste to alandfill is unnecessary.Buildings using cool roofmaterials and technolo-gies can save up to 25 per-cent on energy costs.

Roof coatings are seam-less, and when installedcorrectly, can solve roofleaks on almost any typeof roof substrate. Field-applied reflective roofcoatings can extend the

useful life of nearlyevery roof  substrate, keep-ing a roof surface cool andproviding a level of pro-tection from the sun andweather. Roof coatingscan add 25-plus years  tothe service life of a roofand reduce the amount ofdiscarded roofing materi-als that end up in landfills.

“Large commercialproperties were the firstto embrace cool roofingtechnologies because ofthe size of their buildings,”explained Gregory. “But inthe past years, we’ve seena major spike in the num-ber of residential propertyowners opting to go withroof coating technologiespreviously used mostly bythe commercial sector.”

Surface Shield uses avariety of roof coatingproducts. Here are a fewbenefits of one of the high-ly efficient coatings useddaily by the team:

• 95 percent solid Siliconecontains no VOCs (VolatileOrganic Compounds) thatwill evaporate into the air.

• Silicone coatings arethe only non-sacrificialcoatings available. Othercoating systems willdegrade with UV rays from

the sun. Silicone does notdegrade through exposureto UV rays.

• Silicone coatings arecapable of withstandingpermanent ponding waterwith no effect on the prod-uct. Because of this, sili-cone coatings can be usedto waterproof water foun-tains and man-made ponds.Ponding water will breakdown other coatings, mak-ing these soft and greatlyreducing their life span.

• Silicone coatings willnot support mold ormildew growth, nor willthey blacken because ofmold or mildew.

• Silicone coatings arefast-drying. In tropical cli-mates, silicone is dryenough to walk on in twohours. This means multiplecoats can be applied in thesame day. Work is com-pleted sooner than withother coatings.

• Silicone will not washout. Rain, even a minuteafter application, will notcompromise silicone.

If you’re looking for aholiday gift the wholefamily will appreci-

ate, how about a new airconditioning system toprovide your home withclean, cool air andwarmth as well duringthe cool winter months?A new ductless split sys-tem is a gift that keeps ongiving.

“Now is the best timeto buy a new air condi-tioning system to ensurethat it will be in place bythe holidays,” said AireConditioner Shoppeowner Neil Wiedemann.

“This is also a goodtime to schedule servicingfor your existing ductlesssplit system so it will beoperating with max-imumefficiency when enter-taining guests.”

The latest ductlesssplit systems providezoned comfort and areengineered to installquickly and easily. Theserevolutionary new sys-tems available from theAire ConditionerShoppe, which special-izes in Fujitsu andMitsubishi, provide bothheating and cooling witha push of a button on theremote control. Theyalso provide individualtemperature controlthroughout your home orbusiness so each room, zone, or floor will be thetemperature you set.

Concerned about airquality?

These systems havethe capability to filterout dust, mold sporesand microorganisms. The Dry Mode helps tocontrol humidity levels, even when cooling isn’tneeded. Other standardfeatures include SleepTimer Auto Changeover,24-Hour Timer Cold

Prevention, Auto Restart/ Reset Low Ambient,and Auto Louver-Up /Down, Left / Right.

Concerned aboutappearance?

The cooling-only wall-mounted units, designedfor single rooms, areslim and stylish. Indoorunits have a clean, aes-thetic design and arepowerful, though smalland shorter in lengththan competing units. They can blend into anyroom and are ideal forareas with space limita-tions. The variable speedcompressor helps sys-tems adapt to shifts inheat load caused by

afternoon sun.

Concerned aboutnoise?

If sound coming fromyour current systeminterferes with listeningto music, TV, conversa-tion or even fallingasleep, it’s time to try anew ductless split sys-tem. These new air con-ditioning units are soquiet you won’t evenknow they’re on.

How about cost? “A new efficient duct-

less split system cankeep you comfortable inyour home for pennies aday ... and the higher theSEER (Seasonal Energy

Efficient Ratio), the moreyou save on electric,”Wiedemann said.

“The operative word is‘efficient’ — old or mal-functioning air condi-tioning systems are ener-gy hogs that don’t do thejob effectively and runup your electricity bills.”He pointed out that splitductless systems can bejust as efficient as centralair conditioning, or moreefficient in terms ofenergy savings, depend-ing on the lifestyle of thehomeowner.

Wiedemann, who hasbeen in the air condition-ing business since 1979,sells and installs split

ductless systems onOahu, as well as portableair conditioners. He alsosells the less expensivewindow units that areoften the choice forapartments, condos andhouses.

“Even the window airconditioning units havebeen extensivelyimproved both in effi-ciency and appearance. However, the tenant and/ or owner needs toobtain permission fromthe management compa-ny and / or apartmentowners association toinstall any type of airconditioning,” he added.

Both ductless splitsystems and window airconditioners are on dis-play at the AireConditioner Shoppeshowroom in Waipioand also shown anddescribed on the web-site, www.airecondition-ershoppe.com. The com-pany installs, repairs, and services what theysell. For 10 years run-ning Fujitsu has namedWiedemann “Dealer ofthe Year.”

The company offersfree on-site estimatesand design consultation.

“When our estimatorreviews your needs andyou make a decision onthe system you want toinstall, you will have aquote the next day byphone or fax. If the cus-tomer is satisfied, wedraw up the contract.Once I set a price, it’sfirm and it will be guar-anteed the lowest avail-able price with the sameequipment,” Wiedemannsaid.
