Black is both timelessand elegant. Every-body loves a little

black dress or a sleek blacksports car. But when itcomes to decorating, blackis one of the most fearedcolors in the spectrum.

Many people think blackwill make a space too dark, but good designers knowthat, if used properly, blackis a powerful tool. I demon-strated this during a recentdesign project for myclients, Joanne and John.

They live in an eleganthouse that was lovinglyrenovated over time by herfather. Sadly, he passedaway before he got to workon his dream project: thedreary family room in thebasement. So, I decided topick up where he left off.

The room was reallyshabby, with wood-pan-eled walls, an outmodedfireplace and uncomfort-able seating. However, therest of the house had alovely, traditional feelingwith a neutral palette and afew black accents. I choseto bring this design schemeinto the basement, butcrank up the black to addmuch-needed sophistica-tion.

There was some struc-tural work to attend to first.A new ceiling was installed, the room was rewired anda mysterious door that did-n’t open was replaced witha wall of windows.

I then painted thewooden walls a tranquilcream (after dealing withlots of primer, that is), put

up some 36-inch-high whitewainscoting and put downa plank-style, brown corkfloor.

I now had a soft, neutralroom. Yet, with a neutralscheme the eye wanderswith no place to land.Black accents help focusthe eye, but you have touse them wisely — bypunctuating, not over-powering. The rightamount of black will addexcitement and enhance

the other tones in a room.I created an L-shaped

seating area along two ad-joining walls, brought intwo beige chenille-coveredsofas and added black andblack-accented pillows. These sofas share a charcoalottoman, a round side tableand an area rug with a blackand neutral pattern thatspeaks to the new black-and-gold floral drapes.

Along one of the walls, Icreated a fireside lounge. The room had an old stonefireplace that was a bit ofan eyesore, so I built up themantle, painted it whiteand refitted it with a gas in-sert. To one side, I put intwo very cool designerchairs that are called“smoke chairs” and added ahuge wall mirror and ablack side table.

No matter where you sitthere is a good view of anew 54-inch television, which I put against the finalwall. The television sitsatop a long wooden con-sole and is flanked byblack-and-white framedphotographs.

When designing withblack, lighting is especiallyimportant. So, in additionto recessed lights, I in-stalled a crystal drop pen-dant outlined in black, twofireplace sconces, a bronzetable lamp and a photogra-pher’s tripod lamp.

I also added some acces-sories: baskets, bowls, vases, artwork and framedphotographs — includingone of Joanne’s dad, themaster renovator.

One way to elevate goodstyle to great style is to em-brace a bit of drama. Andthat’s exactly what I did inJoanne and John’s space. Bysetting up a neutral canvasand then strategicallyadding dabs and dashes ofblack, I created a comfort-able family room that hasjust the perfect stroke of so-phistication.

We are fortunate tohave tradewinds90 percent of the

time here in Hawaii. AndTradewind windows byRMA Sales are designed tocapture these abundanttradewinds that cool our Is-lands naturally.

The Tradewind windowis built right here on Oahuat the company’s facility inHalawa Business Park.

With custom made-to-order windows manufac-tured locally, you receiveyour windows faster thanfrom the Mainland andwith less risk of damage.Window parts, compo-nents and accessories alsoare available at RMASales. But most impor-tantly, the company offerslocal and dependable cus-tomer service for your

Tradewind windows.Tradewind louver

jalousie windows are avail-able in aluminum or vinylsurround frames to deliverstyle and functionality toisland homes. Vinyl sur-round frames can be madewith either inside or out-side screen features, andcontinue to be the frame ofchoice among homeown-ers. The inside screen fea-ture makes screen removal

easy for cleaning and is es-pecially convenient formulti-level homes. Win-dow corners are fusion-welded and create onepiece of durable, scratch-resistant vinyl. Thisgreatly reduces the risk ofleaks at the corner joints.Vinyl requires minimummaintenance — occasionalwashing with dishwashingsoap to remove dirt/saltbuildup and clean out thedrainage weep holes onthe surround frame. With avinyl frame there is noneed to paint or worryabout wood rot, rust orcorrosion, too. The vinyl

surround frame is avail-able in two colors: whiteand almond. An optionavailable is a 2-inch deco-rative vinyl exterior trimoption to accentuate thewindow profile.

The aluminum sur-round frame provides arigid, durable, sleek profilewith mechanically fas-tened corners. Aluminumalso requires minimummaintenance with the oc-casional dusting andwashing to remove dirtand salt buildup from theframe. No need to worryabout wood rot or rust. The Tradewind aluminumsurround frame is avail-able in three colors:bronze, satin anodized andwhite painted finish.

The Tradewind louverjalousie window hardwareis made of corrosion-resist-ant components that arehoused in aluminum orvinyl channels.

Though the demand for4-inch blades still rules, the6-inch louver blades aregaining popularity inHawaii as it offers a differ-ent window profile for thehome. Jalousie blade op-tions include: clear, opaque,

gray, bronze tint, low-eglass, as well as redwood, aluminum and PVC.

Unlike sliding, singlehung and casement win-dows, Tradewind louverwindows enable maximumairflow through windowopenings. A major advan-tage of louver jalousie win-dows over other windowsystems is the ability to reg-ulate airflow through win-dow openings even when itrains. You can’t do this witha sliding or single hungwindow.

Have any corroded,frozen-shut, non-func-tional windows in your

home that is now just afixed pane of glass? Re-place them with theTradewind EazyFit/Retrofit vinyl frame in ei-ther jalousie louver, slid-ing, or single hung

configuration. These cus-tom-made vinyl windowsare fabricated to fit intoyour existing windowframes. No need to com-promise the integrity ofthe exterior walls by tear-ing out your old corrodedwindow frames. Best ofall, this will save you cash. The EazyFit/ Retrofit vinylwindows are available inwhite or almond and fabri-cated right here on Oahufor fast delivery.

A perfect complement tothe Tradewind window isits new and exciting line,Crimsafe security screens. These patented stainless

steel screens are 24/7 secu-rity screens, hurricane pro-tection and energy-savingall in one. Crimsafe secu-rity doors and windowscan’t be kicked in, cutthrough or pried open. It isalso a hurricane shutterwith Miami Dade CountyNOA’s and Florida BuildingCodes product approvals. And lastly, Crimsafescreens can improve thewindow’s ability to blocksolar radiation by up to 52percent. Crimsafe will bemanufactured locally andavailable in early spring.Seeing (and feeling it) is be-lieving. Check out Crim-safe security screens atRMA’s showroom at 134Waiua Way.

RMA Sales is a locallyowned and operated com-pany that has been provid-ing quality windowsystems and building prod-ucts to the home improve-ment industry throughoutHawaii since 1961.

Open floor plans, energy-ef-ficient features, and lots ofcloset space are among the

elements that today’s home buy-ers are seeking in newly con-structed homes, according toindustry experts at the 2011 Inter-national Builders’ Show. The re-search and trends presented at theshow offer valuable insights andinformation to home builders sothat they can build homes that ap-peal to the modern consumer’spreferences.

Once-popular features such aslarge living rooms, soaking tubsand second-floor laundry roomsare now out of favor. Home buy-ers found that the convenience ofnot having to carry laundry to an-other floor was outweighed bythe noise that interrupted theirsleep.

Home buyers are looking forsmall details in their new homes, such as a built-in desk under astairway, or a courtyard tuckedbetween two downstairs bed-rooms. Successful home builders

“create mem-ory points,”said designtrends seminarspeaker KateBrennan of theChicago de-sign firm MaryCook and As-sociates.

According tothe U.S. CensusBureau, the av-erage size of anew singlefamily homedecreased from

2,438 square feet to 2,377 in 2010.This made designing to maximizespace a popular theme at theshow. One session focused exclu-sively on new ideas in home de-sign for floor plans measuring2,500 square feet or less.

Open floor plans are now inhigh demand because they are notonly more practical for entertain-ing — the hosts can interact withtheir dinner guests in a spaciouskitchen while they are preparingfood — but the lack of walls andclosed-off spaces make the home

seem much larger.More than ever, the kitchen is

now the hub of the home. Even ifbusy families are bringing hometakeout, they want the kitchen is-land to be large enough to serve amulti-tasking purpose as a placeto do homework, crafts, and paybills — as well as to enjoy coffeeon a Sunday morning.

Natural finishes are also morepopular. Recycled flooring, usinga mix of wood grains on the cabi-

nets and architectural details thatreflect the indigenous building ofthe region — such as using stuccoin the Southwest — are more im-portant to buyers.

All the popular roof-ing systems haveearned their spot

in the marketplacethrough the test of time.Yet, some may not beright for you.

Maybe it’s beauty youdesire. “I just don’t wantto look like every otherhouse on the block!”

Or longevity. “I onlywant to reroof once more, and that’s it!”

Or budget. “I’m movingin three years and I justneed a guaranteed repair.”

Each of these valid re-actions may lead you to adifferent roof. Here’sLeakmaster Roofing’sopinion, based on our 20years of working witheach major system.

Compositionn shinglePros: Wide range of

pricing, proven work-horse, long manufactur-ers’ warranties, mostpopular sloped roof, pe-riod.

Cons: Hot in the sum-mer, looks like everyother home in the neigh-borhood, can mildew.

Leakmaster’s advice:Ask for five nails pershingle, which protectsagainst blowoffs. Installroof vents to cool shin-gles down. Get mildew-resistant shingles.

Rooff coatingsPros: Lower price,

lower interior temps, seamless, no need for rooftear off, can be easilymaintained, no need toreroof.

Cons: Must be recoatedevery 10 to 15 years, pond-

ing water can harm somecoatings, bright white canbe glaring.

Leakmaster’s advice:Ask for a “Full Fabric Re-inforced” system on flatroofs. For ponding water, specify a coating contain-ing Lipacryl, or Silicone. On sloped roofs, you maywant a light tint to cutglare.

Metall roofsPros: Longevity of new

standing seam roofs is ex-cellent. Older styles canbe maintained indefi-nitely with protectivecoatings.

Cons: Higher price, noisy in the rain, needsrod vents in sunny areas.

Leakmaster’s advice:Standing seam looks greatand can last a very longtime with its Kynar coat-

ing. Holds its value.

Woodd shakePros: Nostalgic old

Hawaii look, wood is goodinsulator, quiet in rain.

Cons: Pricey, needsregular maintenance, canmildew quickly.

Leakmaster’s advice:Use stainless fasteners,get factory-treated wood,

shake quality can vary, sobe careful.

Leakmaster Roofing in-stalls and repairs all ofthese roofs, and more.Register for the com-pany’s $20 Roof Mainte-nance Special (normally$185) at Leakmaster.com.

Going glam and beinggreen don ‘t need tobe mutually exclu-

sive, especially when itcomes to decorating yourhome. Makers of furnitureand home decor items havestarted incorporating envi-ronmentally friendly prac-tices and materials intotheir products, allowing

consumers to have greenerhouseholds without com-promising their personalstyle.

It’s possible to incorpo-rate greener choices in al-most all home decorprojects. Because so manycompanies are recognizingthat their customers wanteco-friendly products, it’s

possible to find green prod-ucts at all price ranges. Eventhe highest-end design firmsnow source items likecouches made from sustain-able wood and organic fab-rics — but you can also findthem at retail stores.

Home accessories are aquick and easy place tostart if you’re just looking

to add some small re-vitalizing touches toyour rooms. Pillowsmade from antiquelinen grain sacks thatwere once commonin Europe add rustic-chic texture withoutbeing uncomfort-able. To add a pop ofcolor to your couch, drape it with a throwmade from a naturalmaterial and eco-friendly dyes. To adda touch of social con-sciousness, choosefrom a multitude of throwsmade by indigenous com-munities in developingcountries, like luxurious al-paca blankets from Peru ormohair from Swaziland.

Decorative bowls madefrom reclaimed wood add atouch of natural beauty, asdo driftwood or Manzanitabranches. Be cautiousabout adding some naturaltouches, though — coral, for instance, is often har-vested in ways that are un-sustainable and threateningto natural environments.

Don’t count out walldecor as a way to expressyour eco savvy, either. Moreand more paint companiesare trotting out low-VOC(volatile organic compound)paints that are safer tobreathe. But if you want toadd extra dimension to yourwalls and make a bolderstatement, add wall muralsprinted on earth-friendly

canvas. Sites like MuralsY-ourWay.com bring beautifulnature scenes right into yourhome. Not only are theircanvas murals made of anecologically friendly fabricmaterial, there are morethan 5,000 options to choosefrom. You can choose every-thing from a jungle scene tothe Mona Lisa, or you canprint a photo of your own ontheir fabric wallpaper.

Greening your furniturecan be done in multipleways. If you’re ready to buynew pieces, consult an inte-rior designer, who can weedout items that don’t matchyour standards. But you canre-use and recycle when itcomes to furniture, too —just make sure you revital-ize first. Consider re-uphol-stering items like diningchairs with exotic fabricsthat are hand-made or an-tique. Suzanis, brightly-col-ored Central Asian textiles

in graphic patterns, make agreat statement fabric, as doboldly embroidered Otomitextiles from Mexico. Ask adesigner to help seek themout, or check out exotic im-port shops — sometimesyou can find large examplesof these textiles that can berepurposed on your furni-ture.

You can also add newlife to pieces already inyour home by paintingthem in one, or a coordi-nated couple, of the year’scolor trends. For 2011,turquoise promises to bebig, as do coral, cobalt blueand eucalyptus green — allcolors inspired by naturalmaterials.

Embarking on a homemakeover project canbe very exciting. Yet,

you may find the processintimidating, both cre-atively and financially. Inyour mind, you see everydetail right down to the im-portant pieces, such asvases and frames, whichmake your house a home. But when you go to buythese items, they are eitherimpossible to find or wayout of your price range.Luckily the solution toyour dilemma is easierthan you think. With a lit-tle imagination and profes-sional quality painter’stape, you can easily createthese customized furnish-ings yourself.

First find inexpensive, unembellished items at dis-count stores, online sitesand even in your own attic.

Then, create patterns byapplying painter’s tape inunique designs such as ver-tical or horizontal stripes.Apply the color(s) you se-lect to customize theseitems so they match the de-sign, style and decor ofyour room. In the end, youwill have a one-of-a-kinddecorative piece that notonly pulls your room to-gether, but is also budget-friendly. These two homepainting project ideas willget you started.

Take an end table fromcommon to custom

An end table, for themost part, is a utilitarianpiece of furniture. So whynot mix form with functionand turn that everyday endtable into an eye-catchingaccent?

Start by wiping off the

top surface ofthe table so it isdry and free ofdust. Usepainter’s tapeto mark off apattern, such as checker-board, geometric or stripes.

When creating your de-sign, the choice of painter’stape is important. Becauseoften the work space on anaccent item is decidedlysmaller than when paintinga wall, having clean, crisppaint lines is vital to thefinal appearance of thepiece. Investing in a pre-mium painter’s tape, suchas FrogTape, helps ensurethe paint does not bleedthrough onto unintendedareas. FrogTape is the onlytape treated with Paint-Block Technology, whichreacts with latex paint andforms a micro-barrier that

seals the edges of the tape, preventing paint bleed.

Once your pattern istaped off, use your choiceof latex paint colors tobring your unique designto life. Incorporate latexchalkboard paint to makethe table a great place toleave reminders and mes-sages. After the paint hasbeen applied, slowly re-move the painter’s tape, letthe paint cure completely, display and enjoy.

No more searching for thepicture-perfect frame

Choosing just the rightframe can turn your prizedfamily photos into true

works of art. But how doyou find a frame that per-fectly complements theimage it is meant to house? You make it yourself.

Start by choosing a solidcolor wood or glass pictureframe. Clean the surface ofthe frame so it is dry andfree of dust. Once again,

use painter’s tape to createdesigns that will add colorand enhance the photo youwish to showcase. Use afoam brush to apply latexpaint within the painter’stape framework. Removethe tape, let the paint curecompletely, add your pic-ture and display.

If you’re a homeowner, you probably consideryour home to be a long-

term investment. But haveyou thought about future-proofing your house tomaximize its value?

Is your house large andaccessible enough to raisea family? Is it possible thatyour in-laws may move inone day? Are you planningto stay in your home afteryou retire? Applying theprinciples of universal de-sign can improve accessand security, enhance style, and ultimately help yourhome meet the needs ofyou and your family foryears to come.

Universal design is apersonalized type of archi-tectural planning that en-sures accessibility on auniversal scale to all peoplewho live in a space, regard-

less of age or ability.“Universal design en-

hances people’s lifestyles,”says designer and authorMary Jo Peterson. “It helpsthem do all of the thingsthey’ve always done but itmakes the space work forthem, for their parents, fortheir children — it bringsaesthetics and accessibilitytogether. In short, it’s justgood design.”

A number of changescan make your home moresafe and accessible for all.For example, you can cre-ate a no-step entry withsloped walkway and tactilepaving leading to the en-trances of a house. Wide, open spaces and largerdoors in the interior ofyour home not only pro-mote accessibility, but alsoenhance the appearance ofyour home.

In the bathroom,Delta Faucet Com-pany’s Bathing Sys-tems inspired byUniversal Designhelp make the user’sexperience func-tional, safe and com-fortable withoutsacrificing beauty. The TraditionalShower System fromDelta Faucet is a styl-ish multi-pieceshower wall set andshower base de-signed to accommo-date users of all agesand abilities. With azero-threshold entryand trench drain, there is nothing forthe user to step overwhen entering or ex-iting the shower, per-mitting easy accessby foot and wheel-chair alike. The sys-tem features an optionalflip-up seat for added com-fort and convenience. Var-ious model sizes make theunit a practical option forany project, whether newconstruction or retrofit.

“Universal design is notsimply a medical solutionto a physical challenge,” Pe-terson says. “Rather it is de-

sign of products and spacesthat precede possiblechanges in the lifespan of ahome and its residents.”

Technology also plays asignificant role in universaldesign products. For exam-ple, touch-sensitive tech-nology enables the user tomanually set the volumeand water to a comfortable

temperature and then startand stop the flow of waterwith a simple tap. Lightswitches with large flatpanels rather than smalltoggles are easier to con-trol. Verve Living systems, for example, incorporateswireless switches that arecompletely movable andcan be placed wherever it

is most convenient to con-trol lighting or miscella-neous electric loadsthrough outlets.

By applying the princi-ples of universal design, you can increase yourhome’s value while mak-ing it a welcoming placefor people of all ages andabilities.

Bathroom remodelingremains America’smost popular — and

profitable — home im-provement. Recessionaside, homeowners, andprospective buyers, stillwant stylish bathrooms thatoffer a relaxing, comfort-able place to recharge andrejuvenate.

While today’s bathroomsare likely smaller in overallsquare footage, they canfeel larger through betterspace planning and innova-tive solutions.

“Small bathrooms can

be just as enjoyable astheir larger, more extrava-gant counterparts thanksto some forethought andclever tricks-of-the-trade,”says Todd Fratzel, a resi-dential construction engi-neer and homeimprovement expert. “It’simportant to start by de-signing an efficient floorplan that is as inviting as itis efficient, and leveragesavailable space and prod-uct innovations.”

Fratzel suggests selectingfixtures that extend yourroom’s size. The Porcher

Solutions wall-mountedDual Flush Toilet con-serves water and savesvaluable real estate by plac-ing the toilet’s water reser-voir in the wall. Part of thecompany’s Solutions Col-lection of luxury bath furni-ture products, the in-walltank system and coordinat-ing wall-hung lavatory arethe perfect small-space so-lution for a down-sized, butfeature-rich, bathroom.

“Extending a room’sphysical square footagethrough built-in or wall-mounted fixtures provides

a ‘big-bathroom’ feel tosmaller spaces,” explainsFratzel, managing editor ofFront Steps Media and au-thor of the website, home-constructionimprovement.com. “Likewise, shiftingfrom a tub to a shower is abetter match for how welive today, as well as ameans of adding more fea-tures in less squarefootage.”

Fratzel notes that multi-function showerheads andhand showers provide thesame relaxation as a soak-ing tub in far less time andwith significantly less cleanup. The American StandardShower System, for exam-ple, features a five-functionpersonal hand shower thatis ideal for pinpointing soremuscles with therapeuticmassaging action.

Another luxury easily in-corporated into a smallbathroom is a residentialsteam shower, which offersa spa-like experience in thesame footprint as a conven-tional shower. The steamgenerator, such as thosefrom Mr. Steam, can be lo-cated away from the bath-room, so that even in adownsized space, home-owners can relieve tiredmuscles, enhance skin toneand treat respiratory condi-tions.

Don’t forget the feet, saysFratzel, who advocates theuse of radiant floor heatingto deliver more consistentroom temperatures moreefficiently and in a health-ier way than conventionalsystems. Ideal for new con-struction and retrofit appli-cations, modern radiantsystems, such as thoseavailable from Uponor, heat objects instead of air.In fact, people with radiantheating systems can becomfortable at tempera-tures six to eight degreeslower than with traditionalforced-air heat.

Finally, small spacesseem larger and more

inviting when filled withnatural light — a task eas-ily accomplished throughthe use of operable acrylicblock and decorative glasswindows from Hy-Lite.The fully customizablewindows come in a broadrange of styles, helpinghomeowners add naturallight and fresh air to aroom without sacrificingprivacy. Operable acrylicblock windows are Energy

Star-qualified in mostareas of the country andmake privacy a breeze inkitchens, bathrooms, bed-rooms, hallways and otherliving spaces.

“Small bathrooms feellarger and more luxuriouswith an eye toward maxi-mizing functionality,” saysFratzel. “Upfront planningwill ensure years of satis-faction and a strong resaleinvestment.”

With summer stillseveral monthsaway, the com-

fort of a hot bath or invig-orating shower continuesto be something to lookforward to every day. However, in many ways, the bathroom can be afrigid place on a cold late-winter or early-spring day.In fact, it often may feellike the coldest room in thehouse thanks to all of thatimpersonal chrome, porce-lain and tile.

But, it doesn’t have to be.It’s possible to warm upeven the chilliest bath-room, even on the tightestof redecorating budgets.

As you plan your bath-room revamp, start bylooking right under yourfeet. Many bathroom floorsare made from ceramic tileor natural stone, such asmarble. Sure, these hard-surface elements look nice, but they also can feeldownright icy on your barefeet, not to mention hardand slippery when wet. With 207 designs in dis-tinctive colors and tex-tures, includingauthentic-looking tile andstone, Tarkett FiberFloorprovides the beauty of nat-

ural flooring with en-hanced durability.

“Today’s fiber-backedresilient sheet flooringproducts aren’t your grand-

mother’s vinyl,” says GaryFinseth, director of market-ing for Tarkett Residential.“The latest options, likeFiberFloor, a ConsumersDigest Best Buy, offer styleand durability at a pricethat doesn’t break thebudget. These floors arewarm and soft underfoot, and they resist scuffs, scratches, indentations andwater. The result is theyare perfect for any bath.”

Warmth, however, goesbeyond flooring. Fluffytowels, plush bathmats anda sumptuous velvet showercurtain will add a sense ofrich warmth to the space.Wall color also plays a role.Light and airy colors, whilebeautiful, definitely do notconvey a sense of comfort.Instead, paint your walls an

unexpectedly rich color tocreate a welcoming, cozyatmosphere. Bear in mindthat warm colors can makea bathroom look smaller, so

be sure to use a soft whiteas an accent to balance outwhatever deep tone you se-lect. For instance, DutchBoy’s Treaded Grapes of-fers a splash of color andwelcoming personality in adeep, classic purple tone.Paint your bathroom wallswith this leading 2011 colortrend and offset the state-ment with NarrativeCream-colored moldingand accessories to create awarm yet open space.

And of course, a qualityshower can easily warm upyour body as well as yourmood. But don’t settle forjust any showerhead. Up-date your shower with anew multi-setting shower-head, such as the MoenNurture eco-performancemodel. This EPA Wa-

terSense-labeled productoffers superior full-bodycoverage and three differ-ent spray settings for an ex-hilarating experience — all

while protecting natural re-sources.

Heated towel racks —once luxury items — noware available at affordableprices for any bathroom, of-fering floor-mounted, wall-mounted, hard-wired andplugged-in options. Imag-ine the luxury of wrappingyourself in a thick, toastytowel the moment you stepout of the shower. This caneasily become reality.

Another warming lux-ury, the overhead heatlight, has come a long wayover the years. Now youhave the option of gettingthat infrared warmth froma standard-sized bulb in-stead of the oversized ver-sions of the past. Theyprovide instantaneousheating. Talk with your

electrician to see what op-tions would best work inyour bathroom.

With so many options towarm up your bathroom’s

decor to fit a wide range ofbudgets, there is no reasonto deny yourself the luxuryof a cozy, spa-like escape athome.

Tarkett’s FiberFloor Easy Living Classic resilientflooring in Savanna Flagstone - Fossil beautifullyprovides warmth underfoot.

Spring is just aroundthe corner, so it’s nottoo early to start think-

ing about preparing yourgarden tools and lawnequipment. Taking the timeto do simple maintenancecan eliminate the hassle ofa piece of lawn equipmentfailing to start.

Having an operationallawn mower should be atthe top of your spring preplist. If you find your lawn

mower has a hard timestarting up, it may be timefor a tune-up. This in-cludes changing the sparkplugs, changing the oil andcleaning the filter. Thesame goes for weed eaters. Both can be taken to amower shop or dealer fortune-up, or can be done bythe do-it-yourselfer.

If you’re handling thetune-up on your own, anoil specifically designed

for use in small engines, such as Royal Purple’s 2-Cycle TCWIII Engine Oil,can be helpful. Usable inlawn mowers and chainsaws, 2-Cycle TCW III in-creases horsepower andreduces fuel consumption, heat, wear and emissions. Its synthetic solvencykeeps spark plugs and ex-haust ports clean as well.TCW III has also beenmember-tested and rec-

ommended bythe NationalHome Garden-ing Club. Al-ways use freshfuel when youstart your lawnequipment forthe season.

A thoroughcleaning of yourtools will allowyou to inspectthem to deter-mine if there areany loose ordamaged parts. If a machine hasblades — like alawn mower,

weed eater or hedge trim-mer — make sure it isclean and sharp. Workingwith dull blades can bedangerous. You shoulddiscard blades that arechipped, damaged orrusted.

You should also makesure your lawn tools arewell-lubricated with an all-purpose synthetic lubri-cant like Royal Purple’sMaxfilm. Maxfilm is rec-ommended for:

• Loosening stuck partssuch as nuts, bolts, locks, hinges, etc.

• Lubricating powertools, hinges, chains, rollers, open gears, fishingtackle and lawn equipment

• Preserving and pro-tecting parts in storageagainst rust and corrosion

Once the initial work isdone, maintenance will berelatively simple, andyou’ll be able to enjoy youryard all spring long.
