Ijust adore jewelry —and it’s not about thebling. OK, it’s a little
bit about the bling, butwhat I love most is how agorgeous piece of jewelrybrings focus to an entireensemble. And gooddesign does the samething. When a room hasthe right focal point, itdraws you in. When it’smissing, the whole roomlacks presence.
My clients, Orla andBrian, had exactly thatproblem. The young cou-ple had recently movedinto their first hometogether and their open-concept living/diningroom lacked any suitablefocus. With plain whitewalls and an awkwardblend of “his and hers”furniture, the space had noreal character.
The couple really want-ed a place where theycould feel at home andentertain family andfriends. So I geared upand, using focal-pointdesign, took theirliving/dining room fromblank slate to bold space.
My big challenges wereto create zones in theiropen-concept space, addmore seating and find away to blend the couple’sstyles. When designing a
multipurpose space, eachzone should have onemain focal point to anchorit. In the living room, Ibuilt a beautiful framed-inbanquette against the side-wall that not only pro-vides some much-neededseating, but also visuallygrounds the space.
To create the banquette,I designed a full wallframe, flanked it with low,white bookcases andinstalled a warm charcoal
upholstered bench cush-ion. But what really makesthe focal statement here isthe banquette’s customblack-leather quilted back-rest that soars from benchto ceiling. Suspended fromthe ceiling, at the top ofthe backrest is the new tel-evision screen, whichvisually blends in againstthe black background ofthe seating niche anddoesn’t deter from thefocus.
This banquette alsoserves to ground a newseating area consisting ofa warm beige sofa, twoteal armchairs, two mir-rored cube tables and acreamy area rug. Andsince the room has nocloset, I introduced a stun-ning piece of reclaimedwood cabinetry to helphide and organize anyclutter.
In the dining room, Ichose the back wall as my
focal point. As with theblack-leather banquette, agreat way to create focusis with color, so I paintedthis wall black, which uni-fies the two zones andmakes a very dramaticstatement. I also includedan elevated electric fire-place in my design foradded visual interest.
I then took the couple’sexisting dark wood din-ing-room table and had it

If a new client of DeepPurple painting contrac-tors wants assurance of
the quality of his company’swork, owner Jimmy Suhshows the customer a col-lection of photos of some ofthe hundreds of projectshe’s completed over theyears.The result?“They are amazed,” Suh
said. “They always com-ment on the meticulousdetailing and the scope ofour work. I also can givethem a DVD that they canreview at their conven-ience. If they want pastclient referrals and testimo-nials, I can provide thattoo.”For 18 years, Deep Purple
was one of the busiestpainting contractors in SanFrancisco, where Suh han-dled residential jobs thatranged from apartmentinteriors to upscale homesin Pacific Heights and his-toric buildings. His com-mercial jobs includedapartment and office build-ings.“Anyone who has been to
San Francisco in recentyears knows how the oldneighborhoods are beingtransformed with new paintand elaborate detailing.Every architect and interiordesigner wants a new andoriginal color scheme.Several clients told me Iwas the best painter in SanFrancisco,” Suh said.
In January 2010, Suh re-established his business inHawaii, where he is alicensed and bonded paint-ing contractor. Here, hecontinues to provide quali-ty painting at competitiveprices for both homes andbusinesses.But why leave a lucrative
painting business in SanFrancisco? the job site to assess thecondition of the property,the amount of prep workthat will be needed, and toselect colors of siding,walls and trim. Once hedetermines the extent ofthe job, he presents a writ-ten quote and time frame. “Although I have a great
crew, I work on every job. Iwant the client to feel con-fident that someone is tak-ing a personal interest inthe project. I approach eachjob as if it were a work ofart, with honesty and withenthusiasm,” Suh said.

Company earns solar industry’s most prestigious certification

Feeling secure withfire egress windows
painted a crisp, fresh white andadded six armless chairs that I hadupholstered in a cool slate color.Over the table I positioned a stun-ning pendant chandelier. I alsoplaced mirrored sconces on eitherside of the dining-room windowsand two dramatic torch lights flank-ing the banquette in the living room— all in the same nickel finish.
To unify the two spaces evenmore, I used similar window treat-ments in both rooms: drapes in a flo-ral fabric of gray, tan, brown andteal. I then added a rustic wovenwooden blind in the living room anda lattice roller blind in the diningroom.Using focal-point design, I was
able to turn a bland open space intotwo exciting and harmonious living

Here’s how to save time, money

When having a photo-voltaic system (PV)installed on your
rooftop, be sure the job is donewith racking systems and flash-ing that meet the InternationalBuilding Code. Modules, forexample, must be installed sothat the units don’t “fly off theroof” during high winds. Toensure against this, roof penetra-tions are made to secure theracking system for the modules.Each attachment needs to beflashed properly so that the roofdoes not leak. Simply caulkingaround penetration is not anacceptable solution.Most manufacturer warranties
guarantee that after 25 years,their modules will produce atleast 80 percent of what they didwhen first installed. The 25-yearwarranty is not a constructionproduct warranty indicating howlong the module will last. Do notbe confused by what these war-ranties are providing.Studies have shown that the
energy produced by PV modulesdepreciates on average about .7percent per year. Some manufac-turers have a track record indi-
cating a better performance thanthis average. Check to see howlong the manufacturer has beenproducing PV modules. Real module efficiency is
shown by power tolerance, peakpower, or pmax rating. A 230-watt module with a pmax ratingof +5/-5 is telling you that thepanel may exceed the rating or itmay provide less energy, up to asmuch as 5 percent. The modulemay only produce 219 wattsrather the 230 watts listed on themodule. These systems will pro-duce less energy than what youhave been led to believe.Because solar modules sit on
rooftops, they are constantlyexposed to the effects of a corro-sive and harsh environment. Thisconstant exposure to nature’selements impacts the quality ofthe packaging that surrounds the
cells,result-ing inpackag ingdegradation.This affects thefunction andintegrity of the mod-ule. It can also lead toperformance issues such aspoor energy production,array performance failure, andsafety issues that includes elec-tric shock hazard. Examples ofpackaging failures include glassbreakage, metal frame break-down, dielectric breakdown,bypass diode failure, encapsulantdiscoloration, and backsheetcracking and/or delamination.Electrochemical corrosion can beintroduced to the module
because of the failures in thepackaging, causing the degrada-tion of power output/perfor-mance and ultimately modulefailure. Because of Hawaii’sharsh environment, homeownersmay want to know more aboutwhat makes a particular solarmodule sturdy enough to providethe service life expected. Homeowners should also be
wary of sales talk that promotesthe manipulation of the state taxcode by providing you with creditsyou don’t deserve. If you havequestions about the tax code, go tothe state’s Department of Taxationwebsite and learn more aboutrenewable energy tax credits.The purchase of a photovoltaic
