Many of us are interested in howenvironmental energy affectsour lives. I’d like to offer some

clarity on what feng shui says about col-ors, mirrors, water, relationships andgifts, by answering the questions I ammost often asked:

Mirrors

Q:I thought putting a mirror at theentrance of a home was good feng

shui, but someone told me that by doingso, you send all the good energy back out. What is correct?

A:Use common sense when it comesto mirror placement at the

entrance. If you stand at the door lookingin, what do you see in the mirror? If itreflects something beautiful that drawsyou in, it will draw that same beautifulenergy into your home. If it reflects

hen it’s time to fix upthat older home, youneed to trust an experi-

enced and local contractor, who supports Hawaii.Tropical Wholesale has beenfixing residents’ homes formore than 30 years. Duringthat period, the company hasworked on thousands ofhomes with a firm commit-ment to quality workmanshipand using the best materials.

Here are key reasons totrust your home to TropicalWholesale:

The company is locallyowned and operated, servesHawaii’s homeowners andprovides the best homeimprovement products thatmoney can buy. TropicalWholesale is not limited toone product, but is a general

contractor with multiplelicenses and products.Tropical Wholesale is a dis-tributor of windows, siding, roofing, patio, bathroom andphotovoltaic solar products. This means it gets factorycontainer load prices.Tropical Wholesale also hasbeen trained to install theseproducts at the factories, andis a certified installer.

Tropical Wholesale has hadto adapt, modify and improvethe way products are installedbecause Hawaii is a veryunique place. Where elsehave you seen a girth board, water table or roof deck madeof canec? Most people don’t

even know what it looks likeand haven’t worked with itbefore. So if you renovateyour home, be sure to choosea local contractor likeTropical Wholesale, theexperts on Hawaii’s homes.

Tropical Wholesale is fullylicensed, bonded and insuredto exceed what is required bythe licensing board in Hawaii. The company has had thou-sands of customers. Some aremost likely friends or rela-tives of yours. Plus, TropicalWholesale is a Sam’s Clubcontractor. So if you’re amember, callTropical Wholesaleor visit Sam’s nation-

al website at samsclub.com tosign up for a free estimate. Goto the member services link, then click on home improve-ment. All products are war-ranted by the manufacturers,Tropical Wholesale andSam’s Club.

Tropical Wholesale onlyuses fully warranted prod-ucts. This means you get thebest warranties. Our windowsare Simonton Win-dows,which are rated No. 1 by J.D.Power. They have a lifetimewarranty on frame, hardwareand workmanship. The com-pany’s siding is Norandex, thethickest vinyl siding available.Tropical Wholesale even hasone that looks like Hardi-Board, but is lifetime warrant-ed. The company has hori-zontal, vertical and shakestyles. It can get any type ofsiding you want, and its roof-ing is Gerard, the only non-prorated roof warranted 100percent for 50 years. TropicalWholesale is a fully licensedelectrical contractor.

Call Tropical Wholesale tosave big. You do not have topay $60, $70 or $100,000 for aphotovoltaic system. Mostimportantly, every time youbuy any home improvementproduct in Hawaii, check tosee if the Mainland manufac-turer has a Hawaii warranty. The reason is that most man-ufacturer standards avoidwarranties for productsshipped to Hawaii because of

the salt-air conditions. Toomany people buy a product, then later need help, only tofind out that the company isout of business and the sales-man had falsely told themthat the items had war-ranties. Rest assured that allTropical Wholesale productshave manufacture warrantiesfor Hawaii.

Your business withTropical Wholesale also sup-ports local charities. Lastyear alone, TropicalWholesale donated to manycharities, including KampHawaii, La Pietra, TheKalima and the SalvationArmy. In fact, TropicalWholesale rebuilt the RobertLewis Stevenson building forthe Salvation Army head-quarters in Manoa in 2010and 2011, to restore the long-missed Hawaii landmark. Sowhen making those finaldecisions, think local to ben-efit Hawaii.

When the time comes totrust your old home to a con-tractor, go with TropicalWholesale. We can do almostany job at a reasonable price, with the best materials avail-able. Remember, vinyl is final. After 37 years of fixingHawaii’s homes, TropicalWholesale can prove it. CallMatthew Houar, owner/con-tractor of Tropical Wholesale.Or, call Mike Houar at 263-1252, or Matt Houar at 292-2942.

COVERSTORY

Page 4: Hawaii Renovation May 20 2012

This is the second in a three-partseries.

Alan Nelson and his wife,Cyndi Keller, are in theprocess of watching

Graham Builders bring theirdreams for Alan’s childhoodhome on Spinnaker Isle in HawaiiKai to fruition. Like so manyhomeowners in Hawaii, they lovethe idea of bringing Hawaii’s tem-perate climate, beautiful waterand outdoor living “into” theirhome.

“We asked Graham Builders todesign a home reminiscent of mychildhood on the water in HawaiiKai,” said Alan. “I grew up on thewater and I work as a marinebiologist. I have spent a lifetimeenjoying all the gifts that theocean has to offer, including surf-ing and just being in it! We want-ed to incorporate the open, airy, wonderful fresh feel of our tropi-cal Hawaiian waters into ourhome.”

In his book, “The Hawaiian

Canoe,” the late Tommy Holmesdescribed Hawaii as “a land ofthe most geographically isolatedculture on earth, discovered andsettled thousands of years beforeCaptain Cook was born.” Were itnot for the water, none of uswould have ever found Hawaii.Alan and Cyndi asked GrahamBuilders to “build that age-oldtradition” into their new home.

Simple but impressive touches, like corner windows, exception-ally high ceilings and a large win-dow at the corner of the bathtubin the upstairs master bath, willoffer more than just rooms with aview. There is not only the closeproximity to the water, but the perception thatthe home is a part of it.For example, soaking

in the master bathtub will giveone the sense of sitting in themiddle of the water located juststeps away outside.

The master bedroom will fea-ture a lanai that seems to “float”over the water below. It is clearlyset back from the water, but theviews makai and down belowmake it seem to extend much far-ther over the water’s edge.

“We really wanted the Nelson-Keller family to feel their sur-roundings in a big way,” saidEvan Fujimoto, Graham Build-ers’ president. “We designed asmuch see-through view as we

could, without sacrificingprivacy, and giving them the feel-ing that they really do live in themiddle of the Pacific Ocean.”

“Everything about our GrahamBuilders home- building experi-ence has been positive,” saidCyndi. “It’s exciting to see all thediscussions and drawings as theyfinally become three-dimension-al. We feel like this has been agroup effort and that GrahamBuilders is just as excited aboutthe project as we are.”

This story is part two of threethat follows the Nelson-Kellers intheir design+build journey withGraham Builders. The completed

project will be unveiled in latesummer. Stay tuned as you won’twant to miss the finished product!

After attending a HomeworksConstruction Build New Or ReDoseminar, a couple with two young

children decided that Homeworks wasthe right contractor for their project. They had recently purchased a 65-year-old home in Kailua with the intention ofremodeling.

When Homeworks project coordinatorSarah VanDeVanter was contacted by thecouple requesting a consultation, sheagreed to meet with them at the home.

“Initially, we looked into the possibili-ties of remodeling, but after a closeinspection of the home, inside and out, itbecame evident that the scales would tipin favor of a complete rebuild,”VanDeVanter said. “When I first pro-posed looking at building a new house, they were excited about the prospect ofowning a brand new custom home, butworried about cost.

“Even with a significant budget ofapproximately $150,000 to $175,000 forthe remodel, it would not be possible toturn this house around. The rooms weresmall and cramped, and the kitchen wascompletely closed off from the rest of thehouse with no natural light or ventilation. Also, the house had been poorly main-tained and suffered from significant ter-

mite damage ... then we discovered sever-al illegal additions. When we reviewedthe problems with the owners andexplained what it would take to fix them,it didn’t take them very long to agree thatrebuilding was the right decision.”

As a design/build firm, Homeworks wasable to handle every phase of the project“in house” — from demolition, to plansand permits, to interior finishes. Theowner, a professional chef, had specificcriteria for his all-new “dream kitchen.”The entire creative process was a collabo-rative effort with the Homeworks team, including architect Mario Tadeo, kitchen

designer Sean Bradshaw, selections coor-dinator Tanny Esperas and VanDeVanter. The completed home not only incorpo-rates all the features specified by theclients, but its interior living space is 250square feet larger than the old house.

“Together with Heather Hickox, whomanaged construction, the team broughtthe owners’ vision to life,” VanDeVantersaid. “The contract was signed in July 2011and the family moved into their new

home last month. Now they are havingfun with the finishing touches and thelandscaping.

“When I made my follow-up call tomake sure everything was working prop-erly and met their expectations, theresponse was, ‘We just love our newhome.’”

As more and more Hawaiihomes and businesses arelooking into solar installation

to help fight rising energy costs, thenumber of homes and businessesswitching to solar panels is on therise for both residential and com-mercial properties statewide.

Before installing a solar panelarray, it is important to assess thecondition of the existing roof. Byensuring the integrity of the exist-ing roofing system, you will avoidfuture problems such as leakage, repair or the need to remove panelsto re-roof. Certain types of roofs, such as tile and shingle roofs, canpresent challenges to the solar con-tractor like cracked tiles or looseshingles. By having your roofinspected and getting the necessary

repairs prior to solar installation, you ensure that your roof is inproper condition for solar installa-tion and is less likely to cause youproblems in the future.

Your existing roof’s warranty isanother important factor to consider.Knowing the warranty of an existingroof is vital when deciding to gosolar. If the warranty will expiresoon or a homeowner has experi-enced persistent leakage, it is a goodidea to install a new roof before mak-ing the investment for solar.Removing solar equipment to makerepairs to a damaged roof can bequite costly. Therefore, it is impor-tant to know how much longer youhave until your warranty expires, soyou can make the best decision.

An inexpensive way to enhance

the integrity of the substrate (roof-ing surface) on your flat or low-pitch roof is through the installa-tion of a coating system. Thiswatertight system ranges in pricefrom roughly $3 to $5 per foot andholds material warranties rangingfrom five years to the lifetime of thestructure. It is advantageous to coatyour roof prior to solar installationbecause this creates a watertightmembrane that will not allow waterto penetrate and cause leakage inthe future.

For steeper roofing surfaces, asphalt shingles are a great option. They also are cost-effective and havemany great warranty options from20 years to the lifetime of the struc-ture. Pricing for this roofing systemranges from $3.50 to $5.50 per foot.

Here at Surface Shield Roofing, wework on a daily basis with manylocal solar companies to ensure thatthe integrity of the roof isn’t compro-mised and remains sound before andafter solar installation. We will assistyou with an assessment of the exist-ing roof, and help you determine themost cost-effective and efficient wayto go solar without needless costslong-term. Whether it be a water-tight coating system for flat and low-pitch roofs, a new metal roof or anew asphalt shingle roof, we willhelp you from start to finish andensure your roof is in perfect condi-tion for solar installation.

Call us today and make anappointment. Let us help you reduceyour energy costs!

something neutral, negative or of nointerest (such as the nosy neighbor’sfront door), place something like a pieceof artwork that you love in the mirror’spath to draw in more favorable energy.

Colors

Q:I am so confused as to what colorto paint the rooms in my house.

Every book says something different. Isthere a simple way to choose the “right”color?

A:When in doubt, choose colors yousee in nature: the browns of the

earth, the greens of the trees, the vibran-cy of the flowers, the peacefulness of theblue sky and the warm golden glow ofthe sun. How does that make you feel? When your interior colors reflect thoseof nature, you bring nature’s life forceinto your home. Avoid colors that are“artificial” or that you wouldn’t find innature. You will never go wrong usingearth tones as your base color andvibrant floral shades as accents.

Water

Q:I know water fountains are goodfeng shui, but I also heard that

placing them in certain areas is inadvis-able. How do I know where to put thefountain to enhance my home’s energy?

A:Placing fountains around theentrance is excellent. Fountains

with a directed water flow should faceinto the home to mirror your movementas you enter. It also is acceptable to place

fountains anywhere along the left wall ofa home or room, or in the far left corner(as you are standing at the door facingin). Avoid large fountains in the bed-room. Too much water there can disruptemotions.

Relationships

Q:I am looking for a partner toshare my life with. What is the

best way to attract someone using fengshui?

A:Different areas of the home corre-late to various areas of your life.

Your bedroom and the far right cornerof your home (as you stand at your frontdoor facing in) relate to relationships. The number two represents relation-ships, so pairs of things are favorable inthose areas, but do not go overboard.

Make sure that you have just a few itemsthat represent the relationship energyyou want to create. Creating the physi-cal space for a partner helps to align theenergy for that person to enter your life.

Likewise, make sure to remove fromplain view any items associated withpast relationships. They could energeti-cally be holding you in the past.

Gifts

Q:What are some good feng shuigifts to give? Can you give me

some ideas that would be appropriatefor most occasions?

A:Plants are universally feng shui-positive items. In your home,

these small pieces of nature create freshair and fill the space with healthy ener-gy. Look for plants that are full, lush andvibrant.

Books represent wisdom and knowl-edge. Giving the gift of a book is a won-derful way to open someone’s mind tosomething new and exciting.

Fruit or sweets, such as fruit baskets, chocolates and the like symbolize wish-es for a full, sweet and abundant life.

For couples, anything in pairs symbol-izes a strengthening of the union, so givetwo of something: pictures, lamps, can-dles, figurines, etc.

The key to giving a feng shui-positivegift is the intention and the symbolism.Try not to get so caught up in pickingthe right color, shape and size thatchoosing a gift becomes difficult. Gowith overall meaning.

for your

MAY 20, 2012 | HAWAII RENOVATION | 11

Lighting is possibly the most pow-erful tool you have when itcomes to interior design. It does

not make sense to invest in beautifulfurniture, rugs, paintings and acces-sories if they are in the dark. The per-fect light fixture not only illuminates aspace — it also is a beautiful, decora-tive design element.

“When looking for a light fixture, think of yourself as a curator lookingfor a perfect piece of art,” said interiordesigner Laurie Smith, known for herrole as a featured designer on the hittelevision show Trading Spaces(2000-2008). Smith said, “Like art, afabulous fixture can make a strongdesign statement, as well as provideillumination for your space.”

Often consumers do not realize thedifference updated lighting can makein their homes. Smith suggests findingone special piece and building a roomaround it. “In design school, welearned that lighting is the most excit-ing and mysterious medium in design.Lighting is sculptural; it’s textural, it’sexciting,” she said.

“There are so many varying stylesand designs in lighting today that thepossibilities are endless. Different

materials and shapes are just part ofwhat goes into determining that per-fect fixture,” said Smith. “For instance,do you want the shape of your piece tocontrast with your room’s schematicor coordinate with it? Taking a tradi-tional fixture and placing it into amodern setting creates interestthrough contrast, while taking a sleekmodern fixture and putting it into atraditional setting infuses new vitalityand a sophisticated accent.”

With so many choices on the mar-ket, the task of selecting a light fix-ture can be difficult and overwhelm-ing for many homeowners. It’s just amatter of developing a plan or oneidea. To help consumers get started,Smith talks about the importance oflighting to interior design in a newvideo series. Each minute-longvideo, created by the AmericanLighting Association, focuses on adifferent aspect of lighting and ways

to incorporate it into every home-owner’s design plan.

Videos in the series include:

• Choosing the Right Lighting Fixture

• Find an Object of Inspiration

• The Impact of a Single Lamp

• Lighting Fixtures as Art

The videos can be viewed on theALA website at www.AmericanLightingAssoc.com.

Whether looking for one fixture or acomplete lighting design plan, a greatplace to start is at an ALA-memberlighting retail showroom. There youwill find professionally trained staff tohelp you select the perfect light foryour space. To find a local ALA show-room, call (800) 605-4448 or go towww.AmericanLightingAssoc.com.

Xiang Feng Cao got hisstart in the constructionindustry while working asa carpenter in China. Heeventually opened hisown business and work-shop there before decid-ing to move to Hawaii in2000.

The skillful craftsmanworked for various localcompanies until decidingto build his own con-struction team. Cao, withthe help of his son, Andy, formed Hua Xia Con-struction in August2008. The duo, alongwith a team of experi-enced workers, has beenassisting local home andbusiness owners with

their building andremodeling needs eversince.

“In China and Japan, wecan see many historic con-struction (projects) thatwere built a thousandyears ago, but are stillsolid and workable,” saidCao. “Our companywould like to help ourcustomers build orremodel their homes likethat. We always providehigh-quality works, friendly cooperation andreasonable cost to ourcostumers.”

As Andy explained, HuaXia receives a great dealof business via positivereferrals and by prospec-tive customers noticingother finished projects.

“Most clients will see ahouse we’ve built orremodeled in the past asan example of our work-manship,” said Andy. “Wefeel confident working asa family to make ourclients happy.”

Hua Xia is capableof handling both com-mercial and residen-tial jobs, and withsummer right aroundthe corner, homeown-ers can count on HuaXia for a wide range ofrequests.

Andy said that kitchenand bathroom additionshave been in demand as oflate — the result of home-owners looking to makechanges to existing struc-tures. Hua Xia is capableof handling the design andpermitting process, fromproviding a free estimateall the way through com-pletion of the project.

Alittle black dress, agreat pair of jeansand a leather jacket

— some styles never goout of fashion. Some ele-ments of home decor sharethat same sense of time-lessness, and none more sothan a simple floral theme.

“Flowers are alwaysfashionable, stylish and on-trend,” says Dani Nichols,a trend-watcher for homedecor website MuralsYourWay.com. “Whetheryou’re looking for just theright touch of elegance and

life for patterned uphol-stery, or modern floralmurals to make an accentwall pop, flowers arealways appropriate.”

Nichols points to hottrends in floral decor thisspring and summer:

Floral walls

“Flowers have alwaysinspired paint makers tocreate colors that pay hom-age to both the boldnessand the delicacy of floralinspirations,” Nichols said. This year, paint manufac-

turers are offering adiverse palette of floral-inspired colors, from dustyroses and iris blues, butter-cup yellow and daisywhite, to frothy lilac andpopping peony.

Floral wallpaper and flo-ral murals also are greatways to incorporate flow-ers into a room’s decor. Asubtle pattern of small, del-icate flowers can create agentle, peaceful feeling in aroom. Or, go bold with anaccent mural that depicts asingle, showy bloom. You

can find a plethora of floraloptions online at websiteslike MuralsYourWay.com.

Sustainability

One of the most enjoy-able ways to decorate withflorals — cut flowers — isalso one of the most fleet-ing. Few beautiful thingsare as short-lived as cutflowers. This season, lookfor cut flower designs totrend toward sustainabili-ty, as everyone looks forways to get more enjoy-ment from their flowersfor longer.

While adding the packetof plant food will help keepa florist’s bouquet alive aslong as possible, there’smore everyone can do tomake their displays moreeco-friendly. Look forflorists who use biodegrad-able packing products, compost their leftoversand choose seasonalblooms that don’t requirelong-distance shipping.

Daring pairings

When you think of floraldesign, you probably envi-sion bright, rich hues

paired with backgroundneutrals. This year, howev-er, florals are going daring, mixing in metallic accentsand deep, saturated pur-ples and blues that almostappear black. A touch ofsilver or gold matchedwith pure white creates anupscale, classic effect. Adash of bronze or coppermarried with vibrant yel-lows or blues is an unex-pected and delightful deco-rating twist.

While bright or light col-ors are as intrinsic to floraldecor as the backgroundgreenery, dark bloomsimpart an almost mysticalaura, whether the hue isnatural or dyed. You’ll seethese daring pairings pop

up everywhere this year, from throw pillows to cen-terpieces.

Nichols also predictsdesigners will continue toexperiment with combina-tions of floral patterns.“Long gone is the conven-tional wisdom that if youhad one bold floral patternin a room, you couldn’t domore,” she said. “It’s per-fectly all right to experi-ment with one floral pat-tern on the drapes and acomplementary — or evencompeting — one onaccent pillows.

“Few decorating themesafford the timelessness andflexibility of florals,” sheadded.

The best way to ensure thatyour home or workplacewill remain cool and com-

fortable is to be ready with anew, efficient, split-ductless airconditioning system.

Systems sold and installed bythe Aire Conditioner Shoppe areavailable in a variety of styles andprice ranges. You can choose asystem that cools only or one thatalso heats.

“This is also a good time toschedule servicing for your exist-ing ductless split system, so it willcontinue operating with high effi-ciency when the hottest weatherhits,” said Aire ConditionerShoppe owner Neil Wiedemann.

The latest ductless split sys-tems provide zoned comfort andare engineered to install quicklyand easily. These revolutionarynew systems available from theAire Conditioner Shoppe, whichspecializes in Fujitsu andMitsubishi, provide both heatingand cooling with a push of a but-

ton on the remote control. Theyalso provide individual tempera-ture control throughout yourhome or business so each room, zone or floor will be the tempera-ture you set.

Concerned about air quality? These systems have the capabili-ty to filter out dust, mold sporesand microorganisms. The DryMode helps to control humiditylevels, even when cooling isn’tneeded. Other standard featuresinclude Sleep Timer AutoChangeover, 24-Hour TimerCold Prevention, Auto Restart/Reset Low Ambient and AutoLouver: Up/Down, Left/ Right.

Concerned about appearance? The cooling-only wall mountedunits, designed for single rooms,

are slim and stylish. Indoor unitshave a clean, aesthetic design andare powerful, though small andshorter in length than competingunits. The variable-speed com-pressor helps systems adapt toshifts in heat load caused by theafternoon sun.

Concerned about noise? Ifsound coming from your currentsystem interferes with TV, con-versation or even falling asleep, treat yourself and your family toa new system. These units are soquiet you won’t even knowthey’re on.

How about cost? “The opera-tive word is ‘efficient,’’

Wiedemann said. “Old or mal-functioning air conditioning sys-tems are energy hogs that don’tdo the job effectively and run upyour electricity bills. The air con-ditioning systems available at theAire Conditioner Shoppe are thenewest models that incorporatethe latest technological ad-vances.” He pointed out thatsplit-ductless systems can be justas efficient as central air condi-tioning, or more efficient interms of energy savings, depend-ing on the lifestyle of the home-owner.

Wiedemann, who has been inthe air conditioning business

since 1979, sells and installs split-ductless systems on Oahu, as wellas portable air conditioners. Healso sells less expensive windowunits that are often the choice forapartments, condos and houses.“Even the window air condition-ing units, which are generallywhat you see in older apartmentbuildings or townhomes, havebeen extensively improved bothin efficiency and appearance. However, the tenant and/orowner needs to obtain permis-sion from the management com-pany and/or apartment ownersassociation to install any type ofair conditioning,” he added.

Both ductless split systems andwindow air conditioners are ondisplay at the Aire ConditionerShoppe showroom in Waipio andalso shown and described on thewebsite, www.aireconditionershoppe.com. The companyinstalls, repairs and services whatit sells. Wiedemann guaranteesthe lowest prices for any producthe sells with installation of thesame equipment. For 10 yearsrunning, Fujitsu has named him“Dealer of the Year.”

Many people thinkthat replacing win-dows in Hawaii

with single-pane glass isenough, but is this reallythe case? We are InteroGroup, Hawaii — your win-dows, doors and sidingexperts working every day toprovide you with the bestproducts that are designed forsuperior thermal performanceand have an affordable pricetag. We believe that single-pane windows are not theanswer.

Here are some reasons to gowith double-pane windows:

1.Single-pane glass has vir-tually no insulating value.

According to Sempra Energy, asingle-pane window canaccount for as much as 75 per-cent of the heat-gain by lettingmore heat pass through theglass and into your room. Youneed more energy to keep theroom cooler. Even if the air isn’tescaping from the house, solarradiation forces you to use air

conditioning more often tokeep the house cooler, whichincreases your energy bills.

2.At Intero Group, we offeryou industry-leading, ener-

gy-saving, double-pane win-dows. Their Low-E coatingreduces unwanted heat pass-through by 80 percent, while let-ting desirable light stream in. InHawaii’s climate, where solarradiation is an issue, installingdouble-pane windows will notonly give you more quiet timeand comfort, it also will saveyou money. Wouldn’t it benice to see how much you’vesaved this month when youopen your energy bill?

3.We recommend that youconsider the value of

your double-pane windowsbased on price, Solar HeatGain Coefficient (SHGC) andU-factor. SHGC measureshow well a window blocksheat from the sunlight, whileU-factor measures how well aproduct prevents heat fromescaping. If your home is air-

conditioned, choose windowswith the lowest SHGC and U-value possible. We guaranteeyour air conditioning will notescape outside, and you cananticipate considerable savingsin your energy bill.

At Intero Group, we onlyinstall Energy Star PackageWindows for Hawaii’s climate,

and we do it for the best priceyou will find on the market. The company offers the DoubleGlazed Glass package, featuringtriple Low-E coating and Argongas-filled windows.

As you look around, you might start tofeel like your

home is a little, well, blah. If so, just adding alittle pop of color intoyour home can help.

Once you have an ideaof the color directionyou are heading in foryour home, the funbegins. Start by thinkingabout the colors youwant to add, where colorcan make the mostimpact, and just howmuch you need to giveyour home a fresh look.

Here are a few tips toget you started on youradventure in color:

Explore color

More than likely, youalready have a favoritecolor in mind and wouldbe OK seeing more of itin your home. Or, maybea little inspiration from

the season’s hottest hueswould help. Either way,the first step is toexplore color. Take avisit to your favoriteclothing boutique, stopin at a paint store or flipthrough home designmagazines. Choose thelooks you are mostdrawn to or the colorsthat evoke a feeling ofhappiness or calm. These colors reflectyour personal style andwill make you feel mostcomfortable in yourhome.

Start small

After picking a colorpalette, don’t go out andpaint your whole housewith it, start small. Justchanging your accentpillows, throws, lamp-shades or accessoriescan make a big impactwhen you are first incor-

porating a new color.Remember to make surethe color flows wellthroughout the entirespace, especially if yourhome has an open floorplan with rooms easilyvisible from one to theother.

Accent with artwork

Another easy way tobring color to your homeis by updating artworkand wall decor. Simplymoving artwork fromone room to another cangive your home arefreshing look, andadding some newly pur-chased pieces to otherspaces can breathe newlife into your home.

Be brave

If you’re ready to goall out with color, it’s OKto make a dramaticchange. The kitchen is a

great place to go bigwith color and is usuallythe gathering place inthe home. One of thebest ways to bring boldcolor in the kitchen andset a tone for your entirehome is to change your

cabinetry. In addition totraditional wood-tonedcabinetry styles, therealso is a growing selec-tion of on-trend paintand stain colors likeKraftMaid’s new Slateand Midnight finishes.

Take it a step furtherby choosing glass-frontdoors and adding a con-trasting back panelinside the cabinet in col-ors like KraftMaid’sserene Aegean or ener-

getic Envy. Cabinetrycolors can bring whim-sy and personality tothe kitchen.

“Colorful cabinetrycan be a big commit-ment, but it also can setyour kitchen apart in asea of design same-ness,” said Sarah Reep, director of designerrelations and educationat KraftMaid Cabinetry.“This year’s cabinetrytrends are colorful yettimeless and work withjust about any designstyle. The KraftMaidStyle Finder on KraftMaid.com is a greatway to see what cabi-netry colors mightwork best for you.”

The beauty of addinghints of color into yourhome is that with just afew thoughtful touches,it can feel as thoughyour home has beencompletely made over.Be sure to carry ele-ments of the color fromroom to room for maxi-mum effect.

inter season wasrough this year, with lots ofwater. In general, our roads and

asphalt are wearing down. Since it’sthat time of year again, spring, betterweather means starting the gardenand maintaining your asphalt. Don’tlet your investment get oxidized andcrumble away. Repair the potholes, fill the cracks, sealcoat the surfaceand restripe with nice, vibrant paint.

Walker-Moody Construction justfinished its repair of King Shops atWaikoloa on the Big Island — on timeand on budget. The company com-pleted 6,300 square feet of asphaltrepairs, crackfilled all cracks largerthan 1/4- inch with CrackMaster PLhot crack filler, squeegee-applied one

coat of OptiPave Plus sealcoat over110,000 square feet, spray-applied onecoat of MasterSeal Ready-To-Usesealer over 110,000 square feet andstriped all traffic lines to match theexisting ones. Walker-MoodyConstruction finished the project inthree phases, which only took threeweeks.

The heart of an effective pavementmaintenance program includes peri-odic sealcoating with an asphalt-based emulsion pavement sealer.Asphalt-based emulsions are not toxiclike coal tar, and are water-based,leaving an easier cleanup. If leftuntreated, asphalt pavement willdeteriorate rapidly. This is because itis made of asphalt binder and rock, soimmediately after paving, the asphaltbinder combines with oxygen and

becomes brittle or oxidized. Thisleads to cracking and weathering soonafter installation because moisturepenetrates the asphalt, which causesfurther damage and deterioration tothe pavement.

Sealcoating protects against oxida-tion. An unsealed pavement allowswater to penetrate the pavement struc-ture, leading to base erosion and, ulti-mately, pavement failure. Sealcoatingprovides a protective barrier to stopwater penetration. Also, if leftunsealed, oil and gasoline will softenand deteriorate the exposed asphaltbinder. Sealcoating provides a protec-tive barrier that resists attack from oiland gasoline. Once the sealcoat beginsto wear off and the rock is exposed, it’stime to apply another coat.

Walker-Moody Construction has the

latest technology and training to pro-vide asphalt maintenance services.Call 839-2781 to talk to the company’strained professionals. They will comeout and review your property, meas-ure the asphalt for accuracy, providerecommendations in a formal propos-al and deliver on-time and on-budgetprojects. If you are an association orboard, they also will talk with direc-tors or attend board meetings toanswer questions. Whether you wanta quick fix or a long-term solution, give the professionals at Walker-Moody a call because they fix it all.Asphalt maintenance work for thecompany is now approaching 9 mil-lion square feet.
