During theseunprecedentedtimes of great per-

sonal and collectivechange, one thing thateveryone needs in his orher home is personalspace. Whether a privatesanctuary or a mini areayou can call “yours,” hav-ing somewhere in yourhome where you canretreat and collect yourthoughts is essential toyour well-being.

With no private space

of your own, living inyour home will be diffi-cult no matter how beau-tiful or spacious, or howaligned your feng shui is,and you may not evenrealize why. Without aprivate space, stayingconnected to yourself andyour needs is more diffi-cult. You may overextendyour energy by giving into what others wantbefore considering your-self, resulting in over-whelm, burnout, a build-up of resentment andeven depression.

Client story

Recently a client calledme, feeling out of sortsand disconnected fromher new four-bedroomhome, even though it had“everything we needed ina house.” She worked full-time, had two childrenand a husband who ranhis business out of a room

in the house. She told methat their home was per-fect in every way — greatlocation, wonderfulneighbors and lots ofspace. Yet for some rea-son, her love for it waswaning, while her family’swas growing.

During my visit, thefirst thing I noticed wasthat she had no privatespace or a room to callher own. Each of the chil-dren had his or her ownroom, and her husbandhad his office, which dou-bled as his private space, where he could go tospend time with himself. When I asked my clientwhere her “private space”was, she realized she did-n’t really have one. Until Ibrought it up, she nevernoticed that she had noteven a corner of a room tocall hers.

Men need their

space, too

Generally, but notalways, the person who ishome the most takes upthe most space. Often, family members spread

out and the man of thehouse is left with nothingmore than his side of thebed. I’ve been in manyhomes where the malepartner had no place tocall his own, other than ashelf in the garage wherehe stored “his stuff.” Insome cases, he used thebathroom as his refuge.Sound familiar?

Drywood termites are amenace to our homesand businesses. There is

a much safer way to treat themwithout the toxic gases andmoving out. Akamai PestSolutions has been treatinghomes and businesses for nearlynine years and has treated thou-sands of structures. Orange oiltreatments have been performedin California for 20 years andeven though they’ve been avail-able here in Hawaii since thelate ’90s, they still seem new tomost people.

As the owner, I want to makesure that our customers feelconfident with our treatmentand have as much informationas possible. Some commonlyasked questions are:

Q:Where does XT-21000

Orange Oil come from?

A:It comes from distilledorange rinds to extract

the oil and D-limonene, thechemical name for Orange Oil.It’s a renewable resource and aby product of orange juice man-ufacturing.

Q:Is XT-2000 Orange Oil a

primary treatment?

A:A primary treatment iswhen your whole struc-

ture is under warranty. Thereare only three primary treat-ments for drywoodtermites: fumigation, heat and XT-2000Orange Oil. Theseare the only methodsthat have beenproven to get a 100percent kill in labo-ratory tests.

Q:How do you

f ind all the

termites in a struc-

ture?

A:Structural Integrated PestManagement, like all

treatments, requires a qualityinspection. A quality inspectionis the key to an efficient andeffective treatment of XT-2000Orange Oil. Drywood termitescannot hide from a qualityinspection. Termites may be liv-ing in inaccessible areas such aswall voids. An inspector withthe knowledge of termites willbe able to determine these pos-sible areas of infestation.Akamai can use methods, such

as using a borescope, dur-ing the treatment phase andthis will allow access andidentification of any addi-tional infestations. With theright tools and knowledge,no termite can stay hidden.

Q:How does XT-2000

Orange Oil work com-

pared to fumigation?

A:We use a precise, compre-hensive drill-and-treat

method. The capillary action ofOrange Oil works like fumiga-tion in many ways, but withoutthe same risks. Orange Oilmoves through wood like a gas, along the path of least resist-ance, filling up the treated pieceof wood until the termites haveno place to hide. Unlike fumiga-

tion, Orange Oil treatments arespecifically targeted at the areaof infestation, so you don’t needto move out.

Q:How does the price com-

pare with fumigation

prices?

A:The cost is based onstructure size and amount

of infestation. Because ourmethod is labor intensive andvery detailed, the cost is oftenhigher, but there are no move-out costs or possible damage-repair costs that are associatedwith fumigation, so the cost isoften the same or less.

I will answer more questionsand provide swarm informationin our March article.

Homeowners have knownfor years that the harshcoastal environment in

Hawaii can cause garage doorsto rust prematurely. Recentstudies in Honolulu have shownthat replacement of an old, worngarage door can recoup thehomeowner 120 percent to 180percent of the job cost, depend-

ing on the quality and features ofthe garage door. This is due tothe enhanced curb appeal of theproperty with a new and attrac-tive garage door. The garagedoor is the largest moving part ofthe house and for most proper-ties is the first or second part ofthe house one sees from thestreet. Preserving the finish on

the garage door enhances thevalue of the home.

Garage doors are available ingalvanized steel, vinyl, fiber-glass, aluminum and wood. Mostavailable doors are one-sidedwith insulation or two-sidedwith insulation. Even a modestnew one-sided garage door willallow the homeowner to recoupwell above the door cost inadded resale value to the house.Homeowners should insist on agarage door with a limited life-time warranty against rust.

Servco Raynor offers a wide

variety of door styles and sizesin all materials. Our best sellingRaynor ShowCase door bringsbeauty and instant curb appealto any house with a substantialwoodgrain texture emboss-ment. But good looks are justthe beginning. Beneath the sur-face, ShowCase also is one ofthe most stringently engineered

garage doors you can own. Itprovides superior strength, unri-valed durability and unsur-passed protection against noise, impact and weather.

ShowCase is made fromrugged, galvanized steel insideand out. Its two-sided steeldesign encases a core of thermal-ly bonded, CFC-free, expandedpolystyrene insulation. A full 2inches thick, ShowCase featuressandwich-style construction andprovides thermal protection at a10.25 R-value. ShowCase has

heavy-duty, hot-dipped, galva-nized steel sections with anepoxy primer and baked-onpolyester finish, which resistsrust and impact denting.ShowCase is available in five dif-ferent door designs and can bespecified with a special durable,fade-resistant laminate film forprotection against rust in a harshcoastal environment.

Visit Servco Raynor OverheadDoor’s showroom at 2841Pukoloa St. in Mapunapuna orvisit us at www.servcoraynor.com to see the style andfunctionality of Raynor doors foryourself. It’s time to give that kitchena new look since it is themost visited room in the

house.Since you are spending so

much time there, don’t youdeserve a room that is efficient, modern and pleasant? Un-doubtedly you want to makeimprovements that make senseand fall within your budget. You also want quality within aprice you can afford. Most ofall, you need an experiencedlicensed contractor who hasproven to be capable of com-

pleting the job at anaffordable price timeand time again.

Essential CabinetRefacing Inc. (ECR) is inits 22nd year of business. For owners Ringo andMichele Pauly, the firstadvice they got as young entre-preneurs came from LexBrodie, who encouraged themto run their business withintegrity. To them, this meantlistening to their customers, sharing their remodelingexpertise with clients to ensure

the job performed was the rightmatch for the customer anddoing the job at a competitive, yet fair price. Since then, theirmission has been to have satis-fied customers at the end ofevery project.

Over the years, materials andremodeling methods have

changed a great deal. ECR haskept current in the industry andoffers up-to-date styles, designsand materials. ECR has offeredrefacing as an economicaloption for upgrading cabinetssince 1989.

Refacing is the method ofgiving cabinets a “facelift”without going through the timeand expense of ripping outexisting cabinets and installingnew ones. Since the doors anddrawers are replaced, the exte-rior of the cabinets is brandnew and gives a modernizedlook. The interior remains thesame and a lot of money issaved. This gives customers thefreedom to increase their budg-et and add features such as newcountertops, appliances or spe-

cial features like rolling pull-out drawers.

As the customers’ needschanged, ECR has continued toexpand on its scope of work toinclude new custom-built cabi-nets and countertops. Customcabinets are locally built inECR’s shop. Owners have theirchoice of materials in the cabi-net structure, hardware andexterior finish. Countertopscome in almost any materialcustomers desire.

ECR is located at 212Mohonua Place. Showroomhours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30p.m., Monday throughSaturday.

gather most. And it’s almost always thebusiest room when entertaining friends.

But if your kitchen is outmoded orlooking just plain drab, some easy, cost-effi-cient updates can make it more inviting, without undertaking a major remodelingjob.

WALLS Wallpaper styles come and go. And if

your walls were papered more than a fewyears ago, you are probably living with adesign that’s no longer in fashion.

For a timeless look, strip the dated wall-paper and replace it with a bright newcoat of paint. Be sure to choose a colorthat nicely complements the floors, coun-tertops and cabinets.

For a modern take on wallpaper, lookfor mosaic tile collections that showcasebeautiful tiles and patterns, providing tex-ture for any wall in your home. For exam-

ple, Trend USA offers patterns ideally suit-ed to give tired accent walls a fresh twist.

COUNTERTOPS Inconvenience is a major factor with a

full kitchen remodel. But you can updatethe overall appearance of the kitchen byredoing just the countertops. For exam-ple, Granite Transformations, a kitchen andbathroom remodeling company, can trans-form a kitchen in one day by replacingyour countertops with heat, cold andscratch resistant glass or granite.

For an even more elegant look, consid-er opting for mosaic tiles, inspired by tra-ditional Italian glass mosaics.

If you’re nervous about making such adrastic change, fear not. New technologiesare making it easier for consumers to visu-alize potential refurbishments. A new iPadapplication, iGRANITE, for instance, allowsusers to upload a snapshot of their space, and change the colors and textures ofevery surface of the room. More detailsabout downloading the app can be found

at www.granitetransformations.com.

APPLIANCES When is the last time you replaced

your kitchen appliances? No appliance, however durable, will perform optimallyforever. It may be time to evaluate if yourproducts are really doing the job.

Replacing major appliances like stovesand refrigerators might sound like anexpensive prospect, but outdated prod-ucts are not always as energy-efficient asnewer models. Swapping these items willnot only give your kitchen a sleek newlook, they might also save you money onutilities in the long run.

According to real estate experts, kitchen updates offer homeowners thehighest return on investment than anyother home improvement job. Sowhether you’re planning to sell yourhome or simply bring it into the 21st cen-tury, you’d be wise to start with thekitchen.

Dreaming about a bathroom remodel? With today’s easy-to-install products— many of which also are easy-to-

clean — your new bathroom can actuallyexceed your wildest dreams. What could bebetter than an easy-to-clean new bathroom?

Here are some tips to bring your dreambathroom to life in less time and for less

money than you might think:

NO TOOLS TOILET REPLACEMENTThe American Standard No Tools Toilet is

so easy to install, it doesn’t even require spe-cialty tools. Everything you need is right in thebox, along with simple, illustrated instructions.Whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or direct-

it-yourselfer, easy-to-install innovations makebathroom remodels speedy and simple, whilereducing the possibility of delays from instal-lation errors.

COLOR CONFIDENCEThe Pantone Color of the Year for 2012 is

“Tangerine Tango,” continuing a trend towardbrighter, happier colors. Paint is one of the eas-iest and least costly ways to completely changea bathroom. Donna Frasca, an interior designerand color specialist who blogs atColorSpecialist-Charlotte.Blogspot.com, rec-ommends coordinating with colors that arealready in the room.

“Look at the colors that are in your tile,”Frasca says. “Do you see a lot of yellows? Doesyour tile look more gray? Sometimes all youhave to do is just pick one color that matchesyour tile to tie in the look of your bathroom.”

Not ready to do the Tangerine Tango all overyour bathroom? Go neutral on the walls andadd pops of color with towels, rugs or a showercurtain to create an attractive, finished look.

EASY ACCESSORIZINGFaucets are like jewelry for your bathroom,

so they should be easy to update as styles andfashions change. Look for the wide variety offaucets that come with a pre-assembled SpeedConnect drain that has just four parts instead

of 14. No special tools or plumber’s puttyrequired. The drain seals tightly so water staysin the sink. The lift rod comes preset to thecorrect height and never comes loose.

FABULOUS FINISHWarmer finishes such as oil-rubbed bronze

make an instant style statement, tied togetherthrough lighting, cabinet hardware andfaucets. A whimsical light switch cover in acomplementary finish offers a beautiful andunexpected touch.

GO EASY ON CLEANINGSpend more time enjoying your new bath-

room and less time cleaning. Real Simple maga-zine recommends a semigloss paint for bath-rooms, because it is resistant to humidity andstaining, as well as easy to clean. Toilets with anEverClean surface incorporate a patentedantimicrobial agent to inhibit the growth ofmold and mildew, while the smooth, mirror-likefinish helps keep surfaces cleaner. EverCleanwhirlpools feature an exclusive whirlpool circu-lation system that protects pipes and fittingsfrom mold and mildew, and it never wears off.

With today’s advancements in simple installa-tion and easy-to-clean surfaces, there’s no rea-son to wait on a beautiful new bathroom. Makeit happen this spring.

If you want your home to reflect your personal style, whynot start in the kitchen? The kitchen, commonly the mostpopular room in the house for everyday life and entertain-

ing, doesn’t have to be cookie cutter with coordinating colorschemes. Current trends give homeowners leeway to add per-sonal flair to the kitchen with bursts of color, unique designsand unexpected patterns.

Walls painted in neutral hues, and appliances and fixtures inmonochromatic finishes, create a nice “blank canvas” that youcan dress up with bold accessories or patterned fabrics. DeltaFaucet recently launched an Arctic Stainless finish on its Trinsicfaucet, which features cool blue undertones, that coordinateswell with new stainless steel appliances.

If you want to kick up your kitchen decor another notch, explore your color options. Colorful kitchen products andappliances abound. Mixers, blenders, teapots and even faucetsare available in a variety of colors, such as blue, red, pink or yel-low, and can add an unexpected pop to your space. The DeltaFaucet Fuse kitchen collection features a split finish pull-downfaucet, which is available in a stainless finish with fun options likecracked pepper, chili pepper or snowflake white finish accents.

“Color blocking is something that is trend-ing in both fashion and interior design,” saysJudd Lord, Delta Faucet Company directorof industrial design. “People want to expressthemselves through home decor just likethey do with their own style.”

If you want to stay on top of currenttrends, then try experimenting with the2012 Pantone color of the year — TangerineTango. Radiating warmth and energy, thebright hue can energize a room. Incorporate the color on asmall scale with table linens or go bold and paint one of thewalls to add dimension.

You can also spice things up by creating a more eclectic look. One way to do this is by mixing and matching cabinetry hard-ware designs. There are many different styles, sizes, colors andmaterials, making it easy create your own custom space. Orswitch up your kitchen table and chairs, using different stylesinstead of a matching set. Try an antique table with chairs thatare structured and modern or upholstered with a variety ofbold patterns. Add in a bench on one side to make it even

more unexpected. For more of a subtle, eclectic look, combine a variety of din-

nerware pieces that hang together with one consistent thread, such as bold color or an unexpected pattern. The best part isyou don’t have to stress if you break a plate, can’t find the exactpiece to match the collection or have more guests than match-ing dinner sets.

Customize your kitchen space by adding a hint of color orplaying around with mixing and matching wherever you feelcomfortable. You’re going to spend a lot of time in your kitchen,so have fun with it and make it your own.

We will discussthe first threebarriers that

make workforce housingunavailable. These are:

1) Time

2) State extractions

3) County extractions

Time is a major costdriver, and as the sayinggoes, “time is money.”Why does it take so longto get approvals? Thefirst thing that needs tobe done is to get inputfrom all stakeholderswho will be impacted bythe project. This takes

one to two years of pub-lic hearings throughoutthe community.

All this information isthen put into anEnvironmental ImpactStatement (EIS) andreported back to the

stakeholders. The stake-holders then have anotheropportunity to changetheir mind and demandnew changes. Negotia-tions take place betweenthe stakeholders and theproject to negotiate these

changes into the project. This is also when thestate demands free landfrom the project to buildschools, freeway on- andoff-ramps and infra-structure needed by the

brand all-weather furniture, which was developed in theland down under to withstandthe country’s harsh environ-ment.

The key to the furnitureline’s success has been choos-ing durable and appealingmaterials. Merbau wood (alsoknown as kwila) was regardedas one of the most durableand stable timbers in theworld. It grows in NorthernAustralia and acrossSoutheast Asia. It is well-known as the wood of choicefor building docks, decks andflooring. Merbau is the per-fect wood for outdoor furni-ture. It is twice as hard asteak, which makes it resistantto abrasion, pitting or rough-ening.

Prior to manufacturing, merbau is kiln-dried to amoisture content of 12 per-

cent. This stabilizes the struc-ture of the timber so it doesn’twarp or crack. The furniturecontains reddish-brown tan-nin, which gives its character-istic color. This tannin makesthe wood naturally rot-resis-tant and insect-proof. Thefurniture is constructed usingmortise and tenon joints withcross doweling. This preventsloosening of the componentsover time. All the hardware iscorrosion-resistant, 304-gradestainless steel and nickel-plat-ed brass. The assembly, prep-ping and finishing are all doneat the company’s Kaneohefacility.

Personal Space

Every person living in thehome should have a spaceto call his or her own. Ithelps one feel a part of the

life of the house. Withoutthat private refuge, the indi-vidual tends to stay outmore and is more short-tempered and irritablewhen home. While havingone’s own private space is

not always feasible for eachperson in the household, even a small clutter-free,clean and comfortable“area” or corner will work.

Include some or all ofthe following physical fea-

tures when creating pri-vate space:

1. If possible, find an arearemoved from the mainflow of traffic in the home.

2. Preferably find a spacewith a door that locks or atleast a partition of somesort.

3. Have a comfortablechair or lounger.

4. Use your favorite colorsor choose colors that youcan find in nature —greens, yellows, earthtones and blues.

5. Place inspirational itemsin your space such asbooks, a personal journal, photos or objects that rep-resent happiness.

The private space ideal-ly will make you feel:

• Supported

• Inspired

• Safe

• Peaceful

• Centered

Set intent for space

Plan to use this space asa getaway, to be still, meditate, breathe, read, journal, celebrate suc-cesses and reassess yourlife. Do this for yourselfand watch the love foryour home grow.

state to mitigate issuesin the EIS.

After the project is vet-ted and approved at thestate level, the sameprocess is held at the citylevel. Now the city candemand sewage treatmentplants, roads, drainagesystems, water wells, firehydrants, parks and badlyneeded infrastructureupgrades in the areaimpacted by the project. This process may take upto another two yearsbecause the stakeholdershave another opportunityto put more demands onthe project.

All these costs are adirect cost of the projecteven before the project isdesigned. Now the devel-opment plans and thegeneral plans aredesigned to incorporate

all these costs. Also hidden in these

extractions is the percentof workforce housingnegotiated by the statethat must be suppliedwithin the project. This iscalled “inclusionary zon-ing.” How is this done?Workforce homes aresubsidized to meet thecost that a median incomefamily could afford. Thesubsidy is supplied by thehigher-priced homeswithin the project. Forexample, the homesaround a golf course orhomes that have viewsare priced higher to subsi-dize the workforce hous-ing that is built within theproject. When homebuy-ers cannot afford thathigher-market priced

home and these subsidiescannot be absorbed, theproject stalls or dies.

Does anyone care if aproject fails? Our attitudehas been that we don’tneed more homes. Isthere political will tochange this process? When the supply is lowand the demand is high, the cost of homes contin-

ues to increase. For everyproject that is stalled orkilled, we are the victims, unless you already haveyour own home and reallydon’t care.

last few years. Most peo-ple now know what solarphotovoltaics are, as they

can be seen on rooftopsthroughout the state. Asthe price of electricityrises, more and more ofus are considering PVsystems for our own

homes. Because a PV sys-tem is a big investment,we should do ourresearch before commit-ting to a specific solarprovider, especially sincePV companies are a dimea dozen.

So what should we beconcerned about whenconsidering PV? First ofall, what qualifies a com-pany to install a PV sys-tem? The proper licensingis a necessity. To installPV, a C-13 electricallicense is a must. There

are a few ways tocheck online if acompany has theproper licensing.Searches can bedone throughhttp://pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app or http://hawaii.bbb.org. A quali-fied electrician can tellyou if your service needsto be upgraded, if yourgrounding system is up topar or if any electricalmodifications should bemade to accommodatethe PV system. After all,you will be producingyour own power andthere is a lot of electricalwiring involved.

Next, getting severalestimates from differentcompanies is always agood idea. From theseestimates we can com-pare pricing and materi-

als. Are the materialsbeing used comparable toone another? Some com-panies may use roofflashings, while othersmay not. A properlyinstalled flashing willensure a leak-free roofpenetration. After all, thebigger the system, themore roof penetrationswill be made.

Another important fac-tor to consider is the PVpanel manufacturer. PVpanel manufacturers alsoare a dime a dozen.Manufacturers may spec-ify certain specificationsfor their panels, but howlong have they been pro-

ducing solar panels?Alternative Electricproudly installsSolar World SunModules. SolarWorld is America’s

largest solar manufactur-er with more than 35years of experience in thesolar production indus-try.

A PV system is a wiseinvestment, but it’s morethan just installing panelson a roof. Homeownersshould do their home-work before installing asystem. After all, a PVsystem should last at least25 years. Time spentresearching will pay divi-dends for the life of thePV system.

Doing your solarenergy homework

The time has comefor The Cool RoofStore by Green

Energy Outlet (GEO) —and just in time to rescueHawaii’s roofing expens-es.  At the store, crowdsare educated aboutinstalling an affordable, renewable roof.  Insteadof reroofing your homeagain, simply apply a topcoat every seven to 15years for the life of yourstructure.

Until recently, roofingwas a very expensiveproposition — especiallyif you had an old asphaltroof (composition shin-gles, pitch and gravel ormineral surfaced rollroofing). After about 10 to15 years of exposure toUV rays under the hotHawaiian sun, asphaltroofs are prone to curl andcrack, causingleaks. Because of theirheavy weight, the roofshad to be torn off andhauled to the dump atgreat expense — about$2,000 for the labor anddump fees. That didn’teven include the price ofthe new roof or the insu-lation underneath.

If you wanted yourhome to be cool, you had

to add expensive insula-tion to achieve the rec-ommended “R-19 Value”in the building code.Unfortunately, there wasa serious side effect toadding that insulation, which most people didn’teven know about. Sincethe heat from the suncouldn’t get past theinsulation and into yourhome — you were indeedcooler.  That’s a goodthing! But since that heatwas being trapped in theasphalt roof itself, itbecame hotter andcracked more quickly —a definite bad thing!

So what do you do?The answer lies in put-ting on aprotective,  reflectivecoating, preferably withCeramic Titanium gran-ules like HawaiianSunGuard.  That blocks100 percent of the UVrays from the sun, allow-ing your roof to last aslong as your structuredoes.  Just simply recoatwhen needed.

If you have heavyponding water, The CoolRoof Store recommends asilicone coating in thoseareas.  Silicone coating ismore expensive per gal-

lon, and can be a littletricky to put down if youdon’t know a few secretsof the trade.  However, once down it will notchalk off over time — orso the manufacturers say— like water-basedacrylics do. Some manu-facturers even claim a 20-year material warrantyfor their products. Sincethese coatings have nothad that long of a  pres-ence in Hawaii, this hasnot yet been proven inthe 50th State. That’s why
