PENITENTIAL ACT

All: I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

SEQUENCE Jehan Revert (1920–2015)

This setting of the Sequence was traditionally sung on Easter Sunday at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. We are united in prayer with the hope that it will one day be sung again in that great space.

Victimae Paschali laudes immolent Christiani. Agnus redemit oves:

Christus innocens Patri reconciliavit peccatores. Mors et vita duello conflixere mirando:

dux vitae mortuus regnat vivus. Dic nobis Maria, quid vidisti in via?

Sepulchrum Christi viventis, et gloriam vidi resurgentis. Angelicos testes, sudarium, et vestes.

Surrexit Christus spes mea: praecedet suos in Galilaeam. Scimus Christum surrexisse a mortuis vere:

tu nobis victor Rex, miserere. Amen. Alleluia.

Christians, to the Paschal Victim offer thankful praises! A Lamb the sheep redeems;

Christ, who only is sinless reconciles sinners to the Father. Death and life have contended in that combat stupendous:

The Prince of Life, who died, reigns immortal. Speak, Mary, declaring what you saw, wayfaring.

“The tomb of Christ, who lives, the glory of his resurrection; Bright angels attesting, the shroud and napkin resting.

Christ my hope is arisen; to Galilee he goes before you.” Christ indeed from death is risen, our new life obtaining. Have mercy, victor King, ever reigning! Amen. Alleluia.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION William Henry Monk (1823–1889)

GOSPEL John 20:1–9

Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And with your spirit.

Priest: A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, Lord.

Following the reading: Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Please remain standing until the Gospel procession returns to the sanctuary. All are seated for the Homily.

HOMILY The Pastor

RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES

To each question, all respond I do.

SPRINKLING RITE Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548–1611)

Vidi aquam egredientem de templo, a latere dextro, et omnes, ad quos pervenit aqua ista,

salvi facti sunt, et dicent, alleluia!

I saw water flowing from the right side of the temple; All to whom this water came were saved,

and they shall say: alleluia!

OFFERTORY Edward C. Bairstow (1874–1946)

Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously. Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea.

Mighty victim from the sky, Hell’s fierce powers beneath thee lie; Thou hast conquered in the fight, thou hast brought us life and light;

Now no more can death appall, now no more the grave enthrall, Thou hast opened Paradise, and in thee thy saints shall rise.

Alleluia. Amen.

AGNUS DEI Missa Resurrectionis Gerre Hancock

COMMUNION 1 Corinthians 5:7–8 Pascha nostrum immolates est Christus:

itaque epulemur in azymis sinceritatis et veritatis, alleluia. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed,

therefore let us keep the feast with the unleavened bread of purity and truth, alleluia.

MUSIC AT COMMUNION English, arr. Charles Wood (1852–1924)

This joyful Eastertide, away with sin and sorrow!

My love, the Crucified, hath sprung to life this morrow.

Had Christ, that once was slain, ne’er burst his three day prison,

Our faith had been in vain: But now hath Christ arisen.

My flesh in hope shall rest, and for a season slumber:

Till trump from east to west shall wake the dead in slumber.

Death’s flood hath lost his chill, since Jesus crossed the river:

Lover of souls, from ill my passing soul deliver.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c.1525–1594)

Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum: ita desiderat anima me ad te, Deus.

As a deer longs for flowing streams, so longs my soul for you, O God.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Regina cæli, lætare, alleluia,

Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia Resurrexit sicut dixit, ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.

Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia, For He whom you were worthy to bear, alleluia,

Has risen, as He said, pray for us to God, alleluia.
