Lent is a season of the Christian Year where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting in order to grow closer to God. When is Lent? It's the forty days before Easter. Lent ex- cludes Sundays because eve- ry Sunday is like a little Easter. Basically, it's about one-tenth of a year (like a tithe of time). Mardi Gras is the day before Lent, which begins with Ash Wednesday. This year it's from March 1 (Ash Wednesday) to April 16 (Easter), 2017. Mardi Gras? What does that have to do with JESUS?? Mardi Gras means "Fat Tues- day." It refers to the day before Lent starts. Since Lent always starts on a Wednesday, the day before is always a Tues- day. And it's called "Fat" or "Great" because it's associat- ed with great food and parties. In earlier times, people used Lent as a time of fasting and repentance. Since they didn't want to be tempted by sweets, meat and other distractions in the house, they cleaned out their cabinets. They used up all the sugar and yeast in sweet breads before the Lent season started, and fixed meals with all the meat available. It was a great feast! Through the years Mardi Gras has evolved (in some places) into a pretty wild party with little to do with pre- paring for the Lenten season of repentance and simplicity. (This day is also known as Shrove Tuesday, or in PA Dutch country as Fastnacht Day.) Oh well. But Christians still know its origin, and hang onto the true Spirit of the sea- son. So the real beginning of Lent is Ash Wednesday? Yes. Ash Wednesday, the day after Mardi Gras, usually begins with a service where we recognize our mortality, repent of our sins, and return to our loving God. We recognize life as a precious gift from God, and re- turn our lives towards Jesus Christ. We may make resolu- tions and commit to change our lives over the next forty days so that we might be more like Christ. In an Ash Wednesday service, usually a minister or priest marks the sign of the cross on a person's forehead with ashes. Why ashes? In Jewish and Christian history, ashes are a sign of mortality and repent- ance. Mortality, because when we die, our bodies eventually decompose and we become dust/dirt/ash/whatever. Repent- ance, because long ago, when people felt remorse for some- thing they did, they would put ashes on their head and wear "sackcloth" (scratchy clothing) to remind them that sin is pretty uncomfortable and leads to a sort of death of the spirit. This was their way of confessing their sins and asking for for- giveness. Where do the ashes come from? On what we now call Palm Sunday, Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem while people waved palms and cheered him on. Less than a week later, Jesus was killed. The palms that were waved in joy became ashes of sorrow. We get ashes for Ash Wednes- day by saving the palms from Palm Sunday, burning them, and mixing them with a little oil. It's symbolic. What do Christians do with ashes? At an Ash Wednesday service, folks are invited to come forward to receive the ashes. The minister will make a small cross on your forehead by smudging the ashes. While the ashes remind us of our mortality and sin, the cross reminds us of Jesus' resurrec- tion (life after death) and for- giveness. It's a powerful, non- verbal way that we can experi- ence God's forgiveness and renewal as we return to Jesus. So what is LENT? At Jesus' baptism the sky split open, the Spirit of God, which looked like a dove, descended and landed on Jesus, and a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, My Beloved, with whom I am pleased." Afterward, as told in Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus was sent into the wilderness by the Spirit. Where he fasted and prayed for 40 days. During his time there he was tempted by Satan and found clarity and strength to resist temptation. Afterwards, he was ready to begin his ministry. Maybe Jesus needed some time with God to sort through the major changes happening in his life. Friends of Michelle Hertzog Boser are holding a comforting afternoon at our church on Sunday, March 12 from 12:30

- 3:30 p.m. to raise funds for her and her children. Sadly, Michelle is going through a terrible divorce and needs help. When we fall on difficult times we tend to lean on our family for help. Michelle’s parents are both deceased and she does not have family to lean on. It is friendship then, that holds us strong. That is where Michelle’s friends stepped up. Michelle has two beautiful children, a boy and a girl who need their own bedroom, this makes keeping a 3-bedroom apart-ment expensive. She is also finding her attorney, although very helpful, to be an expense she did not expect. Michelle works full-time as a Learning Support teacher in York, PA but she is struggling financially as a single mother and needs help. We are inviting you to come to our

comforting afternoon, receive some re-laxing services and to donate funds for Michelle's expenses. We pray that God's family would come together to help Michelle, we pray that

the body will support her during this time of need. We pray that God would greatly bless you for your kindness for helping this dear lady. Please keep Michelle and her children in your prayers. Any questions: Contact Jess Shelley 717-659-6033 or Sandy Walker 717-417-

Sandwiches: Turkey and Ham will be offered for $5 (a signup sheet for this is hanging in the Narthex) ordering ahead is recommended.

Refreshments will be complimentary. If you have no money to spare, but have a kind word to share, please come. Stay, sit and relax with us. Talk with Michelle.

10. Try an electronic fast. Give up TV, Facebook, texting, tweeting, e-mail and all things electronic for one day every week. (Or everyday of Lent!) Use the time to read & pray. Learn about fasting.

9. Start a prayer rhythm. Each day of

Lent, go to The Upper Room's pray-er wall and pray for another person.

8. Go deeper into the Bible. Take an

online course on the "I Am" sayings of Jesus.

7. Forgive someone who doesn't de-

serve it (maybe even yourself.) Study a book on forgiveness, such as Forgiveness, the Passionate Journey .

6. Give up soft drinks, fast food, tea or

coffee. Let Juliana’s Ice Cream Fast inspire you to give up some food or drink as a way to grow closer to God. Give the money you save to help folks in a different part of the world who are in crisis. Pick a cur-rent global issue and help change the world.

5. Create a daily quiet time. Spend 10

minutes a day in silence and prayer. Read a daily devotional for the sea-son of Lent. See how it can help you add spiritual practice to your daily life beyond Lent.

4. Cultivate a life of gratitude. Write

someone a thank you letter each week and be aware of how many people have helped you along the way. Learn more about spiritual

practice of gratitude. 3. Participate in a Lent Photo-a-Day

practice and pray each day with your camera in your hand. Start praying.

2. Volunteer one hour or more each

week with a local shelter, tutoring program, nursing home, prison min-istry. Learn about the global issues and how you can help.

Dear Shining Light Ministries, Thank you for serving at-risk families! We want you to know that every little bit that you give matters: your prayers, your time, your thoughts, and your donations. Our goal is to help at risk families achieve a sustainable lifestyle and it is only possible with your love and dedica-tion. We have witnessed amazing growth this past year in the SARF ministry. We have gained many partners like yourself and have seen it directly affect the spiritual, emotional, and physical growth of our families. We hope you have been able to utilize the new mySARF website (mysarf.servants.org) to learn more about the family(ies) you support. We have also recently started a quarterly SARF newsletter to keep you informed of general ministry progress and needs. We invite you, if you haven’t already, to continue being more involved in SARF and especially the lives of your sponsor family. On the mySARF website, you can write to your family. Our updates will specify prayer needs for each family. You can also use the website and news-letter to tell you friends, family, and church about how they too can be a part of the Serving At Risk Families ministry and be a part of lasting change.

Thank you for being a blessing, The Serving At Risk Families Team

Dear Winterstown UMC, Your financial contribution is a direct gift from God for the homeowners we serve! Your gift empowers us to reach out to families in need in York County week after week. Because of your faithful giv-ing, in recent years, we have been able to serve in excess of 100 homeowners annually! We all need hope. Your gift is hope to the families we serve - families that have exhausted every other avenue

for help. They feel alone, lost, and afraid. But God. God has prompted you. He prompted us. He is reaching out to our neighbors in need with His love and His promise of hope. I wish you could see the faces of home-owners I get to see. More than that, I wish you could experience the transfor-mation in these homeowners as they realize that help is coming. Hope is re-stored as we meet with, love, work alongside, and care for each individual. You gift is what makes this possible! We met Mr. & Mrs. L in June of this year. This delightful couple has worked hard, served our country and their community, loved their neighbors and trusted God with their lives. Now, Mrs. L has been diagnosed with ALS and their world has

flipped upside down. I am refreshed eve-ry time I meet with this couple. Their love for each other is stronger than ever as Mr. L truly serves his bride. They tease each other and just enjoy each other’s company. A sign on their door reads “My wife has ALS - but ALS doesn’t have her”. They take one day at a time. It is a blessing to know them. They live in a small 3-story home with lots of steps. The house sits on a hill so there are even more steps. Mrs. L can no longer speak so we communicate by her writing everything down - her smile is infectious! With eyes of hope, she told me she hasn’t been outside since March when she had fallen. She said that she just wants to sit on her back porch and listen to the birds sing. She couldn’t be-cause there was a step down to the porch and she can’t do steps anymore. Also, the porch was very wobbly and unsafe. But God. Because of financial partners like you, we had a team of volunteers serve these homeowners the last week

of July. The volunteers were able to re-build the porch and move it to a higher elevation so Mrs. L could roll out her back door to enjoy the outdoors again! Not only were we able to minister to the physical needs in the home but God allowed us to come alongside the emo-tional and spiritual needs as well. It was really refreshing to see a group of men come alongside Mr. L and encourage him while working to restore freedom for Mrs. L. God wasted nothing; this project was an incredible journey! Our Team cannot do this alone, nor does God want us to. Your financial support is one of the cornerstones in the foundation which allow us to provide hope for our clients. Your donation is truly a gift, a building block! We are blessed to have you on our Team - the team that serves Christ by serving others. I trust you will be blessed knowing how much you are blessing others.

Blessings dear friends, The Home Helps Team,

Bunny Brunch

Winterstown U.M. Church (717-244-1984) Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 10:00 A.M.

Preregistration greatly appreciated! “Here comes Peter Cottontail….” and he’s calling all children, up to the age of 12, to come join him for an “eggstra” special morning of fun at our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bunny Brunch here at Winterstown United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.! This event is not only for our church families, but will be opened as an outreach to the commu-nity as well … so invite your friends! We will have a short time of storytelling, a visit and brunch with the Easter bunny himself and, of course, the much anticipated egg hunt with goodies! Don’t forget your basket! The egg hunt will be held in the field as we did last year, so wear appropriate shoes as well! In order to properly prepare for the day, we would appreciate prereg-istration of as many children as possible; however, this form can also be filled out on the day of the event as well. You can pre-register your child by going to www.winterstownumc.org and click on register for events OR filling out forms that are on the table in the narthex. Completed forms can be placed in the offering plate or turned into the office at your convenience. Please…one child to a registration form. If you can contribute any wrapped candies to insert into our plastic eggs for the children, we would greatly appreciate it, as we are praying for a HUGE turnout! Your donations can be placed in the designated box in the narthex starting March 1, 2017. We ask that all candy donations are placed in the box no later than Sunday, April 2, 2017. If you wish to make a mone-tary donation you can place it in an envelope and mark the envelope Easter Egg Hunt and place it in the offering plate. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Kristi Love (717-873-4514) with any questions.
