The crabbing season starts 1st December and the best time to catch them is any time from then on through to March. You can go crabbing on a boat or jetty using drop nets or wade into shallow waters with scoop nets. Boats are available for hire locally or you can join a guided tour. You don’t need a licence to catch crabs, however there are seasonal, size and bag limit regulations. Scientists believe that thrombolites are one of the first life forms on earth, dating back approximately 570 million years, producing oxygen that made all subsequent life possible. The Lake Clifton thrombolites are approximately 2,000 years old and the largest in the southern hemisphere.
