The JEWISH HOSPITAL.. slfe^ of St. Louis |216|S. KINGSHIGHWAY ST. LOUIS 10, MO. Vol. 10 -No. fV DECEMBER, 1961 Harvard Professor Scheduled As 15th Annual Tritt Lecturer DR. FINLAND New Machine Tells Blood Loss A $4,000 machine called the Volemetron, which helps to deter- mine a patient's blood loss much more accurately and quickly than other procedures, has been in use at the hospital for the past few months. Blood volume of a patient can be measured in 20 minutes by the "count" recorded on the Voleme- tron by blood specimens taken be- fore and after a small dose of human serum albumin tagged with radioactive iodine. This technique, radio isotope dilution, uses such a small amount of radioactive ma- terial (only 7/10's to 5 microcuries) that blood volume can be mea- sured serially on a patient as many as five times without exposing him to too much radioactivity. During surgery, as well as in medical situations such as shock or bleeding, the speed and safety of the Volemetron aids tremendous- ly in reducing postoperative com- plications and saving lives. The Volemetron was invented by a surgeon at Beth-Israel Hospital, Boston, Mass., with the help of his brother, an electrical engineer. Por- table and extremely simple to oper- ate, the machine is transistorized ready to go the minute it is plugged into an electric outlet. Dr. Maxwell Finland, associate director of the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory and associate professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Mass., will speak on "Antibiotics and Staphylococ- cal Infections" at 8:30 p.m., Janu- ary 25, in Steinberg Auditorium. Dr. Finland will deliver the Fif- teenth Jack H. Tritt Memorial Lecture. The Tritt lectures are given annually in memory of a former intern and resident who died suddenly in 1941 at the age of 31. Dr. Finland received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and progressed from intern to Chief of IV Medical Service at Boston City Hospital. He is the author of numerous papers dealing with infectious diseases and their treatment. He is a member of many medical and scientific socie- ties as well as various governmental committees. Members of the Jack Tritt Mem- orial Lecture Committee are: Doc- tors Ben H. Senturia, chairman, Alfred Goldman, Sam Schneider, and Samuel D. Soule. Child Unit Gets Grant A three-year $36,000.00 grant has been awarded to the hospital by the Children's Besearch Founda- tion to support research in the Ellen Steinberg Department of Child Psychiatry. The grant will support the work of a psychiatrist, psychologist, and sociologist on ward and clinical research problems, Dr. Naomi Bae Grant, clinical director of the de- partment, said. The department, designed for in- tensive treatment of emotionally disturbed children, was opened in 1958. The Children's Besearch Founda- tion, a St. Louis charitable organ- ization, was created "to preserve, protect and improve the mental and physical welfare of infants and children." More than 1,000 employees of the hospital, including student nurses and house staff members, are invited to the annual Em- ployees' Holiday Party Tuesday, December 19, in the main dining room.
A buffet-type dinner as well as eggnog will be served from 3 to 6 p.m.
The party is being held in the main dining room as a result of questionnaires completed by party guests last year indicating that guests needed more room in which to enjoy their dinner.
Members of the party committee are: Bo Axelrod, Mrs. Fern Stewart, Miss Marjorie Boulton, Miss Sally Pugh, George Home, Mrs. Beulah Sanders, and Bobert Bubright, chairman.

Health Plan
Wins Award The St. Louis Community Health
Plan, developed by the Jewish Fed- eration of St. Louis, was the recipi- ent recently of the ninth annual William J. Shroder Memorial Award from the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds.
Jewish Hospital, around which the health plan revolves, was sin- gled out for praise.
An article in the St. Louis Light, publication of the Jewish Federa- tion here, saluted the hospital as "a community health center com- bining the highest standards of medical education and research, of preventive medicine and commu- nity education."

Institute Set A one-week institute on rehabili-
tation nursing will be held at the hospital next February 5 through 9. The session will be limited to about 50 graduate nurses.
Dr. Donald Rose, professor and chairman of the department of physical medicine and rehabilita- tion, University of Kansas Medical School, will be on the faculty which will include members of the hos- pital's rehabilitation team and med- ical specialists.
In addition to the institute, course participants will be offered an optional week of actual patient care experience in the rehabilita- tion division sometime later in 1962.
Coordinating plans for the insti- tute are Robert Hickok, coordina- tor of the rehabilitation division, and Mrs. Fern Stewart, supervisor and instructor in rehabilitation nursing. Sponsoring the event are the rehabilitation division and nursing service.
Health Award (Continued from Page 1)
"As long ago as March 1946, the Jewish Federation of St. Louis be- gan the process of study which cul- minated in December 1950 with the final report of the Federation's Health Planning Committee. This in turn led to the reorganization of our community health services, a reorganization which created a great institution — the Jewish Hos- pital."
The Shroder Award also recog- nized the valuable services of the Jewish Center for the Aged, which coordinates its medical care with the hospital.

Fund Drive
Hits New High The $12,950 raised this fall by
employees of Jewish Hospital was the largest gift ever given by any St. Louis hospital to the United Fund. The 1961 campaign total ex- ceeded by $8,285 the amount raised by hospital employees here in 1960.
More than 120 employees served as team captains and division leaders in the two-week drive here. Nearly 97 per cent of our 1,000 employees made payroll or cash contributions.
With the response of Jewish and other hospitals who achieved their Fair Share quotas, the United Fund hospital division was the first to exceed its 1961 quota. Dr. David Littauer is division chairman.
One United Fund official said: "We feel that Jewish Hospital's ac- complishment was a contributing factor in the success of other hos- pital campaigns."
Needless to say, a hearty thanks and congratulations are due all who contributed and all who worked on this gigantic enterprise to make St. Louis a healthier and better place in which to live.
•H Mrs. Shirley Smith, dietary, points out the "temperature" to Mrs. Fran Stovall, personnel.
Wanted: Radios
Table-model radios, maximum size 15" x 10", in good working order, are needed in the hospital's rehabilitation division for use by patients. Persons interested in do- nating radios should contact Mr. Robert Rubright, FO. 7-8080, Sta. 451.
Salty at only an ox-sailor can bo, Earl Huff, dietary baker, has added salt-free pastry and cookies to the list of low-sodium foods he prepares for special diet patients.
Miss Tory McKee, Florissant freshman, plays the patient in a demonstration during the second annual Freshman Show Me Day, held in November for some 110 high school senior friends of nursing school freshmen. Applying the gentle massage to Miss McKee is Miss Roberta Moss, freshman from Maplewood, while student council president Miss Joyce Enloe, senior from Jefferson City, looks on at her left.
Fund Helps Needy Patients Nine needy patients have bene-
fited from special services provided by the Beth El Congregation of Flat River, Mo., Assistance Fund, a financial summary indicates. The fund was established by congrega- tion leaders in early 1960 with pro- ceeds from the sale of the syna- gogue.
A summary of expenditures shows that three patients received round-trip taxi trips to and from the hospital for treatment, two
others, both in isolation, were pro- vided with television sets, and four received ambulance service.
Two medical staff members, Drs. Bernard DeHovitz and Morris Alex, are trustees of the fund and discuss each expenditure with Miss Mary McKeever, social service di- rector, or one of her assistants.
Persons wishing to contribute to the fund should send checks, pay- able to the fund, in care of Miss McKeever.

MDs Remembered
Myer Brothers Papers Shown Memorabilia of the distinguished
careers of two physician brothers, Drs. Jesse and Max W. Myer, are on display on the hospital's first floor.
Dr. Jesse Myer, who died of leukemia at the age of 41 in 1913, was an internist and former acting director of medical ward service of the old Jewish Hospital on Delmar Blvd. Before his death, he com- pleted a biography of William Beaumont, Army surgeon at Jeffer- son Barracks who won fame as a physiologist.
Dr. Max W. Myer, who died in 1948 at the age of 70, was chief surgeon at the hospital from 1935 to 1946. He occupied the chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Mis- souri University School of Medicine before serving fn World War I. Following the war, he resumed practice in St. Louis, later becom- ing professor of Surgery at St. Louis University School of Medicine. His widow, Mrs. Max Myer, has con- tinued the family tradition with her own fascinating treatment of the Beaumont saga, parts of which have appeared in the Bulletin of the Missouri Historical Society.
Look At A Mosaic Phage!
The abstract design in mosaic tile on the ash tray exhibited by Mrs. Helen Merz at the recent hospital Art Show represents the textbook illustration of a bacterial phage her son is trying to isolate in his research project in viruses at Madison, Wis.
Mrs. Merz is the nursing school's social director.

New Yorker Was First Hellman Workshop Speaker
"Voice Disorders and Vocal Re- habilitation" was the subject of the lecture given by Dr. Friedrich S. Brodnitz, Chief of the Voice and Speech Clinic, Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York City, at the first annual Milton Hellman Workshop Decem- ber 13 in Steinberg Auditorium.
A native of Berlin, Germany, and graduate of University of Berlin Graduate Medical School, Dr. Brod- nitz is the author of Keep Your Voice Healthy and Vocal Rehabili- tation.
The Workshop, conducted in memory of the late Milton Hell- man, will be sponsored annually by the department of otalaryngol- ogy to offer the hospital staff, as
well as staff members of other in- stitutions, opportunities to observe through lectures, research confer- ences, and clinical sessions, tech- niques of specialists in otolaryn- gology and related fields.
Mr. Hellman, who died last June 26 at 75, was an early leader in the Boy Scouts, active in Jewish organizations and the former Com- munity Chest, and served on the boards of YMHA-YWHA, People's Hospital, Social Planning Council, and the Social Health Association. He was instrumental in providing financial assistance to research pro- grams initiated in the department of otolaryngology.
Miss Dolores Biggins, nurse anesthetist at Jewish hospital for six years, was elected president of the Missouri Association of Nurse Anesthetists at its 25th anniversary meeting in St. Louis. She will serve a one-year term.
Miss Ruth Ecklund, staff anes- thetist here for four years, was elected secretary of the group. Miss Dorothy Schmidt, chief nurse anes- thetist, served as president in 1952 and 1953.
Doctors Study Work Systems
Physicians who are members of the medical staff advisory commit- tee to the nursing service embarked December 12 on a four lecture series on industrial engineering in the hospital.
The series is being conducted by Dr. Jay Goldman, director of in- dustrial engineering.
The sessions will cover basic management philosophies, models of hospital work systems, ap- proaches to the design of work systems, and, possibly, actual prob- lem solving.

Construction Work Moves Easterly
Construction work on the new Forest Park Parkway is progress- ing in an easterly direction.
In the next three months, work- men will concentrate their efforts in the area of Forest Park Avenue 200 feet east of Kingshighway. This phase of the project has altered the access to and use of the hospital's ambulance entrance.
By March 1, weather permitting, the entire center median on Forest Park Avenue all the way to Euclid Avenue will be ripped up. No traffic will be permitted on this stretch until project completion.
After March 1, ambulances will be able to turn right from Kings- highway into the short 200-foot stretch of Forest Park Avenue, enabling them to swing into our ambulance entrance.
The parkway will slope upward, reaching ground level about 570 feet east of Kingshighway, a con- struction spokesman said. A traffic light will be installed at Euclid, synchronizing with existing lights all the way to Compton Avenue, where the new parkway will join Market Street.
