  • A year ago we faced the unknown - a new land, a new people and a new home. Now if you would visit uswe would take you all about and show you the beautyspots, the history and the bustle. You would learn as we have, to know the realHaitian behind these lovely smiles. The unknown Is disappearing and our heartsare deeply entwined around a people we have learned to love. And at our homeyouwould feel the warmth of family life and share in the laughterand tears, thesweat ofwork andthejoy ofrestat day's end.God has blessed ouryear in everyrespect and we are grateful.Thewalls of our first building are now complete and ready for the roof. Water isflowing from our well; our projects have made good strides and our childrengrow well. Old friends and new have shared our vision and plunged in to helpwhile our family has made individual contributions and sacrifices. Already1979 has brought some exiciting experiencesand holds great promise. The people wait...opportunity is here.Thank you for the great part you have had in making this anniversary successful.

OUR NEEDSIn our last issue we mentioned needing a generator and funds to pay thebalance of ourwater drilling. We rejoice in telling you that the bill is paid and$5000.00 has been promised for the generator. Please join us in our thanks andpraise to the Lord.Plumbing, electrical wiring and a roof are our next big needs. Sometimes theneeds look insurmountable. But listen with us to what the Scripture says, Heis able to doexceeding abundantly above all that we askor think... So, nothingis really insurmountable - nothing too hard for ourGod...for us orfor you!

Let us have faith and trust Him.

  • "Then

    shall

    No man is an island.

Each of us in turn needs a helping hand, an understanding heart, comfort toallay our fears. That is why Jesus commanded us to care about our brother. Hegaveus a parableof a good Samaritan. And knowing that would not be enoughto open every man's eyes, he broke through with stronger words, "Depart fromme! if we have not done these things, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick andthose in prison.

Must we come to the Master empyhanded?

    I was sickand yevisited me.

  • No, the modern world's missionaries have made an open door for you towalk the Master's way.

Christlanviile needs drugs, funds for x-rays, and particularly a buildingfor more efficient service to those in need.

Above is Shirley making her rounds from village to village in closeproximity to Christlanviile. She is efficient, kind, generous. With $2,800.00 in our clinic building fund we are making plans for thefoundation. And by faith in our loving Heavenly Father whom we knowcares about these little ones, we will see every need met.

Dr. Morris Schwartz of Glenham, N.Y., and old friend of the Hergets whilethey were still in Jamaica has been generously donating drugs for thepast year. Now he has spent a week with us checking our future needsand advising Shirley in techniques. It was easy to ask one so eager to helpand so competant, to be our Medical Advisor. We welcome him to ourChristianviile Family. In recent weeks we have been finding a high percentage of tuberculosis.Drugs are now available that will cure this dreaded disease but there isstill a need for $4.00 for each x-ray. Our goal for the next 12 months is tox-ray 250 people. By that time we hopefully will have our building and ourown x-ray machine. We need your prayers.

This is why there is a surplus foods program to supplement the diet of thosewho are lacking basic nutritional needs. At Christianville we have established a nutritional center where some 350children are now receiving supplements to their diet each week. It has become afun time for everybody. In the top picture you see the local policeman whooffers his services in helping to keep the crowd lined up, and Leona Gorman ofCookson Hills Orphanage who helps dish out. Leona and her husband Ralphare in Haiti for three months building a clinic in Port-au-Prince in connectionwith their orphanage. Our fellowsnip has been rich.Even the boys help. Elleston and David are loading the bags of food into the vanwhile the other boys are preparing for their usual work day on the buildings atChristianville. Our supplemental foods come through the organisation Care. There is soy beanoil, soy corn and soy wheat flour, dried milk and bulgur. The people expresstheir gratitude in work and in a general helpful attitude.

    WHERE DIDYOU

    GET YOUREDUCATION?

Now that raises a long elastic discussion. For some of you it wasthe one room school house when boys wore knickers and carried alunch pail and their books strapped with a good ole piece ofcowhide. For others it was a good foundation in modern schoolswith ample class-rooms for each grade. Some of you can tell of life in great universities and others in small colleges. And still many have made great contributions tolife without a full high school educationWhy this discussion? It centers around ourinterest in ourown boys. Each one is a bright promising youngman. Each one deserves all that we can do toward his education so that at manhoodhe might be fully equiped. Do you beleive this? We want to know and would begrateful to you for your interest and comments. At the moment our greatest educational responsibility concerns Wayne and Robert.Wayne graduates from high school in June of this yearand Robert is due to graduatenext year. Their native language is English. As yet they have not been able to graspenough French to assure them of a good education after high school here in Haiti. Wefeel they should have the opportunity of American education. Friends who havevisited us here in Haiti have come to realize the potentials of Wayne and Robert andareanxious forthem to go to college inthe U.S. However, this is an expensive plan. Itis expensive foryou to send yourchild to college, too. But you have the joy and satisfaction of seeing those kids get out and make something of their lives. Robert wantsto play professional football - adream he has had since earlychildhood. He sees himself as aChristian leader in sports. Wayneisa scholar...not really sure whathe wants but leans to architecture.

Let's give these kids a chance tomake good.Won't you write us and tell ushow you feel?Want to help?Let's pray together about theirfuture.

(P.S. They both want a year ofBible College first.)

    MUSIC INFUN

At Trinity School, where ouryounger se* of boys attend, music is very important. In fact, itis really fun, Each of our boys islearning a different instrument -either a stringed instrument or ahorn. Practice at home is quitenoisy but the family doesn'tmind. Here you see Derrick withhis teacher. Miss Elizabeth, andhis bass violin. The challengebefore the boys is to be able toplay well enough to go out on thetourist ships and play with theschool orchestra. They are waiting excitedly for that day tocome. Often when we pass thewaterfront down town which isvery near the post office, we seethe tourist ships. They are lovelybig ships out there on that bluewater and would make any boywant to go out for a visit. Wehope they will reach their goal, don't you?

    "...FOR LOVE IS OF GOD"

This quarter we bring to you a love story of Haiti's Christianville. It is far frombeing a total account of the love expressed by both Haitians and Foreigners forHaiti and Christianville. There is no way possible to tell of the scores of helpfuldeeds and words of wisdom given us here in Haiti. Nor is it possible to tell the lovestory in full of the sacrifices made financially by Americans, Canadians, Britonsand Jamaicans. But it is an effort to remind ourselves that the Love of God is realand when it is real it moves the heart to action. Our prayer is that the fullfillment ofthis love will mean life and health and hope for our brothers in this land.

We thank you for standing beside us, encouraging us and helpingus to accomplish this goal of love - a Medical Clinic, a Schoolfor children, Supplementary Food Program, and a haven for the homeless.

We thank you for your prayers and interest. We thank you for understanding the real meaning of love andChristianville's need.

  • LOVE'S ACRES

From the beginning it was love inaction that opened the door forChristianville's 25 acres in the

    beautiful lowlands of Haiti's tro

pical island. President for Life,John Claude Duvalier, gave landand assistance for the establish

ment of this project. Love for missionaries.. or social workers? Oh

no. It was love for his people. Inthis compassion for the needy ofthis vast beautiful land with its

population of nearly six million, the President welcomes sincere

people who are willing to work. Weare grateful to him for opening theway for Christianville and forhelping us. We share his love forHaiti and daily we grow morezealous and enthusiastic in our

labors. Yet, our greatest tritbute isto God who is the author of love. In

His Word He first proved His ownlove for us and then commanded

us to love one another. It is this

love that we all share in the pursuitof this mission.

    LOVE'S COMPASSION

Little Sharla was berely able to cry. Her tiny bodywas covered with mosquito bites from a dampnight in our cane tieid. But God had His Hand onher and had a plan for her life. A farmer on his wayto work heard the little cry and found this preciouslittle life whom someone in sheer desperation hadabandoned. It was not long before Giselle heardthe news and she went quickly to see the littleone. Compassion took her heart... a new heart, forGizelle had given her life to Christ a few weeks

earlier. Although the mother of two children already, and in circumstances no better than others, Gizelle offered to mother the little lamb. The following Sundayshe brought the baby before the congregation and asked for prayers that shemight bring her up to be a healthy lovely Christian.

This is the power of the Gospel... the power of love, for love is God. (See cover picture of Gizelle and Sharla).

    LOVE'S SHARING

CARE, that great organisation that moves surplus foods from the U.S. to othercountries of the world, is responsible for our food program. Here you see some ofour precious Senior Citizens waiting for the day's program to begin. Throughlove and gratitude our hearts are entwined with theirs we belong to each other

    LOVE'S LABOR

    The house that Sam built.

Yes, that is what the little buildingat the side of the hill was dubbed.

And good reasoning it was. SamStreu, one of those specialblessings that come to us in life, began doing volunteer work withour boys on Saturdays a year andmore ago. It was then that Saturdays became not just a work daybut a fun day too. Sam was cheerful and hard working and the boys

    ...a

learned to respond nicely to him. So we decided to build a small house that wouldbe generally useful until our home was completed and then would serve as anapartment for a farm superintendent. It is well built with a bedroom, bathroom andkitchen-living room. Here you see the building under construction. We are thankful for the blessing it has been to our progress. And we are thankful for Sam's contribution. He is at home for the summer in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

    LOVE'S GIFTS

Less and Bess Lumsden came toHaiti last year for a visit and thisyear returned to share GrandmaWaiker's 82nd birthday. But thiswas only a part of their reason forreturning. During the year Lessand Bess had spent much of theirtime working for Christianville ona volunteer basis. They havevisited churches in several statesand have returned to update their

pictures and get news of progress. There is still another reason.

Several years agp they had saved some money and had lost it... their projectfailed. Recently the money was returned to them and they decided to give the entire amount of $5,361.00 to Christianville. A letter followed saying. The money wegave you was the first large sum of money we have ever had to give away and wemay never have any more. As soon as we found out that we were getting it. wedecided that we would give it to you. You see, you are not only our friends; wethink you are most dedicated people we know. You are truly good stewards of whatthe Lord sends to you and we think the Lord gave this to us so that we could give itto you. We marvel at how much you accomplish so we are going to do the best wecan to promote your work.

Less and Bess asked us to report this news to you because they believe whatJesus said,

  • LOVE'S SERVICE

There is just no way possible to tell the entire story of the dedication of God's peoplein making Christianvilie possible. Some friends insist on their giving beinganonymous, quoting the Scripture, Let not your left hand know what your right handdoeth". God bless them... for each of us is used by God in His own wonderful way,Some of our friends pledge regular service and we want to mention them here.

    C. E. Shepard has for the past year travelled among churches as our Promotional Worker, agreeing to a very smallsalary. However, he has since the beginning returned thesalary to Christianvilie, and in addition given personal gifts.God bless you Clarence and Grace for your dedicated service. We commend them for their love for Haiti and its

    people.

Mrs. Blllie Sloderbeck, of Englewood Christian Chruch,Jacksonville, Fla. has taken on the title "Missionary Lady>'for Christianvilie. She has given months of dedicated service in gathering funds and drugs for our Clinic. Her love forHaiti was born when she visited in March and saw the need

and the small beginning we had made toward the project. She broke Ground for the Clinic and returned with great enthusiasm. We are thankful for her efforts in the Jackson

ville area and now for their outreach into other areas. SurelyGod will bless this labor of love.

Dr. Morris Schwartz, Medical advisor for Christianvilie, returned in June for a second work-visit. He is keenly interested in seeing the Clinic make an outstanding contribution ot the medical needs of Christianvilie area. Not onlyhas he contributed heavily with drugs and supplies of allkinds, but he has gained the helpful interest of the RotaryClub in Haiti. Dr. Schwartz plans a return visit to us in lateOctober or November from his home and practice inGlenham, New York. We thank God for his loving service.

  • There will be examination rooms, afully equipped dental room, a pharmacy, treatment room, reception areaand a large waiting room that canalso be used for teaching programs.

So the walls go up - a natural stonebuilding to follow the pattern ofChristianville's construction plan. Bythe time this reaches you, Teen Missions' husky 35 strong team shouldbe working toward completing thebuilding this summer.

  • PROGRESSis the order of our days. Here Jim receives the finalGovernment papers for theownership of Christianville's25 acres, from Mr. LabnerLeroy at the Ministry of Finance. It was a great day a dayof praise for the Lord andthanksgiving.

Our Mission Home is now much nearer completion than this picturereveals. The roof is more than half finished and plastering is complete on one side. Plumbing and electrical conduits are all in and weare hopeful that moving day is not far away... could it be October? It Is a one floor plan for now with an open courtyard for plenty ofoutdoor living. {We could use a volunteer carpenter for a couple ofweeks).

  • LOVE'S MINISTRY

Roosevelt Luxama has been Jim's associateminister and Interpreter at Chrlstlanvllle'schurch. We have received good new/s recentlythat a buildingteam plans to come In September to build Roosevelt a little house atChristlanville so that he can be of greater service. Roosevelt is a quiet, serious anddedicated young man. He has been vi/orklngwith us for over a year.

    OUR VISITORS A BLESSING

What a lovely surprise was in store for us recently! It was the visit of our Brownstown, Indiana church family. Minister ElvIn and wifeBetty Gray, who came on a ship to Cap Haitian. It was a great reunion when thatlovely group came down the gangplank with hugs and kisses and singing. We had awholeday together visiting, sightseeing and sharing our mutual love for the Lord andHis work. But there were other surprises too. Suitcases and boxes and bags of lovelygifts for our whole family were brought from the church -a shower of needed things.Oh, our fellowship was rich and the assurance of Brownstown's care was a great encouragement. We came home rejoicing.

    OTHERS VISITED TOO

In recent months we have had showers of blessings with the visits of friends. In addition to those who are already mentioned in this Evangel the following have been inour home.

H.C. Tenbrook from Clearwater, Fla. He and his wife have been pillars of support forChristianvllle and we thank God for their generous and loving interest.

Everette Cook, Kendallvllle, ind.,; Cliff Hazzard, Denver, Colo., Dr. J. Eisenbud,Brooklyn, N, Y.; Pat Pugh, Jacksonville, Fla. {Sec. for Englewood Christian Chruch),Sammye, Vainosky, Orange Park, Fla., Dr. and Mrs. Bob Underberg, Ft. Myers, Fla.,Reggie and Esther Thomas, Joplin, Mo., and Pete and Eileen Ramsey of Mt. City,Tenn. You might recall that the Ramsey's visited us several times in Jamaica andworked with us there.

There is always room in our house... come and visit and share the joysof our ministrywith us. Seeing Haiti is to love Haiti.

    JESUS LOVES ME

This shy pretty little miss is hiding her -'-'-5^^smile. A moment or two before the cameracaught her she was splashing and beaming | "with smiles in the stream that flows nearby lher little thatched home. There are manysmall streams during the rainy season thatflow throughout the lowlands near Port-au- f'>Prince, for the water comes down off the *mountains and makes its way to the sea. 'This means great fun for the boys and girls Jand it just feels sogood toget wet on these Jscorching hot days. I

In some places the water gathers in quite large pools justdeep enough to for a littleswim. There you see boys and girls all having a great wet time together. It is also thebest place to have a good bath too. And Mothersdon't quarrel about wet clothes for itonly takes a very little while for the sun to dry them out.

Wouldn't you like to join the fun?As soon as we move to Christianville we plan to have regular Bible Classes for theboysand girlsto ted them the sweet storyof Jesus and His love. It is a story that canbe told over and over all of us know that and we never get tired hearing it. We wanteach boyand girl to be able to say Jesus lovesme" and really believeit.

    GRADUATION

Wayne's graduation from High School was an exciting time for all the family. Therewere the usual school functions to attend but unfortunately Daddy had to go alone. Itall happened while Mom was in the hospital. But she was not too sick to give instructions for Daddy &Shirley to make a little party for his school friends. Wayne isstill only 16 and so plans to remain at home for a year helping with Mission work. Hewill be doing University correspondance courses and then plans to go to ChristianCollege next year.

  • SINGING GLORY

It doesn't really matter to eitherHaitians or to Jamaicans or to Ame

ricans that we speak different languages. All we need to know is thatwe are singing praises to God. Andsinging to the glory of God in a worship service is understood by everyone. Here you see Derrick, Byron andDave singing a special number for themorning church service at Christian-ville. They enjoy doing their part forJesus. We still have only a largelovely thatched church building butsomeday hope to have good strongbuilding that will keep us dry andcomfortable..

    THANK YOU

Check those smart looking tennis-shoes that are rolling out of that box! Hey, now,you can tell that they are welcomed when you also check the smiles on our boy'sfaces. There were other surprises in that box too when those fellows dug a littledeeper... jeens and socks for all. Their thanks are to Virginia Dugan's Bible Class inMonroe, Georgia. Don and Virginia Dugan moved to Georgia from Brownston, tnd.where they first learned to love the children of Haiti... and our Jamaican boys. Nowthey are great workers for Christianville.

Our thanks go to all ofyou boys and girlswho with yourteachers and parents

have helped to makea nice home for our 9

    Y.es,-Xhf+stfan Friends,

those Teen Mission kids are here a03li\yand are hard at work on our Clinic anfarm bulIdlngs.

They arrived on June 26th at seven p.m.on a rain-drenched city. The plane wasdue at 10 a.m. making It possible toset up tents before dark. But arrivalat seven was fatal to such plans. You

can guess what happened.' Yes, all 35 ofthem came home with us. Cookie had ahuge pot of spagetti ready and the kidsdevoured it not having had food sincemorning. After prayers they chose various places around the house to Hedown to sleep. There v/as hardly a spotof floor to step on when all were settled down for the night.

By five thirty a.m. two busses came tohelp transport them to Christianvllleand then the fun really started. Thetents went up, the kitchen was organized and things were humming. Thereis a long board outside the makeshiftkitchen with bowls for washing dishesand a big barrel of water from the newwell. This is an improvement over lastyear when we had to haul all of ourdrinking water from Port au Prlncei

By the next morning shovels were flyingblocks were being laid and the work wastackled with great zeal. What of thesunnier? It shows great promise of pro

With ourWavne and Robert and our summer workerPat FIsch, a real team was ready for work. They made a good start on the barn anddid several other jobs In our buildingprojects.

Vte were really proud of their work;andthankful for the sacrifice these kidsmade to come to Haiti. Their nine dayswere truly blessed of the Lord.

    We are thankful...

  • r' ^ r/ no/ f4Teen Missions International is a non-denominationa! organisation designed

to instill in teenagers a concern and vision for world missions. These teenagers also learn the value of work and how it relates to their own Christianlives. This is our second summer to have the blessing of a "working team atChristianville.

"The kids are here again! The cry went up in chorus from our eight boyswhen 35 Teen Mission kids poured into the house at 9 p.m. after a ten hourplane delay. Our boys were deleriously happy. The teenagers were tired, hungry and wet from a soaking rain, but excited. > had a huge "camppot of spagetti ready for them and an hour later they were sound asleep - onthe floors, on couches, beds, cushions and car seats.

Refreshed with the morning light and a good breakfast, they were ready forthe trip to Christianville. After staking out their tents they outfitted the improvised kitchen with their own stove, pots and food and by evening the firstcooked meal was served.

Six wonderful weeks later the Team looked on their work, proud and happyto know that they had contributed to the goal of Christianville, to bring healthand sustanance to those in need. The Clinic walls were all up and ready for theroof, the Barn was ready for its roof. Grow Boxes were cleared and replanted, fence posts were put in around the barn and house, and the public drinkingfountain was completed.

There were five leaders and 30 teenagers. Teen Missions requires that eachof the teenagers contribute $100.00 of their own funds toward the project. TheTeam provided their own food and transportation so that Christianville wouldnot be burdened with any expense while they were on the job.

Following are pictures that will help you see what Teen Missions has meantto Christianville. Truly this is a matter of Faith... with works!

Therehad been ups and downs, the sick tent had been

used for various tummy aliments but all in all the Lord had blessed and theteens werehappy and thankful for their missionaryventure. You will see woveninto the story the progress of Christianville.

    IWANTTO RETURN

Hal Huffman of Dixon, Illinois, one of the Team expressed his love for Haitiright from the first. Hal is 18 and graduated from high school with the honor ofbeing chosen most likely to succeed. We found out why this choicewas made.Hal was a most dedicated worker, eager to please and never too tired to do thelast jobof theday. Shortly afterhe began working Hal told us thathewould liketo return andgive a year'swork toChristianville. We agreed to pray about itandtalk with him in two week's time. Hal was determined and his work proved it.Hal is now in the U.S.A. raising support and preparing to return. By the timethis reaches you Hal should be back on the job working with our Wayne andpreparing for the family move hopefully by December.

  • U.S.A.I.D. PROVIDES FUNDS FOR WATER WELL

After finding a baautifui spring on Christianville's land we found also thatthe people in our area were using it almost exclusively for their drinking needs. We had it tested and found it to be seriously poluted. Then we realized thathere was one of the reasons for so much ill helath in the area.

We completed the project of drilling for good water and then set a goal for apublic water fountain.

Here you see the teen kids at work... first the foundations and then thefinished job with our neighbors drawing water. This should be a great boon tobetter health in our community. There are four automatic turn off faucets andthe water comes from the large tank underneath our house farther up the hill.

We are grateful to the United States A.I.D. program for contributing $3000.00toward the drilling of the well. Their interest and help in Christianville's goal isdeeply appreciated.

  • TRIBUTE

John Joseph was seriously ill with tuberculosis when we first knew him atChristianville. He was a young man and wanted to live. When we first brought themessage of salvation to John, he responded eagerly and was the first to complete hisobedience to God in baptism. Hereyou see himas he came up out of the water beinggreeted by his friends and well wishers. John was a faithful as he could be thoseearly months of his new life. But gradually his illness took its toll. In July John laiddown his sick and pain racked body and put on a new one that God had promisedhim. He passed from life unto life everlasting because he believed and obeyed God.This is the victory of the Gospel!

    GIFT FROM MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE

Robert and Wayne were excitedabout the Ministry of Agriculture's gift of a tractorandwagon for Christianville. It is a small machine but very powerful. They have donea considerable amount of plowing and are now ready for all planting. The machinehas more than eight attachments including a water-pump and a planter. We aregrateful for Government's continual help.

    Everybody works at Christianville!

A full work crew of Haitians are building ourmission fiome.

But our boys help too. Wayne and Frankiestayed on at Christianville after TeenMissions left. They are laying blocks for thework shop behind the mission house andare living out there on the property in the little house that Sam built. In thedaysDaddycomes and brings the smaller boys since

they are on holidays from school. The boys enjoy pushing the wheelbarrowwith rocks and sand and they help nicely in every job they are called to do.Sometimes Daddy gives them "time out" and they go down to the spring tosearch for fish.

Here you see David building his muscle^). One of these fine days we all hopeto be livingat Christianville where we can be of greater help to our neighbors. But in the meantime there is lots of work to be done. Saturdays are busy forMom. She runs the food distribution and the little boys help her fill the bowlsand pour the oil into bottles. Byron calls the numbers so the people come orderly for their food gifts. Work is hard at Christianville but it is fun too. And ex-pecially when you know there are sandwiches and cool lemonade waiting foryou in the little house.

THANK YOU boys ans girls foryour loving letters. We are veryhappy to hear from you and toknow that you care about usand about our work in Haiti.Thank you for your prayers andfor your gifts. We are verythankful that you are ourfriends.

o/nd 'TUpt {yrv^Boys and girls, this is a very special messageto us from the Word of God. It means that when

we read and know what God wants us to do. we

must do it. You see in this Evangel how American young people have come way out here toHaiti to do God's will in helping others. Godwants you to help others too for we must loveothers just as we love ourselves. He wants usto obey in all things that He has commandedus. We are all God's children and whether little

or big. He expects us to obey Him. This is whatwe are teaching our boys here and also our little Haitian friends.

Our boys made lots of nice friends this summer. Little boys always like big friendsand so they really enjoyed all the special attention they got from the Teenagers. Theywere eager to help carry buckets of water and buckets of cement for the girls Andthey learned many lovely choruses just listening to the group sing while they worked. The first week after goodbyes were said Ihe letter writing began and now they askdaily. "Is there any ami I for me?"

Did you know that we speak a different language in Haiti then youspeak? Our boys are learning veryquikly now and can chat away like little parrots with their friends at Chris-tianville. You would probably laugh ifyou could hear them for you wouldn'tunderstand a word they were saying. One Sunday our minister Roosevelt'as sick and Daddy wanted to

preach. Wayne said, "Dad. I will interpret for you". And he did! He did verywell and Daddy was proud of thelovely morning worship hour they hadwith Christianville folks. We are thankful forour boys who are growing to befine young missionaries.Last Evangel we told you aboutWayne's graduation but we did nothave a picture to show you. Here yousee him at the end of the ceremony.

    MISSION PROGRESS - JULY 1979AUG 1 6 1979

It was a sad farewell as the Teen Mission Bus pulled away with shouts andtears and hankies waving.. It, had been a beautiful six weeks. The insidewalls of the clinic ar-e all up and the building is ready for the roof| thebarn is ready for its roof, the public water fountain is completed and inuse and many smaller joba are finished# Our sadness soon lifted as wepraised the Lord for blessing us with such great strides forward.

There were Spiritual blessings t;oo p more baptisma and well attendedservices. One of the Teen Missions Team, Hal, dedicated a year of his lifeto Christianville and plans to return to us within a month. We are trulythankful for this dedicated life.

CHRISTlANVlIii:: MISSION DEi4ANDS GREAT FAITH I

The Lord has laid upon our hearts a huge project at Christianville andthus far we rejoice in His meeting every need.

But every now and then a real testing time comes. At the moment we havejust barely enough money to do the last section of our house roof. Thelarge center part was poured this past week.

After that we can only move ahead as God provides.

WONT^YOU PLEASE PRAY WITH US IN THIS ONE LAST FINANCIAL PUSH THAT WILLGET US INTO OUR NEW HOUSE? We will need about $6000.00.

Do you realize what a great thing has been done thus far? We will be ableto live in our home with no rent or mortgage payments to make!

    THANK-YOU

We are most grateful for your gift this month. We are grateful for whatyou have done to bring us this far. Once again the mails have failed usand we still lack a report from June and we can*t get receipts to youwithout it. We are waiting now for a copy.

The picture above gives you an idea of our house, courtyard. It is a U shaped building, one story,in your prayers.

All rooms open onto aPlease keep our needs

The Evangel should be out this week after its delay due to Carol's illness. She has just passed the crucial three month blood test and is rejoicingthat it was excellent. Thanks again for your prayers. God bless you all.

  • BLCSS O LORD OUR EFFORTS

    September 1979

    Dear Friends in Christ, OG"^A\979

'"Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer, thou shalt cry andHe shall say, here I am...and the Lord shall guide you continually."

Isaiah 58: 9, 11How beautiful and reassuring are the words of God!

We called and God answered. Yes, many times this past month, HURRICANEDAVID PASSED US BY. We live in a strong house and so were not too concernedabout ourselves, but oh, to look about us and see what a hurricane would havedone to our people who already have nothing but bare straw shacks to live in,was truly frightening. How we prayed! And the warmth and care that youshowed for us during this time is deeply appreciated. Thank you all.

The Lord led us safely through a serious financial bind in early Septembertoo and allowed our credit to be honored. We want so much to relate well inthis country as Christians..Spiritually, morally, financially...and God hasblessed and cared for us in this.

Sam Streu, our great friend of last year who donated much volunteer labor hasreturned from Canada to volunteer his labor full time with us. Sam is a builder and jack of many trades, a fine Christian and a lover of children. Heplans to remain with us until the Lord leads him otherwise. Praise the Lord! His blessings never cease.

    MAIL PROBLEMS

Yes, there are problems in the work here - we must expect that. Most of thetime we can just pray and praise anyhow. But mail problems involve you too.Julia Wheeler sends a monthly report of our receipts enclosing the lettersyou send to her. This year five of the ten reports she has sent have not arrived. We are told that mails are very unsafe here and letters are stolen withwith the hope of finding money. We have now received copies of the last threethat were lost and receipts are enclosed along with our apologies and lovinggratitude. But alas, the letters can not be answered - they are a total loss. So, if you have written and not had an answer, please do write again and wewill hurry off an answer to you. From now on we are asking Julia to registerher^ejjorts to us with the hope that this will be safer. The money is always.safeOb^^posited in the U.S. If you want to get important messages to us, you

too, could use registered mail..directly to us in Haiti.

Once again we want to express our deep gratitude to youfor standing with us in prayers and gifts. We see goodthings happening for Christ here and even though ourhouse has taken longer than we had thought, we shouldbe living there by December. You can imagine how excited the boys are getting. And they are working hardtoo, to help. God bless you all!H

l^at a busy month this has been! Building has been going ahead rapidly but it hastaken second place to the activities of our ministry to the people of Christlanvllle.Kow we love this work!

Church services have been lovely and a vzarm friendly atmosphere prevails amongour people. They are seeking and learning of the Saviour and are becoming moreand more steady with their attendance. Now they are helping one another. Eachweek they share in an offering to help a needy brother or sister. One time itis help toward a hospital bill. Another time it is help for the building of abrother's house. Yes, the Spirit of love and sharing is permeating our fellowshipand we thank God for this.

There was progress in our medical outreach this month too, as PoctorSchwartz from Uew York came again to help. Every day for seven dayswe labored among the sick and needy, under shelters, under trees, atthe roadside. There were vltimins for the children, injections forserious illnesses and medicines for many ailments. Hundreds of peoplecame for help and no one was turned away.

Englewood Church in Jacksonville, Fla.shipped us 4 huge crates of rich nutriment and we poured it out by the gallonsto hundreds of children. Oh, whatblessedness, what thanksgiving we

    t I

felt in our own hearts at being ableto help In this way. Our supply shouldlast another month and then we plan to follow?it with the powdered milk from CARE. Our weeklydistribution of whole grain food, oil and flour hasbeen a good help too.

The people know that we understand their needs and are trying to help and itshows in their acceptance of us. vrhen we stop in the river to wash our vanthere are many hands to help. Once we did it alone while they watched. And nowwe find it easier to help them with Spiritual things. Yes, we are making Inroadsto the core of their hearts..tlie spot where only love can really help.

Thank you for sharing with us...for feeling your brother's need and for caring.Wc are so very grateful to you. Without you we could do nothing. So this is yourwork, your ministry to the needy..,as we labor together. Remember the words ofJesus:

TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD G0

It is difficult to say which part of our work in Haiti is the most rewarding orthe most exciting. This quarter we want to remind you about the family life ofour nine Jamaican sons which we brought with us to this island nearly twoyears ago. It truly has been both exciting and rewarding and.perhaps becausefamily life goes on and on, even when the day's work is done. When the toolsare put away and the people go to their homes after church services or afterfood distribution or medical treatments, family life goes on. There is a gooddinner and family talk and then a bit of TV before family prayers and Biblestudy. There is laughter and there are tears fun and work and all goods things.God has smiled upon us and blessed the growth of our children with healthybodies and happy minds. We invite you now to look in our family life and sharea little of our joy. We feel your love and prayers... like a warm blanket about us.You have helped to make our family a reality. Thank you... we are deeplygrateful.

    ONCE MORE OUR NEW ADDRESS

Not only did the Wheelers move into their new home and want us to use aP.O. Box but now the zip code for that area has been changed. We hope thiswill be our permanent address:

  • THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF CHILDREN

Now, who wouldn't be proud of a family like this! See if you can pick themout... the mischief guy, the eager beaver, the serious man, the "flowers forMommy guy, and "Daddy's Go-For. Each one is there with his definite traitbut all have a touch of all these things. They are a lovable gang, growing upnicely in the Christian way of life. From left to right you see Byron, David,Elleston, Derrick and Darren. David has been watching the carpenters withgreat zeal lately and to his delight often gets to use the hammer and level.Darren is learning block-laying from Wayne. We see Byron following Frankieand the cows while Elleston often begs to remain home with Grandma on workdays at the property. Derrick is a patient watchman around the tools andvaluables and is always ready with a smile to run errands.

But as soon as our move to Christianville is completed, there will be littletime for anything on week days except school work and travel. We will be just15 miles from dowtown Port au Prince and a lovely 15 miles at that. At least 12miles of the road is along the lovely seaside and green countryside. God hasblessed us with a good road as well. And He has blessed us with a preciousfamily - our nine Jamaican sons. We are your missionary family to Haiti.Followour EVANGEL and know us a bit better as we grow and work in Haiti.

  • 1' DEMISE AND JIM HAYESJH RECRUlTSTOCHRiSTIANVILLE

' Our medical work needs leadership and staf-fing. Denise Hayes spent much of her life in theRodhesian mission field with her parents. Dr.and Mrs Dennis Pruitt. Now that she has com-

plated her taining in the Nursing field, Denise

with her husband have dedicated themselves to a year of service with Christian-villeClinic. They plan lo lead in the completion of our building (Jim Hayes is a carpenter) and the organisation of the medical work. Shirley Peace has resignedfrom Chnstianville Clinic and from all medical work. Our prayers and best wishesfollow her. The Hayes hope to complete their plans to arrive in Haiti by February. Please rememberthem in prayer.

    YOU WILL REMEMBER SAM

Yes, some of you met him personally. Others will remember reading of his contribution of voluntary services all through 1978 and into 1979. Sam comes fromEdmonton, Alberta, Canada and has dedicated his life to serving the Lordwherever God calls him. After being in Haiti for about a year. Sam visited his home

for six months. During this time our invitationto Sam to return and help us was working onhis heart. He felt that God wanted him to return

and serve Him again in Haiti. This time he saidhe would devote his full time with us until the

Lord leads him otherwise. Sam is a great blessing to our work for not only is Sam a goodbuilder and craftsman but he is a lover of

children and a fine Christian. His sunny dispo- Tsition is a joy to all. Our most grateful thanksto Sam for his voluntary Christian service.

  • Our new home is almost finished. We hope to be able to begin moving by earlyDecember and this means that we should have our first Christmas there this year.Truly it is a Christmas present for all of us. There have been long hard months ofwork for our contractor has allowed us to do whatever we could so as to keepdown expenses. Now we are painting and Sam is hanging doors.

The house, so nicely built with ample room, will become a home when ourboisterous family of healthy boys move in. And this is what we have looked forward to for so long. There will be a nice big office to house the workshop for allthe projects ahead of us, and extra room for a staff member, a small family roomfor fun and for prayers, a comgined dining room-living room, bedrooms and kitchen. Yes, there is a guest room too, so plan your trip down to visit Christian-villa.

Our move in December means that all along you have beautifully responded toour needs for building funds. It also means there will be a last big bill from thehardware store in December which we are trusting God for. But when it is finishedwe can rejoice in knowing there will be no rent or mortgage payments. Praise theLord! Then we will be able to concentrate on completing our clinic, school andchapel.

We want you to join with us in thanksgiving to the Lord for His blessingsthroughout 1979. And won't you join with us too, in a December prayer of house-warming? A prayer that will include asking God for wisdom and guidance for thefuture of this work.

May God bless you with a most happy and blessed Christmas and a beautifulnew year.

    FOOD DISTRIBUTION

During October we made a concentrated effort to reach hundreds of people inthe Christianvllie area with medical assistance. Our efforts were wonderfullyrewarded. Dr. Morris Schwartz made his third visit to us this year and broughtsupplies of drugs to supplement what we already had. . Daily we went togetherdrawing crowdsin several differant areas. In addition to the medical help given,we wefe able to offer nutriment to several hundred children daily for a weel^. Oh,how great it was to pour out that rich goodness to those precious children! Andafter a big cup of nutriment came a vitimin tablet. This is a program that we arefollowing up on a weekly basis now and with a new medical program geared forDecember. We hope to continue the clinic building in January. The Lord is notslack concerning His promises... There should be some really good news aboutthe medical work in our next Evangel.

Fellowship on Sunday mornings after worship hour is a precious time, it is here thatbarriers are broken down and love takes root. We share joys over tiny things andsorrows over big things. Births and deaths are both common visitors and we findpeace and comfort in our own iives in being able to share with others in their need.

    TEAMWORK

Even when one remains at home, the team is stiii at work. Paul and Janie Fontanotwere the Teen Missions leaders last summer. It was then that he pledged to return fortwo months and do voluntary work. Janie would have to remain at home with her jobin order to keep finances going. Paul at the moment is erecting the roof on our barnand sleeping quarters for our farm-hand. The Lord has certainly blessed us but ourvolunteers claim that the biggest blessing is theirs. God bless you always Paul andJanie!

    BROWNSTOWNTEAM

A film with pictures of our three volunteers from Brownstown, Ind., a teamarranged by Elvin and Betty Gray, were unfortunately destroyed. But the work thatthese fine fellows did will last for a long future. Armed with pick and shovels they

made their contribution. Marty..^1 I r Carmer and John Lantz came

    with Ron Vance, student at

    Cincinnati Bible Seminary.

    In November John and Doris

Waddell, ministering in Alta-mont Springs, Fla. visited withus and shared our work and

  • SPEAKING FRENCH

Each day that passes our boys find it easier tounderstand their French speaking friends. Athome sometimes our supper hour is a mass ofconfusion for there are two languages going onat the same time. It is great fun. At church theysing from their French Hymn Books and learnScripture. John 3:16 was the first verse theylearned in French. But they also keep up theirEnglish language lessons as well and reciteScripture verses in English on the way toschool. Isn't it wonderful that Jesus can un

derstand all of the children of the world whenthey pray no matter what language they speak!

And He loves them all too, and right here inHaiti He loves our beautiful Haitian childrenand our Jamaican children just the same. Andwe are glad that you love them too. Thank youfor helping us to help them.

Christmas will soon be here and since the boysenjoy the game Monopoly so much, we wouldlike to get them a set in French. It would be funand also would help them to practice theirlanguage.

    FRIENDS AT CHRISTIANVILLE

The children at Christianville know that the

time is drawing very near when the family willbe moving close to them. They will enjoyhaving our boys with them not only at churchbut at play times too. Robert will want toorganize a Junior Football team and we hope tobegin Bible classes early in the new year. Also, plans are underway for the beginning ofour school building in the new year. Won't it be ^nice to know that many of these little children ^will be able to have a good school right near 'their homes? Please pray that our family maybe good missionaries and be able to really helpour new friends. Helping one another is God's
