Coeur d'Haiti FEBRUARY 1987 Haiti Christianville Outreach Evangelism Unto Rural • Haiti Dear Friends in Christ, For the past two years, during December and January, the church at Ticousin has held a revival. This year, with more baptized members, and a nucleus of those who have grown spiritually, an extra effort was made by all to really reach out in the community surrounding the church, Members visited homes and spoke to friends. The attendance was high the first night of the revival. So many lifted up their voice in song that the church could be heard from miles around. The second night more came; some to see what was going on, and others with a true desire to learn more about the Lord Jesus, Keeping an attendance record was diff icult! The church was so crowded that many could find standing room only, both inside and outside the shelter. It is estimated that the highest attendance was 350 to AGO people one night! The revival put the church off on a positive foot for 1987. Many made decisions to leam more about Christ Jesus, and the church leaders are following up on these people. As a result, three people have been baptized. Many more are considering making a decision. We would appreciate your prayers in their behalf! AN ALL OUT EFFORT TO REACH OUR WORLD! Finally, he gave into the struggle and went forward during the invita tion. He told the church how voodoo had a strong hold on his life. He now wanted to do away with the false gods and leam to worship Christ. Levi left the church and went home to take out all the voodoo idols and instruments of worship. He came back to the church with a bottle of white liquid. He told how the witchdoctor had sold it to him to keep the evil spirits from "eating" him. With great emotion and sincerity, Levi broke the bottle and announced his trust in Christ to keep him from harm. Because of his decision, his wife took their two child ren and left him the next day. There are several young Christian men being trained as leaders in the church. They too, are faced with similar struggles. One young man, Jonel, told the church of an agreement he made with his cousin, who is also a member of the church. • A LOVELY QUIET SPOT

The porch for our new Dental Clinic given by FAME for the children of Haiti, provides a lovely quiet spot for a noonday class for our "12 disciples". These 12 boyshave expressed a keen interest for leadership in Christianvllle's outreach. Most ofthem are in the Graduating Class for this year. We are still not sure if they willpass since school life last year was radically interrupted with the revolution andall of Haiti's schools suffered set-backs. But this does not deter the spirits ofthese young men. They are keen "servants", eager to be of use in every area ofservice. Early on Sunday mornings you will find them tidying the front yard of thechurch, moving benches for Sunday School, teaching younger children, travellingout with the preachers to the Mountain and Jean Jean churches, or helping withChildren's Church. Each one is useful in some way ... and happily useful, at that.

A TRADE SCHOOL TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL

Here is the potential we need for Christianville's future... young men who could bethe teachers we need, the supervisors in farm work, the high quality workers inclinics, nutrition program, in craft work. All of these boys are dedicated Christiansyet still studying and struggling to be leaders who will be pleasing to God. Theirteacher, David Marcelin (extreme left) has been their youtti minister for four yearsand is now Minister for the Jean Jean church. The boys are eager for their turn togo with David to help in the services at Jean Jean.

Recently five of our church young people including three of this group went onfoot to the Mountain Church to hold another evangelistic meeting for five days. Atthe end of their time the people begged them to stay for another week for they enjoyed the boys and their preaching so much. But our young people must have ameans of livelihood.

This most urgent and challenging need Is now at our heart's door. We must respond to it. And the answer can be realized in expanding the classes we havealready begun... in agriculture, animal husbandry, arts and crafts, tailoring, sewingand others. We have decided to make a serious start this summer and then

hopefully build into our program a trade school. Thus we will lay the foundationfor trades and evangelism to go hand in hand. And in this we will keep the commission of Jesus, "go ye into all the world...". Our goal is not to hire ready-madepreachers. We are raising our own true servants who like the great Apostle Paulwill "make tents" and spread the Gospel.

  • A "TURNED-ON" TEAM !

Behind the teenage boys now turning into young men is a small but strong groupof leaders. Each Monday night for well over a year now, we have held a meetingwith our "team", planning, reporting, praying, studying to improve ourevangelistic outreach.

    Here you see our team.

Left to right front row are two brothers, Henry Claude Joseph assistant at JeanJean and Arvelt teaching the mens' class at Christianvllle and preaching once amonth at Grassier; Robinson Joseph, Minister for Jean Jean, Sam Streu co-workerin every area, Lucien Dorcelin, Minister for Christianville, and Stewart Kelly, FarmManager. Sandy and Carol are also a part of the group.

Together the team is making plans to start a fourth church inanother needy area. Our churches are growing. Christianville averagesjust over 300 while the Mt. Church and Jean Jean areboth running close to 100 on Sundays. Weddings andbaptisms are frequent and teaching classes are heldregularly in several areas. We covet your prayers !

    OUR "TIMOTHY"

In the month of May Jerome Prlnston, our Haitian"Timothy" graduated with a degree in Ministry atJohnson BibleCollege after four wonderful years. Hehas spent his summers working here at Christianvilleand again this year he will lead our VBS. Now Jeromedesires to gain his Master's degree in ChristianEducation hoping to do it in a year and a half. InAugust he will be married to a lovely Haitian girl hemet.in New York and together they plan to assume, the leadership in Christian Education here with us.We are very proud of the work he did at Johnson aswell as his work in Music at the University of Tenn.We look forward eagerly to his final return to Christianville hopefully by December 1988. If you wouldlike to include a gift of encouragement to Jeromealong with your next gift to Christianville, he wouldbe very grateful.

  • ANOTHER GREAT VISIT

Dr. Alan Handt has visited and worked with us on several occasions during thepast five years. His visit this spring has been the most rewarding yet. Dr. Handt isnot only one of America's outstanding Doctors but he is versatile in many areas. One day you would see him in the Clinic with Sandy, after clinic you could see himon the ground under the truck repairing brakes while still another time he.wouldbe teaching classes in Bible lessons or preaching in the church.

His wife Debbie, also a Doctor, kept herself busy in the clinic, at the sewingmachine, just being helpful at any task while she kept an eye on their 8 year olddaughter. We are praying for a return visit from them. And hopefully for a muchlonger period.

f^eanwhiie we are thankful for their help and encouragement. They have been particularly helpful with the medical needs of our family.

    MEET PAUL AND RACHEL RONK

Help is on the way ! While in Collegeat Johnson, Jerome met a fine youngcouple who were interested in beingmissionaries and before they couldrealize it they were flying to Haiti tolook over the needs here. Paul has hisdegree in the Ministry but desires touse his life as a mission farmer, preaching on Sundays. Paul is aseasoned famer from his boyhooddays and is experienced in manyareas of farm life. He has also had experience in management and wasvery successful in this when he left itto study at Johnson.

Rachel and Paul both fell In love withChristianville and we with them ! Nowthey have returned to raise theirfunds to join us by the latest October f s; < ' 1'1st. and with them will come their 10 'SV;!month old baby ! ^ |i

  • STEPS TO THE FUTURE

Midnight oil on the book work, sweat and toil on the ground, decisions, decisions, trucking, shipping, bargaining for prices... all of these together form the foundation and growth of our new school building. Yes, these are steps building stepsto the future for many many boys and girls. Our friends might say we started withnothing. True it was, we had no money. But we had the most valuable asset FAITH !

For the WORD says that "without FAITH it is impossible to please God. Daily weare proving the promiseof God that Hewouldmeet everyneed. And the building isexciting. The roof is finished andnow the walls are being closedin. Acontainer ofsupplies, electrical, plumbing, doors, etc. is arriving from Miami. First ChristianChurch in Boca Raton got behind the ordering and shipping and hurried thesethings off to us. They are gifts from many of you who care about our children'sfuture. We are grateful.

From this pointon there will be expenses for labor, cement, sand and blocks. Wewill also need windows and tiles for the floor. Our girls are especially eager to seethe kitchen completed so that they can begin cooking classes. We need help inthis area, too ... a couple who would be willing to come as cook and maintenancesupervisor. Here is an excellent way to serve the Lord ina thirdworld country. Therewardof joy in service is reallyrich I Please pray with us for this couple. Might itbe you ?

  • WHAT ARE HER CHANCES FOR LIFE ?

We came across Marie while climbing the mountain to our Nutrition Outpost. Her'smile was typical of any Haitian child on meeting a passer-by. Over her shoulder'was the household bucket that plainly told where she was going ... to carry waterfor the family. Perhaps she would carry it a mile, half mile, or maybe much farther.Ordinarily her future would offer her very little more than carrying water, tilling thefield, selling in the market and raising more babies to continue the cycle of hardwork, hunger and illiteracy.

    What are her chances ?

They could be good. If Marie finds a place in Christianville School her life couldchange drastically. She would receive good nourishment, education and the hopeof a better life.

Our Sponsors are directly responsible for changing the lives of many Haitianchildren already. Daily we watch them grow and change. It's beautiful. But theneed is still great. You can help us find Marie and her brother and her sister. Andperhaps her cousins, too.

With our new school building there is hope, but this hope can only be realized aswe find more and more Sponsors who will tuck one little child into their own heartand lives and share the great blessing of life's gifts.

Your little Marie is waiting for you. Your little Joseph is waiting, too. Won't youwrite us today ?

    COMPASSION PLUS I

What a blessing Sandy is ! Her continual on-call-24 hours-a-day compassion is simplynot of this world. Nothing is ever too muchfor Sandy. There are times when we hide heraway for a little rest and we "send themultitudes away." Sandy rejoices with healings, weeps with those who mourne, prayswith those in need, runs her van as an ambulance, sits all night with the dying andfaces morning after morning crowds of sickand hurting people who gather at the clinicdoors.

Children like these pictured here are not thenorm for our clinic but they are also theremuch too often. They are loved by Sandyoften back to health but sometimes theycome too late. After initial treatment these

children are registered in the Nutrition Pro-

gram and remain there until they reach ahealthy weight and sturdy body. From therewe have been able to take 100 children into

our Kindergarten where they continue to befed and cared and educated.

Christianville reaches out a hand of lovinghelp to the needy in the Name of Jesus.Over 70,000 have had first registrations inthe Clinic Sandy needs help I Please praywith us for a Doctor and a Nurse. The need

    is vast the opportunity exciting.

P.S. We are also in need of visiting Dentists for our Dental Clinic. A week or two of

volunteer services can be a challenging andwonderful experience for your Dentist. Whynot speak with him about a trip here ?

The Evangel's cover this Issue is a scene inside the courtyard of our house whereour school children are seated around a cement garden pool. This courtyard wasgiven by Mrs. Herb Swearingen in Crawfordsville, Indiana. It has been a beautifulgift and very helpful to our work. Children are gathered here often for receivinggifts, fitting new shoes (as you see in the picture above) fitting uniforms, specialmeetings, special luncheons for school teachers or visiting work teams. We arethankful for this space that lends itself to so many activities. This is also the placewhere we have The Annual Missionary Retreat for our missionaries to Haiti.

There is Sue Reed, a volunteer who spent over three months with us helping inevery area. Sue came to us through our good friends at Food For The Poor.

We have had many wonderful visitors this year who have come to help us with thework. We can hardly begin to tell you all of the nice things they have done. And wealso can hardly begin to tell you whoall of these good friends are therejust isn't space. One group camefrom Milligan College, an excellenthard working youth team. You seethem here with Leonard and MarleneSeattle, their leaders. Several ofSam's friends came from Canada, too. It is all of this good help thatmakes it possible for us to grow andto help more children. And with many, they leave a little of their heart heretoo, often in a child they have chosento Sponsor. Our most sincere thanksand love to all who help I

Senior members of our school band pose here for a picture for you. These boysbegan studying music several years ago. Now they are ready to graduate fromChristianville School and they want to continue their music. Do you think it wouldbe nice to allow our boys to stay in the band for a few more years ? We have beenconsidering this and we think the answer will be to keep them with us. fvlaybesome of them will be teachers and will be able to earn their living. They play verynicely oh, wewish you could hearthem ITheiruniforms are bright red jackets, red and white caps, black ties and white shirts and pants. They lookreallysmart! And of course, we are proud of them.

Five new small ponds have been added to our fish project. These lovelyponds arefull of baby fish that are hatching to be put into the big pond. Here you see someof United Nations workers netting some of the small fish to share with other mission projects in Haiti. Theywill also givemanyof the baby fish to our boys whoaremaking ponds near their homes. The baby fish are very very tiny so that you cannot see them in the net. The big pond is full of large fish again and this summer wehopeto have another good harvest. This means fish forourchildren in school andsome for them .to take home for dinner.

  • Boys and Girls, can you imagine how excited our Jean Jean children were whenthey saw their new school benches beingassembled and the building being madeready for school for them ? It was an exciting time for them for they had often longed to go to school but there was nopossibility for them. Now they have a goodChristian School. Here you see the AdventLutheran teens helping Sam set up the benches. It was a big days' work.

    PIGGY-BACK

When you come to Christianville Clinic ifyou don't have a car, you will have to walk. There are no busses back here in the"boonies". Little Louisa came to Sandy atthe clinic every day to have her foot "dressed". Her mother piggy-backs her all the way. This is because her foot has a very very badinfection and she cannot walk. For awhilewe were afraid she would lose her foot andleg but now, with Sandy's tender daily careover the past four months, Louisa isgradually getting better. Sandy feeds hergood food to help her blood to get strongand then keeps her foot very clean. We hopeand pray that she will get well again andalso that there might be a place for her atChristianville School next year.

Coeur d'HaitiDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

    12 August 1987

We are sorry that it has been a few months since we lastcommunicated with you, but political problems in the country hadbroken our line of communication both by mail and by phone sincethe first of June.

It is with great sadness that we report to you that thepolitical problems in Haiti have rekindled. The Haitian peoplehave become very impatient with the present governing council, and have vowed to overthrow the government at whatever the cost. For the past two months, country wide general strikes have beencalled, lasting 6 to 7 days in a row. During a strike, allbusinesses, government offices, everything but hospitals must closeand absolutely no private or public vehicles are allowed on theroad. Vehicles found on the road are stoned and burned. Whatbegan as peaceful political demonstrations in Port au Prince haveprogressed into violent unpredictable outbreaks, thus making itdangerous to travel to Port au Prince even when the strike islifted.

Due to these circumstances, the fact that all we need to existis purchased or obtained in Port au Prince, the fact that Chrisis pregnant and was unable to reach the doctor in Port au Prince, because our work requires traveling on the roads extensively, andit is now unsafe to do so, for these and other reasons, we feltit best to leave Haiti at the present time.

Our absence from the field is temporary! We plan to returnto Haiti as soon as the political situation permits. If Haitiis able to stay on its political agenda and seat a president inFebruary, we plan to return several months after, pending thecountry's stabilization.

We do ask for your continued support for God's work in Haiti. Both the church and school are continuing even in our ab.sence.The group of young leaders we have been training these past twoyears have taken over responsibilities in the church. The schoolis being run by the Haitian principal who has been with us sinceits opening. We feel confident that these workers are capableof continuing the work and ask for your prayers on their behalf.

While we are in the U.S., we will reside in Atlanta, GA,taking the opportunity to minister at Wayne's home church, KenwoodChristian. Chris is making plans to work on furthering her degree, while also preparing for a new baby in February.

The last two months and our exit from Haiti has been physicallyand emotionally draining. Due to the strikes, fuel for electricityis having to be conserved. We were without electricity from 8a.m. until 7 p.m. each day. Summer in Haiti is Hot, but June andJuly days without even a fan are unbearable! Chris was beginningto suffer from frequent partial loss of vision and severe headaches, which we felt were a dangerous condition during pregnancy. A goodday's work was almost physically impossible for either of us dueto the heat and not being able to travel to the church/school onweekdays. We had to leave our home after midnight to bypass riotsand roadblocks on the way to the airport.

We are informing you of all this only to help underscore thegravity of the situation with which we were faced. Our decisionto leave Haiti was not made without a large amount of innerstruggle, deep consideration, and prayer. We are praying ferventlyfor Haiti to resolve their political problems in order that wemight be able to return and continue in the work of God's Kingdom.

We offer our deepest thanks to those who know of the problemswe were facing and lifted up prayers in our behalf. We also deeplyappreciate those who continually pray for us! It was your prayersthat brought us safely home!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us:Wayne & Chris Herget, 8944 Cornell Dr, Jonesboro, GA 30326, 404-4787377. Please continue to send all funds to the Indianapolisaddress.

Wayne will try to visit Haiti periodically this year, duringthe relatively "safe periods". We will keep you informed on thesituation. Once again. Our deepest thanks for your efforts withus to take the gospel to Haiti.

    Dear Friends in Christ,

We, along with the church at Ticousin, have been in fervent prayer and searchingfor almost a year, and have still not beenable to find land to build a permanentmeeting place. The present shelter isjust too small! It is 35ft by 12ft; madeout of woven palm-leaf, and a tin roofsupported by chopped down trees. Justlooking at the crude structure, it doesnot look like much could take palce inside, but on Sunday morning it is so full ofpeople, that even the passers by stop tosee what is going on. Benches must beplaced outside to seat all in attendance!

Haiti Christianville Outreach Evangelism Unto Rural Haiti

CAN YOU HELP US? We need to put upanother palm-leaf structure to serveas a meeting palce for the adults. The present structure will be used forJr. Church. The church people willsupply the labor, but we need to raisethe money to buy materials.

Below is the cost broken down inmaterial needed. Perhaps there is aChurch, Jr. Church, or Sunday Schoolclass that could help by donatingthe money for some support posts orpieces of tin for the roof.

GOD IS WORKING IN THE SITUATION!

Tu uihrough what seems to be a very diffi- oPcult situation, God is teaching His children. He has been teaching us how to give of our- ' "selves, even though we have very little to 7^give! The man who lent the first piece of Uvi'S'land has given another very small piece of aland right next to us. There was a need for ftrr, another classroom for Sunday School and theschool. The church men pulled together andwith Wayne supervising, tliey built another14ft by 15ft palm-leaf structure.
