Club or book a new course on such short notice.Instead, we will be bringing the Spring Fling backto DMGCC in May 2021. We will definitely missthe opportunity to connect with our members andcelebrate the end of another successful ASHRAEyear. With the Spring Fling canceled, our golfcommittee is able to focus on organizing the fallgolf outing. We are scheduled for Briarwood Golf

Club on August 31st for our Fall Frolic. Mark yourcalendars and we hope to see you there! By cancelling our golf outing, we have putourselves in a difficult situation with our researchpromotion (RP) campaign. The Spring Fling istypically our largest RP fundraiser for the year. Itis responsible for a significant portion of our$20,000 RP goal. I’m hoping our members andtheir companies will consider donating to helpoffset the shortage caused by the golf outing. Ifyou and/or your company would like to supportour RP campaign, please take a few moments tovisit our RP section of the newsletter. We havedirections provided on how you can donate onlineand support our chapter. The Iowa Chapter has areputation as an RP leader in our region and wehope to continue that trend this year. Thank youfor your support! With my term as Iowa Chapter President endingsoon I wanted to thank the Board of Governorsand committee chairs for their hard work andeffort this year. As long as I have been involved inASHRAE, the Iowa Chapter has been blessedwith an incredible group of volunteers dedicatedto maintaining a successful chapter. I’d also liketo thank our members and their employers thatsee the benefits of ASHRAE and allow us thetime and resources to make the Iowa Chapter thebest!

Adam Puls will take over as President in July andI am confident he will lead us though anothersuccessful year. Stay safe, healthy, and have agreat summer. I’ll see you all again in the fall! David Poetting ([email protected])Iowa Chapter President 2019-2020

Astronauts Replace Coolant Pumps on International Space StationTwo astronauts spent more than six hours installing replacement coolant pumps during a spacewalk on Monday. The astronauts attachedthe 350-lb (159 kg) pump module to the 6.8 metric ton Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), plugged in power and data cables and splicedtogether eight existing coolant lines. The AMS was not designed to be serviced in orbit, so connecting the coolant lines while working inpressurized spacesuits was especially challenging. Read more

MIT Creates System that Cools Without Using ElectricityA new system provides cooling with no electricity by using the process of radiative cooling. The device, which has no moving parts, uses anaerogel insulation that blocks and reflects visible rays of sunlight. The system can keep fruits and vegetables from spoiling and can helpdouble the time the produce remains fresh in remote places where reliable power for refrigeration is not available. Read more

Thermal Comfort Model Measures Body Shape With SensorsA team at Carnegie Mellon University has created the first model that combines environmental information with data on an individual's bodyshape to determine thermal comfort. Information is aggregated to find the temperature that the most occupants possible will findcomfortable. The system estimates body shape information from depth-imaging sensors, which are less privacy-invasive than approachessuch as cameras. Read more

Water Battery Powers Air-Conditioning SystemsA three-story "water battery" is producing enough energy to power a university's air-conditioning systems, which is reducing its reliance onthe grid by more than 40%. The water battery is a thermal energy storage system that uses energy generated by a 2.1-megawattphotovoltaic system to cool 4.5 megaliters of water resting inside a three-story tank. The campus' air-conditioning systems use the cooledwater. Read more
