This is my favorite time of the year, topped only by FOOTBALL season … and CHRISTMAS. OK, maybe not my real favorite, but I do like everything about it except for the threat of tornados. Maybe I started liking April back in our LSHS days because it meant we were getting close to Prom time and to school being out for the summer. I loved getting out of school, but was always anxious for it to start back again in the Fall. Guess I just missed seeing all of you! Harold Lee Shewmaker
4/16/1940 – 4/2/2013
Harold L. Shewmaker, 72, of Kansas City, MO, passed away April 2, 2013. Funeral Services will be
held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at the Wallace Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill, MO. Burial in
Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 12 noon until service time at 2:00 p.m. Harold
worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City for over 38 years and had served as Vice-
President. He was a veteran and had proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Harold is
survived by his wife Carolyn; three children, Clyde, Cindy and Steve; 5 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren. Cont: Paul Coverdell Scholarship Fund, Lee's Summit Educational Foundation or

The following was Harold’s bio published in the Class bio booklet in 2009 . . .
“Shortly after graduation I joined the Navy and spent the next three and a half years learning a great deal about life. I was on a ship for most of that time, and traveled to the far east visiting many ports including Japan, Philippines, Marshal Islands, and Hong Kong. We also crossed the equator and the international date line. While in the Navy I met and married Carolyn in San Diego. We have three children and five grandchildren, and will celebrate our 50th anniversary this year. I left the Navy in 1961 and returned to the Lee's Summit area. Times were a little difficult economically, but I was able to obtain a job at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. I started at the lowest level clerical job they had in the Savings Bond department. During my 38 year career I worked my way up through the ranks to the Vice President level. I was able to further my education by taking Bank sponsored training classes including attending the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. I also taught classes at a local banking school, and participated in numerous charitable organizations throughout my career. I participated on many national task forces and committees helping to establish policy for Federal Reserve System operational and administrative procedures. I have managed most all administrative and operational areas of the Bank, and was Vice President Branch Manager of the Omaha Branch from 1988 to 1996. I retired early in 1999, and since that time Carolyn and I have been enjoying ourselves by traveling and relaxing. We have been to all of the States in the US, on a number of cruises, and to Europe. We plan to continue traveling and having fun as long as we can and our money holds out.” I’m sure that Harold has found our other Classmates
from 1957 that are up there waiting for the rest of us on

Dean and I enjoyed having everyone to our home on Saturday evening. Eating and visiting are two of
our favorite pastimes (well, and baseball!!). Thanks to everyone for bringing the "goodies" for all to
enjoy! There were 18 here and we hope next year there will be even more of you join us!
The Scholarship presentation was impressive. The recipient this year is one busy young lady!
Dinner at Monetti's was fun. The food was good--they could improve on their service to large groups
such as ours!! Once again we excel at eating and visiting!! Look forward to next year!

From Eve (Cook) Hoygaard . . . Trust all enjoyed seeing each other and that the scholarship
recipient is as outstanding as the previous ones were.
As is typical for Colorado, our fickle spring weather includes snow/cold/wind/rain/ sunshine ...
often in the same day! Believe it is to be 5 degrees again this Wednesday. Talked to Barb
Lewallan on Friday to wish her ( and Glenn) a Happy 50th Anniversary. We had a schedule
conflict so were unable to attend. We both agreed that we need to be sure to have a Colorado
GTG soon! Since I decided that one more stressor would just be wonderful (NOT!) I think we are
going to remodel our kitchen this summer. I am not looking forward to this process. It will not
involve moving walls,doors or windows! Wish all it took was writing the check plus a magic
wand and it would be complete but it won't be that easy. Eve
I had a phone call from Garry Garrison asking how the weekend went. He & Peggy by-
passed us this year and headed directly home thru Oklahoma & Western Kansas from their
winter months in Texas. He told me that Fri, during their drive thru Oklahoma, they were
“a little short on cash” so decided to stop and knock on some doors. (I’m sure you all know
how Garry exaggerates in his stories … sort of like Bill Turner!) Anyway, would you
believe the first door they knocked on was answered by none other than JERRY DAVIS!
Garry asked Jerry if he could spare a little cash and Jerry’s reply “no, but I can sure give
you a drink of cold water! Come on in!” Sounded like they had a wonderful visit. The
Davis’s had just returned from a trip to Hawaii a couple of weeks ago and, Garry tells me,
Geraldine is flying to VA soon to babysit some grandkids. THAT sounds like fun to me,
altho I’d rather not be going with a twisted knee like she has!
We have no ‘update from our “fearless leader” Ed Heinlein’ this month, as he’s still in
his travels from our L.S. weekend. He was leaving L.S., being flown to Dallas by a friend of
his that lives there and flies his own plane! However, I’m sorry to say, Sunday before they
left L.S. Ed spent 2-3 hrs in the ER at St. Luke’s Hospital. He had fallen flat on his face,
broke his cheek bone and ended up with a “real shiner” as I was told by Terry Reynolds.
Glad it was no worse than that and he & Vivian were able to continue their planned travels
thru TX before going back home to San Jose.

I read someplace that April is “Grilled Cheese Month”. Never heard that before but it
seems like an incentive to get creative. So many great cheeses are available and I decided
to see what Havarti would do for a grilled cheese sandwich--Mmmmm….DELICIOUS!
GRILLED HAVARTI TOASTIE
(Makes 2 sandwiches)
Use the original or, if you can handle a little heat, try Havarti with Peppadew Peppers.
4 slices Havarti Cheese
4 slices Texas Toast
Butter (try Mayo) to spread bread
4 slices Bacon (cooked crisp)
1 Avocado (cut into 8 slices)
Assemble all ingredients as you’ll need to work rather quickly.
• Spread butter (or mayo) on 1 side of 2 slices of bread and place buttered side
down on griddle over medium heat. Top each slice of bread with one slice of Havarti, 2
slices of bacon, 2 slices of avocado, and another slice of Havarti.
• Spread remaining bread with butter or mayo and place on top of all with
buttered side out. Brown each side for 3 or 4 minutes until golden and Havarti is soft.
GRILLED HORSERADISH HAVARTI & MUSHROOM TOASTIE
1 T. Olive Oil
4 slices Beefsteak Rye Bread
Butter or Mayo
4 slices Havarti w/Horseradish
1/4 lb sliced Mushrooms-Shitake/Oyster
1 tsp. minced Herbs--Tarragon or Basil
Salt & Pepper to taste
• Heat olive oil in a skillet over med-high heat. Add the mushrooms and cook
until liquid has evaporated and mushrooms are dry, about 7 or 8 minutes. Add the herbs,
salt & pepper. Remove from heat.
• Spread butter (or mayo) on 1 side of 2 slices of bread and place buttered side
down on a hot griddle. Top with one slice of cheese, a generous amount of mushrooms,
and another slice of Havarti. Butter remaining 2 slices of bread and place buttered side
out on top. Brown on each side 3 or 4 minutes until golden and Havarti is soft.
GRILLED HAM & CHEDDAR TOASTIE
4 slices Texas Toast 3 Eggs, beaten with 2 T. Milk
2 slices of a good Cheddar Cheese Butter, melted in hot sauté pan
2 to 4 slices Black Forest Ham Drizzle of Honey
• Top 2 slices of Texas Toast with one slice of cheddar and 1 or 2 slices of ham.
Add a drizzle of honey and place remaining bread on top. Melt butter in hot sauté pan.
Whisk eggs/milk in separate dish and coat sandwiches in the egg wash. Cook like French
Toast, browning on both sides. Cut into quarters and serve with Maple Syrup.

Judy and her husband, Bamse . . .
“After LSHS I attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa and received AA degree there. After Graceland I attended Long Beach State College in Long Beach, CA studying Recreation for approx. 2-1/2 years. I toured Europe extensively in 1962 and met my coming Husband, Jens-Otto Damgaard, (nickname “Bamse” which in Danish means teddy bear) in Denmark.
We married in 1963 and I moved to Denmark where I enjoyed 27 years – fluent in Danish, of course. We had 2 sons, Kenn & Derek during that time. I worked for International Harvester for several years. We were fortunate enough to travel a lot in Europe and northern Africa as Bamse worked for the organization People to People and later for the Hotel Sheraton in Denmark.
I was active in the American Women’s Club while living in Copenhagen – very rewarding. Later I worked as an Administrative Officer for Bank of America for many years also requiring a lot of traveling.
After that my Husband & I bought a banquet restaurant, Ritz, which we owned and operated for several years. I became quite the chef, as I would fill in for the Chef sometimes, also filling in as waitress on occasion.
We moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1990 where we both worked for a land developer for several years. Bamse took his Realtor license during this time. Later I worked for a family law attorney which was very interesting – law wise and people wise!
Our oldest son is a banker in Minneapolis with wife, Amalia, and grandson, Jens, and our youngest son is a teacher for troubled teens in Aalborg, Denmark with wife, Eva, and sons, Jonathan & Daniel and daughter, Juanita. Needless to say, we still do a lot of traveling just to keep up with the family. And, we travel to Denmark to see family and friends every summer.”
(I saw on Facebook a couple of weeks ago that gas was selling in Copenhagen,
Denmark, for $9.24 a gallon! Judy & Bamse, you’d better stay in Florida until this
drops a bit)

This event allowed the teams to show off what they’ve accomplished so far this season, not only to their sponsors, but to younger students interested in the program. For two hours, visitors could see these robots in action, talk with members of the teams, and enjoy some free sweets. On January 5th, NASA revealed that this year’s game would be Ultimate Ascent. Over 100 frisbees will cover the field. Robots will pick up these discs and shoot them into three different goals of varying heights. On each side of the field is a 10 foot tall pyramid structure. Before time runs out, robots can climb these structures for bonus points. Teams are given six weeks to plan and build their robot. Robots must be completed by Tuesday, February 19th. On this day, teams will bag and tag their robots. The first competition will take place March 14th-16th at the Hale Arena.

FIRST Greater Kansas City Regional Robotics Tournament Success
for Lee's Summit
By Wendy Hayworth Intern Reporter for the Tribune [email protected] The crowd was on the edge of their seats as Frisbees whizzed through the air this past weekend. All three Lee’s Summit High School robotics teams competed at the Greater Kansas City Regional FIRST Robotics Tournament at the Hale Arena.
Lee’s Summit High School’s Team Driven competed in their first regional of the season this past weekend and earned the Engineering Inspiration Award for their ability to inspire engineers in their community through their summer camps, Junior Robotics League, and their annual CowTown ThrowDown offseason event. This award qualifies Team Driven for the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis and earns them a $5,000 grant from NASA to help cover expenses.
Team Driven was a semifinalist, ranking fourth in the qualifiers, and the number three seed team. A scouting application created by Team Driven member Louie Bertoncin allowed the scouts to gather valuable data. This information guided their strategies and gave them an extra edge in the matches. Team Driven mentor, Rex Brown, was presented with the Greater Kansas City Regional Volunteer of the Year Award. Brown was also a Woodie Flowers Award Finalist in 2008.
Team Driven has prepared some new tricks for their next tournament in Fayetteville, Arkansas the weekend of April 4th-6th.
Jared is the son of Cecil & Carol Ann’s daughter, Mindy (Robbins) Holm. Mindy’s
husband John, Jared’s father, is a volunteer advising the group. John is an engineer,
employed by the Corps of Engineers, and has mentored many kids groups through
their church and community.
This group of LSHS students has been extremely successful in their competitions and
will be attending “Nationals” in St. Louis in April.
All three R-7 high-school robotics teams – Lee's Summit High School Team Driven,
Lee's Summit North High School Broncobots and Lee's Summit West High School
Team titanium – have qualified for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of
Science and Technology) World Championship. The local teams will compete with
teams from throughout the world later this month in St. Louis.

Health Updates
From Glenn Williams . . .
I doubt if I'll make the GTG next month as I have joined the health problem group. I have a
fractured vertebra and can't handle more than about an hour behind the wheel. I am mobile
but move a bit more slowly than before. I opted for the conservative of three treatment
options, a brace. An injection of glue or surgery were the other options and those have little
appeal. I'll know more about the healing progress in late May. Glenn
