TBA Book Group with Rabbi Kulwin Fall 2015: New York Times Best Sellers: The books could not be more different in subject, but each was a best seller for many weeks. Blume and Doerr are authors of note, and both possess that rare ability to move and provoke while ensuring a reading experience of genuine pleasure.

Thursday, September 3, 2015, 7:30 PM In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume

Elizabeth, New Jersey. 1952. In a matter of weeks, three airliners fall from the skies onto young Judy Blume’s home town. With those events as backdrop, the unparalleled storyteller weaves together generations of families affected by those tragedies, simultaneously painting a remarkable picture of a particular time and place.

Thursday, October 1, 7:30 PM

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Two stories converge. The first, of Marie-Laure, blind from age six, who flees with her father from Nazi-occupied Paris. The second, of Werner, a German orphan who becomes a hero in the Hitler Youth. Doerr uncovers good and kindness in most unexpected ways. A National Book Award finalist.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

Piano Concerts: Jews and the Piano…A Year of Celebration

A list of world-renowned Jewish pianists might begin with just Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein but would quickly reach into the hundreds. As an exami-nation of concert programs from the world’s great concert halls would show, the history of piano virtuosity cannot be separated from Jewish history, so signifi-cant and influential have Jewish pianists been. This year we celebrate this relationship with concerts by three great Jewish pianists, each from a different country: Arnaldo Cohen from Brazil, Joseph Kalichstein from Israel, and Vladimir Feltsman from Russia. They will play ma-jor works from throughout the classical piano repertoire, representing the breadth of Jewish pianistic accomplishment. Admission fees: Members and students: $18 Non-members: $25 This series is underwritten by the Ann & Milton Colman/Samuel A. Cohen Fund. Save the dates: Arnaldo Cohen Saturday, October 17, 7:30 PM Joseph Kalichstein Sunday, November 22, 3:00 PM Vladimir Feltsman Sunday, March 20, 3:00 PM

Lunch and Learn with Karen Frank, TBA Congregational Nurse – The Science of Aging What does medicine and science teach us about our aging process? How can we best work with what we know to make the most of our health and vitality? How does attitude impact on our physical self? Gather over lunch with Karen Frank, Congregational Nurse, to discuss this very pertinent topic. Thursdays, October 1, October 15 and October 29, 11:30 AM Monthly Lunch and Learn with Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz: The Book of Judges ─ Please Save Me (or Sin, Punishment and Rescue. Repeat) In this monthly class, we will learn about the Judges who tried and failed to lead the people at this critical time in the history of the Jewish nation. As we explore their leadership strengths and weaknesses, we will also shed light on the book’s meaning for us today. Thursdays, October 22, November 19, December 17, January 14, February 11, March 10, April 14 and May 19, 11:30 AM
