HISD CONNECTIONS SUMMER 2012 SUMMER SCHOOL Summer School will be held June 11–July 12. Schools will be open Monday through Thursday. Questions about Summer School? Call the Parent Community Assistance Line: 713-556-7121 HISD staff will answer questions about school zones and boundaries, enrollment and registration, policies and procedures, transportation, bus schedules, and other issues. PROMOTION STANDARDS The Houston Independent School District uses two different academic measures to decide whether a student will be promoted to the next grade level. They are course grades and, for grades 1 and 2, the High-Frequency Word Evaluation. For the 2011–2012 school year only, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will not be used for promotion standards. However, the raw score data available from the STAAR will be used to inform which students are in need of additional summer instruction. Once passing standards are set by the state, the STAAR will be included in promotion standards beginning with the 2012–2013 school year. Stanford and Aprenda results will not be used as a promotion standard. For more information go to houstonisd.org/promotionstandards SUMMER FOOD SCHEDULE HISD will again provide free nutritious breakfasts and lunches to all of Houston’s children this summer at more than 200 school locations. There is no paperwork involved and no registration is needed. Children must be between the ages of one and 18, but do not have to be enrolled in summer school to receive a free meal. Adults may also participate in the program by purchasing breakfast for $2.00 and lunch for $3.25. Children can stop by any of the participating HISD schools between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. for breakfast, and between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. for lunch. The meals will be offered Monday through Thursday, beginning June 11, 2012, and will continue through Thursday, July 12. After July 12, free lunch and afternoon snacks will be available at various community facilities through the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department. If you have questions regarding the HISD Summer Food Service Program, please call the Food Services Office at 713-491-5944. BACK TO SCHOOL FEST HISD will be holding a Back to School Fest to help students and their families prepare for the upcoming school year. Students will be able to get free school supplies, uniforms, and back-to-school immunizations. Families will also have an opportunity to visit informational exhibits showcasing programs and services provided by HISD, the City of Houston, and community organizations. normaS de PromociónEl Distrito Escolar Independiente de Houston usa dos medida académicas para determinar si los estudiantes serán promovidos al próximo nivel; las calificaciones del curso y para 1er y 2º grado, la evaluación de palabras frecuentes. Sólo para el año escolar 2011–2012, la evaluación estatal de preparación académica (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness o STAAR) no formará parte de las normas de promoción.
