Description:
This issue we are concentrating on entertainment, a valuable ingredient of the holiday park experience for customers. Kids particularly need positive ways to burn off energy in a safe environment so that the whole family can relax and enjoy their holiday. Even the smallest park can find space for a kiddie ride, or a climbing frame and when it is sited near a café or restaurant – you can increase the dwell time and sales of drinks and snacks. We bring you a profile of Silverdale Holiday Park which has invested £1m on its leisure facilities to include US-style 10-pin bowling, a new soft-play zone for kids, as well as an updated leisure centre with a larger supermarket selling locally-sourced foods. With the new pound coin due to enter circulation in 2017 and a new polymer five-pound note arriving in September this year, it may be that you will have to update your coin mechanisms and note acceptors throughout your parks.

In a deal worth £11.5million, Yorkshire-basedPark Leisure hasstrengthened its portfolio offive-star parks across theUK, with the acquisition ofthe award-winning BryntegHoliday Home Park, locatedin Llanrug, close toCaernarfon, North Wales.

The purchase of Brynteg, which was approved by Park Leisure’s Boardmembers, is their second acquisition in North Wales in just over 12months following the £15 million arrival of fellow five-star holiday parkPlas Coch, Anglesey, to the group. The move cements their strategicpresence in the competitive North Wales holiday park market.

In 2015, Park Leisure turned over in excess of £59.6 million across elevenholiday parks, a 45 per cent increase on the previous year. The additionof Brynteg will see the company employee numbers grow to over 400full and part-time staff members across its portfolio of parks and its Yorkhead office.

The company aims to sustain and exceed the current five-star standards, with future investment programmes planned to further enhance theirparks and facilities.

Gary Molloy, CEO at Park Leisure, said: “This represents yet anothermilestone in our history, one that underpins our strategy of consideredgrowth through selective acquisition. It further reinforces our desire topush industry boundaries, offering five-star, premium holiday parksunlike anywhere else in the UK.”

Skelwith Fold Holiday Park nearAmbleside has created a series

of woodland enclosuresacross its 130-acre site

which will see plantsand animals developas they once didcenturies ago. Guestsat a Lakeland holidaypark will this yearbecome part of anexperiment in time

travel, helping areas ofthe grounds shift

hundreds of years backinto the past.

The secret to unlocking the past, saysdirector Henry Wild, will be the enforced absence from theenclosures of people – and, even more importantly, of deer. Likemany parts of rural Cumbria, he says, Skelwith Fold’s groundshave been dramatically changed over time by the impact of deergrazing on herbs, shrubs and young trees.

But the increasing numbers of deer haven’t affected justvegetation, says Henry, but also wildlife. Butterflies, bees, mice, voles, and birds such as tits, finches, and woodpeckers are alsoput under threat by deer feasting on the plants they depend onfor food.

However, the fight-back has now begun – and visitors to themulti-award winning park will be able to witness the emergenceof native woodlands familiar to our ancient ancestors. “It’s afascinating scenario that we are staging here, and it’s unlikelythat we will have to wait long to see the first results of the newbiodiversity in our enclosures,” said Henry. “Deer, unfortunately, have a particular passion for both rare and nationally importantflowering plants such as orchids, ladies smock, oxlips andbluebells – but they could quickly recover. “I hope we’ll noticesoon the regeneration of these blooms, and then a greaterdiversity of broadleaf trees like ash, hazel, rowan and willowswhich deer also love to eat.

“Insects from beetles to butterflies, and animals such as raresnails and shrews will also benefit – and this will have a knock-on effect on birdlife which depend on such species for their diet.

“We dearly love our deer, and there will still be plenty for themto feast on in our grounds outside the fenced enclosures – butwhat goes on inside could prove extremely interesting,” saidHenry.

Emma Spagnola from Cromer has been namedas the winner of a brand new caravan holidayhome in a national draw organised by ParkHolidays UK.

After visiting the same Suffolk holiday park forover 30 years, a North Norfolk mum haslearned that she has now made her last visitthere as a paying guest. That’s because luckyEmma beat thousands of other entries to winthe keys to a fully equipped luxury leisurehome at Broadland Sands Holiday Park inLowestoft.

With 25 Park Holidays UK parks to choosefrom, Emma plumped for Broadland Sands asthe location for her prize because of the manyhappy holiday memories it holds for her.Emma first began visiting the top-ratedLowestoft park with her parents as an 11-year-old. Her grandma later bought a caravanholiday home there which allowed even morestays.

Today, Emma and her husband Michael – whohave four children – are still regular visitors, and spent their holidays last summer atBroadland Sands. In fact, the family hadalready booked another holiday at the park for

this May when the news came throughabout Emma’s fabulous win.

Similar caravan holiday homes to Emma’sprize, a two-bedroom Delta Radiant withdouble-glazing and central heating, sell atBroadland Sands for up to £34,995. But her joyat winning Park Holidays UK’s annual drawgoes far beyond the cash value of the home, for it will also represent a life-changingexperience for the family.

Emma’s three-year-old son Mason has beendiagnosed with autism which means, she says, that he craves routine and consistency in hislife. Her new caravan holiday home will helpbring this about by allowing the family tomake regular visits to a holiday park fromwhich Mason already gets great pleasure.More than that, says Emma, Mason has fallenin love with the park’s mascot Loopy, and cannow look forward to repeated get-togetherswith his new pal!

Another bonus is that her 13-year-old son is akeen go-karting fan and makes frequent visitsto a karting centre based near BroadlandSands. Emma will also be inviting her mumand dad to make use of the caravan holidayhome, and says they are looking forward toreliving their fond recollections of the park.

Emma and her husband Michael – who is asupport worker with autistic adults – say theprize really is like a dream coming true: “We’vealways imagined how great it would be toown a holiday caravan at Broadland Sands, buthaving never won anything before I didn’treally think we stood much of a chance,” saidEmma. “I was absolutely flabbergasted whenthe letter from Park Holidays UK came through, and we haven’t stopped celebrating since!

Due to enter circulation September 2016,the new £5 note will feature WinstonChurchill and will be the first plasticbanknote to be issued by the Bank ofEngland. The following year, 2017 will seethe Royal Mint issue a new £1 coin, something which has been widely spokenabout because of its unusual 12 sideddesign, which might remind those of acertain age of the old threepenny bitwhich was withdrawn from circulationback in 1971.

Although the polymer banknotes will bereleased first, it seems to be theintroduction of the new £1 coin (which willnot be released until 2017) which haseveryone in the industry talking.

Our current £1 coin has been in circulationfor over thirty years, much longer than thenormal life cycle of a modern British coin. The new coin will be twelve sided andmade from two different coloured metals. The new £1 will become the most securecoin in circulation, allowing the UK torapidly reduce the amount of counterfeitcoins. All cash handling equipment willhave to be updated ahead of the newcoin’s introduction in March 2017.

More information is known about the newUK polymer banknotes. The notes willenter circulation this September and willfeature Winston Churchill. The £10 notewill be replaced the year after, againissued in polymer and will feature JaneAustin. The £20 will also be replaced inthe future and it has been confirmed thatthis again will be a polymer note. The newpolymer note range will be slightly smallerin size than our current notes, withincreased durability and enhanced securityfeatures, thereby offering more fraudprotection. Polymer banknotes aremanufactured from transparent plasticfilm, specially coated with an ink layer thatenables it to carry the printed designfeatures of banknotes. The materials allowthe inclusion of ‘windows’ or clear portionsin the design, which enhance protection

against counterfeiting. Despite the visiblematerial change the UK polymerbanknotes will retain their overall look.

Innovative SolutionWe spoke to Andy Bullock, BusinessDevelopment Manager at one of theleading manufacturers of cash handlingequipment, Innovative Technology, aboutthe hot topic that everyone is talking aboutour new £5 note and £1 coin.

“In terms of note validation, polymerbanknotes pose no additional issues, all ITLnote validators will accept and stack asnormal after a simple currency datasetupdate. Although new to us in the UK,polymer notes are already widely used ina number of countries worldwide includingAustralia and Canada” he said.

With the new notes due to be issued inSeptember, we will ensure customers haveaccess to currency dataset files during thesummer, allowing sufficient time for all

validators in the field to be updated aheadof the note entering circulation. To furthersimplify the process, we will create a SMARTUpdate Tool allowing all equipment to beupdated with one of our DA3 handheldprogrammers in minutes” he said.

It is vital that any customers still using olddipswitch units (which became obsolete atthe end of 2014) update to newer USBvalidators before the introduction of thenew £5 polymer note. No update will beavailable for the original dipswitch NV9and NV10 units.”

To stay up to date with all of the latestinformation on the new UK notes andcoins visit our website www.innovative-technology.com

Over the next twoyears we will see theintroduction of polymerbanknotes and a newtwelve-sided £1 coin inthe UK with newmaterial, designs andsecurity features.

Astrosystems: For Reliability in Accepting Cash The arcade can provide hours of entertainment for all members of thefamily on holiday or out for a day at the seaside. However, the successof arcades machines is quite often dependent on the ability to takecash efficiently.

As a cash handling specialist, and manufacturer of the Microcoin coinmechanism range and the GBA note validator products, AstroSystemsLtd are all too aware of the need to offer a reliable component, thatdoes not cause the prospective player any anxiety when trying to payfor an amusement machine, ride or game. This stage is critical whentrying to retain interest in a machine.

Especially designed for this market, the Microcoin SP coin validator, hasproved itself to be an exceptionally successful product, particularly inthe UK, where it is the default coin product for the pool table industry. There is also a noticeable wpresence in the jukebox, amusementmachine, and kiddie ride arena.

The extremely high levels of reliability of the SP, together with aunique jam release mechanism, have made this a very attractiveproduct to operators and service technicians. The jam releasemechanism easily clears any item caught in the coin path, be it a lollystick or a screwed-up bus ticket. By simply pressing the reject button afew times, the path of the Microcoin SP movesaway from the body, thereby releasing the foreignobject.

Remote downloading of firmware and softwarevia a PC-based program enablesthe machine engineer to keep the MicrocoinSP coin mechanism fully up to date. Withthe forthcoming introduction of the new £1coin in 2017, AstroSystems Ltd are on trackto release a new configuration bythe end of the year.

As a further optional extra, the SPcan be fitted with a stylish SP115mm faceplate which offers ablue illuminated coin slot, or a topentry faceplate suitable for retrofitwithin a standard amusementdoor.

Astrosystems Ltd are based inOxfordshire, and have been in thecurrency handling business forover 20 years.

Clearly, the arrival of the secure UK polymerbanknotes, followed quickly by the new 12-sided £1 coin will prove to be a very busytime for the UK’s Holiday Parks and leisuresites, when there are more choices andchallenges than ever facing machineoperators. It’s for times like this, when goodsolid advice from someone you’ve beenworking with really counts, that the E-Service team can make a real contribution.

Focussed 100% on the UK’s gaming andamusement sector operators, E-Service isready to help. The company brings years ofexperience in currency hardware andtechnical support to the table, and is well-equipped to support Holiday Parkoperators via our highly trained engineersacross the UK. Coin and banknoteequipment needing conversion, upgrade orreplacement in preparation for the new UKcurrency can be confidently placed into thesafe hands of the E-Service team.

Fresh from attending the HM Treasurycurrency pre-launch meeting in London thisweek, E-Service Managing Director MikeClokie is clear on the timetable ahead“Amusement, gaming and vending machineoperators can start work with us early thissummer to install the essential softwareupgrades to their coin and banknotevalidators. The new £1 coins and polymer£5 notes have already been released tocurrency equipment manufacturers, and E-Service expects to have a complete range ofnew firmware to deploy from the leadingsuppliers in the coming weeks”.

Early preparation and calibration of coin andnote equipment is the key to a smoothtransition, believes Clokie. “We are availableto attend your site and help pull together acomplete upgrade plan for all yourequipment, if this would help,” heexplained. “We have some time- and cost-saving ideas for currency counters, changemachines and other hardware that can helpmake a huge difference to your HolidayPark’s currency upgrade plan.”

To further assist leisure sector operators, E-Service has prepared and published its own‘Guide to the New UK Currency Upgrade’,which is available free of charge from thecompany’s website www.e- service.co.uk orby telephoning 01707-280050. “This is asimple to use, comprehensive overview of

which hardware can be updated and whichmust be replaced,” explained Clokie. “The E-Service team can also provide all sorts ofother benefits, including trade-in offers, advance replacements and field engineervisits that will make life a great deal easierfor busy Holiday Park managers who needthis UK currency upgrade process to becarried out swiftly, smoothly and withoutunnecessary expense.”

The new £1 coins and polymer notes willco-exist in people’s wallets and pockets fora considerable amount of time, furtheremphasising the need for leisure centresand holiday parks to prepare well inadvance. HM Treasury expects that 50% ofthe old £5 notes will have been removedby Christmas 2016, and that 99% will beout of circulation by June 2017, when theold note ceases to be legal tender.

“It’s a significant industry challenge ahead,”concluded Clokie,“ but I amconfident that the E-Service teamare equipped and ready to helpour many clients across the UK.The good news for everybody isthat the new £1 coins andpolymer notes will be amongstthe world’s most securecurrencies going forward.Back in 1696 when the GreatRecoinage Act was passed,10% of the nation’s coinswere fakes andcounterfeiters were beinghanged from thegallows! Our energy futureWhile we wait in hope for the southernFrance ITER nuclear fusion collaboration tosupply unlimited power for everyone; thereare major energy supply shortfalls to address.

The larger picture in the UK is that by 2050,demand for power could rise by as much as600% and measures must be put in place in2016 to start the transition process.

Current generation cannot meet supply so asystem of local micro grids across the wholeof the UK is absolutely essential. Residentialand business communities will collaborate toprovide local energy for their immediate areaand parks taking a lead is good PR.

As ever - money plays a part here; incentivesfor certain technologies are now focused onnew areas. The key is identifying whichtechnology brings the biggest return oninvestment whether subsidies exist or not.

Energy storageIn order to make our new nationwide microgrids work we must have somewhere tolocally store the energy produced - mypartners and I are currently evaluating certainenergy storage technologies which are anemerging energy trend in 2016 sinceinvesting in a battery storage facility is a highcost exercise with very high financial returnsdue to incentives in place; we will mentionthis again later in the article.

My road map to sustainability for leisureparks starting with energy trends in 2016

Metering and monitoringP272 is the directive from OFGEM, whichrequires all non half hourly meters 05-08maximum demand profile to change to halfhourly (HH) meters by 1st April 2017. HHmeters give accurate frequent data resultingin closer monitoring of energy use. Eventually

03 and 04 meters are likely to be included.I strongly recommend you install low costradio monitors for electricity, water, gas andespecially bulk LPG given the very real healthand safety risks as well as cost caused bylarge leaks.

Once monitors are in place they can helpidentify where new technology can beintroduced, for example voltage optimisation(VO), which typically reduces electricity costsby 12-15%. Returns are backed up by afinancial guarantee in some cases, which is avery important consideration.

VO can also be incorporated in theaforementioned battery storage units whichmay be sited close to buildings which havehigh consumption; these units store energyat night when electricity is cheap, thenrelease the energy for up to two daytime orevening hours when energy costs are higher.

The park site draws energy from the storageunit, which automatically cuts power fromthe grid within milliseconds without anydisruption and because energy storage issuch a central part of the future grid systemthere are very attractive financial payouts forusing these units.

Other technologies to consider:

Solar has sadly lost the former attractivesubsidies, whilst biomass remains wellsupported as does ground source heat, whichis a huge source of warming energy.

How holiday parks canavoid a penaltyWith the Carbon Reduction Committment(CRC) now scrapped due to over-complexity,the UK government is imposing much higherclimate change levies from with the big jumpfrom current rate of 0.6 pence per unit ofelectricity in up to 0.9p 2019 and bulk LPGrates almost doubling.

Whilst a fraction of a penny charge may notseem to matter it will impact most bills bywell over five per cent in future. Why paythis?

CCL will be continue to be charged onelectricity, natural gas and bulk LPG for thoseparks which have not taken exemption underthe HMRC mixed use rule. Fortunately mostof you will by now have taken my advice onhow to benefit from CCL exemption.Further advice on this and otherdevelopments can be found at my LeisurePark Energy E-newsletter

What is clear that energy trends in 2016 arejust the start of a huge and confusingprocess, one that holiday parks will needguiding carefully through.

Creating urban meadows is a fast andeconomical way of providing a strikingcolour effect to both large and small areasand can be used to both enhance theappearance of a facility or disguise orprovide an uplift to areas that may be of adull or unattractive nature.

Case Study 1At Paignton Zoo in Devon, a site was left in poor conditionfollowing some recent demolition work and it wasnecessary to ‘make-good’ on a very limited budget. Euroflorurban flower seed provided an excellent and beautifulsolution to a very tricky problem. A Euroflor Honey mix wasselected and this provided outstanding displays of colourand flower from early July through till the beginning ofOctober.

Catherine Mortimer, Head Gardener at the zoo stated: “Regular visitors coming to Paignton Zoo for years said theyhad never seen such a beautiful flower display in the zoosince they have been visiting. I truly feel that the displaycreated by Euroflor could compete with even of mostflamboyant animals in the zoos collection.”

Case Study 4A similar effect was taking place in Essex. Lake Meadows is a popular andextremely well-visited park in the heart of the town of Billericay and has beenreceiving much public praise for a flower meadow sown with a Euroflor seedmix called ‘Sarah Bouquet’ which provides height, colour and a prolongedflowering period.

“We have been overwhelmed that so many park users have commented onhow amazing theflower meadowis and how muchthey haveenjoyed it,” saythe Friends ofLake Meadows, agroup ofvolunteers andsupporters worktogether withBasildon Councilto maintain anddevelop the park.

Colouring the countryside…natura"y!

Case Study 2A little further down the coast into Cornwall, St Enodoc golf course selectedEuroflor in conjunction with the renovation of one of the tees. As it wasnecessary tochange the courseof a stream andbecause the bankswere bare, it wasdecided to sowsome Euroflorurban meadowflower seed inorder to providesome visualaesthetics to thehole.

Scott Gibson the course manager commentated, “The flower seed mixtureswe used were Ground Cover and Honey and the club membership wascompletely taken by the flower display and received many accolades throughthe season from visitors and garden enthusiasts. We had colour all the wayinto the latter part of October right up to the first frosts.”

Case Study 3In Doncaster, the Metropolitan Council trialed threeareas of wildflower planting with a variety of Euroflorseed mixes

“We were looking at ways to reduce grass cutting andthe sowing of wildflower seeds was an option:” statedGill Gillies , the Councils Assistant Director for theEnvironment, “The areas sown were in full bloomthroughout the summer prompting an influx ofcompliments on social media. Comments ranged from‘an amazing entrance into Doncaster, to an enormousbenefit to an abundance of wildlife.” www.rigbytaylor.com

Among the extra facilities at SilverdaleHoliday Park near Arnside is now a US-styleten-pin bowling alley with electronic scoringand computerised stats such as ball speed.

But bowling is not the only striking newattraction at the park. A new kids' soft-playzone, function rooms, bar extension and extrarestaurant seating have also been served up.

In addition, the leisure centre now includesan enlarged supermarket with an emphasison locally sourced food and drink, fromLakeland artisan bread and cured meats toCumbrian craft beers.

According to park owner Michael Holgate, itslatest investment is already receiving thethumbs-up from both holidaymakers andlocal people belonging to its leisure club.

The new features join the leisure centre'sswimming pool complex with spa and sauna, and a professional gymnasium with state-of-the art exercising equipment

In 2016, Silverdale Holiday Park is marking itssixtieth year under the Holgate family'sownership – and Michael says all the signsare that this could be its busiest season ever:

"We finalised plans for our newdevelopments before Cumbria's floodingproblems arose, but were determined topress ahead so they would be ready for thenew season," he said.

"In the event, the initial fall-off in enquiries inDecember was quickly replaced by a strongupswing as the year got underway – andbusiness levels are now higher than this timelast spring.

"Cumbria will always remain a dream holidaydestination for many people, and I thinkvisitors have been given extra confidence bythe resilience shown by our tourism industry,"said Michael.

Silverdale Holiday Park provides over 500caravan holiday homes to buy and to let, pitches for touring caravans, motorhomes andtents, and luxury timber-built camping pods.

Its many accolades include Cumbria Tourism'soverall holiday park of the year award twoyears ago, and a top gold award in 2016 from

botanist David Bellamy for its environmentalcare.

The Holgates first came to Silverdale in 1956from the Blackburn area in Lancashire whereMichael's grandfather, Billy, had started asuccessful caravan manufacturing business.

The family's plan was to both carry on theproduction side of the operation whilstrunning a holiday park in this scenic part ofCumbria, just over the Lancashire border.

In the event, the park enterprise proved evenmore commercially buoyant thanmanufacturing, and after Billy passed away, his son Frank decided to concentrate entirelyon developing Silverdale.

On what was formerly just over 100 acres ofgrass and scrubland, the park as it is todaybegan to take shape with extensivelandscaping and the introduction of newfacilities.

By the 1970's anoutdoorswimming pooland café hadbeen built, and in1999 the mainbuilding wasremodelled toinclude a newswimming pool, gym, restaurant, bar and shop.

The new leisurefacilities, combined withthe picturesquelocation of thepark with its spectacular view acrossMorecambe Bay, soon won Silverdale anational reputation for holiday excellence.

Today the business provides employment foraround 135 people, largely recruited from thelocal area where job opportunities are scarce, forcing some to move away from theircommunities.

Another local benefit, said Michael, is thatSilverdale offers holiday homes for sale, which don't impact on nearby housing stockby forcing up prices and creating "ghostvillages".

Under Michael's stewardship, the businesshas continued to expand and now comprisessix parks in Cumbria and North Lancashire, allhave which have benefitted from investmentin their facilitates.

The aim, he says, is to ensure that thecompany's name on every park it ownsremains synonymous with first-classsurroundings and good value holiday homeownership opportunities.

Silverdale, however, remains the company'sflagship – and prospective buyers of holidayhomes are often advised that they must joina waiting list until a unit or plot becomesavailable.

Like his father Frank, who passed away at thestart of 2015, Michael is a firm believer inrunning his business along sustainable linesand safeguarding the natural environment.

Botanist David Bellamy describes the park asa "glorious wildlife wonderland", andSilverdale has for many years been theholder of his prestigious Conservation Awardat its top gold level.

Ensuring that the park's natural heritageremains unaffected bychange is a priority forMichael – but in otherrespects, he is a keenadvocate of embracingnew ideas and consumerexpectations.

One recent example hasbeen the introduction ofnew top-end timber-builtcamping pods:

"We noted a few yearsago the traction thatcamping pods weregaining, and suspectedthat the trend would befor these to evolve in

terms of what they provided guests," saidMichael.

"I don't think that the simple concept of awooden tent is now a sufficient draw forholidaymakers who want a glampingexperience – there must be an element ofpampering involved.

"That's why the units we've chosen forSilverdale are closer in refinement to amodern caravan holiday home or lodge, anddon't involve sacrificing any creaturecomforts.

"Pods appeal to a very wide age range, butespecially to younger couples and familieswho want to enjoy the notion of a closerconnection with nature in the great outdoors.

"In fact, we are finding right across the park

that the type of experiences this industryoffers is appealing increasingly to newgenerations of couples and parents.

"The continuing popularity of motorhomes, for example, is attracting a younger marketof park holidaymakers, some of whom startby hiring and then go on to buy their ownvehicle.

"A while ago it was thought that touring wasrepresented by an ever-ageing customerbase, but for some years now we've seenthat trend go in to reverse.

"The same is true of holiday home ownershipwhich was once typified by mature coupleswith more leisure time on their hands, perhaps because their children were nowgrown up.

"Today, though, we often see those childrenthemselves investing in a holiday home sothat they and their young families can enjoyfrequent breaks throughout the year.

"But if the average age of park users is goingdown, expectations are certainly increasing –and I think businesses need to be aware ofthis if they are to carry on competingsuccessfully.

"The quality of the surroundings and facilitiesis obviously important, but so too is thestandard of hospitality offered by the parkand the welcome it provides.

"It's interesting that despite the millions wehave spent on Silverdale over the pastdecade, guests who review our park on-lineoften praise our friendly atmosphere as muchas anything else.

"Much credit for this must go to our parkteam, and is reason why our investments inSilverdale will continue to include asubstantial provision for staff training anddevelopment," said Michael.

Indoors or Outdoors – A World of Fun

That’sentertainmentThat’sentertainmentHoliday Parks and entertainment go together like strawberriesand cream. We may have moved on from bonny baby andknobbly knees competitions but the need for family fun has notlessened in the slightest.

Park Holidays UK announced this month that it is spending £2million in 2016 to lay on morning, noon and night entertainmentto guests as part of their holidays. They have hired the services ofcult legend Timmy Mallett as well as providing a free programmeof activities, games, and live shows. These will includePaddington Bear who will host a marvellous marmalade picnic

for the kids, the darts gameshow Bullseye and Live Pro Wrestling.

Of course, not every park has the budget to provide starperformers and a furry mascot can build a following just asenthusiastic for a fraction of the price! So we have rounded up anumber of other forms of entertainment that will not only keepfamilies happy in the sun but on less temperate days as well.Bowling, for example, is a brilliant way to boost bar sales andyou would be surprised at how little space is needed. Every parkshould consider children’s rides and a proper playground as well.Because when the kids are happy, the parents are too.

Managing director Paolo Sidoli states, "Whenwe first started presenting our equipment tothe UK in the mid- 90's the majority of our

clientele were owner-operators of familyamusement centres by the seaside. Over thepast 10-15 years we have seen the growth ofsupply of our equipment to Holiday Parks - asthe focus changed from Caravan Parks toHoliday Parks; and as operators, large andsmall alike, championed their locations asholiday experiences; we have seen ourequipment becoming more prominent.

“The great thing about kiddie rides, especiallyour rides, is that they are proven revenuegenerators and they present a soft andwelcoming image to any holiday park. Theyare easy to maintain and interestingly, they falloutside the scope of the Gambling Act,therefore they are not subject to intensescrutiny or punitive legislation. We havenoticed this sector to be extremely resilientdespite poor weather in the UK in recent years,

competition from foreign holidays, and therules regarding taking children out of schoolduring term. In fact, we have seen the seriousoperators come to the fore as they increasetheir investment in their indoor leisureofferings.

“Most of our equipment perfectlycomplements any entertainment offerings in aHoliday park with Double Pony Express,Tagadisco and Missile being our mostsuccessful models. Attractive, engaging andprofitable these rides bring out the best ofwhat our sector has to offer.

The appeal of driving a vehicleunder your own control is aconcept that never loses appealwith children, and Formula K a fullyUK-based manufacturer of fun vehicles has built a heritage over 30 yearsof bringing this appeal to leisure venues around the world with itsmarket-leading range of vehicles and driving attractions.

In addition to the professional appearance of the vehicles it's importantthat a track is visible, kept attractive and well maintained. If theseelements are in place then the attraction becomes an easy sell to childrenand parents using the park.

An indoor site may typically allocate a 12 x 6 metre footprint whenconsidering a mini car driving attraction with 4-5 cars. For outdoorfacilities, where space is often more readily available, the design can bemore flexible to accommodate higher numbers of vehicles and a moreelaborate layout.

Formula K recently supplied Diggerland theme parks with a combinationof mini-cars totalling 52 vehicles, which will be operated across fourprime UK outdoor locations, demonstrating the versatility of what can beachieved with available space.

The company also has many attractions placed in holiday and recreationalvenues across the globe, and can name Warner Bros, Bourne Leisure'sButlins and Haven sites, Vale Holiday Parks as well as the Pontins groupas valued clients.

As well as these big players; Formula K finds as much satisfaction insupplying smaller private venues with a product that will addentertainment for the park’s guests and revenue to the park operators.

Formula K prides itself on the reliability of its vehicles. Having cars thatcan be relied on to be available for use with minimal downtime is thelifeblood of any successful driving attraction.

Probably the single biggest selling point of Formula K’s products is thebattery run-time. All the cars operate on a highly efficient 24v powerdelivery system, and voltage regulated charging system, meaning that innormal operations a battery changeover is unnecessary, and charging isas simple as plugging each car to a normal power supply and leavingovernight, ready for the next full days operation.

Without question the cars are built for longevity. It is not unusual formany operators to continue to use the same vehicles for 10 or moreyears.

The all-important cosmetic appearance can bemaintained in all environments, the bodywork is

self-coloured requiring only an occasional polishand the graphic work is colourfast, so

there is never a need for a weary orscruffy looking attraction; even

after many years.

Climbing Walls have become a staple attractionat many venues looking to offer fun activitiesfor both children and adults. InnovativeLeisure’s variety of climbing walls availablecontinues to grow with the most recentaddition being the fun and colourful KlimeWallz range. These walls are often referred toas “fun walls” and are seen by many as a newand exciting twist to the climbing wall.

These walls can be combined to create anappealing climbing environment to suit spaceand budgetary requirements. Each design isavailable in a variety of different sizes to suit atarget age range and ceiling height. TheClimber Timer upgrade on these walls adds acompetitive edge, while the illuminated LEDhandhold upgrade adds ever more eye-catching detail to the walls.

For confidence in safety all Innovative Leisure’sclimbing walls utilise hydraulic auto belays andto give operators total peace of mind, comecomplete with ADIPS inspection and full UKNAFLIC design review. The walls are suitablefor both indoor and outdoor operation.

“We’ve been supplying fun climbing attractionsto a host of different customers throughout theUK since 2000,” said Innovative Leisure’smanaging director Phil Pickersgill. “They are ahugely popular attraction for almost all agesand are ideal for holiday parks and othervenues looking to add a physically challenging, exciting and entertaining activity. CheddarWoods Resort and Spa in Somerset is a goodexample of such an installation, where weinstalled a ‘grip-a-rock’ wall featuring anupgraded finish which is indistinguishable toreal rock.”

Innovative Leisure also supplies SkyTrail HighRopes courses and junior ropes courses, SkyTykes, both attractions again fully certifiedunder ADIPS. SkyTrail High Ropes adventure

courses offer an exciting, adrenaline filled andchallenging experience through an assortmentof different elements, all in total safety via aunique, continuous belay overhead tracksystem. This also allows participants to passone another, which has a crucial impact onhourly capacity by eliminating bottlenecks andqueuing.

Among recent openings has been that at NorthBay Railway in Scarborough, a popular localtourist attraction. The park offers a collection ofimmaculately maintained mini engines, whichtravel to the other side of the bay along thescenic Scarborough coast. And now it also toappeals to a more adventurous audience withthe installation of a Sky Trail High Ropescourse. The double level Navigator takesvisitors far from their comfort zone to face itsmany rope-based activity elements.

Designed and installed by Innovative Leisurespecialist team above the tracks the traintravels directly beneath the course, the SkyTrailoffers a whole new perspective of thePeasholme Park site. Junior Sky Tykes courses are scaled downversions of the high ropes courses and are forchildren aged 2 and 7. Utilising the samesafety harness system for participants, parentsor chaperones are able to walk alongside theirchildren as youngsters move through thedifferent elements.

Among the Sky Tykes installations that havebeen completed are those at three differentCenter Parcs sites in the UK, Longleat Forest,Sherwood Forest and most recently WhinfellForest in Cumbria. All the installations providea 10 pole course with 17 different elementsand a capacity for 20 children at any one time.

Water-based attractions are always popularwith children and Innovative Leisure offers theWater Wars and Downpour Derby products to

cater to this requirement. Water Wars is awater balloon battle game in which playersuse a catapult to fire water filled balloons ateach other while the Downpour Derby putsfour participants into a race to fill waterbuckets above their opponent’s head bycranking a handle. The slowest to crank hastheir bucket tipped on them and is drenched!Recent installations of these attractions include,Spring Barn Farm in East Sussex and FinkleyDown Farm in Hampshire (inflatable WaterWars) and Fishers Farm Park in West Sussexand Crealy Adventure Park in Cornwall(Downpour Derby).

However, the self-catering market has alwaysshown a sense of resilience and asholidaymakers were forced to look for bettervalue in their holidays, the ‘staycation’ factorboomed. A major benefactor was, of course, the holiday park.

In 2016, the phenomenon still breathes lifeand boasts higher figures than pre-recession.This remains good news for holiday parks. With falling oil prices and internationalsecurity issues plastered all over the news,leisure-seekers are more likely than ever toput fuel in their car to go on their holidays inthe UK, especially for short-breaks.

So, with holidaymakers being driven nicelytowards the open arms of UK holiday parks, what are the main issues of the day forholiday park managers?

New behaviour, higher expectations

Guests are more demanding. They have morechoice, more flexibility, and more say in aconnected world. The domestic tourismmarket is also changing demographically. Thegreatest growth areas are the retiree andhigher social group (or ABC1) markets. Thetrend towards staycations is becomingincreasingly concentrated at the upper end ofthe market, while much of the current UKtourist infrastructure is concentrated at thelower end.

Holiday park operators are starting to addressthis shift; many of them are investing inglamping facilities or other luxuryaccommodation and products to encourage anew kind of experience on site. Cateringwith, and selling, local produce is alsobecoming more important, as is promoting‘wellness’ to a growing band of new clienteleby providing, for example, spa days and arange of life-affirming activities.

More online visibility, more connectivity

Holidaymakers now expect to be able tobrowse a holiday on a responsive websitefrom their mobile or tablet. They want to seetop quality, attractive photography and clear,

honest information about what kind ofholiday experience they will get. They alsoexpect to be able to book their holiday onlinethere and then through a clear, responsivebooking engine. And God forbid if adestination doesn’t have WiFi! Holiday parkowners can look into improving theirwebsites and connectivity to dramaticallyreduce turn-aways from potential guests andtherefore any loss of precious revenue.

Operational and administrative overload

If you’re out on the road as much as we are,you will often hear park owners say,“Owning, managing or working on a park is away of life, not a job.” Life is verydemanding; there are copious hours of roundthe clock admin, year-round stress keepingup occupancy levels, producing effectivetargeted marketing, and keeping the siteitself maintained. Getting a good overview ofthe operational status of the business whilekeeping a hand on all the nuts and bolts ofrunning a busy holiday park is paramount toan owner or manager.

So the holiday park environment has becomechallenging; it’s no longer okay just to receivebookings and carry out general maintenanceand upkeep. It’s about really knowingcustomers, nurturing those relationships, planning smarter, constantly innovating andreacting to trends, and providing a gold starcustomer experience.

This is where a good PMS needs to step in,and Anytime Booking fits the bill

Anytime Booking is a PMS (propertymanagement software) that makes lifeeasier for park owners and the very busymembers of staff who work on site, addressing the challenges above.

Designed specifically for this sector, AnytimeBooking is a responsive online booking andsite management software that enablesparks to sell holidays online, market throughother channels such as Trip Advisor,Booking.com and Pitch Up, handle payments, manage reception, reduce admin, reduce

"Not only has Anytime Bookingrevolutionised how I run my business, andkept it open all year round,” says AndrewRadford of Home Farm Camping andCaravanning Park, “an additional andwelcome bonus is that we have had amassive increase in bookings. Before, I wasoften unable to get back to customers soonenough. Keeping track of payments, receipts, who is on site and who is arriving are all sosimple with Anytime Booking – the systemeven sends out email communication, directions and a map on its own!
