An additional dairy market ahead of the herd dispersal

sale saw an easier trade to recent weeks. However, the

easier trade was also reflective of the average quality

forward. Overall, top price was achieved by Messrs. S R

Gilbert & Son of Sheepwash, with a smart freshly calved

heifer ‘Bocaddon Mercury CT Amie’ who was freshly calved

yielding 33 Kgs and sold at £1,950. This heifer was closely

followed by a heifer from Wills Bros. Ltd which had

calved in early June yielding 30 Kgs and sold at £1,900.

Messrs. W A Hooper & Son from Okehampton, sold

another early June calved heifer ‘Inwardleigh Cooper Daisy

Lin’ at £1,850.

A good entry of milking type cows topped at £1,800 for

‘Bocaddon Penmanship DF Violet’ a freshly calved second calver. Third calvers topped at £1,750 for ‘Bocaddon Fuel-

Up SG Bella’ both from the Gilbert family of Sheepwash. An in-calf heifer from Rachel Leonard of Chumleigh sold

at £1,400 and a dry cow from Ivor Barkwill from Milton Abbot sold at £1,250. Dairy heifer calves saw an easier

trade topping at £160 for a cross bred calf from Messrs. D & W Bowman, Helston.

The dispersal sale of the Trenhayle herd of mainly pedigree Ayrshires on behalf of Messrs. Roskilly & Sons from

Hayle in Cornwall, attracted a large crowd of buyers from all over the country keen to secure their long established

blood lines. The herd had been farmed on a very simple grass system and were milked once a day only, averaging

5,000 Kgs. The cow section topped at £1,523 for a dry cow ‘Trenhayle September 10’ due to calf in October with

her fourth calf to ‘Hilltown Oblique’. The dry cows had a flying trade with many selling in excess of £1,300 and an

overall average for the dry cows of £1,271. The milk section topped at £1,418 for a non-pedigree June calved heifer.

A real feature of the sale was an outstanding group of in-calf heifers and these had a flying trade topping at £1,575

for a ‘Oblique’ heifer due to calf in October to ‘Whitecroft Doctor Foster’ (sexed semen). The in-calf heifers due

before Christmas averaged a very impressive £1,388.

The young stock were a real credit to the Roskilly family and sold to great demand with bulling heifers topping at

£861 for a group of five, and yearlings selling to £630 for two groups of four heifers. Weened calves sold up to

£389. Cattle travelled away from Holsworthy to all corners of the west country and to Yorkshire! Can we take

this opportunity of thanking the Roskilly family for their instructions and we wish them all the best for the future.
