PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
PLAYGROUND UPGRADE A large area of our playground will be upgraded in the near future. This will involve the installation of significant equipment and landscaping to create a variety of outdoor play, adventure and learning areas. I look forward to providing you with full details and photos soon after the holidays. This work will be half funded by NSW Government Community Grants which have been gained by our P&C. I’d like to thank and publicly recognise the great work our P&C has done over recent years in applying for and acquiring these grants, which also funded our terrific “Nature’s Nook” area. The other half of the cost of these works will be met with school funds which have been saved for this purpose over recent years.
YEAR 6 CANBERRA & SNOW EXCURSION
My sincere congratulations to all Year 6 students who attended this 3 day excursion last week. All reports from staff attending were that your behaviour and attitude was absolutely excellent throughout the entire time. Very well done Year 6. You have brought great credit to yourselves, your families and your school. You have also repaid your teachers who put so much effort into organising and attending the camp. I very much thank Mrs Flood for her outstanding work organising the camp and to all Year 6 staff who assisted and willingly undertook the huge responsibility of attending and managing the three days. We are very fortunate to have staff who are so willing to go “above and beyond” to provide them wonderful experiences for our students.
DRAMA ENSEMBLE I am delighted to report that our Drama Ensemble has been selected to perform at the Ultimo In the Spotlight Drama Festival to be held at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) on 8th August. The ensemble has been selected following their outstanding performance at Primary Play Day recently. Congratulations to everyone involved. This is a great honour and achievement. Well done!
YEAR 3-6 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL This was an outstanding success this week. All students participated with great enthusiasm and supported their house. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Special congratulations to those students who will now go on to represent our school at the Liverpool PSSA Zone Carnival on 28th August. Many thanks to Mrs North for her outstanding overall organisation and her willing team of helpers, to all staff for their work on the day, to all parent and supporters and to students from Holsworthy High for their great help.
STATE HOCKEY REPRESENTATIVE Huge congratulations to Kaitlin O’Dwyer who has been selected in the NSW PSSA State Hockey Team. This is a tremendous achievement, to be selected from students from all NSW. Well done Kaitlin! We are very proud of you. Kaitlin will compete in the Australian National Championships to be held at Bendigo VIC next term. Please look out for information as to how we will be supporting Kaitlin.
PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Thank you to all parents/carers who came to interviews last night or will be tonight. It is great to know the vast majority of parents/carers have made appointments. As always at Holsworthy Public School, the education and welfare of our students is dependent upon effective communication and understanding between home and school.
SCHOOL COMMUNITY CHARTER: COLLABORATIVE, RESPECTFUL
COMMUNICATION This week’s key message: “We prioritise the wellbeing of all students and staff”. Peter Ward Principal
MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
On Tuesday 18 June the local finals for the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking
Competition were held at Panania Public School. Grace Chacko, 3/4C and Jade Vickers, 3/4C
represented Stage 2 and Surabhi Marathe, 5/6N and Akshara Jayalakshmi, 5/6N represented
Stage 3. All students had to present their prepared speech and then do an impromptu speech.
Jade was awarded a Highly Commended for her skills in the Stage 2 finals. Congratulations to all
the students who competed, each of them presented insightful and engaging speeches about the
challenges facing our multicultural society today and represented our school with pride.
YEARS 1-6 PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
During Term 3, all students in Year 1 to Year 6 will present a prepared and impromptu speech to their class as a part of the public speaking program. Some students will be chosen to represent their class in the grade competition. The best speaker in each stage will go on to the district competition to represent our school. We encourage students to prepare their speeches during the school holiday break as they should be ready to present them in class during Week 2 Term 3.
YEAR 6 – CANBERRA/SNOWY MOUNTAINS EXCURSION
Year 6 students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the National
Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs
with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government
recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the National Capital as part
of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion
the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and
Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.
Year 6 Teachers.
YEAR 6 CAMP
On the 24th, 25th and 26th June 2019, Year 6 went on a camp to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains. On Monday 24th, we visited the New Parliament House and the Old Parliament House. We got to see both chambers (House of Reps and Senate) in the New Parliament House. We also got the chance to see the Queens Terrace and the Main Hall. We did a role play to see the process of the path of a Bill, we were debating whether ads should be banned during children’s programmes. At old Parliament House we did an educational programme called “Who’s the boss” learning about past Prime Ministers and events that impacted democracy and visited the Senate. Two lucky children got to act as the Governor-General. At the Australian Electoral Commission we learned about voting rights and the preferential voting system and participated in a mock election. At night we had a disco, the teachers wanted to wear us out. When we got back to our cabins everyone fell asleep instantly. On Tuesday 25th, we spent the morning at the snow, throwing snowballs and making snowmen. One thing that most of the students enjoyed was covering Mrs North head to toe in ice and having a snowball fight with their teachers. After we came back, we had free time and got the chance to play in the games room. There were many table games such as football, table tennis and air hockey. After dinner, we had a games night with the other school. We played games against other teams and had a fun time.
On Wednesday 26th, we departed our accommodation and headed to the War Memorial and Questacon. At the War Memorial, we read the Roll of Honour, listened to stories about bravery and comradeship of the soldiers, nurses and service animals. Some of us even saw a 119 year old piece of chocolate sent by the Queen to the soldiers. After lunch, we visited Questacon and experimented with science and technology. We saw a cloud machine which showed the streaks of radiation caused by alpha, beta, gamma and neutron particles. Some things I enjoyed the most were the free fall slide, the robotic air hockey game, the Speedball ball speed measuring device and the earthquake simulator. After Questacon we travelled back to school. It was a long, tiring but awesome camp!

100 DAYS SMARTER –“Dress up as someone or something to do with the
number 100”
We are having a Maths Fun Day on Thursday 25 July (Term 3, Week 1). Students can dress up
and will participate in activities that celebrate the number 100. This can be as simple as wearing
an item of clothing that has 100 sequins or a ribbon that is 100cm long. Some other suggestions
might be to dress as a cricketer who has scored a century of 100 runs, a centenarian who is 100
years old or a Dalmatian dog that has 100 spots. Each grade will participate in different activities
integrating skills in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). There is no cost
for this activity. We can’t wait to see what our students come up with!
