The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home, and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 27 August and 26 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au. We were overwhelmed to have raised $1350 through gold coin donations. Well done to Mrs Palmano for coordinating the event. Thank you to the Holsworthy community for your generosity and support. The next fundraiser for the farmers will be the P&C run discos on September 21. NUMBER CRUNCHERS Connells Point Public School hosted the 2018 Number Crunchers Grand Final. This involved students from as far as Newcastle, Wollongong and the Blue Mountains attending. It was a brilliant spectacle of mathematical minds in action, with students mentally calculating answers to complex problems, reciting Pi to over 800 decimal places, and solving Rubik’s cubes in less than 30 seconds. Congratulations to our students who attended this day accompanied by Mrs North. Our students represented our school proudly once again. Well done to Harshitha Srinivasan, Fayyad Ahmed, William Dinh and Jamie Hao. Jamie came third in the Pi challenge and William came 10 th overall.

PUBLIC SPEAKING This week, our school’s Public Speaking finalists participated in the Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 competitions. This included the presentation of both prepared and impromptu speeches. The students were well prepared, spoke confidently and used informed and relevant content. Congratulations to all of the finalists who did exceptionally well. The names of the winners and those students who were highly commended will be announced later in the week. The standard of the speeches is a reflection of the strong speaking and listening programs that are being implemented in our classrooms and the explicit teaching involved.

CONTACTING THE SCHOOL If at any time you have concerns in regard to your child’s attendance, academic performance, wellbeing, or any other issue we encourage you to speak to your child’s teacher as a first point of contact. Please be aware that the classroom teacher may not be available to speak to you first thing in the morning (unless an agreed meeting is arranged), as they may be on playground duty, be preparing their classroom for the day or settling children into the classroom. If you would like to discuss an issue with the grade supervisor or the Principal, please contact the office for an appointment. We are happy to discuss any concerns that arise, so that we can work together to support your child’s education at school.

DISTRICT SPELLING BEE Congratulations to Samaira Zaman of class 4T who today won the Stage 2 district spelling bee competition and to Aaron Chacko of class 5/6A who won the Stage 3 competition. What an outstanding achievement! Well done!

SOCIAL SKILLS To support our academic programs at school, we also implement programs to support student’s wellbeing. These are designed to assist students in getting along with others, following rules, conflict resolution and resilience. These programs include: PEER SUPPORT – The Peer Support program is peer led approach to enhance the mental, social and emotional wellbeing of young people enabling them to make informed and skilled contributions to their communities. This program has a different emphasis each year. The focus for 2018 has been Resilience. POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR for LEARNING (PBL) – Is a whole school approach to creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate in which students can learn, develop, and be successful and productive. It promotes positive student behaviour to help students become safe and respectful learners. BOUNCE BACK – This program is about general wellbeing, how to get along with others, understanding and dealing with issues. There is a strong focus on cooperative learning approaches & educational games to build positive relationships, positive emotions and teach social-emotional skills. The social and emotional knowledge, skills and concepts in Bounce Back are integrated with academic content wherever possible.

NETBALL All of the netball teams had a wonderful season. Both senior teams made the finals while the junior teams kept learning their skills and improving each week. The teams all showed great sportsmanship throughout the season with both play and their attitude to sport. The Senior A netball team finished the year off without ever having a loss. It was a fabulous grand final, with the girl’s winning the local derby against Wattle Grove 32 – 17. Well done to of our netball players!

Mrs Corbett and Mrs Palmano

HOCKEY Both junior and senior hockey teams had a great season and were consistently given positive feedback for their sportsmanship throughout the year. The junior team came together well in the grand final against Newbridge Heights and played an excellent game however were only just defeated in a close match, with only one goal in it. The senior team finished at the top of the ladder coming into the finals and played the Dalmeny 1 team in a nail biting Grand Final, but couldn’t manage to score against them leaving the game as a nil all draw. Both teams should be commended on their performance on the day as well as their efforts throughout the season. Well Done!

Miss Grayson

RUGBY LEAGUE Junior rugby league had a number of players who were playing rugby league for the first time. They finished the season one win outside the semi final positions, improving significantly throughout the season. This team had 10 players who will be eligible for the juniors again next year. The senior team finished the season in fourth place. In the semi finals they played extremely well to beat an undefeated Casula side before meeting Hammondville As in the grand final. Unfortunately, the side lost the final but are to be congratulated on a very successful year. Well done to both teams!

Mr Carr

BOYS SOCCER HPS Junior soccer teams have had a great season. In particular the Junior B’s won all of their games this season in the lead up to the Semi Finals. Both Junior team’s attitude towards each game were very positive. They worked well as a team and never gave up, even when behind they always kept trying their best. The seniors faced a very challenging, very well organised opposition draw. They lost a couple of games early in the season but really found their stride during term 3 where they had a winning streak of 4 games in a row, including beating the 2nd best team in the competition convincingly. In the end both Junior A’s and Seniors finished up in 5th place in their respective competitions. Junior B’s finished 3rd in their competition after drawing with Dalmeny in the Semi-Final. All teams should be congratulated on their attitude and effort throughout the season. Well done!

ZONE ATHLETICS ON Wednesday 29 August, 47 students represented HPS at the Liverpool Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival held at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium. The weather was kind to us and it was a great day filled with running, jumping and throwing. There were some outstanding achievements all round and the students are to be commended for their outstanding behaviour and sportsmanship displayed throughout the day. Some of the highlights of the included Christopher Bugeja breaking the Zone discus record throwing 30.70m and Ross Arbis’ combined efforts in a number of events

COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOL EQUIPMENT Last week we received a very big delivery of brand new sports equipment for our school. Earlier in the year our school community collected over 75 000 vouchers as part of the Coles Sports for Schools program. This translated to over $3150 worth of brand new sports equipment to be used by our students.

Some of the equipment has been ordered to update PSSA kits whilst the remainder will be used specifically in the K-2 and 3-6 physical education programs.

We are very excited to have so much equipment to use in our school and want to say a very big thank you to all who collected vouchers for this.

FRUIT AND VEG MONTH Fruit & Veg Month is a health promotion program for NSW primary schools that puts a positive focus on fruit and vegetables. The program is supported by NSW Health. Last week, our students celebrated Fruit and Veg month by eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables for Munch & Crunch. A colour was assigned for each day of the week and a raffle was held every day rewarding students who brought in a fruit or vegetable that matched the colour of the day. Congratulations to our winners who each received a $5.00 canteen voucher and well done to all students who participated!

Green is Good! 4P clearly agrees!

Events Committee chaired by Candice Taylor, Second Hand Uniform Shop Committee chaired by Kylie Szymanski, and School Grounds Committee chaired by Richenda Goodbun.

If you are interested in joining this committee or one of the other Committees, please contact the P&C at [email protected].

LOST PROPERTY

Labelled Clothing

Every Friday, P&C volunteers collect, sort and return all labelled clothing that is found in the Lost Property tubs that are located outside most classrooms. These items are then returned to the student via the Office, usually the following week.

Unlabelled Clothing

If the clothing is not labelled, the item is kept in the P&C room in a “Lost Property” tub. Students and parents are welcome to look through this tub on Monday mornings or Friday afternoons when the P&C 2nd Hand Uniform Shop is open.

At the end of the term, these unlabelled items are washed and donated to the P&C 2nd Hand Uniform Shop.

The P&C Term 3 Disco will be held in week 9, on Friday 21 September. The theme of the DISCO is “On the Farm”, to help raise awareness for the farmers who are doing it tough now due to the draught.

For this occasion, ticket prices have been increased to $8, so $1 from every ticket will be donated by the P&C to the Buy a Bale foundation.
