PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
GREAT LEARNING HAPPENS AT OUR SCHOOL
I have had the pleasure of visiting and spending time in a number of classrooms over the past few weeks.
The students with whom I have spoken have a clear understanding of what is expected of them in their
learning and what they need to do to progress. This means teaching is explicit, high expectations are
established and students are up to the challenge. Please be aware that teachers are also absent from their
classrooms from time to time deepening their knowledge and learning about new resources to support
student learning.
HARMONY DAY
Thursday is Harmony Day. This year’s theme is Everyone Belongs. I am pleased to say that at Holsworthy
PS, students show great respect for individual difference, acknowledging everyone has a different story to
tell. On Thursday students are invited to wear orange colours or they may come in cultural dress instead of
our normal school uniform as a sign that we acknowledge everyone belongs at our school. Students may
also bring a plate of food to share with their class. It promises to be a wonderful day.
VALIDATION In 2019 Holsworthy Public School will take part in an external validation process. This process occurs every five years in government schools and involves an external validation panel reviewing our school’s self assessment against the School Excellence Framework. The panel works with school leaders to look at the evidence sets provided by the school and reflect on our progress in the domains of Leading, Teaching and Learning. This is a very comprehensive process and we will share our feedback with the community at the conclusion of this process. POLICE SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER
Recently we have a Police School Liaison Officer visit our school and speak to all students K-6. The sessions
highlighted important school values focusing on being respectful towards everyone, including teachers and
peers, treating people the way you would like to be treated and a strong anti-bullying message. Talks also
focused on using social media in the correct way, what age students need to be to engage in certain social
media and to be cyber safe and cyber smart. Holsworthy Public School is an outstanding school and we
hold very high expectations for all our students.
UPDATE PHONE AND ADDRESSES
Can we please ask again for all parents to update their addresses and their phone numbers if, or when, they change. I understand that the school can be the last place you think of to update but for our records we need this information. It is imperative that if we need to contact you at any time that we have a current number. Thank you so much for your co-operation.
SAFETY ISSUES STAFF CARPARK Our staff carparks are for STAFF ONLY and this is clearly stated as such on our signage. Some people are
still not following school requests or the actual road rules and laws. There are areas around the school
where parking can be accessed. Students are also being dropped off in the bus lanes and exiting from cars
on the roadside. Please be aware that parking rangers will be patrolling the area for the safety of all our
community. Again, thank you for your co-operation.
BIKE /SCOOTER SAFETY Bike riding and riding a scooter is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. In Australia, helmets are compulsory
for riding bikes and recommended for riding scooters. Wearing a helmet will help protect your child against
serious head injuries.
All students who ride a bicycle to school are required to wear a helmet. Wearing a helmet on a bike helps
protects face, head, and brain.
Students are required to walk their bikes and scooters once they enter the school gates and when leaving
at the finish of the school day. Students who continue NOT to follow these simple rules will be asked not to
bring their bikes and scooters to school.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Did you know that if students miss as little as eight days in a school term, by the end of primary
school they will have missed an entire year of education?
If you are experiencing difficulties with getting your children to school, please let us know. You can speak
to your child’s classroom teacher, an executive member, or even the front office staff about how we may
assist you. Our aim is to fix attendance issues as soon as they arise.
Why is regular school attendance important?
Regular school attendance will help your child succeed later in life. Attending school every day makes
learning easier for your child and helps children build and maintain friendships with other children. If your
child doesn’t learn the basic skills in the early years of school, they may develop learning problems in later
years.
Why is arriving at school on time important? Arriving at school on time:
Ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the
day when they are most alert.
Helps your child to learn the important of punctuality and routine.
Gives your child time to greet their friends before class and therefore reduces the opportunity for
classroom disruption.
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to the school the same way as
other forms or absence.
When is being away OK? Sometimes it’s hard to decide when it is acceptable to keep your child home from school. Below is
a list of acceptable and unacceptable examples:
Acceptable Unavoidable medical, specialist or dental appointments (Try to encourage appointments outside school hours, or close to home time.) Religious holidays Urgent family situation (E.g. funerals) Sick or infectious disease (E.g. conjunctivitis)
Unacceptable Shopping Sleeping in Working around the house Minding siblings/other children/older relatives Minor family events (birthdays) Hair cuts Weather conditions: Rainy/Windy/Hot Frequent car problems Frequent late train/bus Airport/Visitors from overseas or other states Other member of the family is sick Hospital Visits to relatives or friends
NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE
On Friday the 15th of March, Holsworthy Public School held two assemblies, one for infants and one for
primary students, in recognition of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The purpose
of this day is to raise awareness of issues surrounding bullying and respect and what students can do if
they experience bullying. These assemblies reinforced strategies provided within PDHPE lessons on how
to recognise, respond to and prevent bullying. As well as this, students made a pledge to treat everybody
kindly. In addition, Constable Kennedy from the Liverpool Police Department delivered a presentation to all
students about safe and respectful behaviour at school, in the community and when using technology.
In order to get the whole school community on board with the very important topic of respect, each grade
contributed towards a creative display in the hall. This display continues to promote positivity and to treat
everybody equally and fairly. Furthermore, on Monday the 18th of March, students engaged in the ‘Saving
Lil and Archie’ show which further reinforced this theme. Students thoroughly enjoyed the show and related
the content to issues which may arise within their lives.
We would like to thank Constable Kennedy and the Liverpool Police Department for their time in educating
our students and promoting a safe and positive environment. We would also like to thank the students of
Holsworthy Public School who conducted themselves in an appropriate and respectful manner in all of these
events.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADER’S DAY CONFERENCE
At the conference we met many famous and inspiring people who told us their stories and taught us
important lessons. The people who talked to us were Tim Diamond, the Cotton On Foundation CEO, Holly
Ferling, a famous women’s cricketer, Cate Campbell, a famous Australian Olympic swimmer, and last but
not least Tamsin Janu, an author of many famous novels. We also had a lot of fun playing games and
learning fun dances with other schools. We had chances to meet and get autographs from the four famous
people who came. At the end, as a reward, we all stood up and sang ‘Baby Shark’. Overall, it was a great
experience and we all had tons of fun.
Lalit Bandaru and Aleea Thomas (Parliament Ministers)
SAVING LIL AND ARCHIE
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 enjoyed the Saving Lil and Archie performance on Monday. The
message of the show was that lack of sleep and hours of screen time make unsettled people, who are
unable to make positive connections with the real world.
ANZAC DAY CEREMONY Our annual ANZAC Day ceremony will take place on Friday 12 April 2019 at 10:15am. Parents and members of the community are very welcome to attend. Students are encouraged to bring flowers to school to lay under the flag post.
Mrs Lenton, Mrs Wray and Mrs Murdoch
TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT SURVEY
This Term our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. These surveys are produced and managed by the Department of Education. They are utilised by schools to survey students, families and staff on a wide variety of aspects regarding school life. Students from Years 4-6 will complete the online survey during Week 10 this term. Further information has been sent home. Should you not want your child to participate please return the non-consent form which was attached to the information previously sent home. Parents/Caregivers will be surveyed later this year.
ABORIGINAL STUDENT AFTERNOON TEA
On Tuesday 19 March Aboriginal students, parents and family members attended an afternoon tea to
meet casually with their child’s teacher. We were fortunate to have our Aboriginal Education Liaison
Officer Carol Brown in attendance as well. This was an opportunity for parents and teachers to
collaboratively set goals for the students and discuss their interest and abilities. It was great to see parents
and family members at the afternoon tea, building on the partnership between school, family and the
community.
READING AND COMPREHENSION TIPS
To help your child become a more effective reader suggest some of these strategies.
Predicting – use information from the text, images or your own experience to try and predict what might happen next, how characters might react or what the outcome will be.
Questioning – ask and answer questions about the text to help children understand the meaning of the text.
Monitoring – if something doesn’t make sense as you read it, stop, reread and think or discuss what you’ve read to understand the meaning.
Visualising – it can help to paint a picture in our head of things being described or explained in a text – it helps bring the text to life.
Making connections – compare what you are reading to: o something in your own life o another text you have read or watched o something happening in the world.
Summarising – notice the most important things in the text and use your own words to describe what you have read.
WRITING TIPS
All writing has a purpose. Make sure your child is thinking about who they are writing for and why. For example, there’s a difference between writing a letter to a family member when on a holiday and a tourism brochure or story or film set in the same location.
Read your child’s writing or get them to read it to you. Praise them for having a go at writing words that are new to them.
Encourage writing at home by:
ask your child to keep a diary of special events such as a diary or blog have you child label photos or pictures with captions make notes, letters and stories regularly

Paper & Equipment Levy for 2019
Dear Parent / Caregiver
I am writing to request payment of the Paper & Equipment Levy for 2019. Below I have explained what the
funds raised by the payment of this fee provide and thereby illustrate how vital these funds are in the
provision of a high quality education for the students at Holsworthy Public School.
Some of the student requirements paid for by these fees are:
Mathletics: This is an excellent on-line Maths program which our students enjoy and learn from. It provides high quality supplementation of our teaching programs. Students can also access this highly educational resource at home. The school and P&C pays an annual licence fee per student to the provider. Most schools using this valuable program require parents to pay for the annual subscription.
Photocopying cost: We do not use text books other than handwriting and spelling books at HPS. Therefore the copying costs are very high. Other schools use text books which have to be purchased by parents at considerable cost.
Arts & Craft materials: These are high cost items which are rapidly used. However, these items are essential in order to provide a well-rounded education for our students.
Sport / PE Equipment: Also high cost items which wear out with use and have to be replaced regularly.
Library Books & Computer Reference System: This allows our students to access top quality research material. This also requires payment of an annual subscription cost per student.
I trust you can see the essential nature of the requirements above. They assist us in providing high quality
education to your children.
The levy for 2019 is $40 per student or $80 per family (if you have two or more children attending the school).
Please complete the slip below with your child/ren’s name/s and class/s and send it with the money in a
clearly marked envelope to your child’s class teacher or alternatively pay at the office.
Please contact the office if you have already paid the fees this year.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely yours
Tammy Deiri (Relieving Principal)
