This was a great opportunity to meet the teacher and to hear about their plans for this year. Remember, face-to-face parent/teacher meetings can now occur with an appointment – please contact the office or class teacher to arrange this. Stage 2 Incursion During this week we had a visit by an educator from the Georges River Environmental Education Centre who ran an engaging hands-on series of lessons with the students. The students were able to identify some of the native plants in the school environment and created their own pieces of art by mixing their own paint using natural resources. This was a great way to consolidate the content the students have been covering in the classroom. P&C Annual General Meeting On behalf of the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) I am announcing that the Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 18 March 2021 and this will be followed by a general meeting. The meeting will commence at 4pm and there will be an opportunity to attend in person or join the meeting via Zoom. Remember only current financial members are eligible to vote. Opening of Student Parliament This week we were able to hold the opening of our student parliament where the student leaders and class representatives were introduced and welcomed into parliament. Parliament is held every second week and is one of the many ways that Holsworthy PS provides a voice for our students. Easter Hat Parade The school enjoys celebrating the tradition of holding an Easter Hat Parade for students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2. This will occur on the last day of this term (Thursday 1 April). At this stage, parents are still not permitted to attend these school events but we will keep you updated of any changes. We are expecting the students to still be able to parade wearing their hats. I am also told a special visitor may attend the school on that day. PSSA sport It was wonderful to see the students eagerly boarding the buses to take them to PSSA sport last Friday. I was able to get to the AFL venue where the first week was spent developing some skills and understanding the rules to make the matches more enjoyable for the students during the season.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

It was fantastic to see so many parents/carers able to attend the Meet and Connect sessions last week.

The reports from the Zone Swimming Carnival were that our students were exceptionally well behaved. All students tried their best at this higher level and many will be progressing to the Regional carnival. Well done to everyone involved. Strategic Improvement Plan Each school across the state has been tasked with developing a Strategic Improvement Plan for the next 4 years. Last year, the school used data collected from students, parents and staff to develop a situational analysis which is being used to develop the content of the plan for the next 4 years. The school will be looking for ways of sharing our directions with the school community over the next few weeks. Mark Hoppitt Principal

Georges River Environmental Education Incursion

Year 3 and 4 students thoroughly enjoyed their incursion this week. The incursion explored the many herbariums present in our school’s tucker garden and their many uses. Students listened to an Aboriginal story, The Goanna and the Gum Tree, and its significance about only taking what you need from the environment. The students also painted their own gum trees using ochre from rocks and water. The incursion was a wonderful experience that supported our study of Community and Remembrance.

Georges River Environmental Education Centre Incursion

On Monday, after lunch, my class and I went to the History incursion and it was super fun. We were taken by a teacher named Julie and we learnt a lot of things. First, we learnt about the Bottlebrush plant. We learnt that you can make sweet water with it by mixing it with water. I also found out that the Myna bird eats the nectar. Next, we learnt about the Nappy/Band aid tree which we have in our Bush Tucker garden. The bark is used for nappies and band aids, but the Aboriginal people had to make them first. Finally, we made Aboriginal paintings with Aboriginal paint. We used rocks called ochre and rubbed them on the ground. We then mixed the rubbings with water to make paint and used our fingers as paintbrushes.

We had a very good day! By Yahya 4C

Harmony Day – Everyone Belongs Dear Parents/Caregivers, To acknowledge diversity within Holsworthy Public School we are celebrating Harmony Day on Tuesday 16 March. This is a day of cultural respect for all Australians from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many other countries. It includes a variety of class and grade activities where classes will learn about different countries and cultures. Children may wear traditional dress or the colour orange. Due to the Department of Education proactive measures to limit the impact of COVID-19 in our schools, there will strictly be NO FOOD SHARING and NO PARENT CLASS VISITS ON THE DAY.
