Preschool - Room 103 PreK/Kindergarten - Room 105 1st-5th Grade - Rooms 202 & 206 Issue: #78 January 11, 2013 From Pastor Rusty Dear friends, I saw a Peanuts cartoon a few days ago. Linus was telling Charlie Brown that he didn't understand about the New Year. He felt the same as he did in December. He decided that this wasn't really a new year. He concluded that it was a "used" year. Sometimes I think I agree with Linus. I don't really feel any different today than I did a week or so ago. The truth is that saying that December 31st is different from January 1st is arbitrary and a distinction made by and for people. Obviously, other cultures mark the changing of the years at other times during the year. But I do think it is helpful to acknowledge the movement of time in our lives. This Christmas I reflected on the Christmases I have spent since Betsy and I married. Every year we have gathered to open presents on Christmas day in the living room at Betsy's parent's home. I have sat in the same room, in the same corner and in the same chair for the last forty-one Christmases. This year I could not help but reflect on the changing cast of characters that have been present. When we started, Betsy's father was there along with her grandmother and aunt. They are all gone now as is my mother who joined us on a number of those days. None of our children were there in the beginning and Betsy's sister was just starting high school. Now Betsy's sister is grown and we added her husband to the group many years ago. Over time my children have grown to be adults and we added a daughter-in-law seven years ago. This year we welcomed a second daughter-in-law and our first grandchild. That room has become for me like the door in my parent's house where my father used to measure my height periodically and draw a line and write in the date. reminder that I am moving through life even if I don't feelany different from day to day.My life is constantly changing. Betsy and I have lived infourteen different places in those forty-one years. I know thateven my in-laws house will not always be there. But the oneconstant is the presence of God. Every year we read theChristmas story from Luke before we begin opening presents. It reminds us that the world continues to change but that ourGod is close at hand and that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.Happy New Year! It is a new year but there is one and onlyone thing that never changes. That is the God who isrevealed to us in Jesus. On that we can rely. Grace and peace,Rusty

Holy Covenant wants to celebrateDebbie as a wonderful person ANDexpress our appreciation for herdevoted years of service. We decidedthe most fitting tribute to Debbie would be a gathering of herchurch congregation, her choir/handbell friends, and herfamily! We have scheduled the party for Sunday, January13th in the Covenant Center during the Sunday School hourbetween services. There will be food and we hope you all willbe able to attend!! Most things fun cost a little money and this party (andsurprise gift) are no different. We are asking for donations tohelp pay for the party and the gift. Your SPPR committee hasbeen tasked with spearheading this fund raising venture so ifyou are able to donate money for this worthy cause pleasewrite a separate check and drop it into the collection plate("Debbie's Party" on the note) or drop your money off in thechurch office.
