PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Parishioners, F e b r u a r y 1 0 t h w e c e l e b r a t e Ash Wednesday the beginning of Lent, a season of prayer, fasting and alms-giving.

Prayer: We need to learn to listen to God as well as petition. One of the ways of learning this form of prayer is through the sharing of the Word of God. On the Mondays of Lent I will lead a Lenten Scripture Sharing after the 9:00 AM Mass on the Mondays of Lent beginning on February 15th at 9:30 AM in the Baptistery. Do come and join me.

On the Wednesdays of Lent we will provide "The Light is on for you" by offering reconciliation/confession at 6:30 PM.

Fasting: Rice Bowls will be shared this Sunday and on Ash Wednesday. Place a bowl on your kitchen table and have a lesser meal on Fridays offering the savings to Catholic Relief Services (CRS), which 25% of this offering will be used by Holy Family for our Mission Outreach in Africa, Honduras and Haiti.

Also you are urged to join us for Friday Soup Suppers at Knights of Columbus Center off Hoadly Rd.

Almsgiving: Give to the parish; and support the Bishop's Lenten Ap-peal. I ask you to increase the number of donors this year. We need more than 20 percent of our congregation pledg-ing to support Bishop Loverde's many ministries.

May Lent bring home to us the message of Pope Francis for this year of mercy:

"Go forth as heralds of God's mercy"

Blessings, Fr. Gerry Creedon

Vengan y únanse a mí.

Bendiciones, Padre Gerardo

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?’

‘Here I am,’ I said, ‘send me!’” (ISAIAH 6:8)

Every day – in little ways and in big ways –

God asks, “Whom shall I send?”

Whether it is someone to take on a new ministry or

just someone to open a door for a stranger,

God constantly provides doors of opportunity.

The next time you hear God calling,

have the courage to walk through the door and say

“Here I am, Lord.”

2016 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Begins! Go forth as heralds of God’s mercy!!

This weekend every family in our parish will be asked to

complete a Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA) pledge form at

Mass. If you have already donated through the mail or

online or are not able to participate, there will be places to

note that on the form. After reflecting upon the many bless-

ings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider

making a pledge of support to this important appeal that

funds many programs, offices and ministries that serve peo-

ple in need and further Jesus' Mission in our diocese.

A few things to know during Lent...

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE:

On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, all adult Catholics (beginning from age 18) are required to fast and abstain from meat. This means that adult Catholics are limited to one full meal and do not include meat.

On Fridays in Lent, all Catholics who are

at least 14 years old are required to abstain totally from meat and items made with meat.

HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL NEWS

Lenten Season...We use this season of preparation to grow

closer to God through prayer, fasting and service. This year, Holy Family Catholic Church and School will support Catholic Relief Services with CRS Rice Bowl, a family-based program that raises awareness of the issue of world hunger. Our school chil-dren and parishioners received a cardboard Rice Bowl and a Lenten calendar last week, which contains a prayer or reflection for you to say as a family each day throughout Lent, recipes for meatless Fridays and stories of hope from people around the world. Consider activating your Rice Bowl and representing our school on the national participation map at crsricebowl.org. We hope this is a valuable experience for your family this Lent!

Prayer of the Week…. Join us in saying the Lenten prayer (located on your Rice Bowl) as we begin our 40-day journey.

God of all creation we welcome you into our lives in a new

way this Lent. We are ready to serve your people, especially our

brothers and sisters who are in most need. We are ready to live out

your call to mercy.

Through our prayers, fasting and Lenten gifts, may we learn

to walk as one global human family. May we learn to listen to each

other, and in so doing hear the merciful words of Christ. Amen

Divine Mercy Chaplet...During Lent the faculty will have the opportunity to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet daily, Monday – Friday, at 3:30. Please join us in the church if you would like to pray with us.

Stations of the Cross...The school will also pray the Stations

of the Cross on Fridays at 2:15 PM during lent: You are welcome to join us. There will not be Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 5th at 2:15 PM

Farewell…..Our current Middle School Math teacher, Mrs. Katie Lockwood, has left her teaching position due to a military move. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers as they travel to Washington State.

Welcome...Mr. David Lemelin will join our faculty as the Mid-

dle School Math teacher for the remainder of the year. Mr. Le-melin is a retired military officer and former senior executive. He has a lifetime of experience teaching and leading and was twice selected as the US Army’s Teacher of the Year. Mr. Le-melin has also directed major programs that have created cut-ting edge teaching, curriculum development and assessment methodologies for a wide range of learning solutions at all edu-cational levels. He has enjoyed years of experience in coaching youth sports programs. Mr. Lemelin was born and raised in Detroit, but has lived in many locations around the US and the world. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and is a highly decorated combat veteran. Mr. Lemelin’s wife, Brooke, served as an educational administrator for several years in the Prince William County school system. He has two children, his son David, a USMC officer and his daughter Madison, a student at Mary Washington University.

From the desk of Mrs. Judi Peacott,

This week, Kaydee Pupets will delight our preschool Chil-dren with a performance of the 3 Billy Goats Gruff and the Princess and the Pea! This is one of our favorite “in-house field trips” and it should be enjoyed by all! Our 3 year old class is welcome to join us at 10:00 AM on Friday, 2/12 for this special event.

Our program is designed for preschool children, ages 3-5, offering both full-day and part-day programs. We provide a Christ-centered atmosphere and a wonderful, nurturing environment. We are currently accepting ap-plications for the 2016-17 preschool year. To find out more information about our program or to schedule a tour, please contact Mrs. Judi Peacott, 703-670-8161 ext. 314.

Friday Night Lenten Soup Suppers

Once again this year during Lent Holy Family will be having its Friday Night Lenten Soup suppers starting on Fri-day February 12th, 5:30 PM. Because of lack of meeting space at the Church, the dinners will be held at the

John Paul I Columbian Center located at 12965 Trentdale Ave, Dale City. All are welcome.

Each dinner will feature a different guest speaker whose topic will focus on a relevant Social Justice issue, as it per-tains to the Catholic Church.

If you would like to volunteer to sponsor one of our soup suppers by making soup, please contact Debbie White at 703-494-3181 or Larry Pemberton at 703-472-4572 or [email protected].

Though reservations are not required, they are desired for planning purposes. You may sign up by doing so on our web site under “Quick Links”.

Blood Pressure Screening

Why check your blood pressure? About 1 in 3 adults in the United States has high blood pressure (HBP). HBP itself usu-ally has no symptoms. You can have it for years without knowing it. During this time, though, it can damage the heart, blood

vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body. This is why knowing your blood pressure numbers is impor-tant, even when you’re felling fine.

The next Free Blood Pressure screening will be on Sunday, February 14th, in the Baptistery.

Cruise to Bermuda With Fr. Gerry September 18-25, 2016

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a fundraising 7-day cruise to Bermuda aboard the 3-year-old Norwegian Break-away. Fr. Gerry will celebrate daily Mass while we are at sea.

Leaving from New York, this cruise will spend three days in Bermuda to enjoy that beautiful island.

Best of all, Norwegian Cruise lines will donate money to the Knights Charity Corporation based on the number of cabins booked. These funds will enable the Knights to continue to assist in their charity efforts, many of which are tied into Holy Family.

Round trip bus from the Knights home to New York will be available at $75.00 per person.

Book early to be eligible for special perks like unlimited free beverages or dine in the specialty restaurants.

For more information on the cruise, contact Lynda Dodd at 703-670-2329 or [email protected].
