A BASILICA-SIZE THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who helped make the historic Mass yesterday morning, September 8, a memorable success. We celebrated the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the designation of our parish as a Basilica. Happy birthday, Mary! My personal thanks, especially, to Bishop Burbidge for celebrating the Mass with us and blessing the new symbols of our elevation to a Basilica, the ombrellino (umbrella) and tintinnabulum (bell). (Learn more about these symbols via our new Basilica podcast at http://stmaryoldtown.libsyn.com/ and on page 5 of this bulletin.) My gratitude, also, to the many parishioners and parish staff who helped with the countless details for the day and for all of you who attended the Mass and birthday party after Mass for Our Lady! It certainly takes the involvement of the entire parish family to plan and make such an event so wonderful.

A PRAYER FOR PURGING EVIL FROM THE CHURCH

O sweet Virgin Mary, conceived without sin, pray for the Church during this time of great attack. We trust in you, the new “Eve,” to crush the head of this vile serpent, who seeks to so grievously wound God’s Holy Church. By your great faith-filled obedience to the plan of God, you thwarted the evil of the devil’s cunning, and gave birth to our Savior. We beg your assistance in this critical moment, that you would purge our seminaries of all impurity, and raise up holy priests to further the Kingdom of God. May all Bishops exercise their charism of truth, and with strong united voices, prophetically call evil acts by their proper name. May the Holy Father, and all those given authority in the Church, be unafraid to take every necessary action to insure God’s people never have to fear this type of scandal again. May your great maternal affection help all those whose lives have been shattered due to these unconscionable offenses, and help strengthen all those whose faith is wavering by being exposed to such horrific scandal. For all holy priests, clergy and religious, give them courage to carry on with their ministries and not give in to the despair and sorrow which the evil one wishes to sow in their hearts. O Queen of Purity and Mother of all Hope, we place our confidence in your great intercession for god’s people. Amen. — Pedro de la Cruz © 2018 www.CatholicPrayerCards.org

Holy Cards with this prayer can be found at the back of the Basilica.

Oremus pro invicem. “Let us pray for each other.”

On Saturday, September 8, we celebrated the designation of our parish as a Basilica and formally receive two symbols of our special relationship with the Holy Father in Rome: The ombrellino and the tintinnabulum. Only after a church is designated by the Holy See as a Minor Basilica can it be outfitted with these symbols, which will be installed in our sanctuary. The OMBRELLINO is an umbrella or silk canopy of red and gold, the traditional Papal colors. It is commonly opened whenever a pope visits a Basilica. The overall theme of our ombrellino links the year our parish was founded (1795) to the present time. It is hand-embroidered and has eight scalloped edges. Each scalloped edge has a significant date or symbol: December 6, 2017 (the date St. Mary was named a Basilica by Pope Francis); 1795 (the year our parish was founded); the seal of the Diocese of Arlington; the seal of the Basilica; the crest of the Holy Father; the crest of Pope Pius VI, pope when our church was found-ed in 1795; the coat of arms of Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge; and the coat of arms of Bishop John Carroll, Bishop of Baltimore (Alexandria was part of the Diocese of Baltimore when our parish was founded).

The TINTINNABULUM is a bell mounted on a pole and carried during a procession, along with the ombrellino, ahead of the clergy on special occasions. Our tintinnabulum is topped by two crossed keys, referring to the promise of Christ to Peter, “I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven” (Matthew 16:19). The keys also represent the continuous connection of our Basilica to the Holy See. Below the crossed keys are the four symbols from our Basilica seal:

1) A monogram of Ave Maria (Latin for “ Hail Mary” ), symbolizing her patronage of the parish. It also pays tribute to the prayer of the faithful, echoing the “Hail Mary” prayed across the span of the two millennia in the Church. 2) An English frigate (circa 1650), a symbol of the City of Alexandria, the sailing vessel by which Catholics sailed to the New World and the Church sailing over the seas of time with Peter at the helm. Similar ships brought the Jesuit founders of this parish, as well as many Irish and Scottish merchants, to the Port City of Alexandria. 3) Stars on a blue field, taken from the Seal of the Diocese of Arlington. The 10 small stars recall the historical significance of the Commonwealth of Virginia as the 10th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The larger star in the center represents the Blessed Virgin Mary’s patronage over the Diocese of Arlington and the Basilica. In a more profound way, it signifies her Queenship over Heaven and Earth. 4) The IHS monogram, historically used to symbolize the Holy Name of Jesus Christ. Taken from the Greek, it is an abbreviation of the name IHΣΟΥΣ (Jesus). Central to the seal of the Jesuit order, the IHS pays tribute to our founding parish pastors who came from the Society of Jesus.

THIS WEEK September 12 — The Most Holy Name of Mary. A name of honor, a holy name, a maternal name and a name responsive to the needs of the Church. September 13 — St. John Chrysostom. Bishop of Constantinople. Outstanding preacher (his name means “golden mouthed). Defended the poor; sought reform of the clergy. One of four great doc-tors of the Eastern Church. Died September 14, 407. September 14 — The Exaltation of the Cross. Celebrates the dedication in 355 of a round church and basilica erected by Constantine above the emp-ty tomb of Jesus. Both were destroyed by the Per-sians in 614, rebuilt in 626 but again destroyed by the Muslims in 1009. The present Church of the Holy Sepulcher, rebuilt by the Crusaders, was dedicated in 1149. This day also commemorates the discovery of the Lord’s True Cross by St. Helena in 320. September 15 — Our Lady of Sorrows. Com-memorates the Seven Sorrows of Mary: the Presen-tation of Jesus in the Temple, the flight into Egypt, Jesus being lost in Jerusalem, the meeting of Mary and Jesus on the way to Calvary, the crucifixion, the removal of His body from the cross and His burial.

Saturday morning and has helped thousands of men across the country become better sons, fathers, husbands and friends. We will start on September 15 with an exciting all-new program

designed for both newcomers and past participants. In-formation/signup tables will be setup outside in front of the Basilica for this weekend’s Masses. Or to learn more, contact Wayne Cimons at 703.963.5412.

TRAVELING? Visit MassTimes.org for locations and schedules

of Masses throughout the United States.

Purchase tickets online at www.stmaryoldtown.org/square-dancing

Tickets include dinner prepared by Rocklands,

sodas and desserts. Knights of Columbus will be selling wine and beer.

Purchase raffle tickets online or at the event. Door prize drawings throughout the evening. Youths, 13 and under, must be accompanied

by an adult at all times. Proceeds benefit the charitable works

of the Catholic Daughters. For more information, contact Pat Richards at 703.683.1431 or [email protected].

SENIORS’ HALF-DAY OF REFLECTION Sts. Anne and Joachim Society (St. Mary Seniors) will have a half-day of reflection on Thursday, September 20. Begins with the 8 a.m. Mass followed by coffee in the Lyceum at 8:30 a.m. and reflections with Father Hatha-way from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Donation is $10 for non-members; no charge for members. Continental breakfast and lunch included. A brief meeting will follow. Current members and all parishioners ages 55+ are invited. This will also be an opportunity to pay your dues and sign up for upcoming spiritual and social outings. For additional information, contact Barbara Juszczyk at 703.683.6834.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) regular twice-a-month meetings (first and third Tuesdays) have resumed. Note that all regular meetings will be held at 7:30 p.m. at 316 Duke Street, across the street from the Lyceum. All are welcome to join us in Vincentian spiritual reflections and discussions of our experiences help-ing our needy neighbors. We will hold an Open House in the Lyceum Auditorium on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. For more in-formation, contact Jim Larocco at [email protected].

Through September 30, the Knights of Columbus, with the Basilica of St. Mary School Honor Society, are conducting their annual month-long coat drive

to support the local community. Through your generosity we have previously collected more than 300 coats for men, women and youth, providing warmth and

comfort to many through the winter season. Please place your gently used winter coats in the

boxes at the back of the Basilica. A separate collection site is in the lobby of the school.

Children’s coats are particularly needed. The Knights will have the coats cleaned and

distributed to those in need. Thank you for supporting this worthy effort.

HELP WITH FURNITURE DONATIONS ALIVE! needs your help to collect and deliver furniture donations to the less fortunate in Alexandria on Saturday, September 29. Every Saturday, ALIVE! volunteers meet at 8 a.m. at First Christian Church (2723 King Street) and work until about noon. The Basilica of St. Mary will lead the effort on September 29. This is a great way for teens to earn Service Hours and for anyone to give back to the community. Please contact Greg Smith at [email protected] if you can help.
