Home School Distance Learning and Web Conferencing by Brenda McKoy

Welcome to the media presentation on Web Conferencing and Home School Distance Learning1I am part of a Home School Organization called Florida Home School Community. ( FHSC). We service many local home school families throughout Florida. Problem

Decline in enrollment. *Low Student attendance *Lack of Educational Technology

Home School Distance Learning has researched a crossroad in teaching the 21st century home school student. We are faced with declining enrollment and attendance, along with effective ways to incorporate the educational technologies of today into our program.2

ResearchWeb Conferencing

I explored many innovations in Distance Learning and found a resource tool called Web Conferencing. Web Conferencing is an innovative software program that was developed prior to the internet at the University of Illinois, in 1960. It has gone through many evolutions from 1960 till today to form a global connections with the internet that offers virtual classroom learning . 3Instant Access ? The world demanded instant access and the innovation of web conferencing surfaced. Web Conferencing began Rogers innovations development process with Internet structure in place.

THE IDEA ! History of Innovation

Web Conferencing surfaced when the world wanted instant Access. 4Development Stage.PLATO: The Emergence of Online CommunityPLATO was a series of educational computer terminals that originated from the University of Illinois. In the 1960s and 1970s, PLATO contained many features that we take for granted today like e-mail, message boards and online tests. The fourth generation PLATO IV terminal featured a flat (and bright orange) plasma screen that students could touch to answer questions. See video of the innovation by going to the website listed below: http://thinkofit.com/plato/dwplato.htm1972 PLATO IVStudent using a PLATO IV terminal. Image from the University of Illinois.

PLATO was the first of a series of evolutions in Web Conferencing in 1960 at the University of Illinois.5

Implementation stateDuring the implementation stage, from 1973 to 1975 , web conferencing featured Talkomatic, Personal Notes, and the first commercial use of multi-function conferencing system.

In 1973, Doug Brown developed Talkomatic. (Implementation stage) This was essentially the first instant messaging program ever designed, with multiple windows displaying typed notes in real time for several users simultaneously. In 1974, Kim Mast developed Personal Notes, a new feature for PLATO that enabled private mail for users. In 1975, Control Data Corporation set up its own PLATO system in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the first commercial use of multi-function conferencing system. Within ten years, PLATO was being used in over one hundred sites around the world, some with dedicated lines for full-time use.

PLATO was being used in over hundred sites around the world beginning the adoption phase. 71960 -Web conference began at University of Illinois with the invention of PLATO1972 PLATO moved from a mainframe that supported a few users to support over a thousand users.1973- INSTANT MESSAGING- an added feature through a program called Talkomatic, this program offered multiple windows display, typed notes in real time for several users.1974 Web conference adopted for commercial use. It became the first multi-function Web Conference System used commercially.

S CURVE IN Web Conferencing

The S Curve in Web Conferencing began in 1960 and was completed in 1974.8Confirmation stage

In the 1980s web conferencing software needed to adjust to the changes in microcomputers by expanding it capabilities to Lotus Notes released in 1989.9Commercialization ( 1990s) The true blue web conferencing software era

Unlimited applicationIncreased accessibility Reduced ratesShared filesOne to One conferencing

Commercialization period began with the creation of several types of software that was reliable and attainable, offered unlimited applications, increased accessibility to computer privileges, and reduced rates.

10A New Era - Year 2000 OnYear 2000 saw Groove create technology that eliminated the need for user fees and offsite server storage. In 2003, WiredRed Software featured e/pop, a real-time Web Conferencing suite with comprehensive features for all aspects of the industry it was the first installable web conferencing software with no significant install time. The Napster era also developed document sharing abilities which featured advantages of P2P networks. Todays web conferencing standards include voice over IP, (VoIP), with quality digital audio sound it's claim to fame. Inexpensive online communication is re-defining the way business is done, as digital audio solution expand the scope of communication options. Top web conferencing providers of VoIP include Voxwire, VoiceCafe, and HotConference. Adoption : New era 2000 on

In 2000 , the innovation reached full adoption .11Finally, in 2003 the incompatibility issues was resolved and the web conferencing became a desirable innovations.

Persuasion

Finally, in 2003 the future of the internet web conferencing a desirable innovations because many of the incompatibility issues was solved .12Web conferences met with many other competitors that offer clear voice quality and better dial up capabilities. However, Web conferencing was able to overcome the problems and produce Wave Three which offered the public a high quality web conferencing. The birth of web conferencing has launched business into a new age of communication productivity. Diffusion of the innovation

At this point the innovation reached full diffusion .13The early adopters The scientist at the University of Illinois, with the innovation called PLUTO.

The invention of the internet which gave web conferencing attribute of Relative Advantage and Compatibility , The strategy of continue modifications to the device the moved this single mainframe exploratory to a multi fame system that accommodated thousands of users. What was the attributes of diffusion?

The attributes of diffusion were the early adopters ( the university of Illinois scientist), The invention of the Internet , and the strategies of compatibility and advantages of the internet. 14Its Time!

This information is timely because Home School Education has reached its crossroad of success. We need to look off into the horizon for new erodes in student learning that will create effective ways to engage students in authentic learning experiences, through the use of technology , producing life long learners.

HOME SCHOOL VIRTUAL CLASSROOM RESEARCH AND IMPLEMENTATION I researched several websites and organizations that worked with Web Conferencing ( Elluminate Live) in their distance learning programs:* Kimberly Cause, NBCT, M . Ed . , sponsored a Global Symposium called Web Conferencing to Enrich Learning and Connect Globally (2011).* Lee County Private ( Home School) Inc., Kathleen Sprakfka ( Superintendent of Schools)Elluminate Live! Academic Edition . http://www.futureu.com/technology/elluminate.htmlMAKING IT WORK

I conducted further research prior to implementation by attending symposiums and conferences and notable websites that utilized this software Essentially, Elluminate Live is highly resourceful software that would diffuse into Home school Educational Program . 16Furthermore, you will be thrilled to know that with web conference software educators and students around the world would be connected synchronously and asynchronously.

I learned that web conferences and webinars will connect educators and students around the world synchronously and asynchronously.

Decision/implementation/ Confirmation

We need to make the decision to implement this virtual classroom through Elluminate into our Florida Home School Program20The S-Curve The prediction is that we will see increased in student enrollment from 10% to over 30 % within three years .

The prediction is that we will see increased in student enrollment from 10% to over 30 % within three years . 21Adoption

I will be the innovator for this innovations , assisted by Mrs. Daymon, who will demonstrate the uses to the Home School teachers and staff.22We had some home school community members who could not accept the privacy aspect of virtual school. strategies to overcome Laggards resistance We installed privacy software that would only allow community learners access.

Laggards/ Resistance to Adoption

Of course, there will be some Laggards, resistant to this new software tool, because of the privacy issue of the virtual school.. Our strategies to overcome these Laggards resistance is to install privacy software .23Networking-To meet critical mass we need to network with other Home School Organizations ( Roger, 2003, p. 361) ( Triabillity).Training/Ongoing Training - Web Conferencing Companies sponsored ongoing training programs for families and staff ( compatibility).Compare assessment results - with nation-wide home school online communities ( Observability).Attributes for achieving critical mass would be to network with Home School Organizations, Ongoing Training, and compare and Assess results against other Nation Wide Home School Educational programs.

Attributes /Critical Mass

The attributes for reaching critical mass are : Triability , through networking, Compatibility , through ongoing training and research, and Observability, by comparing nation-wide Home School distance programs.24Web Conferencing online home school will be piloted in our Florida Home School Community ( FHSC) to ascertain any adjustments before expanding globally. From Decentralized to Centralized diffusion system of Online Home School Web conferencing

The Change Agent will be the Manager/director of curriculum development . He will work with a team of Educational Technicians to continue to explore , develop, and improve the Distance Learning program.26 To reach critical mass we will form Satellite Home school networks in other states and eventually globally.

Critical Mass

We will form partnerships with Satellite Home School Communities in other states across the state .27

We are embarking on new horizons in educational technological in distance learning. This technology will bridge the gap in our past Home School educational program and students learning. Now our distance learning program will offer lively interaction, promote active student interaction, and offer instructors a wealth of resources. These things will lead to increase attendance and improved student performance.28

With this new technology we have the opportunity to bring the world of learners into our classroom daily.29

In conclusion, the 21st century learning requires all the educational technology available to make it happen Virtual classrooms have been test marked and proven to offer the most engaging learning experiences for students and educators. It is our duty and responsibility to support the best innovations that will bring about the rewards of academic success.
