Why Go Green?

As concern mounts over rising fuel prices, long-term availability of energy, and global warming, companies are turning their attention to areas where opportunities to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions can be found.

Green Is Gr$$n At the smartest companies today, boosting

energy efficiency is no longer an initiative motivated solely by a sense of civic duty

Rather, companies are finding that there is a solid business case for building a more energy-efficient company

In addition to reducing emissions, any fuel-saving effort significantly reduces spending, especially as fuel prices rise

Wide-Base Tires

Began purchasing in 2004, now 100% on tractors and working towards trailers

4%-10% fuel consumption savings* Total fuel purchased for 2009: 1,094,120 gallons Assume 4% savings

1,094,120 gallons * 4% savings = 43,765 gallons saved

43,765 gallons * $3.069 (National Diesel Index, 04/12/2010)^ = $134,314.17 saved annually

* Obtained from Michelin X One testing^ Obtained from the Energy Information Administration

Automatic Tire Inflation Automatically monitors trailer tire pressure Adds air as necessary to maintain optimal

pressure at all times System has an indicator light to notify the

driver and mechanic that the system was activated

Approximately 3% fuel consumption savings

Factory-installed on all trailers purchased since 2005

APUs

Our long-haul drivers must idle – they live in their trucks

Any idling solution must accommodate the driver’s needs

Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) allow drivers to use heaters, air-conditioners, and other conveniences without idling the truck

We have installed Idle-Free™ APUs in 26 of our 30 sleeper trucks

Driver Training:What Drivers Can Do To Save Fuel Drive at lower speeds

Coast whenever possible Consistently make smooth starts Use progressive shifting Limit engine idling Conduct thorough vehicle inspections Limit trailer gap as much as possible
