24-Hour Emergency Care The Hospital for Large is home to the largest veterinary critical care and diagnostic center for horses and farm and fiber animals in New England. The hospital provides 24-hour intensive care, medical and surgical services by its board-certified veterinary specialists in Internal Medicine and Critical Care in its state of the art facility. Dr. Daniela Bedenice is also the only board-certified specialist in Large Animal Emergency and Critical Care in New England. Emergency service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. General Diagnostic and Surgical ServiceBoard-certi�ed surgeons, Dr. Thomas Jenei and Dr. Carl Kirker-Head, lead the General Diagnostic and Surgical Service, which oversees a variety of cases and o�ers all types of diagnostic procedures—from nerve blocks to tissue biopsy to CT and MRI—and also performs surgery.

A specialty equine podiatry service is also provided by Dr. Kirker-Head, who works in collaboration with Mr. Eric John and several other regional specialty farriers who provide services to the Hospital for Large Animals.

Internal Medicine ServiceThe Internal Medicine Service, run by Dr. Mary Rose Paradis, Dr. Daniela Bedenice, Dr. Melissa Mazan, and Dr. Nick Frank, o�ers internal medicine diagnostics, therapeutics, and intensive care management for equines, working hand-in-hand with board-certi�ed, on-site radiologists, pathologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, and dermatologists to o�er the best possible care under one roof.

Along with the main hospital, facilities o�ered include an equine neonatal intensive care area, the only dedicated isolation facility in New England, and the only lung function testing facility in the Northeast.

Ultrasound ServiceThe Ultrasound Service is led by Dr. Wade Tenney and Dr. Kate Chope, and includes imaging with the most recently developed Toshiba APL10 300 Ultrasound Imaging System, ultrasound-guided biopsy, tendon and joint imaging, and intra-lesional injection of stem cells.

“Ultrasound-only” appointments allow the clinicians to work directly with primary veterinarians as a team of health care providers for patients. These appointments are convenient for patients that have already been worked up and require an ultrasound of a speci�c area of interest.
