Hello all to the Grand Prix Month, April It has definitely been an exciting month in Motor Sport, and indeed in Melbourne. The Commonwealth games kicked things off before the GP. I should point out that I think Australia is and should be the head of the Commonwealth, and the medal tally only proves it. This is without doubt God's country. (I think I have said that before in this column) In Motor Sport, The Clipsal 500 kicked things off. What an amazing race this continues to be. I don’t think even Spa's annual touring car race can compete for spectacle with the site of 600 horse power touring cars jumping the kerbs at Senna just amazes me. All four wheels off the deck. How they can do that and make it through a 250km race without breaking something in the suspension is just awsome. I, like every Holden man in the free world was of course hoping for a Holden victory. Skaifey and Kelly looked good with a dominant qualifying session, not to mention the HSV/Toll Dealer Team cars and of course Tasman. That the Fords got up is a shame, but they have to win sometimes. Lowndes was his usual brilliant self, but Wincup proved, I think that he is made of number 1 status stuff. I said to Jamie at Phillip Island last year that I was sorry to lose him to the dark side, but one day he will be back. Well done to all the Holden boys for having a big go. And well done to the Betta Electrical Team as well. How was Skaifey's hits on the turn 8 wall? The people that call for the turn 8 corner to be changed, should consider how much of a thrill it would be to go through there and get it right. I am sure I don't have the castangas for it at their speed, but oh god, how I would love to belt around there in the VK. I look forward to next years race with great anticipation again, and in fact, Bruce and I discussed a few of us going over next year. So if you might be interested, let us know. The Australian F1 Grand Prix was also a boomer. I loved the tourers most of all, but even the F1's were entertaining. Sorry for Webber to not finish, let alone retire while leading. I hope this is the year he can pull a victory for the first time. My prediction for 2007 is that Webber will be in a Renault F1, I just hope they are still at the height of their powers still. The Dyno day is close and I think Kim is taking the Monaro in for me. We just have to work out how to swap cars on the day. My prediction of the CV8's power on the dyno at the rear wheels will be somewhere around 170kw. When the ute ran up two years ago, it was 196kw, but it had extractors and sports exhaust, the Monaro has nothing. The tip from a source at Holden is we should start to see a few VE mules getting around Melbourne now. (looking a bit like this one I’d be betting! – ed) Production is due to start in late July, early August. I am so excited about this car. It will truly be Austarlia's greatest car yet. Keep in mind that it has bucket loads of US dollars invested in it to prepare the chassis design for a lot more overseas markets than the VT chassis was ever designed for. Safety systems have come in for major attention in this car, with curtain air bags available for the first time, and a much more substantial safety cell. I can only summise that is why the weight of the car is increasing by around 130kg. Thats the rumour anyway. Think of the latest M5 BMW with a boot spoiler and thats what the SS is going to resemble. Only it will be a Holden which makes it better. Busting I am!

I hope you all get a thrill from the member profiles we are going to do each month for the magazine. This month it is Alan Davies turn. Thanks to Dave Davies for adding to and developing the profile. Until next month, remember to leave your mark. Wayne Paola, President.

Hi guys, it’s April the V8s have started, the AGP has been run ending with not one but two broken Ferrari’s. Wasn’t Adelaide a crash fest, turn 8 claimed many victims, poor Murph missed the GP due to badly bent car, and Cam McConvlle’s car looks like it might end up on the scrap heap it’s so badly bent. And what about the heat? The V8 bosses need to look at some way of keeping the drivers cool in extreme heat as the cabins got to around 60 degrees, which is just too much to bear. Some of the crashes and near misses have been attributed to the extreme heat. James Courtney is having a baptism of fire in the V8s with a big hit in Adelaide and more damage at the GP. I enjoyed the GP this year as I had set myself up well to watch the race on the big screen and hear the race commentary on GP radio through FM radio on my phone because last year on turn 6 there was no big TV and couldn’t hear a thing on the PA, so I had no idea what was going on. I was on turn 5 this year and thought I would be in for some action, but to no avail, the curse of Bruce struck again. Turn 6 that I was on last year had quite a bit happen over the weekend this year but had none last year. I liked the new F1 qualifying as it kept the cars on the track for the session and it kept the interest of the spectators, but Friday was a bit of a loss as the F1s spent very little time on the track, Mark Webber only came out in the last 15 minutes. The V8 racing was fabulous with a Holden 1,2,3 in all races Mark Skaife coming second in all races. Steven Richards was impressive in the Jack Daniels Commodore and if they can keep Jamie Wincup at bay for the rest of the year, Holden should do well. Russel Ingall has yet to impress and I think he may have a hard time winning another championship.

Bruce at the GP, and Troy on the circuit I got to meet a Bathurst winner at the GP but not in a nice way, in what was one of the only bit of action we had on turn 5, Brian Sampson (co winner of Bathurst with Peter Brock in 1975) dropped a wheel off the ripple strip, looped his F3 and hit the wall in my spot, we had to remove the car and help him, he was OK but shaken and the car lived to fight the rest of the races over the weekend. Brian is now 72 years young, as skinny as a rake, and fitter than most of us. Hope I’m still racing at his age. The other action we had was a Drof ute did the same as Brian and smacked the wall on the other side of the track and was able to keep going and Mark Winterbottom’s Drof stopped at my point and dropped a sump full of oil on the track, engine change required. I have seen some embarrassing moments at the GP over the years but this was one was the best, on Friday’s F1 track inspection that lovely AMG Mercedes safety car came to a very slow and silent stop right in front of us, the starter motor was grinding away but the big Merc would not fire up. Tim Schenken jumped out of the passenger seat with a very red face, I’m not sure if it was embarrassment or rage, yabbered into his 2 way, called us over to push the car off the track to the comments from the viewers in the corporate stand of “buy a Holden” “ good advertising for

a Mercedes” etc. etc. he and Charlie Whiting jumped into the BMW course car and took off. The next day we were told that someone had forgotten to fill the fuel tank. Troy and big Al had a ball driving the HD around Albert Park in the GP rally demo laps and I believe Kylie rode with Al on Saturday. I watched some practice pit stops on Thursday in pit lane, which was very interesting, got up close with some cars waiting for scrutineering and got some nice pics. Our bank balance is the best it has been for a while and 10 grand by the end of the year is not out of the question. We had $93.00 dollars in the fine tin this year for the Good Friday appeal, so we rounded it off to $100.00, lets see if we can beat this next year. Cheers Bruce

Its good to see the trangressions of club members resulting in money actually going to a worthy cause for a change! For all those guilty people who have passed silver and gold to the dark side in shameless transactions buying parts for their DROF’s during the year (you know who you are, we know who you are, your nasty little habits aren’t totally secret you know!) please keep it up for another 12 months so that we can continue to fine you for the benefit of such a worthy charity!

Friday 14th April 2006 Important Public Notice

Unofficial Official Report

It was revealed late this afternoon, that due to the ‘inappropriate utterances andactivities’ of certain members of an elite association, and the sometimesintentional / unintentional use of a particular automotive manufacturer’s brandname, that this has resulted in certain moneys being ‘secreted’ away frommembers of this elite Automotive Association. These ‘ill gotten gains’ may have been collected and channelled through to arather unusual man, both small in stature, and very quietly spoken, who also hasa preference for the colour orange as part of his attire. Further to this admission, it has also been confirmed, that the man, (dubbed by authorities as the ‘quiet little orange bloke’), had attended numerous meetings on a ‘quiet night of the week’, at a premises, which is well known to authorities and the ‘public at large’ in the South Melbourne area. Often frequenting the ‘said’ premises until late into the night, the little ‘orange bloke’ was seen on many occasions to be collecting, and often soliciting and receiving funds from members of this elite group. It is possible that many members of this ‘club’ may not have been aware of the true nature of the soliciting. (Both, men and women, have been ‘involved in’ or been ‘caught up in’ this ‘inappropriate practice’, it’s been told) A spokesman from the club, who chose only to be known only as ‘Wayno’, conceded, that although this report is accurate and the amount of money is ‘significant’, he secretly hopes this practise will still continue. A report had been prepared to advise the club members, and the public of this situation, and to ‘Appeal’ to the members for help in these matters. Originally this ‘Appeal’ was to be made public on Thursday, but due to a delay, it was made on Friday Authorities said it was a ‘very Good Friday Appeal’. Footnote: The sum of $100.00 has been sent to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal by the HSCCV. courtesy of the little orange, ‘Fines’ Bloke. Thank you, you blaspheming, lot of ‘DROF acknowledgers’

Motor Racing & Rally Report

Hello everyone, What a great start to the motorsport season! V8’s roaring, F1 screaming, and planes soaring, as they should. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the F1 race and sat in corporate surroundings on turn six all day. We were on the top level so we could see over the fence, and had a big screen opposite us to watch all the rest of the action. What a surprise to see Renault win again! Alonso drove the consummate race and never appeared challenged at any stage. Two of the unluckiest guys around must be Webber and Button. Webber out with a buggered tranny whilst in front, and Button blows an engine in sight of the flag! Although Webber wasn’t going to win, he was looking good for a really good points haul, maybe even a podium. Buttons’ engine blow up has pinpointed how silly the two race engine rule is. If you need to change the engine between races AFTER completing the race, you suffer a ten grid position penalty at the next race. If you don’t complete the race, NO penalty. This created the seemingly ludicrous situation whereby Button was instructed NOT to cross the finish line to prevent the penalty being imposed. This meant he gave up championship points to have a better grid position next race! Can you imagine giving away points in F1 under ANY circumstance? Just plain crazy. Funny how when Ferrari were winning all the time people were complaining about how predictable it was. Now Renault win all the time those same people think it’s great! I don’t really care as long as the racing is good, and actually being there is something else. I do think traction control needs to go however. You could hear the engines coming off turn six were breaking down for some thirty metres before they started to run cleanly. They sounded a bit like an old gattling gun! I believe F1 should be the ultimate test of MAN and machine, with no electronic interference. Alonso was in amazing form. I watched him carefully and each lap was like a replay of the previous lap. He was so consistently on brakes, line and power every time he went passed, truly a worthy champion! The Clipsal 500 seems like forever ago! Those bad guys went one up on us there, although there were some dubious decisions going on. Can someone PLEASE explain how the jump start system works!! Rick Kelly was clearly not the first car to move off the line, that was Craig Lowndes. However, apparently there are people beside the grid who report to race control if THEY believe a car jumped early. Surely that is not the case?? And how is it in this modern age that a penalty is imposed without reference to a replay when available? AND the driver penalized has NO recourse, because it is a drive through penalty, so you are left penalized even if proven not to be in the wrong, as was the case here. Rick Kelly managed to finish third, so clearly had plenty of speed, and was arguably robbed of a well deserved victory on the day. It is clearly a very poor system, and very wrong that this should happen. The Grand Prix weekend saw Commodores with plenty of speed in all the races. They were never going to be beaten by the baddies. Both HRT and Perkins cars looked the goods, and fought out the honours over the three days. Some of the guys continue to drive like it is a “fender bender” event though. Seriously, the way some of the guys drive around out there making what appear to be basic errors of judgement. And it seems to be the same guys all the time. It does create excitement however, because every time the pace car comes out you KNOW there’s going to be action aplenty when the race resumes. Maybe they should change the name to the “crash” car, as that is usually what happens as soon as it exits into pit lane! Some of the drivers clearly forget what effect having tyres that have cooled to bellow their best grip levels does to the drivability of the car! Sebastion Loebe continues to show why he is such a champion in WRC. Although the Drof boys are probably faster than his Citroen, they have been less than reliable. If Groenholm stays on the road, and the Focus is reliable, they appear to be sure winners. That hasn’t happened in the last two rounds, and Loebe has cleaned up. He is by far the fastest of everyone behind Groenholm, and he’s very close to that

Page 12: HSCCVApril mag 06 · I should point out that I think Australia is and should be the head of the Commonwealth, and the medal tally only proves it. This is without doubt God's country.

fully factory backed car. The Subaru team seem to be struggling for speed again this year. Even the undeniable talent of Solberg can’t drag them up to the front. Although, interestingly, they are the only Pirelli runners out there, and I’m sure that has a good deal to do with it. Our man Atkinson continues to be thereabouts, but does still appear to be struggling to come to grips with the WRC level of competition. I am sure he will improve as time goes on, I just hope he can do so soon enough to remain in the main game! Sorry, but I have been trying to find some info on local and state rallying, but have found the VRC website slow to be updated. IF anyone out there can help, PLEASE do so, as I’d like to keep you all informed of what’s happening! Drive well, drive safe Glenn

Editors Report Hi everybody, welcome to April! If life had gone according to plan I was going to spend Easter at Bathurst for the GTR & XU-1 Nationals, but didn’t quite make it – between work commitments, having my Torana still in a zillion pieces, Chantelle’s Torana being up for a new clutch, and the results of my last trip to Bathurst still fresh in my memory it all got too hard so I have had a pleasant time enjoying the high octane pursuits offered in Melbourne over the weekend – the Easter Nats at Sandown, which is reported by other attendees and the Muscle Car Masters at Calder – see my report on this poorly supported event. I also had a ball at the F1, nose firmly in the corporate trough (I have no shame when it comes to these things!), and was lucky to get a full tour of the Ferrari pits, including out the back (NO pictures, DON’T knock on the door labelled Schumaker, POCKET NOTHING!!! – bugger, they really know how to spoil a blokes day!) but at least I got a few pics with the lovely ladies out the front. Hope you like our members profile section that starts this month – and remember, it could be any one of you who features in future mags! Thanks for the articles, bits and pieces that have been submitted for the mag – keeps it interesting when it’s all about you! cheers Kim.

A Day At The Races (A Genteel Day spent at Sandown Park – the Right Crowd, and No Crowding, as Brooklands folk used to say) As part of our extended visit to Melbourne to have a presence at the Empire Games, we have also enjoyed this colonies Celebration of Speed, where we have been lucky enough to be entertained by the daring young racers on their 2 wheel steeds at Philip Island, watched the grand circus of gentlemen that is F1 at the ever lovely Albert Park, and now had the culmination of all that is petroleum related at Sandown Park, a place we know better for the passing of money on equine thoroughbreds (one of Philip’s favorite occupations, since he found out about online betting even the family jewels aren’t safe) but which, over Easter, played host to a meeting of Melbournes up and coming social set and their love of horse power of the non-equine kind.

The day had a number of attractions organised which were guaranteed to catch ones attention, if only by assaulting the senses on a number of different levels. As our party arrived, the vehicle cruise was commencing, with an interesting diversion available to the drivers to practice burn outs near the pits – given the rain falling, an interesting experience to see tyres smoking on wet asphalt, something that never happens to me when I allow my chauffer to provoke some tyre slip in the

Daimler in inclement weather I must say. The cruise provided a lot of amusement, as cars tended to proceed sideways, backwards, and occasionally bounced off walls, railings and each other to the vocal approval of the crowd (a little different to Brooklands, where a gentle clap would have been sufficient). A test of power was run on a dynometer during the day, and although it was dissapointing that no cars of the type I would have expected were made available (good English cars that would have continued to demonstrate that English Engineering = Excellence, such as a Vanguard, or an Austin Westminster, or even one of our sporty cars such as an MG, or Triumph Herald. Naturally this event would be beneath a Bentley, or Rolls – although I’m sure those upstarts at TVR would have shown the flag if requested) there were some interesting power readings obtained. A very loud Torana hatchback, which one person described as stuffed full of big block, achieved over 700 horsepower which I thought very laudable; however a Commodore, described as stuffed full of turbo and intercooler, then achieved over 750 horsepower shortly after – apparently with a Japanese motor! Quite impressive, even if it is a copy of a Humber Big 6 or somesuch and I can only assume that they must have consulted some of our engineering chaps such as Hawkers, or Supermarine, to have achieved such figures – I am certainly not convinced such talent would be locally available, let alone Japan!! Later in the day, there was an entertaining event where the drivers had to show their prowess and control by circling a mound of tyres in the middle of the road – and I was very surprised by the number of drivers who, despite carrying the “P” sign of a professional driver in their vehicles, were unable to

complete the test apparently due to an excess of power over skill (it even made Philip question the granting of such status to, in his words, “absolutely bollocking nincompoops, in my day in the Navy if they displayed that level of incompetence they would have been beneath the cabin boys – literally!”). At least it was sufficiently entertaining to attract Philips attention, as he had been spending a large amount of time performing charitable functions for young ladies who were very poorly dressed for the weather, by attempting to get their circulation up and running through vigorous massage and encircling them within his great coat This was followed by my final event before being whisked off to Government House (or, as I like to call it,

one of my Colonial Cottages) for a quiet dinner with that fawning Howard person, honestly he’s worse than our Tony, whom the corgis wouldn’t piddle on if he was on fire, still he’s better than that terrible George fellow, bad enough we had to endure his father but now the idiot son as well – really, they would have been so much smarter to stay on as a colony, the best we can hope for now is global warming floods the low lying areas and only leaves the nice parts, like Disneyland, still standing. My favorite was always Sleeping Beauty, so like Margaret after a few gins, but without the snoring. However, I digress; the final competition that we witnessed was a tyre endurance test, where the drivers evaluated the performance of different brands of tyres when

subjected to the power of their engines. It was quite obvious, by the smoke and exploding tyres that none of the contestants had thought to equip themselves with a good British tyre, such as a Dunlop Aquajet – I remember them because Anne used to use them on her Reliant Scimitar, such a pity the bobbies never accepted her defense that with these tyres her car was safe at any speed – however I was royally chuffed when a good example of English engineering arrived on the track – nothing less than a Vauxhall Viva, a 1968 model I do believe, but it must have had some truly awful tyres on it as the power of the 1200 motor totally overwhelmed them!! (probably another terrible Japanese copy of Burmah Rubber’s diamond tread tyres as used by the Bentley Boys at Le Mans, aahh the dreams I had as a girl of being behind the pitwall with them for a bit of English gentry use of a riding crop and a touch of leather, you just don’t get that today when all the titled folk are common land developers or selling arms to the Middle East, the last honest person I remember was Lord Lucan, lovely chap who I haven’t seen for a while – I hope Charles didn’t put him off last time he was here for dinner with his Spike Milligan impersonation). I believe you colonials had a Brabham version of the Viva with even more power available, so it is probably fortunate none of these had entered as the track may have been damaged irrepairably if it had been unleashed without restriction. So on that wonderful note Philip and I waved farewell to the excited crowd who gathered to see us depart, many waving two finger – one for each of us, I presume. Unfortunately when we did go to leave, the Bentley that the Government had made availabe to us seemed to have suffered some mechanical fault – it was parked where we had left it, but all the wheels had been removed, and two industrious young men were very busy removing the engine while a third lowered the back axle to the ground. Luckily we were able to commandeer another vehicle when the driver offered his services, a nice chap who offered us ice, even though the day was cold, and promised to have us at government house quickly because, not only would he drive like he had stolen it, apparently he had….a jest I’m sure! All our best regards to you all, and thank you for a wonderful time in the colonies! Elizabeth R. and Phil TG.

Motorkhana Madness & Group Five Hello everyone, not much has been happening only two khanas have been run and no speed events mainly due to the Comm games, only a few events were scheduled last year. Mal Cardwell and I competed in round 2 of the VMC at Werribee on March 19 there were 42 entries, which is a big jump from 20 at last years first round. As usual it was very dusty, eight tests were run and Mal managed to finish all cleanly and managed 24th outright and 3rd in class, I on the other hand hit one flag and had one WD for 21st and 5th in class. Four members trekked to Deniliquin for the second round of the VMC on April 9th. Mal, my son Kris, new member Ben Barker and myself competed at the DSCC ground. Set on around 40 acres you just about had to have a cut lunch and a map to travel to the test sites that were set up inside their magnificent autocross track. Ten tests were run and dust was the worst I think I have ever seen, it was that bad, that when I ran in the Paddy test after I had flicked the car around for the run to the finish garage, I had to stay put and wait for the dust to clear. Couldn’t see a thing. I had two wds and stuffed up another test, that I don’t think the result will be good. We all had a ball and will return next year, compete in the autocross on the Saturday and stay overnight for the khana on Sunday. It was worth the seven hour drive. The HAC/VWCV autocross on April 23rd has been cancelled and maybe run later in the year, possibly July 23rd. Round 3 of the VMC is 30th April at Moorabbin, round 4 of G5 khana is 14th May at Werribee, followed by our VMC on the 21st at Werribee, then round 5 of G5 at Werribee on 28th. The supp regs for our VMC round have been approved and should be on our website now. We have been invited to Honda SCCV driver training day at Winton on April 30th, you will get lots of track time and you can have an instructor guide you around if you like. Pete and I are going and Wayne has indicated he might give the Monaro a run. Supp regs are available on Hondas website: www.hsccv.org.au . Don’t forget the next round of the Holden Ford challenge is on May 13th at Phillip Island and is run by the Jaguar car club, supp regs on the website: www.jagvic.org.au . __________________________________________________________________________________________ Mal and Kerry Carwell add to the khana experience:

Victorian Motorkhana Championship Round One and Two

Round One – 19th March 2006 at Werribee

2 HSCCV members ventured out for the first round of the 2006 VMC. Bruce Lethborg tossed the Barina around the course and Malcolm Cardwell battled the Galant around. Bruce finished 21st Outright and 5th in class while Mal finished 24th Outright and 3rd in class. Kerry and Matthew set up in “Chateau Cardwell” for the day (the tent to contain a 7 month old baby) and enjoyed watching the action. There were 43 entries for the day and the competition standard was high.

Round Two – 9th April 2006 at Deniliquin

3 HSCCV members took the long drive up to Deniliquin – Bruce

being the most adventurous, leaving Melbourne on Sunday morning to compete in the interstate round of the VMC. This round is voted by the regular VMC competitors as the “best in the year”. Apparently the club run an autocross on the Saturday on a very fast and smooth flowing track and then have the motorkhana on the Sunday. There was a huge area available and the tests were already set up and they ran two tests at a time with the cars and officials moving between the test areas as required, great time saver. Kris and Bruce Lethborg competed in the Barina and Malcolm Cardwell in the Galant. Once again, Kerry and Matthew Cardwell enjoyed watching the action from afar and playing photographers. A great day was had by all.

Unfortunately, the Galant has developed a bad case of headgasketitis, but it got us home even with water in all the wrong places….

Well, as I mentioned in the Editors column, I went to both the Easternats at Sandown, and the Muscle Car Masters at Calder over the Easter weekend. The first has already had a report written on it, so all I will add is that despite its reputation, it actually is a great way to demonstrate the local ability to stuff a V8 into absolutely anything – the one that appealed to me was mid 70’s Corolla, rego plate “NANNAS” with many more cylinders than Toyota intended and it looked quite ordinary from the outside. If you saw it parked on the street you’d hardly give it a second glance. There was a lot of other well engineered conversions, V8 Geminis were as thick as flies on a daggy sheep, and some quite ordinary looking cars were putting out stupid amounts of horsepower on the dyno – there’s something to be said for not building a cop bait special. For those who did want to show off their engineering prowess, it appears the higher the supercharger the better the effect – a couple almost require red warning lights for low flying aircraft. And even better, a lot of them were not just showboats – they were on the track copping a caning, and sounded just awesome! Overall a well attended event, a lot of smoke and fun, just not everybodies cup of tea.

By comparison, the Muscle Car Masters event at Calder was, unfortunately, very poorly supported. When I went on Sunday there were about 20 cars in the Show ‘n Shine (I should have entered the Dato, it probably would have taken a trophy for Best Hand Painted Classic Japanese Drift Sports Sedan or something of that ilk), there were Muscle car races being run, which had a handfull of Mustangs, a couple of Vettes, a couple of De Tomaso Pantera’s and a Porsche racing in a series of 6 lap events without a lot of enthusiasm, and various trade displays around the place, BUT all was not lost! – Bob Jane had his car collection out, without any barricades (beauty!!), Bowdens had bought down the Bartlet Camaro, Moffats GT-HO and the Geoghan Super Falcon, again sitting on display without barricades, and when they went out on demonstration runs there was a bit of spirit in the driving, and they looked and sounded like I

remembered them many years ago when I used to freeze my bum off at Calder in the seventies…now if Jane could only get his Repco Torana restored back

to its original format it would complete the picture nicely. I figure I saw 5 great cars out on the track, which makes the $40 entry equivalent to watching them for $8 each, plus some minor side attractions….. I hope similar events are better supported, or they just won’t happen again which would be a great shame. Maybe 4 days is just too long for people

interested in entering them; the fact that there were competing events on the same weekend (the EasterNats, plus 2 separate events at Bathurst for Muscle and Historic cars) undoubtably hindered the attendance, especially from interstate entrants. If nothing else it certainly makes me appreciate the Philip Island Historics all the more – even if some of the best cars are behind barriers!!
