Part 2 : The reaping. It's time for the drawing. Effie Trinket says as she always does,« Ladies first ! » and crosses to the glass ball with the girls' names. She reaches in, digs her hand deep into the ball, and pulls out a slipof paper. The crowd draws in a collective breath and then you canhear a pin drop, and I'm feeling nauseous and so desperately hopingthat it's not me, that it's not me, that it's not me.Effie Trinket crosses back to the podium, smoothes the slip of paperand reads ou the name in a clear voice. And it's not me. It's Primrose Everdeen. (…)There must have been some mistake. This can't be happening. Prim was one slip of paper in thousands ! Her chances of being chosen so remote that I'd not even bothered to worry about her. Hadn't I done everything ?. One slip. One slip in thousands. The odds had been entirely in her favour. But it hadn't mattered. (…)« Prim ! » The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. « Prim ! » I don't need to shove through the crowd. The other kids make way immediately allowing me a straight path to the stage. I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me.« I volunteer ! » I gasp. « I volunteer as tribute ! »

Hunger Games : Part 3 . The girl on fire The tributes of District 11 are just rolling out when Cinnaappears with a lighted torch. « Here we go then, » he says, and before we can react he sets our capes on fire. I gasp, waiting for the heat, but there is only a faint ticklingsensation(..) Then he gently tucks a hand under my chin.« Remember, heads high. Smiles. They're going to loveyou ! » For the first time I look at Peeta and realize that ablaze with the fake flames, he is dazzling. And I must be, too.« I think he said for us to hold hands », says Peeta. He grabs my right hand in his left, and we look to Cinna for confirmation. He nods and gives a thumbs-up, and that's the last thing I see before we enter the city. The crowd's initial alarm at our appearance quickly changes to cheers and shouts of « District twelve » ! Every head is turned our way, pulling the focus from the three chariots ahead of us. At first I'm frozen, but then I catch sight of uson a large television screen and am floored by how breathtaking we look. In the deepening twilight the fire illuminates our faces. We seem to be leaving a trail of fire off the flowing capes. (..) As I gain confidenve I actually blow a few kisses to the crowd. The people of the capitol are going nuts, showering us with flowers, shouting our names, our first names, which they have bothered to find on the program.

Part 4 Hunger Games. After about fifteen minutes they call my name. I smooth my hair, set my shoulders back, and walk into the gymnasium. Instantly, I know I'm in trouble. They've been here too long, the Gamekeepers. Sat through twent-three other demonstrations. Had too much wine, most of them. Want more than anything to go home. There's nothing I cando than continue with the plan. I walk to the archery station. Oh , the weapons ! I've been itching to get my hands on them for days ! Bow made of wood and plastic and metal and materials I can't even name. Arrows with feathers cut inflawless uniform lines. I choose a bow, string it, and sling the matching quiver of arrows over my shoulder. There's a shooting range but it's much too limited(..) the string's tighter than the one I use at home. The arrow's more rigid. I miss the dummy by a couple of inches and lose what little attention I had been commanding. For a moment I'm humiliated, the I head back to the bull's eye. I shoot again and again until I get the feel of these new weapons. Back in the center of the gymnasium, I take my initial position and skewer the dummy right through the heart. Then I sever the rope that holds the sandbag for boxing, and the bag splits open as it slams to the ground. Without pausing, I shoulder-roll forward, come up on one knee, and send an arrow into one of the hanging lights high above the gymnasium floor. A shower of sparks bursts from the fixture. It's excellent shooting. I turn to the Gamemakers. A few are noding approval, but the majority of them are fixated on a roast pig that has just arrived at their banquet table.Suddenly I am furious, that with my life on the line, they don't even have the decency to pay attention to me. That I'mbeing upstaged by a dead pig. My heart starts to pound, I can feel my face burning. Without thinking, I pull an arrow from my quiver and send it straight at the Gamemakers' table. I hear shouts of alarm as people stumble back. The arrow skewers the apple in the pig's mouth and pins it to the wall behind it. Everyone stares at me in disbelief. « Thank you for your consideration, » I say. Then I give a slight bow and walk straight toward the exit without being dismissed.

Part 6 : Hunger Games. Sleeping in trees. I pick my tree carefully. A willow, not terribly tall but set in aclump of other willows, offering concealment in those long, flowing tresses. I climb up, tricking to the stronger branches closeto the trunk, and find a sturdy fork for my bed. I arrange thesleeping bag in a relatively comfortable manner. I place mybackpack in the foot of the bag, then slide in after it. As a precaution, I remove my belt, loop it all the way around the branch and my sleeping bag, and refasten it at my waist. Now if I will roll over in my sleep, I won't go crashing to the ground. As night falls, the air is cooling quickly. Despite the risk I took in getting the backpack, I know now it was the right choice. This sleeping bag, radiating back and preserving my body heat, will be invaluable. I'm sure thereare several other tributes whose biggest concern right now is how to stay warm whereas I may actually be able to get a few hours of sleep. If only I wasn't so thirsty…

Part 7 : Rue and the wasp nest. : Katniss is in the tree. She sees Rue in another tree, pointing to something.

My eyes follow the line of her finger up into the foliage above me. Atfirst, I have no idea what she's pointing to but then, about fifteen feet up, Imake out the vague shape in the dimming light. But of… of what ? Somesort of animal ? It looks about the size of a racoon, but it hands from thebottom of a branch, swaying ever so slightly. There's something else.Among the familiar evening sounds of the woods, my ears register a lowhum. Then I know. It's a wasp nest. Fear shoots through me. After all, Idon't know what kind of wasp live there. It could be the ordinary leave-us-alone-and-we'll-leave-you-alone type. But these are the Hunger Games, and ordinary isn't the norm. More likely they will be one of the Capitol's mutations, tracker jackers. These killer wasps were spawned in a lab and strategically placed, like land mines, around the districts during the war. Larger than regular wasps, they have a distinctive solid gold contact. Most people can't tolerate more than a few stings. Some die at once. If you live, the hallucinations brought on by the venom have actually driven people to madness. And there's another thing, these waps will hunt down anyone who disturbs their nests and attempt to kill them. That's what the tracker part of the name comes from. (…) Sitting on my sleeping bagis a small plastic pot attached to a silver parachute. My first gift from a sponsor ! Haymitch must have had it sent in during the anthem. I know by the scent that it is medecine. I dip my two fingers in the jar and gently spread the balm over my calf. The effect is almost magical, erasing the pain on contact, leaving a pleasant cooling sensation behind.(…) I take a deep breath, grip the knife handle and bear down as hard as I can. Back, forth, back, forth ! The tracker jackers begin to buzz and I hear them coming out. Back, forth, back, forth ! A stabbing pain shoots through my knee and I know one has found me and the others ill be honing in. Back, forth, back, forth. And just as the knife cuts through, I shove the end of the branch as far away from me as I can. It crashes down through the lower branches and falls on the ground. The net bursts open like an egg, and a furious swarm of tracker jackers takes to the air. (..) They all scream : « To the lake ! To the lake ! ». They receive multitude of stings. Glimmer appears to go completely mad.I watch her fall, twitch hysterically around on the grouond for a few minutes and then go still.

Part 8 : The pile of supplies. Katniss wants to destroy all the supplies of her opponents.

Most of the supplies, held in crates, burlap sacks, and plastic bins, are piledneatly in a pyramid in what seems a questionable distance from the camp.Others are sprinkled around the perimeter of the pyramid. Foxface runs forthe pyramid with quick small steps. Just before she reaches the circle ofsupplies she stops, searches the ground and carefully places her feet on a spot. Then she begins to approach the pyramid with strange little hops, sometimeslanding on one foot, sometimes risking a few steps. « The ground is mined » I whisper. That explains everything. (..)I know what to do. I move into range and give myself three arrows to get the job done. I place my feet carefully, block out the rest of the world as I take a meticulous aim. The first arrow tears through the side of the bag near the top. The second widens it to a gaping hole. I can see the first apple moving when I let the third arrow go, catching the torn flap of burlap and ripping it from the bag. For a moment, everything seems frozen in time. Then the apples spill to the ground and I'm blown, backward into the air.

Part 9: Looking for Rue. In less than an hour, I’m at the place where we agreed to have the third fire and I know something has gone amiss. Rue set up the fire but never made it back here. I have to remind myself she’s still alive. Rue’s four-note tune is coming out of a mockingjay’s mouth. The one that means she’s all right. Rue has been singing to them, and recently. Otherwise they’s have taken up some other song. My eyes lift up into the trees, searching for a sign of her. I swallow and sing softly back, hoping she’ll know it’s safe to join me. A mockingjay repeats the melody to me. And that’s when I hear the scream. It’s a child’s scream, a young girl’s scream, there’s no one in the arena capable of making that sound except Rue. And now I’m running, knowing this may be a trap. There’s another high-pitched cry, this time my name. “Katniss, Katniss!” “Rue!” I shout back, so she knows I’m near. So they know I’m near. “Rue! I’m coming!” When I break into the clearing, she’s on the ground, hopelessly entangled in a net. She just has time to reach her hand through the mesh and say my name before the spear enters her body. The boy from District 1 dies before he can pull out the spear. My arrow drives deeply into the center of his neck.

Part 10 Mutations Mutations. No question about it. I've never seen these mutts, but they're no natural-born animals. They resemble huge wolves, but what wolf lands and then balanceseasily on its hind legs ? What wolf waves the rest of the pack forward with its frontpaw as though it had a wrist ? These things I can see at a distance. Cato has madea beeline for the Cornucopia, and without question I follow him. If he thinks it's thesafest place, who am I to argue ? Besides, even if I could make it to the trees, itwould be impossible for Peeta to outrun them on that leg-Peeta ! My hands havejust landed on the metal at the pointed tail of the Cornucopia when I remember I'm part of a team. He's about fifteen yards behind me, walking ast fast as he can, but the mutts are closing in on him fast. I send an arrow into the pack andone goes down, but there are plenty to take its place. Peeta's waving me up the horn. « Go, Katniss ! Go ! He's right.I can't protect either of us on the ground. I start climbing. It's difficult to climb the pure gold surface. Peeta has reached the horn and the mutts are right behind him. « Climb ! » I yell. I shoot my arrow down the throat of the first mutt that places its paw on the metal as it dies. Peeta reaches my feet and I grab his arm and pull him along.

Part 11 : Only one winner may be allowed. « Greetings to the final contestants of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games. Only one winnermay be allowed, » he says. « Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour. » Istare at Peeta in disbelief as the truth sinks in. They never intended to let us both live.Peeta moves toward me, as if slow motion, his hand is pulling the knife from his belt-Peeta puts the weapons in my hands: »Do it ». - »I can't », I say. « I won't ». « Do it.Before they send those mutts back or something. « Then you shoot me » I say furiously, giving the weapons back. « Listen, » he says. « We both know they have to have a victor. It can only be one of us. Please, take it. For me. » Myfingers fumble with the pouch on my belt. Peeta sees it and he catches my hand. « No, I won't let you. » « Trust me, » I whisper. I pour a few spoonfuls of berries into his palm. Then I fill my own. « On the count of three ? » Peeta kisses me once, very gently. « The count of three », he says. We stand our backs pressed together, our empty hands locked tight. « Hold them out. I want everyone to see, » he says. We begin counting : »Ine. » Maybe I'm wrong.« Two. » Maybe they don't care if we both die. « Three ! » It's too late to change my mind. I lift my hand to my mouth, taking one last look at the world. The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare. The voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. « Stop ! Stop ! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark ! I give you -the tributes of DistrictTwelve.

Part 12 : The winners Haymitch gives us a push to the victor's chair. Usually, this is a single, ornate chairfrom which the winning tribute watches a film of the highlights of the Games, but sincethere are two of us, the Gamemakers have provided a plush red velvet couch. A smallone, my mother would call it a love seat, I think. I sit so close to Peeta that I'mpractically on his lap, but one look from Haymitch tells me it isn't enough. Kicking off my sandals, I tuck my feet to the side and lean my head against Peeta's shoulder. His arm goes around me automatically. His shirt is made of the same material as my dress. Caesar Flickerman makes a few more jokes, and then it's time for the show. This will last exactly three hours and is required viewing for all Panem.(..) Condensing several weeks into three hours is quite a feat, especially when you consider how many cameras were going at once.
