INVITATION

The Indian Association for Radiation Protection (IARP) is organizing an International Conference (IARPIC-2018) on “Developments towards Improvements of Radiological Surveillance at Nuclear Facilities and Environment” during January 16-20, 2018 at Multipurpose Hall, Training School Hostel, Anushakti Nagar, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The conference will consist of one day dedicated sessions in honour of Dr. A. K. Ganguly on 17-01-2018 to mark the beginning of Birth Centenary Year Celebrations of Dr. A.K. Ganguly. The dedicated session will have invited talks by veteran scientists who worked under Dr. Ganguly, release of a compendium of publications of Dr. Ganguly and a film show of the glimpses of Dr. Ganguly. The conference in general will have invited talks, oral presentations, poster presentations and a panel discussion. The Indian Association for Radiation Protection (IARP), a non-governmental organization (NGO) of radiation protection professionals in India, was registered in 1968 under the Public Trust Act, 1950. The association has a large membership comprising of specialists and users of natural and man-made radiation sources. The Association is an affiliate of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) since May, 1970. The Association has six chapters in different regions of the country (Delhi, Kanpur, Hyderabad, Tarapur, Kaiga and Kalpakkam).

rdThe 33 IARP conference also marks the golden jubilee year of IARP. The aims of IARP include bringing about proper awareness of the benefits of ionizing radiations amongst their users in particular and the public in general. It encourages adoption of appropriate means / procedures for avoiding or reducing radiation exposure in the applications of ionizing radiations and nuclear technology in the country, such as power generation, industry, medicine, agriculture, scientific research etc., thereby maximizing the benefits to the society. It provides a forum for communication and exchange of information amongst specialists in the field of radiation protection and related disciplines in the country and with their counterparts in other countries. It conducts training courses to cater to the requirement of trained manpower in the industrial applications of radioisotopes in industry and research. The IARP publishes an open access web-based quarterly journal “Radiation Protection and Environment” (RPE). IARP has been serving the national and international scientific community for the past 50 years by organizing international, national and regional conferences and workshops in the field of Radiation Protection and Safety. In Nuclear industry, safety is given highest priority at different stages beginning with site selection, design, fabrication and erection and operation and maintenance. Radiological safety aspects are implemented at each phase using the latest techniques and methodologies based on the international/national standards. A great degree of updating in knowledge of radiological safety at nuclear facilities and environmental methodologies and waste management had taken place over a period, among the scientists working in the field. All these efforts have culminated to the idea of developing advanced waste treatment

methodologies aiming at zero effluents discharge concept to the environment. In view of these developments, IARPIC-2018 is devoted to the conference theme of “Developments towards Improvements of Radiological Surveillance at Nuclear Facilities and Environment”. The major scientific thematic areas to be covered are: Exposure control at nuclear facilities, Control of gaseous & liquid effluents discharge, Environmental radioactivity measurements and modeling, Radionuclides migration in geosphere, Personal radiation dosimetry, Internal dosimetry techniques, Health physics instrumentation, Radiological emergency, Medical dosimetry, Radiation safety in accelerators and Regulatory guidelines. This conference is a forum for all the stakeholders to discuss various issues related to the developments in radiological and environmental safety of nuclear facilities. Participation of students/research scholars/academicians from universities will enable them to understand the nuclear operations and safety programmes of the department and accept the nuclear energy for the future development.

As per the policy of IARP, every alternate conference is being organized at Mumbai. Accordingly, the 2018 Golden Jubilee Conference is proposed to be organized as an International Event in Mumbai, where the head quarters of Department Atomic Energy, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Nuclear power Corporation of India Ltd and Heavy Water Board are located. It gives us immense pleasure in inviting you to participate in IARPIC-2018 and look forward to your valuable technical contributions in the conference.

THE VENUE

Mumbai (Maharashtra state) is on the west coast of India. Mumbai city is well connected to other parts of India and rest of the world. People coming to Mumbai by train can alight at Mumbai CST, Dadar, Kurla, Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus. Those travelling by flight will alight either at domestic airport at Santacruz or at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport at Sahar.

The venue of the Symposium is at the Multipurpose Hall, Training School Hostel, Anushakti Nagar, which is located in the north-east part of Mumbai. This is a residential colony for the scientists working in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and is surrounded by beautiful hills with lots of greenery. All railway stations are within 20 km from the venue. Anushakti Nagar is at about 20 kms distance from Mumbai airports by road. Prepaid taxies are available at most of the railway stations and the airports. The weather of Mumbai during January is pleasant and the temperature levels range between 18°C and 25°C.
