IBIS Radiation CourseObjectives: • Learn about the IBIS• Understand IBIS radiation• Know how to prevent

exposure to radiation from theIBIS

• Understand IBIS MaterialLicense requirements– Safety– Shipping– Leak Testing– What to do if exposure to,

What is an IBIS Device?• IBIS is a device that provides in-

flight warning of blade failure onCH/MH-53 A,C,D&E helicopters

• Part numbers:– 12210-1– 12220-1

• NIIN:– 01-125-8904: (CH/MH)– 01-265-3656: (CH-53D)

• Cover part number:– 12239-1

• Cover NIIN:– 01-160-3748– 01-125-0659

• Contains sealed radioactivesource (Strontium-90)

What is an IBIS device?Pressure Indicator Ifpressure is lost in the blade abutton is released . Thisbutton, when triggered, exposes a small radiationsource. The signal is pickedup by the detector assembly.

Detector AssemblyPicks up radiationsignal from thepressure indicator andsends a signal to thesignal processor.

Signal Processor Thesignal processor picksup the message whichilluminates the mastercaution lights oncockpit panel.

What is an IBIS Device?• The radiation source is in

shielded (safe) conditionwhen blade pressure isnormal and IBIS isinstalled

• Emits radiation only whenblade looses pressure, bypressing the manual testbutton, or removing theIBIS from the blade.

• Shown with protectivecover that shields(protects) from radiation

IBIS Devices

• The Navy and Marines can use IBISdevices under Naval Radioactive MaterialsPermit No. 19-00019-T5NP and NAVAIRInstruction 5104.1

• Must follow the permit requirements– Failure to follow requirements could result in:

• Personnel exposure to radiation• Fines or suspension of the permit• Suspension of the permit would ground affected

aircraft

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• IBIS without cover• When indicator is normal

position (bladepressurized) white bandsare visible.

• Strontium 90 source isinside a shield thatabsorbs nearly allradiation

White Bands Visible=Safe

XNote: For illustrative purposes only. All IBIS must haveprotective covers installed except when ready for flight

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• IBIS device showing black(depressurization)

• Exposure hazard exists when theblade has lost pressure, the selftest button is activated, or theIBIS is removed from the blade.

• The Strontium 90 source is out ofits shield and beta radiation isemitted in a 360° “doughnut”pattern around the end of theindicator.

• Reset button on top (should onlybe used in conjunction withprotective cover)

• A shipping cover is provided witheach indicator, which absorbsnearly all the radiation from thesource

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• Use the correct cover. Covermust be properly installed.

• Ensure cover is secured to

pressure indicator with cable andone of the three holes on base ofindicator

• Wear leather gloves and eye

protection (safety glasses, goggles, or face shield) duringIBIS testing and handling IAWappropriate manual

• Stay at least 6 inches from IBIS

indicator whenever possible

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• The protective cover must be onthe indicator at all times exceptwhen helicopter is on flight line in“up status”

• The protective cover must be onthe indicator anytime a blade withIBIS is:

– serviced– removed– installed– tested– checked– transported– shipped

• This cover must be in place at alltimes when IBIS is not on blade

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• Make sure IBIS show whitebefore entering area of rotor headfor any reason

• Before inspection or maintenancework, install protective cover oneach IBIS near work area

• Do not use IBIS indicator as ahandhold. Any bending or sideload put on indicator or oninstalled protective cover willseriously damage indicator, which

seriously damage indicator, whichcan cause IBIS system to fail towarn of a cracked ormalfunctioning blade, should onedevelop.

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• If pressure indicator showsblack with a protective cover:– Wear leather gloves and eye

protection (safety glasses, goggles, or face shield) IAWA1-H53CE-150-200.

– Do not handle the indicatorand prevent exposure within 6inches

– Press firmly on protectivecover to reset IBIS indicatorbut do not strike or useexcessive force

– IBIS indicator may need to bereplaced if it cannot be reset

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• If pressure indicator shows blackwithout a protective cover:

– Restrict access to area of IBIS

indicator– Use “Caution Radioactive

– Use “Caution RadioactiveMaterial” barrier tape withperimeter of 10 feet from source

– Only personnel with radiationtraining specific to the IBIS shouldattempt to put a cover on theindicator and reset

– Wear leather gloves and eyeprotection (safety glasses, goggles, or face shield)

– When approaching indicator thatshows black, keep eyes at least24 inches from indicator and donot exceed one minute nearindicator

XNote: For illustrative purposes only. All IBIS musthave protective covers on except when ready for flight

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• Should pressure indicator fail tooperate properly or be damaged, orshould there be any indication offailure or damage, remove coveredindicator from service immediately IAWappropriate manual.

• Store indicator with protective coverinstalled in a secure area untildisposition has been arranged.

• If IBIS indicator becomes damaged, seal IBIS indicator and protectivecover in plastic bag before it ispackaged for shipping. Include swabfrom wipe test (IAW appropriatemanual) and contaminated gloves ifapplicable, in separate plastic bags.

• Shipping of one or more indicators isto be done in accordance withNAVSUPINST 3400.5. MasterRepairable Items List (MRIL).

Note: Protective cover is required to be installedon IBIS before putting in shipping container

IBIS Safety and Permit Requirements

• If IBIS device is damaged or falls off theaircraft:– Attempt to locate the device– If the IBIS is located, shield the IBIS with a

protective cover and determine if theradioactive source is still on the device

– Use following pictures as references

IBIS Safety

• If there is a mishap, crash, rescue, and recoverypersonnel need to be informed about thepresence of and plan for protection from theradioactive hazard from IBIS

• Contact NAVAIR at 301 757-2133 for moreguidance

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• IBIS indicators must be tested for leakage orcontamination at the time of installation and at sixmonth intervals.

• No need to leak test IBIS in storage• Do need to leak test when removed from storage if

not checked within 6 months• There are special shipping procedures for IBIS

devices

IBIS Safety and PermitRequirements

• Notify NAVAIR 7.10.1 within 24 hours (ornext weekday) at (301) 757-2133 of any ofthe following:– Potential personnel exposure to radiation

from IBIS (showing black without cover)– Theft or loss of IBIS (including loss of aircraft

with IBIS)– Loss of radiation source from an IBIS

IBIS Safety and Permit Requirements

– Posting Requirements-Where IBIS are usedor stored, the following shall be posted:

• NRC Form 3• Copy of the IBIS permit

• Any notice of violation issued by the NavyRadiological Affairs Support Office (RASO) or theNuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

– Documents are available atMission/Occupational Safety and Health pageathttps://home.navair.navy.mil/safety/index.cfm

Summary

• Keep cover on IBIS at all times when not readyfor flight

• Follow shipping procedures• Radiation exposure levels are highest when the

IBIS indicator is not properly covered and theblack indicators are showing

• Remember to keep the IBIS indicator cover onand work at least 6 inches from the source, asmuch as possible

• Follow instructions in manuals• Report potential exposures to, loss or theft of

IBIS
