FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER OUR LADY OF HOPE, 1 PINESWAMP RD. IPSWICH MAY 10, 2020
PARISH WEBSITE: www.ipswichcatholics.org PARISH EMAIL: [email protected] 2
I have been reminded by many that today (May 10) is Mother’s Day. But, before I talk about today,
let’s talk about last Sunday!
Yesterday (May 3) was the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also called Good Shepherd Sunday. One of the traditional
themes of Good Shepherd Sunday is Vocation, the Call of the Good Shepherd. We often limit the notion of Vocation to Priesthood, Diaconate, or Religious Life. But, the Good Shepherd calls all of us in one way or another.
“My Sheep hear My Voice”!
The Good Shepherd also has to listen to the voices of the Sheep! He has to hear the cries of fear, hunger, want, and contentment.
It is basic communication. How well are we, the Sheep, communicating with the Good Shepherd? Are we using the tools He has given to us to communicate, even when we can not come together for daily or Sunday Mass?
Do we listen to him as we read His Word? Do we talk to each other (Prayer)? In other words, Build up your Personal Relationship with the Good Shepherd! Remember!....”Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil;
for your are at my side. With your rod and your staff that give me courage”.
Now for the Mothers that God has given to each one of us. I use Mothers (plural) on purpose. We have so many
Mothers to love, honor, respect, and remember. The Mother who bore us and nourished us. The Church that we call Holy Mother. The Woman Jesus entrusted us to as He hung upon the Cross. The Women who reach out to
us as Teachers, Doctors, Care Givers, Leaders, etc. We are truly gifted with many Mothers in our lives. Do we
show all of them respect and honor? Do we communicate with them as the Good Shepherd communicates with each one of us? Do we take time to visit with them at home, at work, or in the Church? This is what makes
Mother’s Day truly meaningful and important for all of us.
Now for just a few things as we continue our journey through this “dark valley”.
Our Parish church remains open every day from 6 AM to 6 PM for visits and personal prayer. An awareness of
Social Distancing, small numbers, personal hygiene has made it possible for us to be one of the only Churches open is this area. So, drop in sometime!
We had an issue with the Poor Boxes. Hopefully we have been able to rectify the problem. So they are once again
available (more secure and frequently emptied).
We have had a number of Webinars with the Archdiocese trying to plan for the future of the Parishes.
It will not be quick and at times it will not be easy. Because of lack of finances, attendance, and general support, some Parishes will not make it through this crisis. We will try!
Many have helped with support. We are grateful! Whatever you can do is appreciated, if you are able to do so.
But, we have had to realistically look at our current situation and see what else must be done to keep us solvent.
We have, and will, cut back on many Parish expenses. Some Programs and events cannot be as they were before, changes will have to be made if we are to exist as a viable Parish. More on this later.
So, we end as we began….Communicate with the Good Shepherd and Respect, Visit, and Help your Mothers!
In Christ, Fr. Tom Keyes

their donations, thank you. If it were not for your
generosity to Our Lady of Hope and St. Vincent de Paul we would not be able to continue in our
community. Stay Well and be assured that we are doing all that we can to get through this.

Light Breaking Forth-
5th Sunday in OT-Cycle Yr A
Readings: Isaiah 58:7-10 Psalm 112:4-9 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus came among us as light to scatter the darkness of a
fallen world. As his disciples, we too are called to be “the
light of the world,” he tells us in the Gospel this Sunday
(see John 1:4–4, 9; 8:12; 9:5). All three images that Jesus
uses to describe the Church are associated with the identity
and vocation of Israel. God forever aligned his Kingdom with
the Kingdom of David and his sons by a “covenant of salt,”
salt being a sign of permanence and purity (see 2 Chron.
13:5, 8; Lev. 2:13; Ezek. 43:24). Jerusalem was to be a city
set on a hill, high above all others, drawing all nations
towards the glorious light streaming from her Temple
(see Isa. 2:2; 60:1–3). And Israel was given the mission of
being a light to the nations, that God’s salvation would reach
to the ends of the earth (see Isa. 42:6; 49:6). The liturgy
shows us this week that the Church, and every Christian, is
called to fulfill Israel’s mission.
By our faith and good works we are to make the light of
God’s life break forth in the darkness, as we sing in this
week’s Psalm. This week’s readings remind us that our faith
can never be a private affair, something we can hide as if
under a basket. We are to pour ourselves out for the
afflicted, as Isaiah tells us in the First Reading. Our light
must shine as a ray of God’s mercy for all who are poor,
hungry, naked, and enslaved. There must be a transparent
quality to our lives. Our friends and family, our neighbors
and fellow citizens, should see reflected in us the light of
Christ and through us be attracted to the saving truths of
the Gospel.
So let us pray that we, like St. Paul in the Epistle, might
proclaim with our whole lives, “Christ and him crucified.”

STAY CONNECTED TO GOD
During this difficult time of being quarantined, hardship with losses of every kind it is easy to become discouraged, angry or think that God is punishing us. A way to combat these human emotions is to stay connected to God through the Bible and inspiration from the Saints and people of faith. Below is a link to the Magnificat which publishes the daily Mass readings with prayers and reflec-tions. Consider taking advantage of this offering. There is also a children’s version. https://us.magnificat.net/free
