DECEMBER 25—CHRISTMAS CLERGY BENEFIT TRUST

The collection at all the Christmas Masses will once again benefit the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust which cares for the needs of our priests. Our priests are always there for us; they share Christ’s good news, perform good works, and build communities of good faith. All are welcome to learn more and make a gift online at clergytrust.org. And don’t forget to find the Trust on Facebook by searching “@ClergyTrust.” Thank you in advance for your prayers and support.

Thank you to all who have donated to the Grand Annual. We are currently at 97% of our Goal because of your generous support and faithfulness. If you have not yet made your gift to our Grand Annual, please consider joining fellow parishioners in this important campaign.

By Dr. Scott Hahn Saving Family Feast of the Holy Family (Cycle A) Sirach 3:2-6, 12-14 Psalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5 Colossians 3:12-21 Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 Underlying the wisdom offered in today's Liturgy is the mystery of the family in God's divine plan. The Lord has set father in honor over his children and mother in authority over her sons, we hear in today's First Reading. As we sing in today's Psalm, the blessings of the family flow from Zion, the heavenly mother of the royal people of God (see Isaiah 66:7, 10-13; Galatians 4:26). And in the drama of today's Gospel, we see the nucleus of the new people of God - the Holy Family - facing persecution from those who would seek to destroy the child and His Kingdom. Moses, called to save God's first born son, the people of Israel (see Exodus 4:22; Sirach 36:11), was also threatened at birth by a mad and jealous tyrant (see Exodus 1:15-16). And as Moses was saved by his mother and sister (see Exodus 2:1-10; 4:19), in God's plan Jesus too is rescued by His family. As once God took the family of Jacob down to Egypt to make them the great nation Israel (see Genesis 46:2-4), God leads the Holy Family to Egypt to prepare the coming of the new Israel of God - the Church (see Galatians 6:16). At the beginning of the world, God established the family in the "marriage" of Adam and Eve, the two becoming one body (see Genesis 2:22-24). Now in the new creation, Christ is made "one body" with His bride, the Church, as today's Epistle indicates (see Ephesians 5:21-32). By this union we are made God's chosen ones, holy and beloved. And our families are to radiate the perfect love that binds us to Christ in the Church. As we approach the altar on this feast, let us renew our commitment to our God-given duties as spouses, children and parents. Mindful of the promises of today's First Reading, let us offer our quiet perfor-mance of these duties for the atonement of our sins. A service of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology www.SalvationHistory.com

“THE “GIFT”

THAT KEEPS ON GIVING”

God gives all of us many gifts to share with one another. Sometimes, the “Gift” is a person and her talents. Joan Riley is such a person. Joan began playing Church music and directing choirs at the former Sacred Heart Church with Father Lukas and Parishioners. When the Parish was suppressed and joined to Our Lady of Hope Parish, Joan came along with her gifts and musical talent to be an integral part of this Parish. She has served as Music Director under Father Wetterholm, Father Kiley, and Me. We all appreciated her time, treasure, and talents. After more than twenty-five years have passed, Joan has decided to retire from the position of Music Director and Choir Director. Speaking for all my Predecessors and Parishioners, I want to thank Joan for all that she has done to enhance and beautify the Liturgy in our Parishes, past and present. But! There is good news! In” Music” they tell the musician what to do to perform the piece correctly. Two of the directives are “Rest” and “Finale”! Lucky for us, Joan is not playing the “Finale”, she is at a “Rest”! Joan will still be with us for Funerals, and other Masses from time to time. So, Thank you Joan for all you have done, and for all that you will do in your retirement. Becket will miss you!

MARCH FOR LIFE The Archdiocese of Boston is happy to again offer a unique track for individual families to join the “Witness to Life” pilgrimage to Washington D.C. for the 2017 March for Life. Children of all ages are welcome, however keep in mind that the pilgrimage also includes a Middle School track and a High School track geared toward those age groups, but with a different itinerary. Each family should register individually. Please visit www.bostoncatholic.org/witnesstolife for more

information, or send questions to [email protected] or 617-746-5766.

MARY’S HUMILITY

In one of his homily, Pope Francis talked about “fear of the Lord” as a humble way of living. As reported in Zenit:

“The humility of the childlike is that of somebody who walks in the presence of the Lord, does not speak badly about others, looks only at serving and feels that he or she is the smallest …. That is where their strength lies.” The Holy Father praised Mary’s humility, as a girl who receives the gift of God’s son and then goes immediately to serve her cousin, saying nothing about what has happened.

Humility is like this, he said, journeying in the presence of the Lord, happy, joyful… As we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary today, let us consider Mary’s example of humility and joyfully journey through Advent.

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER “For you love all things that are and loathe nothing that you have made;” Celebrate the love of God for us and for each other by strengthening, renewing and rekindling our marriages by participating in a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The next WWME Weekend is Jan 20-22, 2017 in Duxbury, MA. For more information, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at 800-710-9963 or at w.WWMEMA.org.

WINTER STORM CANCELLATIONS

When there is inclement weather, there is concern for the safety of parishioners and visiting priests traveling to our parish and our ability to clear the parking lot and walkways to make them safe and free of snow/ice. When conditions are extreme and the Ipswich School system cancels classes, we will also follow this same decision and cancel celebrating daily Mass. In addition, when there are extreme conditions or roads are unsafe we will also post cancellations of parish events, religious education and weekend Masses on our website. In addition to this you are also able to check cancellations on Channel 7 (NBC), Channel 56(CW) and by logging onto www.whdh.com .

Meet Msgr. McDonough— A Priest and a GeneralAs a native of Boston, Msgr. John P. McDonough never dreamed he would travel the world, bringing the presence of Christ to our military serving abroad. But for thirty years, that’s exactly what he did. As a two-star general, Msgr. McDonough’s call as a military chaplain was to ensure that men and women were able to practice their faith—Catholic or otherwise—as they served their country.

Now at 88 years of age, Msgr. McDonough reects on a priesthood well-lived and well-served. He resides at Regina Cleri, a retirement home for senior priests in Boston, where he ministers to his brother priests, celebrates Mass with them daily, and continues traveling to parishes around the Archdiocese to assist with services.

To help ensure priests like Msgr. McDonough are cared for as they age, please support the Christmas collection this year.

To see Msgr. McDonough’s full video story, visit clergytrust.org.
