Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?”
What amazes me about Matthew’s last judgement scene is that the key to the kingdom seems to be living Eucharist backwards. Eucharist is the complete self-offering of Jesus Christ to us in a meal of bread and wine that is meant to satisfy our hunger and thirst for his life. And what’s expected of us in return is that we feed Jesus in his hunger and his thirst—identified in the needs of the poor. Jesus feeds us. We feed Jesus.
Can the final exam really be that simple? If so, why don’t we all ace this? We know what to do. Meet the needs of the poor. Welcome the stranger. Take care of the sick. Don’t give up on the prisoner. Jesus feeds us so we can feed the world. These basic works of mercy carve the most elegant arc of justice ever drawn.
But the opposite arc remains. If we don’t feed the hungry, if we turn away the stranger, if we neglect the sick and throw away the key on the prisoner, our Eucharist becomes a mere eat-and-run. We show ourselves to be the world’s worst guests, abusing the charity of Jesus. When Jesus says, “Depart from me,” the truth is we already have.

Christ the King Before we run out of Sundays in the Church year we need to celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. As in all major feasts, something is revealed, something is concealed. The kings of this world have authority over things that pass away. Christ’s kingdom does not pass away. Coming at the end of the Church year the Feast of Christ the King ties things together—the mysteries of our faith are tied together, the love of God and love of neighbor is tied together. Lost and Found A woman’s purse was left in the church pews on November 7th. You may not miss the purse so much as you would miss what’s inside. The purse is in the parish office.

Advent Blessings Coming and “All for the Honor and Glory of God”. (St. Ignatius of Loyola) “May the God who gives endurance, encouragement, and harmony give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Rom 15: 5-6). We do understand that changes are sometime difficult to accept, everyone has different preferences, and changes affect our lives and our comfort zone. Our parish community is aware that we are a multicultural parish with more than 2000 families with varying backgrounds, cultures, traditions and life experiences. However, we are working to unify our one community under God’s eyes, and our parish vision and goal for this year is: “The Family that Prays Together Stays Together in God’s Grace and Love”. During Advent season, the Catholic Church calls us to prepare our lives for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and St. Vincent de Paul Community joyfully celebrates Christmas Novena Masses, in this advent season, as we did last year. We will start on Friday, December 15th, at 6:00 pm with a bilingual Holy Rosary (English and Spanish), multi-lingual Simbang Gabi Mass (readings in Tagalog, Spanish, Chuukese and English), ending with the Posada sung in Spanish. All Masses will start at 6 pm, except the two Saturdays which will begin with the regular 5:30 pm Mass, followed by a bilingual Holy Rosary, and the Posada sung in Spanish. On the last Saturday after the Posada, we will come together as a parish family in Reedy Hall for a big community potluck, all are invited and welcome. For many people it is the first time hearing about these celebrations. Therefore, we would take a moment to learn about these traditions and their Backgrounds: What is Las Posadas? Posadas originated in Spain and was later brought to the New World, especially in Mexico. Las Posadas is celebrated for nine days, from December 16th through the 24th. Las Posadas commemorates the difficult journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem as they looked for a place to rest. The word “posada” means refuge or inn. Traditionally, Las Posadas celebration takes place in a home or in various homes. At each house, Mary and Joseph ask for refuge through a song. The pilgrims traveling with Mary and Joseph sing with them. Initially, the innkeepers refuse the Holy Family because they don’t recognize them. Finally, the innkeepers recognize Joseph, the carpenter from Nazareth, and his wife Mary, the future mother of the “Divine Word” and they welcome them inside. Demonstrating hospitality at its finest, the innkeepers hold a party that includes time to socialize, eat, and break a piñata filled with trinkets and sweets.
What is Simbang Gabi Mass? The Simbang Gabi originated in the early days of Spanish rule over the Philippines as a practical compromise for farmers, who began work before sunrise to avoid the noon heat out in the fields. In 1669, priests began to say Mass in the early mornings instead of the evening novenas more common in the rest of the Hispanic world. This cherished Christmas custom eventually became a distinct feature of Philippine culture and became a symbol of sharing. Similar to the Spanish tradition of lighting small oil lamps on Christmas Eve, Filipinos adorn their homes with parol, which is a colorful star-shaped lantern. This is believed to have originally been used by worshippers to light their way to church in the early morning, as well as to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem. Parols continue to be popular decorations in the Philippines, as iconic and emblematic as Christmas trees are in the West.
While the Holy Rosary, Simbang Gabi Mass, and Posada are celebrated in many different ways today, the theme of hospitality and the spirit of preparation remain vital. While some communities opt for one or two nights that symbolize the entire event; St. Vincent de Paul Community joyfully celebrates all nine traditional days during the Christmas Novena Masses. We have a great opportunity to embrace the diversity within our parish family, and we are very pleased to invite you to join us celebrating Christmas Novena Mass here at St. Vincent Church while we prepare our hearts for the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Don’t worry about detail preparations, just come and join us in glorifying God, embracing our diversity and having the liturgical sense of unity and harmony. “The Family that Prays Together Stays Together in God’s Grace and Love.”

"Que el Dios que da fortaleza, aliento y armonía te conceda la misma actitud mental que Cristo Jesús tuvo, de modo que con una sola voz y una sola palabra glorifiques al Dios, Padre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo "(2 Rm 15: 5-6).
Entendemos que los cambios son a veces difíciles de aceptar, que todos tienen diferentes preferencias, y esos cambios afectan nuestras vidas y nuestra zona confortable. Nuestra comunidad parroquial es consciente de que somos una parroquia multicultural con más de 2000 familias con diferentes antecedentes, culturas, tradiciones y experiencias de vida. Sin embargo, estamos trabajando para unificar nuestra única comunidad ante los ojos de Dios, y nuestra visión y meta parroquial para este año es: "La familia que ora unida permanece unida en la gracia y el amor de Dios".

Los faroles siguen siendo decoraciones de Navidad muy populares en las Filipinas, tan icónicas y emblemáticas como los árboles de Navidad en el oeste.
Mientras el Santo Rosario, Simbang Gabi Misa y las Posada se celebran de muchas maneras diferentes hoy en día, el tema de la hospitalidad y el espíritu de preparación siguen siendo vitales. Mientras que algunas comunidades optan por una o dos noches que simbolizan todo el evento; La Comunidad de San Vicente de Paúl celebrara con gran alegría los nueve días tradicionales durante las Misas de Novenas de Navidad. ADVENT IS COMING!
The season of Advent is only a week away! What traditions does our family hold during this time of year? How can we use our traditions to prepare our hearts & homes for the birth of Our Lord?
Here’s one tradition: The Advent Calendar! The tradition of the Advent Calendar date back to early 1800’s in Germany. Christians began counting down the days until Christmas by lighting a candle each day in December until the 25th or marking a doorway with chalk lines to count down until the big day! Many Advent Calendars today simply have 25 little doors that hide chocolates. For kids, this sometimes means the Advent Calendar is simply a countdown to more candy instead of a way of anticipating the birth of Emmanuel!
So how can we start giving this tradition back to the Lord? Add something to your home altar for Advent! Here are some ideas!
Make your own countdown to Christmas! There are many ways to get our families, big & small, old & young, celebrating Advent (meaning “coming”), that is, to prepare for the coming birth of our Savior! One way is to create your own calendar of things you and your family can do each day to prepare for Christmas!
Here are just a few other ideas for actions you can do each day:
Pick out your Christmas tree Pick out a gift for the Giving Tree Make simple gift bags to hand out to the homeless Call a relative and sing Christmas carols over the phone Bake Christmas cookies to hand out to neighbors Pray for special intentions Learn more about the origins of Christmas traditions Read the Christmas story straight from your Bible
Your “calendar” can come in many forms too! Make a paper chain where each link is for each day and a different activity or prayer intention. Have a jar of popsicle sticks with activities and pull out a stick each day (this would be a great thing to keep on your home altar!) Make an actual calendar with pockets to pull out an idea-tag each day, or make a Jesse Tree to remember the whole Christmas story!

¡La temporada de Adviento está solo una semana de empezar! ¿Qué tradiciones tiene su familia durante esta tiempo del año? ¿Cómo podemos usar nuestras tradiciones para preparar nuestros corazones y hogares para el nacimiento de Nuestro Señor?
Aquí hay una tradición: ¡el Calendario de Adviento!
La tradición del Calendario de Adviento se remonta a Alemania a principios del siglo XIX. The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) 2017 Christmas Day 2017 follows the 4th Sunday of Advent, December 24. There have been some questions with regard to the obligations of these Holy days.
The Archdiocese has determined that each obligation must be met by attendance at one of the Masses of the Sunday and one of the Holy days. That is, a Christmas Mass on the evening of Sunday, December 24th (Vigil or night) will not satisfy the obligations for the 4th Sunday of Advent.
There are two distinct obligations: That the 4th Sunday of Advent which can be met by attendance at Mass on Saturday, December 23 or the morning Masses of Sunday, December 24; and that of Christmas which can be met by attendance at Masses on Christmas Eve (Vigil or night) and those on Christmas Day.

La Natividad del Señor (Navidad) 2017 El día de Navidad 2017 sigue al 4º domingo de Adviento, el 24 de diciembre. Ha habido algunas preguntas con respecto a las obligaciones de estos días Santos.
