Lawrence, Li I., June 26—The fourth an nual parade and tournament of the Town of Hempstead Volunteer Firemen’s Association took place to-day, and twenty thousand or more came from far and near to see the spectacle and witness the contests of the fire laddies. The village Is gayly decorated and everybody is in holiday attire. Early in the morning carriages and farm wagons arrived from outside villages, each bringing its quota of sightseers. Hundreds more came by way of the trains. Everywhere the gallant Are laddies were prominent, and the clanging of hells was heard In every direction as the vari ous fire companies arrived and fell Into line. Along the curbs carriages and wagons were drawn up and the sidewalks were lined with enthusiastic crowds, which cheered each com pany as It passed by. An arch, the widest yet built, profusely decorated with the national colors and bunt- Kowland H. Mayland, Grand Marshal of th.3 Parade and President of the Hempstead Firemen's Association. Ing, and surmounted by two heroic figures of Liberty, spanned Cental avenue in front of the quarters of Washington Hook and Ladder Company. The grand and reviewing stands reached along each side--ot the arch and were black with people. The headquarters In Kelly’s Hotel were connected by telephone with the arch. The committee in charge of the arrange ments saw that the hundreds of firemen were well fed and after luncheon the firemen pre pared their apparatus for the contests, which commenced at 1:30 o’clock. The hook and ladder contest was the most hotly contested event on tho programme and the steamer contest this afternoon will also be a very in teresting one. Union of Hempstead, Wide Awake of Freeport, Arverne and Lawrence engines will fight it out. The contests on the programme for this afternoon are a hook and ladder, hose, steamer, chemical and hand engine, ladder climbing and juvenile hook and ladder. The contests will be governed by the fol lowing regulations: Hook and ladder—Trucks to run 200 yards, raise twenty-five foot la ' ler to arch spanning course, and fireman to ascend to top; time to be called when man gra.sps top rung of ladder and ladder against arch; rung to be held until time is called. Limited to twenty-ono men. Ladder climbing—Plremnn to run fifty feet, scale thirty foot ladder placed against arch, time to be called when man gm.sps top rung; rung to be held until time Is called. Hose contest—Hose carts, carriages or \vagons to run 200 yards to hydrant, attach to hydrant, lay 100 feet of ho.se, break coupling, screw on pipe; time to be called when water strikes back stop. 125 feet from hydrant. Each company to carry not less than 200 feet of regulation hoso. Pipe to be carried from starting point. Limited to fifteen men. Steamers—Steamers to play through l.'O feet of hose in one stream. Each steamer will be al lowed eighteen minutes In all to make test; time to be taken from first appearance of .«moke from the smoke stack: cold water in the boiler. Hose to be attached to ordinary working outlet. First class steamer to use 7'^ Inch nozzle, soconri class steamer to use 1% inch nozzle, third class steamer to use 1V4 Inch nozzle, fourth class steamer to use IV& inch nozzle and fifth class steamer to use 1 Inch - ................................... ntaf disti nozzle and fifth class steamer t inch nozzle. ^The award of prize shall bo horizontal distance water l.s thrown, measured nozzle of pipe placed on ground previous to water entering hose. Bay Shore, L. I., Juno 26—The cycle path between Babylon and Bay Shore, which is to pass in front of the residence of Mrs. Ryan, on West Main street, is being rapidly con structed. Mrs. Ryau has taken an appeal *o the appellate division of the Supreme court against the decision permitting the construc tion of the path in front of her residence. AN ANTI-BAKES. MOVEMENT. Yaphank, L. I., June 20—A movement to remove Keeper Jonathan Baker of the Suf folk County Almshouse is said to be on foot but as most of the talk of removal comes from Democrats. I., June 26—Coroners Cronin, Ruff and Guy and Chief Clerk Charles Scheller appeartd before the grand Jury this morning to testify as to the negligence of the city authorities in not building a high way parallel to the dangerous section of the Long Island Railroad at Laurel Hill, where three men were killed on the track a few days ago and a dozen were 'icllled last year. Tho railroad track is the only thoroughfare be tween the large factories and tho residence district.
