Chairman’s Message

Director’s MessageI am very pleased to invite companies to visit our Institute for considering our graduating BTech(IT) and MTech(CS) students for recruitment. In a short span, IIIT-Delhi has established itself as one of the leading institutes in research and education in IT, with one of the finest faculty, all of whom are PhDs from across the world. This graduating BTech(IT) batch has obtained excellent technical training which includes, besides core areas like data structures, operating systems, networking, databases, software engineering, etc. courses on advanced topics like data mining, mobile computing, information security, image processing, etc. and various domains like Finance, Biotechnology, etc. Many of these courses have group projects, which helped the students develop team working abilities. In addition, they have gone through a stream of courses on communication including basic communication skills, technical communication and critical reading. Overall, IIIT-Delhi graduates have solid technical skills, decent understanding of some domains, good communication skills, and good exposure to problem solving and team work. The current batch of graduating MTech students have specialized in Information security, having done a range of courses in it.

Dr. Kiran KarnikChairmanBoard of Governors

Though very young, IIIT-Delhi is now firmly on its way to realizing its mission of becoming a globally respected Institute for research and higher education. With its focus on recruiting highly qualified faculty from across the world, it has already emerged as one of the leading Institutes in IT, capable of developing well trained and innovative young professionals. Its graduates combine a solid technical grounding with other supporting knowledge, including soft skills. This type of talent is unique and in short supply; it will be of special interest to companies working in cutting edge technologies. In this era of knowledge, companies know the value of talent and of innovation. I invite all such corporations, working in the forefront of Information Technology, to visit IIIT-Delhi for recruitment.

The mission of IIIT Delhi is to be a global centre of excellence in Information Technology education, training and research. Its twin objectives are:• To carry out advanced research and development in information and software technologies, and in

leveraging IT in specific domain areas.• To train and educate, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, engineers of outstanding

ability who can become researchers, innovators, and new product creators.IIIT Delhi was created as a State University by an act of Delhi Government empowering it to do research and development and grant degrees. The Institute is academically and administratively autonomous.Starting from a three room institution with just one faculty member, IIIT Delhi has grown to over 300 undergraduate, 60 MTech, and 25 PhD students, and 19 faculty members in just 3 years. We are now moving steadily towards our medium term goal to become an Institute of about 2000 students, 100 faculty members, 25 research groups, and new teaching programs and research initiatives.

About IIIT Delhi

Being a research-led institution, IIIT-Delhi places a heavy emphasis on building strong research groups. The main research groups, some of which are already amongst the largest in India, are in the areas of:• Software Engineering• Information Management and Data Analytics• Theoretical Computer Science• Image Analysis and Biometrics • Emerging Architecture and Systems Design • Information Security• Mobile and Ubiquitous ComputingStrong PhD and Masters Programs form the backbone to the centres providing the required researchers. The institute has been successful in embedding research based project work even in the undergraduate program. Papers, technologies, patents are important outputs from these centres. Based on the soundness of approach, the institute has received research projects from institutions like DIT, DST, Nokia, SAP, Microsoft, IKSL, TCS etc. In the last two years, IIIT Delhi faculty has published 24 papers in national and international journals. They participated in 3 conferences. Faculty also received 5 prestigious awards for their contributions. IIIT Delhi faculty has established a close connect with the Industry. As a result, we currently have externally funded R&D projects worth approx. Rs. 55 million.

Faculty and ResearchIIIT Delhi has 19 full-time faculty members – all of them have a Ph.D. Most of them have done their PhD from USA and Europe. In addition, adjunct faculty from industry and other institutions supplant our regular faculty in academics and research. We also have a panel of educators for humanities and social science courses that are part of the curriculum.

Innovative BTech ProgramThe curriculum for the B.Tech.(IT) program in IIIT-Delhi is innovative and "inverts the pyramid". Usual engineering programs start with general courses in sciences and engineering, and then migrate to specialized courses for the disciplines. While these courses are indeed foundational for many engineering disciplines, they are not foundational for IT - rather they can be treated as application domains. Based on this observation, the BTech (IT) program at IIIT-Delhi starts with computing oriented courses first, and allows the possibility of doing science courses later. Besides being better suited for an

Page 4: IIIT-Delhi · program, to obtain specialization in Information Security a student must complete at least 16 units of courses in the overall area of Information Security. Courses include

IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects. With this approach, the BTech (IT) program can be divided broadly in two halves. The first half will focus on building the foundations, and will be highly structured. The second part is for further developing the skills and knowledge of the students in various topics - computing and non-computing. This part also provides limited specializations, and different students may follow different paths and take different set of courses in it.

The second half of the program consists mostly of elective courses. An elective course is one which is not compulsory, and a student will have choices from which to select the courses he/she wants to do. Some of the electives may be organized as streams, where a stream is a sequence of courses in an area providing a limited specialization in that area. Besides electives and streams for specialized areas in IT, as one of the objectives of IIIT-Delhi is to have teaching and R&D in some domain areas (like health, life sciences, finance, economics, E-Governance, sciences, etc.), streams and electives from domains will also be offered. List of courses in these streams, electives, and further information about the courses is available on the website. The UG Manual of IIIT-Delhi also has provision for an Honors program. An Honors option is designed to challenge the brighter and more ambitious students, without burdening an average student.
