This is one of the reasons why we take the time to highlight them each year through a central theme during services. There are special blessings for Rosh Hodesh and Hallel that we recite, and at Ilan Ramon we also have our own special tradition of celebrating and honoring those students born during that Hebrew month. This fall, the theme we started the year with during our staorientation was: “Establishing Meaningful and Lasting Relationships / Connections. ” In alignment with this theme, we chose to declare our Rosh Chodesh theme as: “Finding our personal connection with Biblical characters. ” We have chosen 12 Biblical characters, one per month, who are mentioned outside of the Five Books of Moses. We spend so much time during our Torah studies learning in detail about our ancestors in the Five Books of Moses, that we thought it would be beneficial and special to expand our knowledge to famous biblical leaders from other sections within the Bible. Each new Jewish month, we will present a Biblical character with a focus on a distinct characteristic. Our goal by the end of the year is to have a bulletin board in our synagogue with 12 characters and 12 powerful human traits that we can reflect on and learn from. Ask your child to share which leader was presented last Friday for Rosh Chodesh Elul (Elijah the prophet) and what characteristic was highlighted (Commitment). As always, you are always welcome to join us for services, and we’ll invite you (in grades 1 5) on the date your child is being celebrated. Gathering as a community in prayer and study is a value we cherish. Shavua Tov , Yuri & Bat -hen

COMMUNITY NEWS

Parshat CornerParshat Hashavua Ki Teitzeh(Deuteronomy 21: 10 - 25:19)

Parshat Ki Teitzeh (when you go out) includes a lot of different commandments. As you remember, there are 613 commandments in the Torah; 74 of them are in this parsha, parshat Ki Teitzeh! Some of the commandments are related to behavior during war, keeping the dignity of the dead, paying workers on time, laws of marriage and divorce and more.

Three very important commandments in this parashah include that can have a direct impact on our daily lives include:

1. "If you see your brother's animals go astray and you find them, you must return the animals to the owner. If the owner is not near or you do not know the owner, then you may keep the animal until someone inquires for it and then you shall return it. You must apply this same rule to any lost items you find.”

2. "Do not withhold anything from a day laborer who is poor or a stranger. Pay them their rightful wages before sundown. Let him not cry out to God against you, for that sin would cling to you.”

3. "Keep your promises.”

So many of the laws in this parsha all relate to the way in which we treat others with fairness and equality. The question that always seems to be raised, is what does it mean to be fair?

This Torah portion concludes with the obligation to remember “what Amalek did to you on the road, on your way out of Egypt”

SAVE THE DATE!“THE DINNER"

What is “The Dinner”?"The Dinner" is a unique and exceptionally fun adult only evening! Our community comes together at a private home for Havdallah, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, dinner and dancing! This evening is an opportunity to have a great time and raise money for our amazing school!

Why should I attend? For a few reasons! First, it is a great way to get to know your school community, meet new friends, and spend time together. Second, evenings like this help our community to grow closer. Third, all of the food and beverage for the evening is provided by the hosts, which means that every dollar made by "The Dinner” goes straight to our children!

When?Saturday night, November 2, 2019 at 7:00 pm

CARPOOL LANE SAFETY IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY!

Dear Parents,

As we begin a new year I wanted to share a few quick reminders about safety during carpool as we begin the new year.

• NEVER drive up the wrong side of the road leading to campus. We understand the lines can be long, but once carpool begins the line moves fairly quickly. We ask everyone to be PATIENT as the new year begins and everyone gets the hang of being back.

• There is never a reason to honk at another family to get them moving. • For all Elementary School families we ask you to please stay in the line and allow us

to place your child in the car. It is for everyone’s safety to limit the number of people walking in the parking lot.

• The only families who need to park their cars are the ECE families with children in E2 and E3 who must come in and sign their child out. For our E4 families please note we have your children in the carpool area and will be happy to get them into the car for you.

• If your child is going home with someone else, it is imperative you let the office know in writing and in advance.

• DO NOT park your car along the side of the road leading to the back parking lot. This is a fire lane and cars are coming and going.

• Please DO NOT schedule play dates or re-arrange carpools while in the carpool pickup lane.

• DO NOT text or use your cell phone in the pick-up lane or when driving on our campus. If you need to come into the school, please park in a designated spot. Please don to park in the designated handicap parking spots unless you have the appropriate placard.

• Never leave your car unattended in the carpool lane

Thank you for your help. The safety of all our students and staff is our primary concern. Thank you,Yuri

Hello Ilan Ramon Family and Friends,

Perhaps you have heard about our SCRIP program and have wondered what it is all about. Many of you have ordered regularly, and we thank you for your support of our program! We would LOVE to see more families take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to raise money for our school.

IRDS is involved in a Scrip program in which we sell gift

cards from a wide range of retailers, restaurants, entertainment companies and so much more, and we earn a percentage on every card we sell! The best part is, participating in this program costs you nothing more than what you would be spending at these retailers!

Do you shop at Sprouts Market? Why not buy a Sprouts Scrip card?

IRDS will earn 5%!

Need school clothes? Why not buy a Children’s Place Card? IRDS will earn 12%!!

Need a caffeine kick? Get your Starbucks card! IRDS will earn 7%!!!

And you pay only the value of the card! It couldn’t be easier!

Attached is an order form with a complete list of the cards we sell. I will be placing a Scrip order the 1st week of school. Please fill out the forms, (on the IRDS website www.ilanramondayschool.com) and drop them off or mail them with payment to the IRDS office. Once I place the order, turn around is very fast!

You may pay by cash, check or credit card (Please note that credit card payments must add a 3% additional surcharge.)

Many scrip cards are available year round for a quick gift or night out. Please check in the office to see what is available and to make your purchase.

All the Best to you and yours!

Starting January 1, 2017, children under 2 years old must be rear facing unless they weigh 40 pounds or more, or are 40 inches tall or more.

Children under age 8 must be buckled into a car seat or booster in the back seat.

Children age 8 or older, or who are 4’9” or taller, may use the vehicle seat belt if it fits properly with the lap belt low on the hips, touching the upper thighs, and the shoulder belt crossing the center of the chest. If children are not tall enough for proper belt fit, they must ride in a booster or car seat.

Everyone in the car must be properly buckled up.

For each child under 16 who is not properly secured, parents (if in the car) or drivers can be fined more than $500 and get a point on their driving records.

Most children will

outgrow an infant seat

before age 1

■ The next step is a convertible car seat. ■ Rear facing is 5 times safer than forward facing.■ The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends

that children ride rear facing to the highest weight or height allowed by the car seat manufacturer.
