A Word from Our Chairman Galen L. Johnson, 2013-‘14 State Chairman
Last year went out with a bang for Illinois Ducks Unlimited. It was one of the best years, if not the best ever. Event income was up approximately 48% over 2011 ($2,835,835), membership was up slightly (28,186), major donor numbers were way up (76) – more on that in a second – but volunteer numbers were down (2,553). I would just like to thank each and every one of you for your work this past year! As you may remember from past newsletters, Illinois DU had set a goal of 75 major donor increases and new donors for 2012. I am happy to report we reached that goal, plus one to spare, for a total of 76. That equals approximately $6.5 million, much of which will be going through your events in the next four years. Illinois was the second-best state last year for recruiting major donors. Only Louisiana reported higher, with 96. It was a great year for Illinois, with the Chicago Gala raising well more than $1 million, event income up substantially and major donors numbers increasing to a record level. Now, let’s have a great year in 2013, raise more dollars for the ducks and have some fun doing it! Thanks for all you do for the ducks, and please remember our friends and family in the military. Ducks Unlimited is excited to announce that your chapter now has the chance to earn a handgun
with the official DU logo to use in your fundraising efforts, with zero cost to your committee! The
new Call ‘Em In program officially kicked off on January 1, 2012.
The members you recruit to DU are critical to our mission. In addition to their commitment to
wetlands and waterfowl conservation, they increase DU’s ability to attract advertisers and afford
us critical influence with state and federal legislators.
DU’s board of directors recognized that we should be rewarding our chapters that are best at
bringing members in and keeping them coming to events. The new Call ‘Em In program does just
that by giving events the ability to qualify for a no-cost handgun featuring the official DU logo.
In order for an event to qualify, it must:
Generate $5,000 net/net for a dinner event or $2,500 net/net for a non-dinner event
Generate a minimum of 70 members
Have no net loss of members from the prior year’s event
AND have 60% member retention from the prior year’s event members
Events that qualify in 2013 will be awarded the no-cost handgun for their 2014 event!
If you need help with your membership retention and recruitment, you can download a copy of
DU’s Membership Recruitment Manual by clicking here: Recruitment Manual. This guide was
developed by your fellow volunteers across the country, and is full of ideas to help you fill the
halls at your event. More resources are also available at volunteergear.ducks.org or through your
Regional Director.
Thank you for all you do and good luck in this new, exciting program!

The Back Page
Hi folks! I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season. I was able to get all my Christmas shopping done after the northern duck season closed, and the feedback I received was positive. You can never go wrong with a gift certificate
from the local Dollar Store! So, all is well in the Sarafin household.
On another positive note, I received many responses to last month’s “Back Page” column taking me up on my offer to share my knowledge with younger folks. I’m happy to report that two of my younger grandkids (8 and 10 years old) have jumped at the chance to go afield with me and learn the ways of the waterfowler. In preparation, I’ve assigned them Part I of Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac. I also plan to review and discuss the Gordon MacQuarrie trilogy and make weekly visits to the trap range, for good measure. I’ll keep you posted on our progress.
If you’ve never attended our state convention, you’re really missing out on a great time. Our volunteers work very hard to put together an outstanding event each year. Look for information in the mail or visit the link on the third page of this newsletter for details. I hope to see you all there!
And, finally, congratulations to everyone for an absolutely awesome year in
2012! Way to go!
Till next time…
