locations of the film In Bruges MARKT / BELFORT / BREIDELSTRAAT 1 The Market Square is the beating heart of the city where the main arterial roads join together. It is dominated by the Belfry tower with its altitude of 83 m. Climbing the 366 steps of the winding staircase is a challenge: when you reach the top, you are rewarded with an amazing view. On the second storey is the former medieval treasure-room, today a museum. The Belfry’s carillon (47 bells with a total weight of 27 tons) is one of the finest in the world. Director Martin McDonagh preps a chase scene with Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and Harry (Ralph Fiennes) in the beautiful Market Square private locations: 01 terrace of restaurant De Beurze, 02 La Sirène d’Or and 03 Bistro ‘t Zwart Huys BURG SQUARE AND BASILICA OF THE HOLY BLOOD 2 The Burg square is the cradle of Bruges. Here, Flanders’ first Count Baldwin I built a fortress in the 9th century. On the right hand side of the Gothic City Hall (14th century) is the Basilica of the Holy Blood. It is a double chapel, with the roman Saint Basil’s Chapel (12th century) on the ground floor and the Gothic basilica upstairs (19th century). The relic of the Holy Blood is kept in the upper chapel and is venerated weekly on Friday. Every year on Ascension Day, the relic is worshipped in Bruges streets during the Procession of the Holy Blood. Ray (Colin Farrell) lapses into a daydream while sitting on a bench in Bruges’ lively Burg Square, while Ken surveys the religious artifacts at the Basilica of the Holy Blood private location: 04 restaurant Diligence INNER COURT GRUUTHUSE 3 This former palace of the Lords of Gruuthuse (15th century) was converted into a museum in 1955. The furniture, kitchen equipment, silverware, tapestries, lace, ceramics, glassware, weaponry, musical and measuring instruments, etc. provide a good picture of everyday life led by the former inhabitants and bourgeoisie in the past. Other eye-catchers are the beautiful tapestries, the 500-year old kitchen and the unique praying chapel. In the inner court you have a splendid view on the Church of Our Lady. private location: 05 restaurant Cafedraal GROENINGE MUSEUM 4 This museum is a must for every art lover visiting Bruges. It offers a fine survey of Dutch and Belgian paintings (15th- 20th century). The masterpieces by the so-called ‘Flemish Primitives’ (i.e. Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling) are without a doubt the highlights of this museum. Quite remarkable as well is the uni- que collection of works by Flemish expressionists. Here you can also admire Hiëronymus Bosch’s “Last Judgement”. Ken and Ray search for deeper meaning amongst the medieval artwork at the Groeninge Museum FISH MARKET 5 In this unique construction, dating from the period of Dutch rule (1815-1830), fresh fish is sold from Tuesday to Saturday. The North Sea is only 10 miles from Bruges. ARENTSHOF / KNIGHTS OF THE APOCALYPSE / BONIFACIUS BRIDGE 6 At Hof Arents, you can see the statue group ‘Knights of the Apocalypse’ (Rik Poot, 1987), an allegoric representation of the earthly horrors (death, war, hunger and revolution). The nearby Bonifacius bridge provides an ideal setting for romantic photographs. GROENE REI / STEENHOUWERSDIJK / PEERDENSTRAAT 7 In this picturesque corner of Bruges you will find almshouse De Pelikaan, founded at the beginning of 1700 for the elderly and widows. Opposite, on the other side of the canal, you see the romantic pavilion (19th century) in the garden of the Van Zuylen house. private locations: 06 B&B Number 11 and 07 Hotel Die Swaene ROZENHOEDKAAI / HUIDENVETTERSPLEIN / ’T PANDREITJE 8 Without a doubt, the most photographed spot in Bruges . ‘Rozenhoedkaai’ refers to the numerous stalls of rosaries that were set up here. At the nearby Huidenvettersplein, you see the 17th-century Tanners’ House. While Ray prefers the Bruges nightlife, Ken felt a ride on the historic canal Rozenhoedkaai, was a must-see private location: 08 Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce WALPLEIN 9 On this square you will find the Brewery “De Halve Maan”, the only remaining home brewery of the city, founded in 1546. The beer ‘Brugse Zot’ is brewn here, a full-flavoured top-fermented beer. The bronze horse carriage on the square (Jef Claerhout 1982), pulled by the winged horse Pegasus, driven by the Greek God Prometheus carrying Leda and Zeus in the back is an ode to the many coachmen taking tourists around the city every day. private location: 09 De 7de Hemel VERVERSDIJK / SPINOLAREI 10 Numerous cloth dyers, who coloured the Flemish cloth, used to live along this canal and in the area. The dyes were imported from different parts of Europe. JERUSALEM CHURCH 11 The church was built in the 15th century according to the plans of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Not to be missed are the precious stained glass windows and the mausoleums of the church founders Anselm Adornes and his spouse. Determined to take in all the sights, Ken climbs the stairs to view the relic on display at the Jerusalem Church JAN VAN EYCKPLEIN 12 During the flourishing Middle Ages, this square served as an inland port where toll was levied on the goods brought in by ship from Bruges outer ports. Here you can also admire the statue of Jan Van Eyck, the famous 15th-century Flemish painter. Ken and Ray talk shop while relaxing in Jan Van Eyckplein BOTANICAL GARDEN ‘ASTRIDPARK’ 13 This Municipal Park was laid out in 1850 on the former land of the Monastery of the Friar Minor (Fran- ciscans). In 1935 the park was named after queen Astrid who died tragically, but the park is referred to by the locals as the ‘Botanieken Hof’ (Botanical Garden). Ray and Ken face off near the children’s playground at the botanical garden ‘Astridpark’ MINNEWATER 14 This very romantic site used to be the inland port and landing stage for barges, which provided a re- gular transport service between Bruges and Ghent. The little building houses a sluice-system from 1519 that regulates the water level in the town. BEGUINAGE 15 The Beguinage was founded in 1245. Nowadays, it is no longer inhabited by beguines, but by Benedic- tine nuns. The typical Beguine’s House illustrates how the inhabitants used to live. verantwoordelijk uitgever: Dieter Dewulf, postbus 744, B-8000 Brugge | redactie: City Film Office Brugge | fotografie © Jaap Buitendijk, 2007 Focus Features LLC | plan ©Johan Mahieu | vormgeving: Bruno Gouwy Market square Burg square Inner Court Gruuthuse Groeninge museum Groene Rei Rozenhoedkaai Relais Bourgondisch Cruyce Jerusalem Church Jan Van Eyckplein Botanical garden ‘Astridpark’
