    IntroductionThe Analyst Banking Special presentsits seventh consecutive study of the an-nual performances of Indian Banks.These banks have been categorized intoPublic, Private and Foreign sectors. The

    Analyst has adopted the world-re-nowned CAMEL methodology. Themodel examines the efficiency of bankson these important parameters likeCapital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Man-

    agement, Earnings Quality and Liquid-ity.

    SamplingThe initial sample comprised 204banks. However, the sample size wasreduced to 64 banks after excluding co-operative banks, non-scheduled com-mercial banks followed by banks whoseannual reports for the year 2009-10were not available.

    DataThe data for the study has been securedfrom PROWESS, a corporate databasedeveloped by the Center for MonitoringIndian Economy (CMIE).

    Ranking Methodology All the banks were first individuallyranked based on the sub-parameters of each parameter. The sum of these rankswas then taken to arrive at the Group

    Average of individual banks for eachparameter. Finally, the compositerankings for banks were arrived at aftercomputing the average of these groupaverages. Banks were ranked in the as-cending/descending order based on theindividual sub-parameters.

    The present study of Banks are based on CAMEL Methodology, which are categorized into Public,Private and Foreign Banks.

    METHODOLOGY

    As per the latest RBI norms, banks inIndia should have a CAR of 9%. It is ar-rived at by dividing the Tier I and Tier IIcapital by risk-weighted assets. Tier Icapital includes equity capital and freereserves. Tier II capital comprises sub-ordinated debt of 5-7 year tenure. Thehigher the CAR, the stronger the bank.Debt-Equity Ratio (D/E)Debt-Equity Ratio is arrived at by di-viding the total borrowings and depos-

    its by shareholders net worth, which in-

    cludes equity capital and reserves andsurpluses.Total Advances to Total Assets (ADV/AST)This is the ratio of the Total Advancesto Total Assets. Total Advances alsoinclude receivables. The value of Total

    Assets excludes the revaluations of allthe assets.G-secs to Total Investments (G-SEC/INV)This ratio shows the risk involved in abanks investments. Since govern-ment securities are risk-free, thehigher the G-secs to investments ra-tio, the lower the risk involved in abanks investments. It is arrived at bydividing the amount invested in gov-

    ernment securities by total invest-ments.Asset QualityNet NPAs to Total Assets (NNPAs/TA)It is a measure of the quality of assetsin a situation where the managementhas not provided for loss on NPAs. Here,the Net NPAs are measured as a per-centage of Total Assets. The lower theratio, the better the quality of advances.Net NPAs to Net Advances (NNPAs/NA)

    Net NPAs are Gross NPAs net of provi-

    sions on NPAs and suspense account. Inthis ratio, Net NPAs are measured as apercentage of Net Advances.Total Investments to Total Assets (TI/TA)This ratio is used as a tool to measurethe percentage of total assets locked upin investments, which, by conventionaldefinition, doesnt form part of the coreincome of a bank. It is arrived at by divid-ing total investments by total assets.Percentage Change in Net NPAsThis measure tracks the movement inNet NPAs over previous year. Thehigher the reduction in Net NPA levels,the better it is for the bank. It is given bythe formula: %Change in Net NPAs =

    (Net NPAs at the end of the year NetNPAs at the beginning of the year)/NetNPAs at the beginning of the year.Management EfficiencyTotal Advances to Total Deposits (TA/TD)This ratio measures the efficiency of the

    management in converting the depositsavailable with the bank (excludingother funds like equity capital, etc.) intoadvances. Total Deposits include de-mand deposits, savings deposits, termdeposits and deposits of other banks.Total Advances also include the receiv-ables.Profit Per Employee (PPE)This measures the efficiency of the em-ployee at the branch level.Business Per employee (BPE)This tool measures the efficiency of allthe employees of a bank in generating

    business for the bank. It is arrived at bydividing the total business by the totalnumber of employees. By business wemean the sum of Total Advances andTotal Deposits in a particular year.Return on Net Worth (RoNW)It is a measure of the profitability of abank. Here, PAT is expressed as a per-centage of Average Net Worth.Earnings QualityOperating Profit by Average WorkingFunds (OP/AWF)This is arrived at by dividing the oper-ating profit of a bank by its averageworking funds. Working funds or thedaily average of the total assets duringthe year.Percentage Growth in Net ProfitIt is the percentage change in net profit

    over the previous year.Net Interest Margin (NIM)It is an important measure of a bankscore income (income from lending opera-tions). It is the difference between theinterest income and interest expended

    as a percentage of average earning as-sets. Interest income includes dividendincome. Interest expended includes in-terest paid on deposits, loans from RBI,and other short-term and long-termloans.Net Profit/Average Assets (PAT/AA)This ratio measures return on assetsemployed or the efficiency in utilizationof the assets. It is arrived at by dividingthe net profit by average assets, whichis the average of total assets in the cur-rent year and previous year.Interest Income/Working Funds (II/WF)

    This ratio measures the income fromlending operations as a percentage of the working funds in a year. Interest in-come includes income on advances, in-terest on deposits with RBI, and divi-dend income.Non-interest Income/Working Funds(NII/WF)This measures the income from opera-tions other than lending as a percentageof working funds. Non-interest incomeis the interest income earned by thebanks excluding income on advancesand deposits with RBI.LiquidityLiquid Assets/Demand Deposits (LA/DD)This ratio measures the liquidityavailable to the depositors of a bank.Liquid Assets include cash in hand,

    balance with RBI, balance with otherbanks (both in India and abroad), andmoney at call and short notice. TotalDeposits include demand deposits,savings deposits, term deposits anddeposits of other financial institu-tions.Liquid Assets to Total Deposits (LA/TD)This ratio measures the liquidityavailable to the depositors of a bank.Liquid Assets include cash in hand,balance with RBI, balance with otherbanks (both in India and abroad), andmoney at call and short notice. Approved Securi-ties are investments made in state-as-sociated bodies like electricity boards,housing boards, corporation bonds andshares of regional rural banks.

    Individual Parameter Ranking(CAMEL)

    Average of Group: Calculated by tak-ing the average of ranks of all indicatorsunder respective parameters.Group Ranks: It is done by sorting theaverage of group in ascending order (thelower the rank average, the better theperformance).Composite Ranking

    Avg of Group Avg: Calculated by tak-ing the average of Group averages.Composite Rank: Ranking is given bysorting the Avg of Group Avg in ascend-ing order.
