The Indian Lean Construction Conference
– ILCC 2019 was conducted at the
National Institute of Construction
Management and Research (NICMAR)
Pune from 14-16 November, 2019. It was
the 3rd
Biennial Conference organized and
hosted by NICMAR and the Institute for
Lean Construction Excellence (ILCE) that
includes ten Directors from leading
construction companies and academic
institute in India.
The theme of the conference was “Bringing
up LEAN CULTURE in Indian
Construction”. The Conference was
inaugurated on the 15th by the Academic
Patron, Dr.Mangesh G Korgaonker,
Director General, NICMAR and the
Industry Patron, Mr.Anup Mathew,
Chairman and Director, ILCE. Conference Chair: Dr.Shobha Ramalingam
Mr.Dean Reed, Director for Lean
Construction, DPR Construction, USA
delivered a keynote on “Enabling Project
Teams and Organizations through Lean
and Virtual Design & Construction”
wherein, he emphasized on the ‘simple
framework’ for project integration and the
need to focus on organizational culture –
the Toyota way.
Mr.Anup Mathew, Sr.Vice President and
Business Head, Godrej and Boyce,
delivered a keynote on “the Lean Journey
at Godrej” since 2011 and their road map
for future Lean implementation works
through an emphasis on organizational
culture.
LEAN CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE – 15.11.2019
Mr.Giridhar Rajagopalan, Executive
Director (Technical), Afcons and Director,
ILCE delivered a keynote on “Developing a
Lean Culture at Afcons” and discussed about
the need for Lean implementation in a VUCA
environment, some of the tools they had
implemented and the anti-patterns and antidotes
evident in their projects.
Mr.Sharath Waikar, CEO and Co-
founder, Lean Station, Singapore
presented on “Change, magic and Lean
Construction” and discussed about the
benefit of adopting Digital-Lean to
improve the performance of projects.
Prof. N.Raghavan, Professor of Practice, IIT
Madras and Director, ILCE shared his insight
on the “Lean culture in Indian project sites”
and methods to improve the implementation
techniques with learning’s from Toyota culture
and system.
The conference on the 15th culminated
with paper presentations. 4 parallel
tracks were held. A total of 48 papers
were presented by authors from both
Industry and Academia.

CULTURAL RENDEZVOUS - 15.11.2019
Day 2 of the conference on the 16th
commenced with technical sessions – paper
presentations. A glimpse:
Prof.Marton Marosszeky, Director,
Marosszeky Associates, Australia
delivered a keynote on “Supply chain
collaboration – a key driver for
innovation” wherein he emphasized on
Lean as an organizational strategy and the
need to create and maintain a vitalized
culture across the supply chain.
Prof. Koshy Varghese, Professor and Dean
(administration), IIT Madras and Director,
ILCE delivered a keynote on “Lean in
Design” and discussed on ‘Lean’ concepts
that were applicable in the Design
Management process through case-studies
and project insights
Mr.Alan Mossman presented on
“Organization and culture in design and
construction” and discussed about
different types of learning and the need to
collaborate and add value for clients and
society apart from the projects.
CONFERENCE - 16.11.2019
Mr.Alok Singh, Plant Head, Tata
Motors delivered a keynote on “Lean
operations for cost optimization” and
threw light on the factors influencing
productivity, logistics and work content.
Dr.Ashwin Mahalingam from IIT
Madras delivered a key note on “what
do we need to do to adopt BIM
successfully on projects?” wherein he
emphasized on adopting ‘Lean’ as a
process methodology and as an enabler.
The conference also included a panel
discussion on “the way forward in the
Lean journey” which was moderated by
Mr. R. Shankarnarayanan, Head,
Project Control, L&T and Director,
ILCE. The discussion was well-debated
by the panelists and the audience.
The valedictory function was graced by
Mr. C. Devarajan, MD, URC
constructions and Director, ILCE. The
event ended with prize distribution for
two best paper and poster awards

In sum, the conference featured 10
keynote addresses by both national and
international experts from various
quarters in the field and around 200
delegates participated in the conference.

days which also featured case studies on
Lean implementation from the Industry.

A one day workshop prior to the
conference was conducted which
comprised of three parallel tracks
offered by national and international
Lean Coach and experts.
Track A: Building and maintaining
an improvement culture was
conducted by Mr.Alan Mossman,
Principal, Change Business Ltd., UK.
Around 40 participants from Industry
and Academia participated in this
workshop
Track B: Automation in Lean was
conducted by Prof.Koshy Varghese and
Prof.Benny Raphael from IIT Madras.
Around 40 participants from Industry
and Academia participated in this
workshop
Track C: Lean-Quality Thinking –
starting from Basics was conducted by
Prof.Marton Marosszeky, Australia and
Prof.N.Raghavan, IIT Madras. Around
50 participants from Industry and
Academia participated in this workshop.
LEAN CONSTRUCTION WORKSHOP – 14.11.2019
VisiLean, Tactive Software and Godrej Construction took the opportunity to
display their products during the 3 day event. The sponsors for the event apart from
ILCE included: Shapoorji Pallonji Pvt. Ltd., VisiLean, URC Construction and
Afcons for workshop.

The technical sessions in the workshop and the conference were well-received by
both the industry participants and academicians. The conference was a stupendous
success with a right mix of technical events and culturals as also informed by
Prof.Marton and others post the conference:
