1.0 INTRODUCTION

An industrial hygiene survey was conducted by Atlantic

Environmental, Inc. at Solvents Recovery Service in Southington

Connecticut, on November 4, 1988. The purpose of the survey was to

determine employee exposure to solvent vapors.

2.0 OBSERVATIONS

Operations at this plant consist of recovering solvents from

waste products such as inks, dyes, and waste paints. The operations

consist of receiving 55 gallon drums of waste material, debunging

the drums, dispersion of waste solvents by resuspending waste paints

into solution using a high speed mixer, and vacuum pumping the waste

materials out of the drums and into storage tanks.

3.0 SAMPLING EQUIPMENT AND METHODS

Personal air monitoring was conducted on employees to determine

their actual 8 hour time weighted average (TWA) exposures to the

various solvent vapors. The solvents in question, and their

respective sampling and analytical methods are as follows:

Personal air monitoring for these compounds was accomplished by

employing battery powered air sampling pumps to draw a known volume

of air through activated charcoal sorbent tubes. These tubes were

then sent to MDS Laboratories (AIHA No. 135) for analysis by gas

chromatography, in accordance with NIOSH P&CAM No. 127

Personal air monitoring for these compounds was conducted by

employing the 3M Organic Vapor Monitor #3500, a passive dosimeter.

These monitors were clipped to the employee's shirt lapel and worn

throughout the entire work shift.

The organic vapor monitors were sent to MDS Laboratories for

analysis, in accordance with NIOSH P&CAM Nos. S-65, S-66, and S-79.

3) Methanol 200 260

Only area monitoring for methanol was conducted. These samples

were taken at 2 separate locations outside adjacent to the

dispersion area. The samples were collected by drawing a known

volume of air through silica gel tubes. These sorbent tubes were

analyzed for methanol by MDS Laboratories in accordance with NIOSH

P&CAM No. S-59.

4.0 RESULTS

All ACGIH-Threshold Limit Values (TLV's) were used to determine

if an individual's exposure to the various solvents were in excess

of recommended limits. In order to determine if the employee's

overall exposure to these chemicals were within the TLV's, we had to

look at each of these chemicals as presenting additive effects.

Page 3

Page 4: INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE SURVEY TO DETERMINE EMPLOYEE … · 2020-07-13 · 1.0 INTRODUCTION An industrial hygiene surve ways conducted by Atlantic Environmental, Inc. at Solvents Recovery

024542 ATLANTIC

ENVIRONMENTAL Solvents Recovery November 4,1988 Southington, Connecticut PROJ. 0650-0597

Therefore, we employed the ACGIH recommended formula for determining

TLV's for mixtures. The general formula, where air is analyzed for

each component, for the TLV of the mixture is:

C2/T2+ C3/T3C1/T1+ + ''' ="n"

C-j = concentration of vapor found in the sample T-L = ACGIH Threshold Limit Value for this chemical

If "n" is found to be greater than 1, then the mixture is

considered to be in excess of the TLV.

We have designated "Eq Exp", or equivalent exposure, for the

TLV mixtures listed in the tables. Any "Total Eq. Exp" listed in

the tables which are less than "1" indicate that the individual was

exposed to solvent concentrations within the recommended TLV mixture

(See Sampling Results).

5.0 CONCLUSION

Each chemical sampled and analyzed for was considered as having

an additive effect on the human body. Therefore, based on the ACGIH

recommended formula for determining TLV's for mixtures, equivilent

exposure values found to be greater than 1 indicate exposure levels

in excess of the TLV.

All samples collected on October 28, 1988 were found to have

total equivilent exposure values less than 1, indicating that the

additive exposure levels were below the TLV. In addition, each

individual chemical which was monitored during this survey was found

to be below their respective TLV's.
