LOST BOY RACER
Wednesday 25 – Friday 27 June, 7.30pm at the Lawrence Batley Theatre
Sean Racer used to be an energetic wildcat youth hooked, on cycling. Now he’s a 40-something tax inspec-tor on the brink of a personal crisis.
Turning to Claude, an oddball ex-pro cycle mechanic, and encouraged by the wily Linda, a serial tax evader keen to distract him from taking a closer look at her books, Sean hatch-es a plan to get his life back on track and on two wheels. He will fulfill a youthful dream; to ride the Tour de France. That’s right, he’s going the distance, albeit on a bike on rollers in his shed. Will he make it to the finish?
LOST BOY RACER is a quirky northern comedy-drama with a touch of blood, sweat and tears, a large dose of fun, some off-the-wall bike action and a love story of sorts.
This world premiere is part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014, the county wide cultural festival in celebration of Le Tour de France Grand Départ.
HTCLP members can get tickets for LOST BOY RACER for just £10, saving you up to £4. Simply call the LBT box office on 01484 430528 and quote ‘HTCPL OFFER’.

officially opened by the ‘Queen of
Aromatherapy’, Eve Taylor OBE
Alexandra House Spa’s new premises
were officially opened by Eve Taylor
OBE in March 2014. The spa, which has
been running for 6 years in rented
accommodation in Edgerton, is now
based in premises bought by spa
owner Maxine Stead in Birkby,
Huddersfield.
The property is a former coach house for a local mill and has also been used as a doctor’s surgery. A programme of renovations, managed by Brunswick Estates (Construction) in Huddersfield,
has been carried out to create the luxu-
rious new spa. Many of the original
features and character of the property
have been retained, whilst creating a
fresh, contemporary and comfortable
relaxation space. The spa opened its
doors at the new premises in January
and was officially opened by Eve Taylor
in March.
Eve Taylor was a pioneer in the field of
aromatherapy and set up her company
in Peterborough 1963 blending pure
essential oils for massage and eventual-
ly developing an aromatherapy skin-
care range. She was awarded an OBE
for her contribution to the industry and
is viewed as ‘the Queen of
Aromatherapy’.
Owner Maxine said “We were very
excited and privileged that Eve Taylor
agreed to officially open our new
premises. Eve is in her 80’s yet still
works full time and is a real
inspiration....As a small independent
business owner, it’s a pleasure to work
with another UK-based independent
company which has such a high
reputation for developing excellent
products and training”.

Members news Retired engineer gets helping hand from DEMAND When newly retired engineer Graham
Jordan lost part of two fingers on his
right hand when extending his
Salendine Nook home, it was more
than inconvenient.
But Graham was insistent on com-
pleting his work on the house, which
caused further complications when
Graham’s right index finger, though not
injured in his accident, grew inwards
and become crooked.
A keen golfer, he’d just taken up his
wife Freda’s favourite sport of bowls
and had become a member of a very
competitive team.
He managed to adapt a golfing glove to
help him grip his golf clubs, but what
was he to do about the bowls? Graham
thought he’d be OK using his left hand,
but bowls needed more skill than he’d
imagined, and his aim wasn’t good
enough.
Seeing how determined and
competitive he was, fellow team
member Andrew Speechley
remembered DEMAND Design
& Manufacture for Disability – and
thought they might be able to help
Graham.
Sure enough they came up with a
bespoke solution for him.
Huddersfield University engineering
student Ben Mubwandarikwa , who is
on a year’s placement with DEMAND at
Brockholes, took on the project in
October.
It wasn’t straightforward though.
Using a neoprene glove as a basis for
the project Ben’s first idea of simply
stitching the glove fingers 1&2 and 3&4
together to support Graham’s fingers
didn’t really work.
Something more substantial was
required, so using rubber kitchen
gloves to make casts of Graham’s hand,
Ben made special silicon inserts, which
replaced the lost finger parts, for the
2nd and 3rd fingers of the neoprene
glove.
As with many prototypes, further
modifications were necessary, and
although the first inserts helped, they
weren’t quite perfect. Ben took further
measurements and adapted the
inserts, to achieve a better fit. Finally
the index and 2nd fingers of the glove
were stitched together to help keep
Graham’s index finger straight.
Graham is very competitive, and
although a relative novice at bowls,
with his new glove assisting him, he
expects to win every game!
